SLACK

Mrs. Priscilla Mealey Slack, 67, of 130 Miller Pointe Drive died Wednesday morning at Forsyth Medical Center following a lengthy illness. She was born in Gardiner, Maine June 6, 1933, to Harold and Anna Whitney Mealey. Mrs. Slack was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She had lived in most of the continental United States while following the baseball career of her husband, William H. "Bill" Slack, former manager of the Winston-Salem baseball team. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Earl Mealey; two sisters, Eleanor Spera and Margurite Stockton; and a daughter, Cynthia Slack Hambright in October 2000. Surviving are her husband, Bill of the home; two sons, Victor Slack and his wife, Diana, of Lewisville and Timothy Slack and his wife, Lynn, of Rural Hall; a daughter, Karen Slack Doub and her husband, Larry, of Winston-Salem; seven grandchildren, Jennifer and Ashley Hambright, Billy and Tori Slack, Whitney Doub and Janet and Jessica Slack; and a sister, Anne Cunningham of Richmond, Maine. The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Vogler and Sons Reynolda Road Chapel. Interment will follow at Crestview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Bill and Priscilla Slack Service Award Fund, c/o Julius Corpening, Wake Forest University, P.O. Box 7227, Winston-Salem, NC 27109-7227.

WHITMAN

Mr. Lawrence Ray Whitman Sr., 74, of 6676 Reynolda Road died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Whitman was born Dec. 19, 1926, to the late Robah J. and Nellie Speas Whitman. He lived all of his life in Forsyth County and was a member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge West Bend No. 434. Mr. Whitman is survived by his loving wife, Myrtle D. Whitman of the home; two sons, Lawrence Ray Whitman Jr. of Tobaccoville and Danny Gray Whitman of Tennessee; two stepsons; a grandchild; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church by the Rev. Dwight Cartner. The body will lie in state for one hour before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church before the service. Memorials may be made to Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church, 4565 Wenlok Lane, Pfafftown, NC 27040.

WOOTEN

A. Jean Reid Wooten, 71, of Winston-Salem died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Wooten was born Jan. 22, 1929, in Forsyth County to Vernon Odell Reid and Treva Spaugh Reid. She was a member of Old Town Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, a sister, Carol Dean Jones, preceded Mrs. Wooten in death. Surviving are her husband, Mr. Howard R. Wooten; two sons, Howard R. Wooten Jr. and wife Kolleen of King and Timothy Wayne Wooten and wife Carolyn of Pfafftown; four grandchildren, Ashley, Nathan, Jenni and Brian; a brother, Vernon Reid Jr. of Kernersville; and a sister, Dorothy June Smith of Advance. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. Ricky Speas and the Rev. Jimmy Hinson officiating. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

BURTON

Mr. Travis S. Burton died Dec. 26, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, in the chapel at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, 2575 Parkway Drive, Winston-Salem.

BYRD

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Mrs. Elizabeth Gabriel Byrd, 80, died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001, at The Meadows in Nashville. Mrs. Byrd was born in Winston-Salem and made her home in Nashville. She graduated from Greensboro College in 1940, taught school in Windsor and worked at the Winston-Salem Journal and Sentinel from 1945 to 1949 where she met her husband, H. Carlton Byrd who was sports editor for many years. She edited publications for Hennis Freight Lines from 1965 to 1975 and Old Salem Inc. from 1977 to 1988. She was a member of the Thursday Bridge Club who met regularly for over 50 years. She was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Winston-Salem. Mrs. Byrd was preceded in death by her husband, H. Carlton Byrd. Survivors include sons Jeff Byrd and wife Claudia of Kingsport, Tenn., and Michael Byrd and wife Deborah of London, England; daughter Jo Jo Davis and husband John of Nashville; brother H.B. Gabriel II of Raleigh; and grandchildren Christian, Elizabeth, Charlotte, Eleanor, Harry and Nina Byrd, Belton Byrd and fiance Jerry Caldwell and Annibel Davis. Memorial services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Winston-Salem, with the Rev. John Shield officiating. Memorials may be made to the Forsyth County Humane Society or St. Paul's Episcopal Church Altar Guild. CREWS

KERNERSVILLE -- Mrs. Alta Althleen Landreth Crews, 82, a loving mother and grandmother, died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, after a short illness at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Mrs. Crews was born and raised on a tobacco farm in Forsyth County, a middle child of the late Johnny and Myrtle Landreth. She was a member of Union Grove Baptist Church. She worked at Kernersville Elementary cafeteria and was a retiree of Adams-Millis. She enjoyed playing the harmonica. She was preceded in death by her husband, O.L. "Tip" Crews; five sisters, Madge, Gertrude, Jatha, Elouise and Nera; and five brothers, Hammock, Paul, Wilbur, Preston and Roger. Surviving are two daughters, Phyllis Pulliam and Deborah Kaye Crews; a son, Terry Crews; six grandchildren, Joseph Eric Winfree, Misty Penrod, Montana Crews, Tammy Crews and Samantha Eddleman. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, at Hayworth-Miller-Cain Chapel by the Rev. Mike Jefferson. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Gardens of Memory. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

DURHAM

Mr. Joseph T. "Joe" Durham, 79, died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, at the home of his daughter with his family and friends. Mr. Durham was born Aug. 26, 1921, in Stokes County to Jim and Margaret Smith Durham. He was a veteran of World War II. Mr. Durham was self-employed and was owner and operator of East Bend Shell for many years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Addie Mae Durham and three brothers, Ledford Durham, Ellis Durham and Graham Durham. Surviving are a daughter, Shirley (Lee) Matthews of Winston-Salem; a son, Jim (Iris) Durham of King; three sisters, Lelia Wilson of Winston-Salem, Nolie Boyles of Pilot Mountain and Lillie Keaton of Westfield; a brother, Moses Durham of Dobson; two grandchildren, Lisa Adams and Zachary Matthews; a special friend, India "Dot" Haynes of Mount Airy. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at Huff Funeral Home by the Rev. Joe Woodward. Burial will follow in East Bend Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Huff Funeral Home in East Bend. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC.

ELLEDGE

Mrs. Nadine S. Elledge, 75, of Winston-Salem died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, at the Brian Center. She was born in Winston-Salem to Floyd and Mayme Sneed Speaks. Mrs. Elledge was an executive secretary with Carolina Importers and a member of Psi Delta Sigma businesswomen's sorority. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Ralph Speaks. Surviving are her husband, James C. Elledge, of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Frankie King, of Tacoma, Wash.; four grandchildren, Howard King of Augusta, Ga., Robert King, Katherine King and James King of Tacoma; and two great-grandchildren, Kenneth Victor King and Nicole Elizabeth King of Augusta. A memorial service will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home Silas Creek Chapel by the Rev. Don Harvey. The family requests that memorials be made to Bethany Baptist Church Building Fund, 600 Old Hollow Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27105.

GWYN

Mrs. Beatrice Fuller Gwyn, 91, of 606 N. Dunleith Ave., Winston-Salem, was born July 28, 1909, in Hartville, Ga. She had been a resident of Winston-Salem for most of her adult life. Mrs. Gwyn went to glory Jan. 8, 2001, at 10:45 p.m. at Baptist Hospital. Surviving are her granddaughters, Jackie Wilson (Lewis), Beatrice Hood Goodwin (late Elie), Constance Hood Styles (Samuel) and Sylvia Coleman (Ben) all of North Carolina; 17 great-grandchildren, Barber Harrison (Jacob), Pauline Hannah, Lisa Hannah, Calvin Hood, Prince Hannah (Kysha), Lewis Wilson Jr., Quincy Lewis (Shawnte), James Wilson, Teresa Hood Woods (Stacy), Elaine Goodwin, Loretta McQueen (Elder Anthony), Edward Goodwin, Trivette Mock (Gerald), Tasha Carter (Michael), Ben Coleman Jr. (Joy) and Antonio Coleman; 31 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of family members and friends. On behalf of the family members we would like to thank you. A funeral service will be held 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at Beasley's Funeral Home. HOLDER

LEWISVILLE -- Mr. Joseph "Jody" Thomas Holder died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001. He was born July 26, 1924, in Forsyth County to Charlie Thomas and Ella Holder. He retired from Sears with 38 years of service. Mr. Holder was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Virginia H. Williams; and a brother, Hobart Holder. He is survived by a sister, Marie Holder Robertson of Advance and six nieces and nephews, Leon Robertson, Pamela Jones, Cecil Robertson, Keith Robertson, Diane Roberts and Danny Williams. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel by the Rev. Thomas Albert. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Friday evening at the funeral home.

HUTCHERSON

KING -- Mrs. Margie Louise Neal Hutcherson, 71, died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, at Silas Creek Manor. She resided at Carolina Christian Village in King until recently. She was born in Stokes County to the late Baxter Fenton and Delia Southern Neal. Mrs. Hutcherson was a homemaker and a member of Isom Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley Haywood Hutcherson, in 1996. Surviving are two sons, Wayne Hutcherson (Pat) of King and Haywood Hutcherson (Brenda) of Walnut Cove; two sisters-in-law, Ruby Brown of Walnut Cove and Lola Richardson of Dobson; three grandchildren, Todd Hutcherson (Donna) of Walnut Cove, Ronald Hutcherson (Michelle) of Chesterfield, S.C. and Amber Hall (Kerry) of King; and four great-grandchildren, Olivia Hall, Alex Hutcherson, Brady Hutcherson and Riley Hall. An 11 a.m. graveside service will be held Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, at Walnut Cove cemetery with the Rev. Ralph Mitchell officiating. JOHNSON

NORTH WILKESBORO -- Mr. Ernest Lee Johnson, 85, of Old Salisbury Road died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, at Wilkes Regional Medical Center. Mr. Johnson was born May 13, 1915, in Wilkes County to John W. and Nora Anderson Johnson. He was a member of Lewis Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, Sunday school superintendent and choir leader. Mr. Johnson was an Army veteran of World War II where he was a sergeant with the transportation corps. He was preceded in death by his wife Mozelle Johnson Johnson and two brothers, Ruben Johnson and Vernie Johnson. Surviving are a son, Kenneth Johnson of Pilot Mountain; a stepdaughter, Shirley Johnson of North Wilkesboro; three brothers, Lawrence Johnson of Winston-Salem, Wayne Johnson and "John" Alvin Johnson of Yadkinville; five sisters, Mae Prevette and Grace Johnson of North Wilkesboro, Oma Marlow of Lewisville and Audrey Jennings of Winston-Salem and Vivian Combs of Boomer; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13 at Lewis Baptist Church with the Rev. Bruce Rhoades, the Rev. Larry Adams and the Rev. Vaughn Brown officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 tonight (Friday) at Miller Funeral Service in North Wilkesboro.

KIGER

RURAL HALL -- Mr. Terry C. Kiger, 62, of Broad Street passed away Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, at his home. He was born Feb. 18, 1938, in Surry County to the late Jessie H. and Susie Tuttle Kiger. He retired from T.W. Garner Food Co. in Winston-Salem. Surviving are his wife of 44 years, Virginia Madeline Kiger of the home; two sons, Terry Randy Kiger and wife Tammy of King and Ricky Todd Kiger of Rural Hall; a daughter, Debra Lynn Kiger of Rural Hall; five granddaughters, Brandy, Ashley, Amanda, Brittany and Lindsay Kiger; and four brothers and sisters, David Kiger of Winston-Salem, Ruby Bennett of King, Dorothy Wall of Troy and Edith Haywood of Mount Gilead. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at Slate Funeral Home Chapel in King with the Rev. Amos Mashburn, Pastor, Ora Evans and Mr. Kiger's niece Kay Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the Mount Olive Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 this evening at the funeral home.

KERNERSVILLE -- Mrs. Mattie Joyce Underhill Lyles, 71, of 440 Lakecrest Drive died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Lyles was born Dec. 27, 1929, in Johnston County, a daughter of the late Carmel and Dora High Underhill. She was a retiree of Gilbarco with 20 years of service. She was a member of Church of God of Prophecy in Winston-Salem. Surviving are her husband of 50 years, Louis Lyles of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Danette Lyles of Belews Creek and Wayne and Brenda Lyles of Walkertown; a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Scott Brooks of Concord; and three grandchildren, Shea Lyles Calloway and husband Steven Calloway, Matthew Brooks and Mark Brooks. A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at Church of God of Prophecy, 5090 S. Main St., Winston-Salem, by the Rev. Lee Glover and the Rev. Bobby Roberson. Burial will follow at Gardens of Memory in Walkertown. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Hayworth-Miller-Cain Funeral Home in Kernersville.
