CLEMMONS -- Mrs. Debra Johnson Martin, 48, of Central Road, won her battle with cancer Jan. 11, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born in Forsyth County Feb. 26, 1952, to Donald Clifton and Janet Sink Johnson. Mrs. Martin was a member of Friedberg Moravian Church and was employed by the Davidson County school system for 20 years. She was an avid gardener and a devoted mother. Mrs. Martin is survived by her husband of 32 years, Charles; two sons, Kenneth L. Martin and wife, Jennifer, of Lexington and Chris A. Martin of Wilmington; two stepgrandchildren, Hunter and Maranda Helms; two sisters, Peggy A. Anderson and husband, Donald, of Clemmons and Lisa D. Blake and husband, Ron, of Clemmons; and her parents, Donald C. and Janet S. Johnson of Clemmons. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at Friedberg Moravian Church Graveyard with the Rev. G. Thomas Shelton officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Friedberg Moravian Church, 2178 Friedberg Church Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27127; Hospice and Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103; or the Brain Tumor Center at Duke University, Durham, NC 27710.

McCANLESS

HICKORY -- Juanita Merritt McCanless, 80, of 89 Wildlife Access Road died Jan. 11, 2001, at McDowell Hospital in Marion. She was born April 16, 1920, in Winston-Salem to William R. and Eliza H. Merritt. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church in King and retired from Western Electric Co. Mrs. McCanless was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, T.R. "Raymond" McCanless. Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Pierce of Indianapolis, Ind. and Mrs. Nina Butner of Kernersville; a brother, Mr. Paul Merritt of Rural Hall; two daughters and a son-in-law, Mrs. Ramona and Alvin Davis and Ms. Paula McCanless of Hickory; three grandsons, Mr. Chris DeHart of Raleigh, Mr. Bill Davis of Hickory and Mr. Tim Davis of Bethlehem; two granddaughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Yount and Mrs. Christine Canipe of Hickory; and 10 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Bethel United Methodist Church in King with the Rev. Joe Smith and the Rev. V.P. Palmer officiating. She will lie in state from 10:30 to 11 a.m. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Bass-Smith Funeral Home. Burial will be in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Foundation, 3 Louisiana Ave., Asheville, NC 28806. Bass-Smith Funeral Home is serving the family.

MORAN

ARCHDALE -- Ray Oliver Moran, 81, a resident of 8348 Harlow Road, died Jan. 10, 2001, at the High Point Regional Hospital. He was a caring man who was always there for others. He was born Feb. 18, 1919, in Stokes County, a son of the late William Vaulter and Mary Elizabeth Stewart Moran. A resident of Archdale since 1952, Mr. Moran was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II, and was retired from the furniture industry. He was of the Primitive Baptist faith and attended local Baptist churches. On April 4, 1946, he married the former Virginia Mae George, who survives, of Country Club Rest Home in Randleman. Also surviving are four children, Donald G. Moran and wife, Sharon, of Randleman, Jo Ann Moran Sluder and husband, Larry, of Plano, Texas, Vickie Moran Wilson of Thomasville and Doris Moran Crayton and husband, Michael, of Archdale; three brothers, Thurman Moran of Spencer, Weldon Moran of Pilot Mountain and Winfred Moran of Mount Airy; a sister, Marie Marshall, of Pinnacle; six grandchildren, Donald Ray Moran, Darlene M. Teeter, Travis D. Comer, Michelle Pugh, April Crayton and Jenny Crayton; and four great-grandchildren, Madison Teeter, Sidney Teeter, Emily Moran and Brandon Pugh. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mae Moran and Dorothy Moran. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale with Elder J.H. Keaton and Elder Rodney Marshall officiating. Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Rock House Primitive Baptist Church cemetery on Highway 268 in Pilot Mountain by the minister of the church. Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and at other times at the home of Donald Moran, 7245 Davis Country Road, Randleman. Memorials may be directed to the American Heart Association, 202 Centreport Drive, Suite 100, Greensboro, NC 27409 or to the American Cancer Society, 4-A Oak Branch Drive, Greensboro, NC 27407.

PATTERSON

Mrs. Dorothy Mae Patterson departed this life Jan. 10, 2001, at the Forsyth Medical Center after an extended illness. She is survived by her husband, Mr. James Sampson Patterson of the home; four daughters, Ms. Willie Mae Patterson Carroll, Mrs. Doris Victoria Davis, Ms. Katherine Renee Patterson and Mrs. Patricia Brown, all of Winston-Salem; two sons, Mr. James Patterson Jr. of California and Mr. Floyd Sampson Patterson of Winston-Salem; a son-in-law, Mr. James Davis of Winston-Salem; a sister-in-law, Omie Mae Patterson of Statesville; seven grandchildren, Miss Jennifer Renee Patterson, Mr. Jamian Renard Smith, Mr. Shawn Patterson, Mr. Chris Patterson, Mr. Travis Lee Carroll, Mr. Benny Gregg and Mr. Gerald Gregg; her father, Robert Price and wife Mary of Belews Creek; a sister, Mrs. Mary Jane Wilkes and husband James of Winston-Salem; three brothers, Mr. Robert Price Jr. and wife Georgia of Madison, Mr. Clifton Price and wife Mildred of Stokesdale and Mr. Clyde Price and wife Christine of Belews Creek; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at the Solid Rock Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles W. Leak officiating. Interment will follow in the Rock Hill Baptist Church cemetery, Belews Creek. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2 p.m. at the church. Immediately following interment a gathering of friends will be held at Solid Rock Missionary Baptist Church. (Hooper)

SLACK

Mrs. Priscilla Mealey Slack, 67, of 130 Miller Pointe Drive died Wednesday morning at Forsyth Medical Center following a lengthy illness. She was born in Gardiner, Maine, on June 6, 1933, to Harold and Anna Whitney Mealey. Mrs. Slack was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She had lived in most of the continental United States while following the baseball career of her husband, William H. "Bill" Slack, former manager of the Winston-Salem baseball team. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Earl Mealey; two sisters, Eleanor Spera and Margurite Stockton; and a daughter, Cynthia Slack Hambright in October 2000. Surviving are her husband, Bill of the home; two sons, Victor Slack and his wife, Diana, of Lewisville and Timothy Slack and his wife, Lynn, of Rural Hall; a daughter, Karen Slack Doub and her husband, Larry, of Winston-Salem; seven grandchildren, Jennifer and Ashley Hambright, Billy and Tori Slack, Whitney Doub and Janet and Jessica Slack; and a sister, Anne Cunningham of Richmond, Maine. The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Vogler and Sons Reynolda Road Chapel with the Rev. Steve Fowler officiating. Interment will follow at Crestview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. STRUPE

RURAL HALL -- Mr. Paul Wayne Strupe Sr., 62, formerly of Church Street, died Jan. 11, 2001, at Meadowbrook Terrace in Advance after a period of declining health. Mr. Strupe was born in Forsyth County Oct. 29, 1938, the son of the late Ernest and Eunice Griffin Strupe. He was a member of Kingswood United Methodist Church. Surviving are a son, Paul W. Strupe Jr., and wife, Cheryl; two granddaughters, Jessica Strupe and Lisa Strupe, of Mooresville; two sisters, Geraldine Brinkley and Joan Shumate; and a brother, Kenneth Dorman Strupe. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at Kingswood United Methodist Church in Rural Hall by the Rev. Glenn S. Griffiths. Interment will follow in Crestview Memorial Park in Rural Hall. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Friday evening at Hayworth-Miller Rural Hall Chapel.

TRENT

LEWISVILLE -- Mr. John James Trent Jr., 74, of Lewisville passed away Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center after several days of declining health. He was born in Forsyth County April 8, 1926, to the late John J. and Bessie Alta Frye Trent. Mr. Trent was a construction worker for many years and a member of Lewisville Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha June Whitman Trent and two sisters, Doris Farrington and Joanne Shumate. Surviving are his sister, Lynne Westmoreland and husband Sonny of Lexington; brother-in-law Bob Shumate of Winston-Salem; and special nieces and nephews, whom he loved as his own, Jason Westmoreland, Wendi W. Curry (Charlie), Angela Hinsdale (Jeff), Amy Shumate, Tim Hauser, Damon and Duane Norman (Angie), Vernon and Tommy Farrington, Kaye Queen and the late Jonathan Hauser. He loved all his great-nieces and nephews, especially Mackenzie, Daniel and Blaine. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Friday evening, Jan. 12, 2001, at Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at Lewisville Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. George Hauser. WOOTEN

A. Jean Reid Wooten, 71, of Winston-Salem died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Wooten was born Jan. 22, 1929, in Forsyth County to Vernon Odell Reid and Treva Spaugh Reid. She was a member of Old Town Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, a sister, Carol Dean Jones, preceded Mrs. Wooten in death. Surviving are her husband, Mr. Howard R. Wooten; two sons, Howard R. Wooten Jr. and wife Kolleen of King and Timothy Wayne Wooten and wife Carolyn of Pfafftown; four grandchildren, Ashley, Nathan, Jenni and Brian; a brother, Vernon Reid Jr. of Kernersville; and a sister, Dorothy June Smith of Advance. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. Ricky Speas and the Rev. Jimmy Hinson officiating. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

CAUDLE

CLEMMONS -- Mrs. Kathleen Holliday Sizemore Caudle, 75, of 8920 Styers Ferry Road died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2000, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born in Marfrance, W.Va., on Sept. 28, 1925, to Edward Dixon and Helen Hamlett Holliday. Mrs. Caudle was a member of Faith Community Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William Caudle; a daughter, Shirley Mae Caudle; a sister, Edna Wooten; and two brothers, Claude "Sonny" Holliday and Ralph Holliday. Surviving are three daughters, Joan (Bobby) Hunter of Clemmons, Linda (Bobby) Webb of East Bend and Sherry (Frank) Ondrejko of Jacksonville, Fla.; two sisters, Mary Lee (Gordon) Beaver of Salisbury and Betty (Bob) St. Cyr of Jacksonville, Fla.; four brothers, Donald Holliday, Bobby Holliday, David Holliday and Joe Dale (May) Holliday, all of Jacksonville, Fla.; three sisters-in-law, Lois Evans of Winston-Salem, Betty Ann Clodfelter of Lewisville and Mildred Thompson of Spencer; a brother-in-law, Roger Caudle of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren, Mike (Debbie) Hunter, Donna (Lynn) Cook and Janet (James) Hutchens; two great-grandchildren, Justin Cook and Cameron Hutchens; and 35 nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Monday, Nov. 13, 2000, at Faith Community Church by the Rev. Larry Walker. The body will be placed in the church at 2:30 to lie in state. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family wishes to express a special thanks to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home for everything they did during Mrs. Caudle's sickness. GOBBLE

MOCKSVILLE -- Mr. Ottis Lee Gobble, 86, of Sheffield Road died early Sunday morning at Forsyth Medical Center after a short illness. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Ijames Baptist Church with the Rev. Tommy Faust and the Rev. Franklin Myers officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will be at Eaton Funeral Home Monday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. They request memorials be considered for the cemetery fund or the playground fund of Ijames Baptist Church, c/o Mr. Joe Gobble, 911 Sheffield Road, Mocksville, NC 27028. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the services on Tuesday. Mr. Gobble was born in Davie County July 21, 1914, to the late Willis Vestal and Flossie Lanier Gobble and was a well-known retired plumber. He was a member of Ijames Baptist Church where he had served on the church trustee board and pulpit committees. Mr. Gobble was also a farmer and enjoyed camping. His wife, Mary Audrey White Gobble, to whom he was married for 54 years, preceded him in death in 1993. Also deceased are a sister, Mrs. J.S. Peoples and three brothers, Ervin Gobble, J.B. Gobble and Felix Gobble. Surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law, Mrs. Johnny (Wanda) McBride of the Farmington community, Mrs. Vic (Patsy) Patti of Mocksville and Mrs. Kenneth (Dottie) Wilkes of Winston-Salem; three sons and daughters-in-law, Donnie and Pat Gobble, Odell and Marsha Gobble and Tommy and Barbara Gobble, all of Mocksville; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Betty Jean Rice of Clemmons and Mrs. Zula Meadows of Greensboro; four brothers, W.M. Gobble and Clarence D. Gobble both of Winston-Salem, Virgil Gobble and Howard Gobble both of Clemmons; and a very special close friend, Dennis Ijames of Mocksville.

HAMBY

Infant Ezekiel Gray Hamby of Winston-Salem died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2000, at his home. He was born Aug. 4, 2000, in Forsyth County to Timothy Hamby and Nicole Frank. Survivors include his parents; grandparents, Janie and Rufus Hamby of Mount Airy, Eddie and Jean Jackson of Rome, N.Y. and Katrenia Brown of Rome, N.Y.; a host of aunts, uncles and cousins; and many friends including those from U.S. Airways. Funeral services will be 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2000, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Burial will be in Westlawn Gardens of Memory. KING -- Nellie Sams Hayden, 88, of Highway 66 died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2000. She was born March 15, 1912, in Stokes County to Sidney Dee and Sarah Martha Overby Sams. She was preceded in death by her husband, Tommy Hayden, in 1993. Surviving are a sister, Ola Bennett of Danbury; several nieces and nephews; and the many children that she attended over the years. Nellie was a member of Quaker Gap Baptist Church where funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2000, at 2 p.m. Dr. Jim Baldwin and the Rev. Mervin Garrison will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 this evening at Slate Funeral Home in King. Memorials may be made to Quaker Gap Baptist Church cemetery Fund, 2265 Flat Shoals Road, King, NC 27021.

HOLDEN

CLEMMONS -- Ms. Penny Jean Holden died Thursday, Nov. 9, 2000. She was born Jan. 20, 1960, in Kansas City, Mo., to Howard Dean and Jean Thompson Holden. She was employed by Hayward Industry Inc. Ms. Holden was preceded in death by her son, David. She is survived by her mother, Jean T. Holden of Newport News, Va.; her father, Howard D. Holden of Columbus, Ind.; and three sisters, Denise Nichols of Vucaipa, Calif., Kathy Holden of Arvada, Colo., and Becci Holden of Terre Haute, Ind. A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2000, at Westlawn Gardens of Memory. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel.

LEDFORD

CLEMMONS -- Miss Era Lee Ledford, 82, of Meadowbrook Terrace died Friday, Nov. 10, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born June 17, 1918, to the late James and Bessie White Ledford. Miss Ledford served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. after 30 years of service. Surviving are a brother, Arthur Ledford and wife Margie of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Friedland Moravian Church Graveyard. Dr. Steve E. Craver will officiate. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.

NAVARRO

Mrs. Kellie Leigh Arnold Navarro, 31, of Winston-Salem died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2000, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was born July 3, 1969, in Forsyth County. Mrs. Navarro was a graduate of Davie High School. Surviving are her husband, Martin Navarro Sosa of the home; three children, Kenneth Clore Jr., Richard J. Neal and Kellie Maria Arnold Navarro; her mother, Beverly Arnold of Clemmons; her father, James W. Arnold and wife Anne of Pfafftown; maternal grandmother Jeanette Surface of Winston-Salem; four sisters, Roxanne Weatherman and husband Arnold of Mocksville, Jennifer Cummings and husband Mark of Pfafftown, Penelope Homer and husband Gator of Cosby, Tenn., and Jamie Tuttle and husband Billy of Lewisville; two nephews; four nieces; and many loving cousins, aunts and uncles. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2000, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. Allen Barker officiating. Interment will follow in Gardens of Memory, Walkertown. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

SNYDER

WELCOME -- Mrs. Nell Essick Snyder, of Highway 52 died Sunday, Nov. 12, 2000, at Lexington Memorial Hospital after a serious illness of two months. She was born Oct. 6, 1924, in Davidson County to Roy H. and Euphrozine R. Essick. Mrs. Snyder was preceded in death by her husband, Robert S. Snyder; a son, Bobby Snyder; and a brother, Dick Essick. Surviving are a sister, Frances Hyatt and a number of nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2000, at First Baptist Church cemetery, Welcome. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice. Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is serving the family.

TILLEY

LEXINGTON -- Mr. Robert "Bobby" Wall Tilley Jr., 53, of Black Sawmill Road died Sunday, Nov. 12, 2000, at 3:16 a.m. at Lexington Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14 at Davidson Funeral Home Hickory Tree Chapel conducted by the Rev. Michael Gates and Dr. James White. Burial will be in Crestview Memorial Park, Rural Hall. Mr. Tilley was born in Forsyth County May 5, 1947, to Robert Franklin Tilley Sr. and Avis Wall Tilley. He was a maintenance supervisor with Warvel Products Inc. and a Baptist. Surviving are his wife, Pamela "Pam" Stewart Tilley of the home; a son, Chad Robert Tilley of the home; a daughter, Jennifer Nicole Tilley of the home; his mother, Avis W. Tilley of Clemmons; and a brother, John "Pete" Tilley of Lexington. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Davidson Funeral Home Hickory Tree Chapel and other times at the home. Memorials may be directed to the charity of the donor's choice.
