PURVIS

Mrs. Silva Morton Purvis, 89, of Winston-Salem died Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, at Forsyth Memorial Hospital. She was born Sept. 5, 1911, to Walter Cleveland and Sarah Gaither Morton in Iredell County. She retired from AT&T in 1977. She was an active member of Salem Baptist Church and the Grace Steven Sunday School Class. She was preceded in death by her husband, Newman C. Purvis. Survivors include one daughter, Nancy P. Simmons; one son, Paul Purvis and wife Carol; four grandsons, Robert Alspaugh, Randall Simmons and Mark and Eric Purvis; one sister, Sarah Steel of Norfolk, Va.; and five great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, at Forsyth Memorial Park with the Rev. Floyd Boles officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Salem Baptist Church, 429 S. Broad St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101.

RICHARDSON

WALNUT COVE -- Mr. Edd Wilson Richardson Sr., 76, died Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, at Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center. He was born in Stokes County to the late Daniel G. Richardson Sr. and Hattie Mickey Richardson. He coached Little League baseball and Scout Troop #444 basketball teams for many years and was a U.S. Army veteran that served in the European Theater during World War II. He was retired from Hennis/Spector Freight Lines. Mr. Richardson was a member of the Walnut Cove Masonic Lodge #629, a member of First Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, and was a former Sunday school teacher. He was preceded in death by a son, Danny Ross Richardson, four sisters and two brothers. Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Mary Ross Richardson, of the home; two sons, Edd W. Richardson Jr. (Marsha) and Wayne R. Richardson (Sharon), all of Walnut Cove; a daughter-in-law, Theresa D. Richardson, of Walnut Cove; three sisters, Bertha Redmon of Oak Ridge, and Fannie Knight and Lola Brown (Harold), all of Walnut Cove; a brother, Elwood Richardson, of Walnut Cove; eight grandchildren, Stephanie Page (Jason), Ashley, Kelly, Lori, Amber, Scott, Amy and Anna Richardson; a great-granddaughter, Abigail M. Page, and numerous nieces and nephews. A 4 p.m funeral service will be held Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at First Baptist Church. Burial will follow with full Masonic rites in the church cemetery. SNYDER

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Mr. William L. Snyder Jr., 75, of Briarcliffe West died Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center. He was born Sept. 28, 1925, in Winston-Salem, a son of the late William L. and Nina Ogburn Snyder. He was the retired manager of Dunes Village and Pan American Hotel. Mr. Synder was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by a brother, Donald O. Snyder, who died Dec. 17, 2000. Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Gilliam Snyder of Myrtle Beach. Funeral will be 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at McMillian-Small Funeral Home with the Rev. Quay Adams officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:30 to 4 p.m. at the funeral home. Entombment will be 2:30 Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, at Forsyth Memorial Park in Winston-Salem with the Rev. Samuel Carter officiating. The family will receive friends at Voglers Funeral Home, Reynolda Road Chapel, from 1 to 2 p.m. Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association, 1941 Savage Road, Suite 200-A, Charleston, SC 29407.

WILSON

Ada Clinard Wilson, 90, formerly of Friendship Ledford Road, died Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was the widow of Raymond Mickey Wilson, to whom she had been married for 60 years. She was born Oct. 16, 1910, in Wallburg to Alpheus Wesley and Phoebe Jane Catherine Motsinger Clinard. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Martha Wilson and David F. Rowe Sr. of Clemmons, and a son and daughter-in-law, Ray E. and Janice Ray Wilson, of Lewisville. Others survivors include grandchildren David F. Rowe Jr. and Charles J. Rowe, both of Advance, Mickey W. Rowe of Elk Creek, Va., Catherine Wilson of Carrboro, Michael W. Wilson of Lakewood, Colo., and Rachel Wilson of Lewisville; five great-grandchildren; and sisters-in-law Rachel (Mrs. Noah) Clinard, Alpha (Mrs. Frank Z.) Wilson and Lucille W. (Mrs. Ray) Craver, all of Winston-Salem. Preceding her in death were brothers Fletcher E. Clinard and Noah D. Clinard and sisters Florence C. Fowler and Ida Belle Clinard. She was valedictorian of her high school, Liberty Piedmont Institute, of Wallburg. She completed her undergraduate work at Salem and Guilford Colleges and received a master's degree in education from UNC Greensboro. For eight years she worked with the U.S. Civil Service Regional Office in Winston-Salem. After 23 years of teaching 3rd grade, she retired from the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County schools. She was a member of Sunset Hills Extension Homemakers Club, Sunshine Senior Citizens Club, Wally Byam Caravan Club International and various organizations within her profession and her church, New Friendship Baptist, and formerly Southside Baptist Church. She was a gentle and loving wife, mother and grandmother; a faithful Christian; a dedicated teacher; a gracious hostess; a lover of poetry and classical music; and a student of various arts and crafts. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 14, in the fellowship hall of New Friendship Baptist Church, 4258 Old Lexington Road. A graveside service in the church graveyard will follow at 3 p.m. with Rev. Chris Bryne officiating. Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is handling arrangements.

CARTNER

GREENSBORO -- Mr. Silas Vernon Cartner of Greensboro died Jan. 13, 2001. A graveside service accompanied by Masonic Rites will be held 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16, at Forest Lawn cemetery. Mr. Cartner was born Jan. 28, 1926, in Forsyth County to the late Silas and Roby Cartner. Mr. Cartner, a World War II veteran, was a graduate of Lenoir Rhyne College. He retired from McLean Trucking Company in 1981. He is survived by wife Joan, son Stuart Cartner of Dallas, Texas, daughter Lisa Hipp of Greensboro, grandson Jordan Hipp of Greensboro and sister Frances Cartner of Winston-Salem. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. before the service at Forbis and Dick Funeral Home, 1118 North Elm St., Greensboro. Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Association, 919 N. Michigan Ave., Suite 1100, Chicago, IL 60611-1676, designated to research.

CHAMELIN

KERNERSVILLE -- Mrs. Esther Smith Chamelin, 97, of Kernersville, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at the Britthaven of Forsyth. Mrs. Chamelin was born March 6, 1903, a daughter of the late Eugene and Electia Cline Smith, and was a lifelong resident of the Union Cross Community. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Ray Chamelin, in 1984. Surviving are six sons and their wives, Johnny R. and Bobbie Lou Chamelin, Charles E. and Joyce Chamelin, Coy S. and Brenda Chamelin, Billy L. and Linda Chamelin, and Jerald and Paulette Chamelin, all of Kernersville, and Bobby B. and Emi Chamelin, of Glendale, Calif.; a sister, Miss Earlene Smith, and a brother, Roger Smith, both of Kernersville; and 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Hayworth-Miller Cain Funeral Home Chapel by Elder J.A. Langham, with burial to follow in the Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

CROWE

MOREHEAD CITY -- Wynelle Hurst "Nell" Crowe, 84, of Morehead City, died Friday at Carteret General Hospital. Funeral Services were 2 p.m Sunday at Parkview Baptist Church, Morehead City, with the pastor Rev. Freddie Angle officiating. Burial followed in Bay View cemetery. Survivors are one daughter, Marie C. Vaughn, of Winston-Salem; two sons, Dr. John H. Crowe of Davis, Calif., and Dr. Donald H. Crowe of Orinda, Calif.; one sister, Willard H. Mercer, of Wilmington; 12 grandchildren, Robert L. Vaughn, Jeffrey R. Vaughn, Michael W. Vaughn, Amy V. Green, Clyde Davis, Beth Davis, Laura Ownby, Jeanelle Crowe, Vickie Crowe, Jennifer Crowe, Phillip Crowe Jr. and Ann Marie Crowe; and one great-granddaughter, Addison Vaughn. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd O. Crowe; sons Lloyd O. Crowe Jr., James L. Crowe, Ronald H. Crowe and Phillip H. Crowe; and daughter Virginia C. Pederson. DUNNING

Mrs. Gail Dewar Dunning, 44, of 3940-E Valley Court, went to be with her Lord on Jan. 13, 2001. The tremendous courage and grace that she displayed during a lengthy battle with cancer was an inspiration to all who knew her. Gail was born in Winston-Salem on May 7, 1956, to the late Carl Abernathy Dewar Jr. and Thelma Whitehurst Dewar. A Reynolds High School graduate, she later received an undergraduate degree in art and art history from UNC-Chapel Hill. She worked as a designer at Sosnik's Furniture, managed Hampton House Gallery, worked in design at Salem Graphics and Jewell Interior, and owned her own business, Inhouse Designs, for the past seven years. Countless customers have commented that she not only brought joy to their lives by beautifying their surroundings but also by so freely sharing her warmth and friendship. Gail was for many years a faithful member of Centenary United Methodist Church where she sang with a group of people she dearly loved the Chancel Choir. Her loving husband and family, her close friends, her yellow lab, Tess, her beautiful garden, and her strong faith brought joy and fulfillment to her life. She is survived by her husband, Robert G. Dunning, of the home; two stepsons, Scott Dunning, of Winston-Salem, and Shawn Dunning and wife, Melanie, of Raleigh; two brothers, Wayne Dewar and wife, Karan, of Waxhaw, and Gary Dewar of Broadway, N.C.; one sister, Joan Dewar, of Fuquay Varina; three nieces, Kimberly Coppage, Danyele Smith and Lyrnn Carter; and two nephews, Jeffrey Ray and Darrell Dewar. Interment will be at the Columbarium at Centenary United Methodist Church. A memorial service will be held at Centenary at 12 noon Monday, Jan. 15, and the family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Centenary Fund at Centenary United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 658, Winston-Salem, NC 27102-0658.

EADS

BOONVILLE -- Mrs. Nina Vestal Eads, 83, of Boonville died Sunday Jan. 14, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Eads was born July 19, 1917, in California to Tandy and Mamie Kitrell Vestal. She was a lifelong member of the Elkin VFW Post Ladie Auxiliary and a member of Charity Baptist Church, Boonville. Mrs. Eads was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Vester Eads. Surviving are a daughter, Brenda E. (Jim) Russell of Boonville; two sons, R.L. (Wilma) Eads of Yadkinville and Gary (Darlene) Eads of Boonville; four grandchildren, Angie (Mark) Adams, Tosha Eads, April (Clint) Wall and Hunter Eads; five great-grandchildren, Chad and Kayla Adams, Sarah and Francis Sheets and Brendon Eads; seven sisters and two brothers. Funeral Services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16, at Gentry Family Chapel, Yadkinville, by Rev. Jerry Gibbons. Burial will follow in the Boonville cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Jan. 15, at Gentry Family Funeral Service, Hwy. 601 N., Yadkinville, N.C. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the Boonville cemetery Fund c/o Jim Speer.

EVERIDGE

Miss Mary Elizabeth Everidge, 87, of Winston-Salem, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at her residence. She was born April 24, 1913, in Forsyth County to Garney Leon and Mae Brinkley Everidge. Miss Everidge was a member of Fraternity Church of the Brethren and was retired from Hanes Knitting. Survivors are three sisters, Ethel Hudspeth, Virginia Crump and Barbara Bryan; one brother, Jim Everidge, all of Winston-Salem; and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Fraternity Church of the Brethren with Rev. Thomas Hanks officiating. HOOTS

EAST BEND -- Miss Maggie Etta Hoots of Route 2 passed away Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at Yadkin Nursing Center in Yadkinville. She was born in Yadkin County to Henry and Nettie Cranfill Hoots. She was a member of Enon Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers and sisters, Bessemane Williams, Daniel Elsey Hoots, Ollie Steelman, Everet Henry Hoots, Andrew Guy Hoots, Zeno Daniel Hoots, Coleman A. Hoots, R.S. "Rant" Hoots and Sidney Hoots. Surviving are several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, at the Enon Baptist Church cemetery by Rev. Bill James. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Enon Baptist Church cemetery Fund, c/o Steve Clodfelter, 6321 Old Hwy. 421, East Bend, NC 27018. HUTCHISON

Mr. William Webster Hutchison, 75, of 73 Robinhood Circle, Winston-Salem, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Hutchison was born Oct. 23, 1925, in High Point to Joe Robert and Nannie Young Hutchison. There will be a graveside service conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16, at Guilford Memorial Park cemetery in Greensboro. Mr. Hutchison lived most of his life in Greensboro and Winston-Salem. He was a member of Mount Tabor United Methodist Church. He was retired from Lucent Technologies after many years of service. Mr. Hutchison was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and Forsyth Amateur Radio Club. The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the staff of Piedmont Hematology-Oncology Association and to Forsyth Medical Center, Ninth Floor. Survivors include his wife, Barbara H. Hutchison of the Home; one brother, Thomas E. Hutchison and wife Shirley of Lewisburg; two sisters, Irene Swinson and Joe Anne Rossin of Greensboro; several nieces and nephews; and a sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Jack Allen of Greensboro; and Louise C. Holden of Knoxville, Tenn. KNIGHT

Mrs. Viola Alley Knight, 105, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mrs. Knight was born in Stokes County on July 5, 1895, to Pasley and Loura Amos Alley. She lived in Forsyth County most of her life and was a member of Fairview Moravian Church. Mrs. Knight was preceded in death by her husband, Eddie Huston Knight; two sons, Eddie H. Knight Jr. and Eugene A. Knight; one brother, Roy Alley; and one sister, Zell Shelton. She is survived by one granddaughter, Debbie K. Swaim, and husband Keith; one grandson, David R. Knight; one nephew and three nieces. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Chapel with Rev. Neil Routh officiating. Burial will follow in Salem cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County, 1100-C S. Stratford Rd., Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

MESSICK

Juanita Carlyse Conrad Messick, a Winston-Salem resident, wife of the late Ray Fearrington Messick and daughter of the late Nora and Edwin Conrad, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Oct. 26, 1915, in Forsyth County and graduated from R.J. Reynolds High School. She was a lifelong member of Calvary Moravian Church and had always adored gathering her large family together for the Christmas Love Feast as one of her wonderful family traditions. Her family was the light of her life and she was especially thrilled with the birth of each new baby. Survivors are one daughter, Sylvia Messick Gilley and husband James R.; four sons, Dale Carlyse Messick and wife Diane, Ralph Edwin Messick and wife Patricia, Larry Eugene Messick and Norma Messick, and William Penry Messick and wife Debby; grandchildren Michael Gilley and wife Donna, Elizabeth Gilley, Nita Gilley Dry and husband Todd Dry, Kevin Messick and wife Laura, Thomas Messick and wife Tina, Mark Messick, Amy Messick Paynter and husband Robert, Aaron Messick and Brent Messick, Alisa, Andrea and Andrew Messick, and Torrey and Ryan Rieser. Nita was also very proud of her adorable great-grandchildren Caroline Gilley, Gray and Mckenzie Gilley, Brandon and Chandler Dry, Holly and Jack Messick, Spencer and Grayson Messick, and Hannah and Robert Paynter. She is also survived by one devoted sister, Evelyn Conrad; and three brothers, Tom and a very devoted sister-in-law Pennie Conrad, James Conrad and wife Jackie, and Richard Conrad and wife Frankie. She was preceded in death by brothers Forrest Conrad and wife Nell, and Leo Conrad. Also deceased are sisters Hazel McLeod and husband Mac, Pauline West and husband Nat, Edrie McGhee and husband O.T. (Cub). Memorials may be made to Calvary Moravian Church, 600 Holly Ave., Winston-Salem, NC 27101, or to Trinity Center, Inc., 640 Holly Ave., Winston-Salem, NC 27101. The family will receive friends at Vogler's, Main Street from 7-9 p.m. Monday, Jan. 15. Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16, at Calvary Moravian Church with burial to follow at Salem cemetery.

MILLS

Mr. John L. Mills, the father of Mrs. Janet L. (Dr. Beverly) Jones of Winston-Salem, died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001, at Claire Bridge of Winston-Salem. A memorial service for Mr. Mills will be conducted 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, in the Chapel of Centenary United Methodist Church.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Carolina Piedmont North Carolina Chapter, 3420 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC 28215-3298.
