MOORE

PINNACLE -- Mrs. Mary Lou Moore, 70, of 538 Culler Road, Pinnacle, passed away Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem. She was born Aug. 5, 1930, in Surry County to Roscoe Lebert and Martha Jet Culler Edwards. Mrs. Moore was retired from ARA Foods Services and RJR Tobaccoville Plant and a member of Mount Zion United Methodist Church. Survivors are her husband, Earnest George Moore Jr. of the home; one son, Ronald Eugene Moore of the home; two sisters, Mrs. Ruby Whicker of Pinnacle and Mrs. Addie Lane of Kernersville; one brother, Colonel Edwards ofMissouri; one sister-in-law, Evy Edwards of Greensboro; special nieces and nephews, Malinda Fishel and family, Peggy Cagel and family, Jimmy Whicker and family and Teresa Andrews and family; numerous other nieces and nephews; one very special cousin, Verline and Nicholas Rosales; and special friends, Mary Frances Joyce, Grady and Virginia Love and Hazel Sechrist. Mrs. Moore was preceded in death by one brother, Oliver Edwards, and one sister, Adria Harpe. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, at Mount Zion United Methodist Church, conducted by Rev. Kristen Bargeron and Rev. Fankie Lane. Mrs. Moore will lie in state at the church 30 minutes prior to the funeral services. Interment will follow in the Mount Zion United Methodist Church cemetery. The Moore family will receive friends at Cox-Needham Funeral Home 7-9 p.m. Monday, Jan. 15. Memorials may be made to Shoals Summer Camp, c/o Donnie Felts, 3411 Quaker Church Rd., Pinnacle, NC 27043, or to Pinnacle Garden Club, c/o Mae Rene Heffner, Pinnacle, NC 27043. MYERS

ADVANCE -- Mr. Tildren Ray Myers, 81, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at The Oaks at Forsyth after having been in declining health for at least seven years. He previously was a resident at Clare Bridge Assisted Living Residence from November 1997 until October 2000 when he became a resident at The Oaks. He was born in Advance to the late George Valentine and Lou Burton Myers on Oct. 22, 1919, the youngest of eight brothers and three sisters. He was educated at the Shady Grove School in Advance. As a young man, he was a member of Elbaville Methodist Church and sang in a quartet. He honorably served in the United States Army from July 29, 1940, until July 27, 1949, with Company B, 1st Battalion, 350th Infantry Regiment. He rose to the rank of sergeant and while in the Army participated in the sport of boxing. While serving with the 2nd Armored Division in the early 1940s, he was under the command of the legendary Major General George Smith Patton Jr. He served overseas Oct. 16, 1942, until June 8, 1945, as a veteran of the following campaigns: Algeria-French Morocco, Sicily, Normandy, Northern France and the Rhineland, all with the 2nd Armored Division. He was with the 2nd Armored Division when it made its famous night move of over 70 miles on ice and snow-covered roads to get in front of the Germans' corresponding unit, the 2nd Panzer Division, and stopped the Germans' deepest penetration in the famous Battle of the Bulge on Christmas Day, 1944. The 2nd Panzer Division was destroyed by the 2nd Armored Division that day and never fought again in World War II. This saved the port of Antwerp from being captured by the Germans. Following the war, he served in the American Army of Occupation in Italy. His decorations include the Distinguished Unit Badge, the American Defense Service Medal, two Good Conduct Medals, the EAMET Campaign Medal with five Bronze Service Stars, the World War II Victory Medal, the American Campaign Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal. He was employed with R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. 1945-46 and 1949 until his retirement in 1981. He married Mattie Lois Laird Myers on Sept. 17, 1950, at Bethlehem Methodist Church in Advance. She preceded him in death on Jan. 6, 1994. They had three children who, along with their spouses, survive him: the Rev. (Judge) Jimmy Laird Myers of Advance, Thomas Ray Myers and wife Diane of Charlottesville, Va., and Marla Myers Foster and husband Shane of Advance. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Troy Wayne Taylor, a student at Pembroke University; Shanna Leigh Taylor of Advance; and Katherine Suzanne Myers and Carolyn Jean Myers of Charlottesville, Va.; and by 12 nephews and 8 nieces. His hobbies included hunting and gardening. He was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church, and he was a life member of the Advance Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8719 and the 2nd Armored Division Association. He was a good man whose children never saw him mistreat or heard him say a cruel word to their mother, and he was constantly by her side during her battle with cancer. He loved the Lord Jesus Christ, spending his last days praising the Lord in song while lying in a nursing home bed. He loved his family, and he loved his country. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16, at Bethlehem United Methodist Church, 321 Redland Road, Advance, conducted by the Revs. J. Mark Weekley and Donald Funderburk. The body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. The interment in the church mausoleum will follow with military rites. The family will receive friends at Vogler's Clemmons Funeral Chapel, Middlebrook Drive, 7-9 p.m. Monday and at other times at the home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Building Fund of Bethlehem United Methodist Church, 321 Redland Road, Advance, NC 27006, the Advance Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8719, P.O. Box 2232, Advance, NC 27006, or the Alzheimers Association, 919 N. Michigan Ave., Ste. 1100, Chicago, IL 60611.

REYNOLDS

MOUNT AIRY -- Mrs. Esther Mae Reynolds, 83, of Mount Airy, widow of Mr. Conrad Lee Reynolds, went home to be with Jesus Sunday morning Jan. 14, 2001, at the Village Care of King in King. Mrs. Reynolds was born Nov. 2, 1917, in Patrick County, Va., to the late Reid and Emma Pruitt Reynolds. She was a homemaker and member of Emmanuel Holiness Church. Surviving are two daughters, Kitty Vaughn Griffin and husband Jimmy of Winston-Salem, and Margaret Hiatt and husband Roger of Mount Airy; two sons, Ricky Reynolds and wife Sharon of Acworth, Ga., and David Reynolds and wife Kim of Mount Airy; 14 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren; and a special son-in-law, Calvin Vaughn Sr. of Mount Airy. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Reynolds was preceded in death by three sisters, Carrie Lambert, Annie Arnder and Nannie Reynolds and by two brothers, Clifton Reynolds and Claude Reynolds. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, at the Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy and conducted by Rev. Mac Cassell and Calvin Vaughn Jr. with burial to follow in the Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Monday at the Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy and at other times at the home of her son David Reynolds, 155 Oak Ridge Circle, Mount Airy, and her daughter Kitty Vaughn Griffin, 5717 Stanleyville Drive, Winston-Salem.

SALMONS

Mrs. Joyce Lee Myers Salmons, 72, of Winston-Salem passed away Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds home. She was born March 20, 1928, in Forsyth County to Leslie Taft and Marie Cornelia Troutman Myers. She was of the Holiness faith. Survivors are her loving husband of 52 years, Mr. George Clark Salmons; one daughter, Mrs. Debra Vernon and husband Mark of Rural Hall; two sons, Mr. Jimmy Salmons and wife Patty and Mr. Mark T. Salmons and wife Beth R. of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, Jena Salmons of Winston-Salem and Vila Fleming of Fort Knox, Ky.; one great-great-grandson, Thomas Riley Fleming of Fort Knox, Ky.; and three brothers, Mr. Wayne A. Myers and Mr. Donald R. Myers of Winston-Salem and Mr. James W. Myers of Kernersville. A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday Jan. 16, 2001, at Crestview Memorial Park, Rural Hall, with the Rev. Charles Sparks and Rev. Beechard Morefield officiating. The family will receive friends at the daughter's home after the service. Memorials may be made to Kate B. Reynolds Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. Hayworth-Miller Rural Hall is in charge of the arrangements.

UNDERWOOD

Ms. Dorothy Baynes Underwood, 73, of Winston-Salem, passed away Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born to the late Sydney Baynes and Florence Brame Baynes on July 11, 1927, in Winston-Salem. She was married to the late Robert L. Underwood for 32 years. He preceded her in death in February of 1989. She was a homemaker and a beautiful person who loved life. Everywhere she went she made a friend. Drawing, singing and playing the piano were a few of her favorite things. She attended Southside Baptist Church and was a charter member of Konnoak Hills Moravian Church. Her four children, Bobby Underwood, Linda Worley, Mark Underwood and Susan Underwood; one sister, Patricia Sheets; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren survive her. A graveside funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16, at Forsyth Memorial Park. The Rev. James Newsome Jr. will officiate. Visitation will be held 7-9 p.m. Monday at Vogler's Reynolda Road Funeral Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. The family would like to thank all the people at Hospice for their understanding and patience, but most of all, the love shown to our mother and to us. "Thank you ever so much."

WERTS

Mr. Curtis Werts, affectionately known as "Toot," of 2022 Harrison Ave., was born in Prosperity, S.C., to the late Pat and Elizabeth Adams Werts. He attended the Winston-Salem Forsyth County public schools and was a graduate of Atkins High School. Mr. Werts was a veteran of the United States Air Force and a retired employee for the United States Postal Service where he served as the shop steward for Local 305 National Post Office Mail Handler and as a member of the Postal Retirement Club. He was a member of United Progressive Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, trustee and also on the men's choir. In the community he was loved by everyone and was a mentor to many. He was preceded in death by his parents and by a sister, Ernestine Thomas. "Toot" departed this life Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, at the Forsyth Medical Center following a period of illness. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16, at United Progressive Baptist Church with Rev. Harry Reynolds officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen cemetery. The family will receive friends 1:30-2 p.m. at the church. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of the home, Viola H. Werts; three sons, Clifton (Sheila) Martin of Colorado Springs, Colo., Curtis Werts Jr. and James (Diane) Werts of Winston-Salem; four daughters, Bettina (DeCarlos) Campbell, Vivian Howard, Barbie Tucker and Christina Werts of Winston-Salem; 13 grandchildren, including devoted granddaughter Katrina Hill; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Mae Julia (Ralph) Clyburn of Philadelphia, Pa.; two brothers, Norman (Grace) Werts of Buffalo, N.Y., and James Edward (Gladys) Werts of Monroe Falls, Ohio; a devoted mother-in-law, Eva Hillian; three sisters-in-law, three brothers-in law and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

ALLRED

GREENSBORO — Mrs. Rena Mae Collins Allred, 89, of 4400 Lawndale Drive died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Allred’s funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, in the Forbis and Dick North Elm Chapel. Interment will follow in Guilford Memorial Park. Rena Collins Allred was born in Jones County March 4, 1911, to the late John and Ellie Simmons Collins. She moved to this area from Jones County and lived most of her life in Greensboro and Winston-Salem. Mrs. Allred was a member of Reedy Fork Baptist Church and the Myrtle Rebecca Lodge #51. In the early 1950’s Mrs. Allred joined with her husband, '`Ted,’‘ her brother-in-law, Grady Allred and his wife, Vivian to establish the first K&W Cafeteria which was in Winston-Salem. After her husband’s death, she continued to work for K&W for a number of years. Five nephews survive Mrs. Allred, Gregory Collins of Elkin, Roy Collins of Dickson, Tenn., Joe Collins of Claremont, Fla., Jim Wofford, Jr. of Raleigh and Tom Wofford of Gibsonville and numerous great nieces and great nephews. Her husband, Reggie '`Ted’‘ Allred, preceded Mrs. Allred in death in 1957. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at Forbis and Dick, North Elm Street.

APPLE

Mr. Worth Hamlington Apple, 84, of Winston-Salem died Jan. 14, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Nov. 4, 1916, in Alamance County to the late James Presley and Myrtle Pritchard Apple. Mr. Apple served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of Ardmore Baptist Church. He was retired from A&P as a store manager. After his retirement, he worked for Commercial Couriers for 15 years. He is survived by his wife, Bessie Hutchins Apple of the home; a son, Phil Apple and wife Teresa of Raleigh; three grandchildren, John Apple II, Alexandra Apple and James Apple; two sisters, Opal Apple of Greensboro and Millie Moore of Atlanta, Ga.; two brothers, Cecil Apple of Reidsville and Morris Apple of Trinity. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel by the Rev. Ty Talton and the Rev. Beechard Moorefield. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Ardmore Baptist Church, Youth Ministry, 501 Miller St., Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

BULLINS

MADISON — Mr. Javan '`Jake’‘ Bullins, 72, died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, at Stokes Reynolds Memorial Hospital. He was born in Stokes County Jan. 31, 2001, the son of the late William Hobert and Flora Hartman Bullins. He retired from UNIFI Inc. of Madison. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Betty Jane Mabe Bullins of the home; three sisters, Anise Mabe of Danbury, Rose Lee Brown of Asheboro and Evelyn Shelton of Greensboro; and six brothers, Odell Bullins of Walnut Cove, Edison Bullins of Greensboro, Wilmer Bullins, Dennis Bullins, Wayne Bullins and Kirby Bullins all of Madison. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at Nelson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. J.R. Shelton, Brother Tim Gentry and Elder Millard Shelton officiating. Burial will be in Wilson Primitive Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. at Nelson Funeral Home Chapel and other times at the home of his brother, Kirby Bullins.

CATO

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Miss Beverly Ann Cato passed away Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at Brookdale Hospital in Brooklyn. Miss Cato, a native of Winston-Salem, was born Aug. 8, 1949, to the late Bell G. Cato Sr. and Emma Ervin Cato. She graduated from Atkins High School in 1967. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Mr. Bell G. Cato Jr. and Mr. James Arthur Cato. She leaves to cherish her memories five brothers, George (Willie Ervin) Cato and David Cato of Winston-Salem, Bobby L. Cato (Sue) of Clinton, Md., Bernard E. Cato (Beverly) of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Preston L. Cato (Twanna) of Capital Heights, Md.; sisters Patricia E. Cato of Charlotte and Ciesta Cato of Anchorage, Alaska; and other relatives and friends. Family visitation and services will be held Wednesday evening, Jan. 17, 2001, from 7 to 9 in the chapel of Clark S. Brown & Son Funeral Home. The Rev. Bobby Cato, the Rev. Aldine Ingram and Elder Hylton Stone will officiate. Graveside services and interment will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 18 in Evergreen cemetery. Clark S. Brown & Son Funeral Home is in charge of services and arrangements.

CREED

MOUNT AIRY — Mr. Clayton Mitchell Creed, 60, of 414 Simpson Mill Road, Mount Airy, husband of Ruth East Creed, passed away Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001 at his home. Mr. Creed was born in Surry County on Aug. 19, 1940, son of Clayton Roscoe Creed and Nellie Venable George. Mr. Creed was the owner and operator of Creed’s Garage and was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include his wife, Ruth East Creed of the home; two daughters and a son in-law, Tammy and Bobby ring of Pilot Mountain and Tonya Creed of King; a son, Tony Creed of Mount Airy; five grandchildren, Sean Creed, Brittney Creed, Brandy Tilley, Dakota Tilley and Dustin Tilley; his mother and stepfather, Nellie and Otis George of Mount Airy; his father and stepmother, Clayton and Rosemary Creed of Mount Airy; a half-sister and brother in-law, Cheryl and Richard Bowman of Mount Airy; a half brother and sister in-law, Michael and Vicky Creed of Mount Airy; and two sisters in-law Linda Creed Benge and Norma Creed, both of Mount Airy. Mr. Creed was preceded in death by two brothers, Rondal Creed and Ray Creed. The funeral service will be held Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001 at 2 p.m. at Bryant’s Chapel Baptist Church. The service will be conducted by Rev. Bill Faw, Rev. Larry Crouse, and Rev. Keith Foster, with burial in the Bryant’s Chapel Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 7-9 p.m. at Bryant’s Chapel Baptist Church, where his body will remain until the funeral service. Moody’s funeral home of Mount Airy will be serving the Creed family.

FRYE

Mrs. Mae Caudle Frye, 89, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at Meadowbrook Terrace of Winston-Salem. She was born Dec. 10, 1911, in Yadkinville to the late Rev. Tom Caudle and Rosetta Wooten Caudle. Mrs. Frye was a member of Mount Carmel United Methodist Church for over 65 years. She was one of the founding members of Five Points Senior Citizens. She was a nurse’s aide at Forsyth Medical Center for 10 years. Mrs. Frye loved flowers and educated her family and friends about them. She will be greatly missed by her friends at Meadowbrook Terrace to whom she devoted her time helping others. She was preceded in death by her husband, J. Frank Frye and two grandchildren. Surviving are two sons, J.D. Frye and wife Becky of Winston-Salem and Charles Frye and wife Ginger of Raleigh and three daughters, Peggy Beckner and husband Gray and Wanda Gordon and husband Roger of Winston-Salem and Mary Alice Styers and husband Harold of Patrick Springs, Va. She was a devoted grandmother to 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are a brother, Dwight Caudle and wife Cherry of Waynesville. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Carmel Untied Methodist Church cemetery with the Rev. Ken Eller and the Rev. Bobby Holcomb officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel and other times at the home of a daughter, Wanda Gordon, 4615 Paula Drive, Winston-Salem. Memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of Meadowbrook Terrace for their care and kindness shown to them and to Mrs. Frye.

GLASS

BURLINGTON — Mr. George H. Glass, Jr., of 3916 Muhlenberg Court, Twin Lakes, Burlington, died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001 at Twin Lakes Center after a lengthy illness. Mr. Glass was born in Guilford County, the son of the late George Harper Glass and the late Grace Moose Glass. He was a retired employee of Borden Chemical/Mystik Tape. Mr. Glass was a very active member of Front Street United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the Men’s Bible Study Breakfast Group. He was a graduate of N.C. State University, where he played varsity baseball and the trombone for the Wolfpack Marching Band. After graduation, he went on to be an active member of the Wolfpack Club. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, where he was stationed in the South Pacific and Australia. After leaving active duty, he served in the U.S. Air Force Reserves for 29 years and retired at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Survivors include his stepmother, Mrs. Irene Glass, of Greensboro; his wife, Mrs. Virginia Qurnell, of the home; sons George H. '`Pepper’‘ Glass III, of Tampa, Fla., and Gregory Gee Glass, of Welcome; a stepdaughter, Mary Lynn Qurnell of Washington, a stepson, Robert Qurnell, of Moultrie, Ga.; sisters Mrs. Margaret Clapp and Mrs. Mary King, both of Greensboro; a half-sister, Mrs. Julia Wright of Greensboro; half-brothers Bennett Glass of Monroe and Harry Glass of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; four grandchildren. Mr. Glass was preceded in death by his first wife, Eloise Blackwelder Glass. The funeral will be Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001 at Front Street United Methodist Church, with the service conducted by Dr. William C. Simpson, pastor; Rev. Duke Lackey, associate pastor; and Dr. G. Robert McKenzie. Mr. Glass will be buried in Alamance Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Front Street United Methodist Church and its Men’s Bible Study Group, 136 S. Fisher St., Burlington, N.C. 27127. Rich & Thompson Funeral Service will be assisting the Glass family.
