TUTTLE

RURAL HALL -- Mrs. Cora Myers Tuttle, 68, of 629 Highway 65 died unexpectedly Saturday, Nov. 11, 2000, at her home. Mrs. Tuttle was born in Forsyth County May 11, 1932, the daughter of Lula Shore Myers and the late Thomas Coy Myers Sr. She was a member of Nazareth Lutheran Church in Rural Hall. Surviving are her husband of 48 years, Carl R. Tuttle of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Robin Tuttle; a very special granddaughter, Lauren Ashley Tuttle, all of King; her mother, Mrs. Lula S. Myers and a sister, Hilda Coalson, both of Springville, Ala.; a brother and sister-in-law, Thomas Coy Myers Jr. and Jane of Tobaccoville; and a number of nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2000, at the Nazareth Lutheran Church cemetery in Rural Hall by the Rev. Michael Weaver and the Rev. Jonathan Rogers. The Tuttle family will receive friends at their home following the service and request that memorials be made to Nazareth Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 519, Rural Hall, NC 27045 or the First Baptist Church of Stanleyville Building Fund, 851 Ziglar Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27105. Hayworth-Miller Rural Hall Chapel is assisting the Tuttle family with arrangements and services.

WATTS

KING -- Lucy Belle Edwards Watts, 93, died Sunday, Nov. 12, 2000. She was born July 20, 1907, in Stokes County to Charlie and Minnie Boyles Edwards. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Elbert Ray Watts; a daughter, Macy Moore; son Roy Watts; sister Stella Edwards; and two brothers, Willie Gus and Wilson Edwards. Surviving are three daughters, Eunice (Fred) Hall, Jean Hunter and Becky (Dan) Nance, all of King; a son, Bill (Frances) Watts of King; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and two sisters-in-law, Edna Edwards of Union Cross and Nonnie Edwards. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2000, at the Mount Olive Baptist Church cemetery with the Rev. Randy Roberts officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 this evening at Slate Funeral Home in King. Memorial may be made to Hospice of Stokes County, P.O. Box 10, Danbury, NC 27016 or to the Resident's Council of Rose Tara Plantation, 141 Plantation Drive, King, NC 27021.

ALEXANDER

Mr. S. Grant Alexander, 20, of Winston-Salem, a beloved son and angel, left for his heavenly home after a long illness on Jan. 12, 2001. Grant was born July 13, 1980, in Forsyth County to Tracy and Reesa Miller Alexander. Survivors include his parents; one sister, Mrs. Amanda Widner and husband Patrick; one nephew, Dameyune Widner; beloved grandparents, Mr. David Alexander and wife Kathleen; and aunts, Mrs. Kathy Shelton and Mrs. Ann Millirons, all of whom reside in Winston-Salem; as well as great aunts and uncles, many cousins, and many friends whom he has touched over the years. A funeral service will be conducted Monday, Jan 15, 2001, at Griffith Baptist Church at 11 a.m. by Rev. Tony Brown with burial to follow at Parklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends following the service at Grifith Baptist Church Fellowship Hall and later at the home of his grandparents David and Kathleen Alexander. The family will also receive friends at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday. All friends and family that he came in contact with over the past 20 years will miss Grant.

BENTON

Mrs. Frances Mollie Benton, 93, of Winston-Salem died Thursday Jan. 11, 2001, at Meadowbrook Manor in Clemmons. She was born July 28, 1907. Mrs. Benton was preceded in death by her mother, Polly Anna Westmoreland Overby, and her husband, Fred Royal Benton, who died in 1950. Surviving are her daughter, Lucille Stewart of Clemmons; two granddaughters, Carolyn Hamby of Winston-Salem and Joan Lincoln of Clemmons; and two great-grandsons, Jason and Jeffrey Lincoln. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Forsyth Memorial Park. The Rev. David Benton will officiate. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.

CUTHRELL

Ms. Edith Virginia Cuthrell, formerly of 113 Acadia Ave., passed away Jan. 12, 2001, at Silas Creek Manor. She was a native of Davidson County and was educated in the local public schools. She is survived by two daughters, Ethel (Gerald) Walser and Yvonne (Charles) Imes; and one son, James E. Cuthrell, all of this city; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, George Cuthrell of Advance and Claude C. (Bernice) Cuthrell of Welcome; one sister, Juanita Brown of Mocksville; one sister-in-law, Beulah Cuthrell of Winston-Salem; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, from Goodwill Baptist Church, where Rev. Philemon Samuels will officiate with interment to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends 1:30 to 2 p.m. at the church prior to the services. The remains may be viewed at Clark S. Brown & Sons Funeral Home Chapel, 717 Patterson Ave., 2:30 to 7 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to 12 noon Monday, at which time the remains will be taken to the church to lie in state. The family may be contacted at the home of her daughter, Ethel Walser, 3531 Friedberg Church Road. Arrangement entrusted to Douthit Funeral Services (896-0061).

DELLENBACK

MOUNT AIRY -- Mrs. Thelma "Rosa" Dennis Dellenback, 79, died Friday, Jan. 12, 2001.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, at Howell Funeral Home of Mount Airy, N.C.

DUNNING

Mrs. Gail Dewar Dunning, 44, of 3940-E Valley Court, went to be with her Lord on Jan. 13, 2001. The tremendous courage and grace that she displayed during a lengthy battle with cancer was an inspiration to all who knew her. Gail was born in Winston-Salem on May 7, 1956, to the late Carl Abernathy Dewar Jr. and Thelma Whitehurst Dewar. A Reynolds High School graduate, she later received an undergraduate degree in art and art history from UNC-Chapel Hill. She worked as a designer at Sosnik's Furniture, managed Hampton House Gallery, worked in design at Salem Graphics and Jewell Interior, and owned her own business, Inhouse Designs, for the past seven years. Countless customers have commented that she not only brought joy to their lives by beautifying their surroundings but also by so freely sharing her warmth and friendship. Gail was for many years a faithful member of Centenary United Methodist Church where she sang with a group of people she dearly loved the Chancel Choir. Her loving husband and family, her close friends, her yellow lab, Tess, her beautiful garden, and her strong faith brought joy and fulfillment to her life. She is survived by her husband, Robert G. Dunning, of the home; two stepsons, Scott Dunning, of Winston-Salem, and Shawn Dunning and wife, Melanie, of Raleigh; two brothers, Wayne Dewar and wife, Karan, of Waxhaw, and Gary Dewar of Broadway, N.C.; one sister, Joan Dewar, of Fuquay Varina; two nieces, Kimberly Coppage and Danyele Smith; and two nephews, Jeffrey Ray and Darrell Dewar. Interment will be at the Columbarium at Centenary United Methodist Church. A memorial service will be held at Centenary at 12 noon Monday, Jan. 15, and the family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Centenary Fund at Centenary United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 658, Winston-Salem, NC 27102-0658.

EARGLE

Mr. David Michael Eargle, 51, of Winston-Salem, passed away Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born May 20, 1949, in Lancaster, S.C., to Stella Brantley and Floyd C. Eargle. Mr. Eargle was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Winston-Salem. He was preceded in death by his father. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Sylvia Moose Eargle of the home; two daughters, Tiffany Ann and Deborah Michelle Eargle of the home; his mother, Mrs. Stella Brantley Eargle; one stepson, Chris Brown (wife Evita); two brothers, Terry P. (wife Judith) and Steve M. Eargle (wife Julie). A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan 15, 2001, at Calvary Baptist Church with Dr. Guy Hipp officiating. The family will receive friends after the service at the church. Memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 5000 Country Club Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27104, to the American Cancer Society, 4-A Oak Branch Drive, Greensboro, NC 27405, or to the American Heart Association, P.O Box 25086 Winston-Salem, NC 27114. Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

HEPLER

THOMASVILLE -- Mrs. Gladys Irene Hooker Hepler, 78, a resident of Sunbridge Rehabilitation and Care, formerly of Denton Road, died Jan. 13, 2001, in Lexington Memorial Hospital after two years of declining health. She was born Jan. 9, 1923, in Stokes County, a daughter of Numa Fletcher Hooker and Mary Luttie Huff Hooker. She was a graduate of Ashmore Business College and Mary Elizabeth Hospital Nursing School. She performed post-graduate study in operating room technology at Duke Medical Center. She worked at Duke Medical Center in the operating room for three years. She was a retired nurse of the Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, retiring in 1979 for medical reasons after 11 years. On April 12, 1941, she was married to Stokes E. Hepler but was later divorced. She was preceded in death by her father, Numa Hooker, and her sister, Mrs. Marjorie Dow Hooker Sink. Surviving are her mother, Mrs. Mary Luttie Huff Hooker, of Thomasville; two sons, Stokes E. (Sunny) Hepler Jr. and wife, Lu, and Randy H. Hepler and wife, Anne, both of Thomasville; two grandchildren, Bart Hepler and Mrs. Kevin (Christy) Thomas; and a great-grandson, Austin Thomas. Graveside services will be conducted Monday at 11 a.m. at Holly Hill Memorial Park cemetery by the Rev. David Best. The body will remain at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home until the hour of service. The family will be at the funeral home from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday and other times at the home of a son, Sunny Hepler, 315 Liberty Church Road, Thomasville. Memorials may be directed to the Boys Home of Lake Waccamaw, P.O. Box 127, Lake Waccamaw, NC 28450 or to the Seniors Ministry of First Baptist Church in Thomasville, 9 Cramer St., Thomasville, NC 27360.

JOHNSON

MOUNT AIRY -- Mrs. Estelle Gunnell Johnson, 89, of 542 Allred Mill Road, Mount Airy, widow of Harvey Andrew Johnson, passed away on Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, at Surry Community Nursing Center. Mrs. Johnson was born in Surry County on April 22, 1911, the daughter of the late Jim Gunnell and Lizzie Smith Gunnell. She was a member of Indian Grove Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years and was a member of the church choir. Mrs. Johnson loved all the gospel groups everywhere and attended gospel singings as long as she was able. She retired from the Northern Hospital of Surry County where she worked on the second floor for 20 years. Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Bobby (Bob) and Barbara Johnson of Mount Airy; eight grandchildren and their spouses, Kenny and Janice Johnson, Ricky Johnson, Wanda and Mike Lipp, Kristy and Brian Allison, Kimberly Snyder, Larry and Pat Harriman, Deborah Harriman and Garry and Sherri Harriman; nine great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Elsie Adams, Tootsie Loftis, Cleo Johnson and Era Barnes. Special friends were Miss Ada Haymore and Mrs. Josephine Haymore. Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her husband and parents, and by her two sisters, Mary Lou Timmons and Reva Joy White. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Sunday Jan. 14, 2001, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel with services conducted by the Rev. Tommy Floyd, with burial following in Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends at Moody Funeral Home on Sunday from 1:30 p.m. until the service starts. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Indian Grove Baptist Church Building Fund c/o Mrs. Marlene Johnson, 155 Tom's Creek Rd., Pilot Mountain, NC 27041.

KNIGHT

Mrs. Viola Alley Knight, 105, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mrs. Knight was born in Stokes County on July 5, 1895, to Pasley and Loura Amos Alley. She lived in Forsyth County most of her life and was a member of Fairview Moravian Church. Mrs. Knight was preceded in death by her husband, Eddie Huston Knight; two sons, Eddie H. Knight Jr. and Eugene A. Knight; one brother, Roy Alley; and one sister, Zell Shelton. She is survived by one granddaughter, Debbie K. Swaim, and husband Keith; one grandson, David R. Knight; one nephew and three nieces. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Chapel with Rev. Neil Routh officiating. Burial will follow in Salem cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County, 1100-C S. Stratford Rd., Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

MARSHALL

Mr. William Moore Marshall, 67, known by his many friends as "Bill," died Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, at the Forsyth Medical Center. He retired from Forsyth County as a maintenance supervisor after 30 years of faithful service. Bill retired as a volunteer with the Rural Hall Fire Dept. after 36 years of service during which he served in capacities ranging from traffic control officer to chief. He was the coordinator of the square dance group Centennial Squares for the past ten years, entertaining at rest homes and retirement homes and performing from Dollywood to Myrtle Beach. He has been calling square dances for many organizations for more than 50 years. Bill took pride in his dancing and calling abilities. Bill was a kind an gentle man and a friend to thousands of people. He was a member of Poplar Springs Church of Christ in King. Surviving is his loving and faithful wife of 43 years, Martha (Marty) Nance Marshall of the home; a loving son and daughter-in-law, Tobi and Laura Marshall of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren, Will, Emma and Alexandra Marshall of Winston-Salem; his father and mother, Vance and Juanita Marshall of Rural Hall; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Henry and Mae Marshall of Raleigh, and Karl and Barbara Marshall of Paris, Ill.; special in-laws, Grady and Judy Cole of Rural Hall, Marvin and Faye Watts of Winston-Salem, Roy and Norma Colter of Rural Hall; L.G. and June Nance of Tobaccoville; special friends Joe and Rebecca Tuttle of Belews Creek, Amanda, John, Katie and Betsy Webster of Walkertown, also Matt and MacKenzie Tuttle of Belews Creek; and many special nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted today (Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001) at 2:30 p.m. at Poplar Springs Church of Christ, officiated by Ralph Sproles, minister. Bill will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends and relatives following the service in the church. A private burial will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Poplar Springs Church Building Fund, Hwy. 66 N., King, NC 27021 or the American Cancer Society, 1900 S. Hawthorne Road, Forsyth Medical Park Suite 622, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

MILLS

Mr. John L. Mills, the father of Mrs. Janet L. (Dr. Beverly) Jones of Winston-Salem, died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001, at Claire Bridge of Winston-Salem. A memorial service for Mr. Mills will be conducted Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, in the Chapel of Centenary United Methodist Church. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Carolina Piedmont North Carolina Chapter, 3420 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC 28215-3298.

PARDUE

LEXINGTON -- Ms. Irene Pardue of Lexington, N.C., formerly of Knoxville, Tenn., passed away on Jan. 13, 2001, after a lengthy illness. Ms. Pardue was born Nov. 17, 1904, to the late Nell Duggan Pardue and the late T.W. Pardue. Her stepmother was the late Maggie M. Pardue. A half-sister, Bordie Belle Pardue Hartman, of Lexington and a half-brother, T.D. Pardue, of Fort Myers, Fla., survive her. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and -nephews. Margaret Ezell of Knoxville, Tenn., a special cousin, also survives her. Special thanks go to loving caregivers Pam Hartman and Jane Ellis. A private graveside service will be held at Mount Carmel Methodist Church on Ebert Street, Winston-Salem, Monday, Jan. 15, 2001. Arrangements are with Davidson Funeral Home, Hickory Tree Road, Winston-Salem; however, the family will not be holding visitation.

PENDLETON

STUART, VA. -- Mr. Herman E. Pendleton, 83, of Stuart, Va., died Friday evening at Lewis Gale Memorial Hospital in Roanoke, Va. He is the brother of Mrs. Raymer (Queenie) Dilworth of Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 15, at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart. The family will receive friends two hours prior.

POWELL

NORTH WILKESBORO -- Mr. Cletus Franklin "Dobe" Powell, 83, of Boone Trail died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001, at his home. Mr. Powell was born in Lincoln County June 2, 1917, to Rufus Jurant and Maude Viska Corbett Powell. Funeral services will be held 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 14, at Reins-Sturdivant Chapel with Dr. Paul Brunner officiating. Burial was in Mountlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in North Wilkesboro 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. prior to the service. Memorials may be made to the Wilkes County Animal Shelter, 408 Call St., Wilkesboro, NC 28697.
