HARRIS

Mrs. Louise Harris, 77, of Winston-Salem, died Monday morning at The Brian Center. She was born in Winston-Salem June 20, 1923, to Brewster Allen Scales and Fannie Taylor Scales. Mrs. Harris worked for Hanes Knitting Co. for 33 years and retired from Thomasville Furniture Co. after 16 years. She was a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Weldon Harris in 1981. Surviving are two sisters, Barbara Edwards of Fayetteville and Lillie Scales of Winston-Salem; a niece, Sandra Scales Fogle and husband John of Winston-Salem; a great niece, Kathryn Whisnant of Fayetteville; two great nephews, Allen and Darren Fogle; and two very special friends, Bea Tucker and Patricia Beard, all of Winston-Salem. The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Vogler and Sons Reynolda Road Chapel conducted by the Rev. B.A. Carroll. Interment will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Pleasant View Baptist Church, 1206 Pleasant View Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27015

HARTMAN

Mrs. Virginia Burckmyer Hartman of Brookridge Retirement Community, 1199 Hayes Forest Drive in Winston-Salem died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. A graveside service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church cemetery, Lincolnton with the Rev. John Shields and the Rev. J. Barry Kramer officiating. Mrs. Hartman was born in Culpepper, Va., to the late Louise Virginia Grimsley and Henry Griggs Burckmyer. She lived in Beaufort, S.C. from 1911 to 1939. She attended St. Mary’s School in Raleigh from 1927 to 1928 and graduated from UNC-G in 1932. She was a retired elementary teacher, having taught in Gastonia, Winston-Salem and Lincolnton for a period of 18 years. In 1939 she married Augustus Kenneth Froneberger of Gastonia. After his service in World War II, she and her husband moved to Lincolnton where she lived from 1948 to 1989. While there, she was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and later the First Presbyterian Church. Mr. Froneberger died in January 1872. She remarried Carl Robert Hartman of Lincolnton in 1974. Mrs. Hartman was active in church, school, civic and social organizations all of her life. She moved to Brookridge Retirement Community in November of 1989. She took pride in her membership in the D.A.R. She was preceded in death by her infant brother, Henry Burckmyer and her sister, Margaret Lloyd Burckmyer. Surviving are her children, John Daniel Froneberger of Linconton, Dr. Margaret Froneberger Carter of Winston-Salem and L.T.C. Thomas Mellon Froneberger of Fayetteville; three grandchildrer, Anna Virginia Froneberger of Winston-Salem and Margaret Susan Froneberger of Fayetteville and Kenneth Russell Carter of Winston-Salem; three stepdaughters, Alice Jean Hartman Rudisill of Hartwell, Ga., Marguerite Hartman Czarnecki of Asheville and Ralphine Hartman Bost of Birmingham, Ala.; five stepgrandchildren; and nine stepgreat-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 322 E. McBee St. Lincolnton, NC 28092; First Presbyterian Church, 114 W. Main St., Lincolnton, NC 28092; St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Winston-Salem, NC; or to Brookridge Retirement Community, Winston-Salem, NC.

HELTON

KERNERSVILLE — Mrs. Betty Lee Helton, 62, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Helton was born March 2, 1938, in Bell, Ky. a daughter of the late Herchel and Lula Peace Thacker. She was a member of the Eastern Star and president of the ladies V.F.W. Auxiliary. She was of the Baptist faith. Surviving are a son, James Michael Helton and wife Christle Smith of Louisburg; two daughters, Stephanie (Teddy) Bingham of Thomasville and Pam (Robert) Clinard of Kernersville; three brothers; and four grandchildren, David Michael Helton, James Michael Helton II and Daniel Clinard and Diamond Clinard. A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at the Hayworth-Miller-Cain Chapel by Chaplain A. G. Parker. Entombment will follow at Eastlawn Gardens of Memory Mausoleum. The family will receive from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

HIGGINS

Mr. James H. Higgins, better known as '`Jimmy’‘, 70, of Britthaven Nursing Home, Wilkesboro died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, at Britthaven Nursing Home. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Reins-Sturdivant Chapel with Mr. Earl Alexander officiating. Burial will be in Mountlawn Memorial Park. Mr. Higgins was born in Wilkes County, March 18, 1930, to Earlis and Lula Mae Longbottom Higgins. Mr. Higgins is survived by his mother, Ada B. Higgins of Salisbury and two sisters, Ella Mae Pierce of Trinity and Opal Miller of Rockwell. The family will receive at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in North Wilkesboro from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service.

HINES

Mrs. Qumillar King Hines, 66, of 2501 Peachtree St. passed away Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, at the Forsyth Medical Center. She was the daughter of the late Mary Ellen King and Author Robert King. She was a member of the Steadfast Life Changing Ministries Inc., where she was the mother of the church and a member of the usher board. She was preceded in death by a son, Herman Hickman Jr. and two brothers, Garrie Gene King and Robert Coy King. She leaves to cherish her memory five daughters, Loretta Pope (Winfred), Hilda Hickman, Mary Hardee, Sandra Ingram (Aldine) and Priscilla Penn (Reco); three sons, Wade Brady, Fred Lindsay Jr. and Randall Lindsay; 19 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Vernamae France and Brenda Carroll (Paul); a brother, Shelley Charles King; and a host of great-aunts, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at the Upper Room Churches of God in Christ Jesus with Pastor Aldine Ingram Jr. officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen cemetery. The family visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the church. (Russell)

HUDSON

Mr. Hoston Woodrow (H.W.) Hudson, 80, of Winston-Salem died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at his home. Mr. Hudson was born Jan. 3, 1921, in Surry County to John w. and Lethia Mickey Hudson. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran and was a member of Bible Baptist Church. After retirement, Mr. Hudson worked part-time with the Pander-Shipp Travel Agency. Surviving are his wife Beatrice Slack Hudson of the home; two step-daughters, Joni (Gary) Noble of Columbia, S.C., Jill Cline of Winston-Salem; three step grandchildren, Erin Cline, Shannon Brewer Noble and Scott Noble; a step great-granddaughter, Autumn Shea Brewer; a sister, Myrtle Hudson of Richmond, Va. and a niece, Barbara Jones of Richmond, Va. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at Hanes Grove United Methodist Church cemetery by the Rev. Don Jones. Gentry Family Funeral Service of Yadkinville, NC is in charge of arrangements.

LANGSTON

PFAFFTOWN — Mr. Andrew McDonald Langston, 81, of 4385 Mashie Drive, died Monday, January 15, 2001 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Mr. Langston was born Aug. 11, 1919, in Johnston County to Osborne Bright and Ophelia Weaver Langston. He was a member of St. Leo’s Catholic Church. In 1981, he retired from the Exxon Corp. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Inez L. Keen of Mt. Olive and Pearlie L. Adams of Angier. Mr. Langston is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary Royal Langston, of the home; one daughter, Barbara L. Lesnik, of Winston-Salem; three sons: Andrew M. Langston, Jr. of Running Springs, Calif., Jerry C. Langston of Winston-Salem, and Richard L. Langston of Burgaw; three granddaughters: Mary Lesnik, Maureen Monroy and Karen L. Vaccarro; one grandson, Christopher Andrew Langston; and seven sisters: Laverna Britt of Raleigh, Marceline Parker of Atlanta, Velma Blackwood of Jacksonville, Fla., Alice Connolly of Jacksonville, N.C., Florine Williams and Patricia McPhail, both of Raleigh, and Jo Anne Bowling of Broadway. A rosary will be held at 7 p.m. at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel with a brief visitation to follow. A funeral mass will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Leo’s Catholic Church by Father Herbert Burke A private burial will follow. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association of the Triad, 202 CentrePort Drive, Greensboro, N.C., 27409.

MASTIN

NORTH WILKESBORO — William Thomas '`Will’‘ Mastin, 86, of Monroe Road died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at Britthaven of Wilkesboro. Mr. Mastin was born Dec. 9, 1914, in Wilkes County to Monroe P. and Bessie A. Myers Mastin. He was a member of Fishing Creek Arbor Baptist Church. Surviving are three sons, Ray Thomas Mastin and wife Vera of Kernersville, Clay William Mastin and wife Patsy of Millers Creek, and Jerry Dean Mastin of Wilkesboro; two daughters, Doris Lorene Bumgarner of North Wilkesboro and Mrs. Jerrell '`Dianne’‘ Laws of Purlear; two brothers, Lee Mastin and M.P. Mastin Jr. of North Wilkesboro; a sister, Fern Mastin of North Wilkesboro; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17 at Miller Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Jason Whitley and the Rev. Ken Pardue officiating. Burial will be in the Fishing Creek Arbor Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 tonight at Miller Funeral Service in North Wilkesboro. MCGEE

PINNACLE — Mr. Solomon Alton '`Sam’‘ McGee of 1416 Perch Road passed away Sunday, Jan 14, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born in Forsyth County, the son of the late Solomon Augustus and Ivy Mabel Bostic McGee. Mr. McGee was a self-employed painting contractor and the owner of Sam’s Curb Market in Ogburn Station. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. Surviving are his wife, Linda Speaks McGee of the home; two daughters, Sandra McGee Hege of the home and Rose McGee Brown and husband, Randy of Linwood; a son, Gerald Alton McGee of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren, Samantha Hege and Michael Hege, Jr. of the home ad Darrell Ray McGee of Durham; a sister, Rachel Lloyd of Walnut Cove. Mr. McGee was preceded in death by two brothers and four sisters. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller Chapel in Rural Hall. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory in Walkertown. The McGee family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

MESSICK

Juanita Carlyse Conrad Messick, a Winston-Salem resident, wife of the late Ray Fearrington Messick and daughter of the late Nora and Edwin Conrad, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Oct. 26, 1915, in Forsyth County and graduated from R.J. Reynolds High School. She was a lifelong member of Calvary Moravian Church and had always adored gathering her large family together for the Christmas Love Feast as one of her wonderful family traditions. Her family was the light of her life and she was especially thrilled with the birth of each new baby. Survivors are one daughter, Sylvia Messick Gilley and husband James R.; four sons, Dale Carlyse Messick and wife Diane, Ralph Edwin Messick and wife Patricia, Larry Eugene Messick and Norma Messick, and William Penry Messick and wife Debby; grandchildren Michael Gilley and wife Donna, Elizabeth Gilley, Nita Gilley Dry and husband Todd Dry, Kevin Messick and wife Laura, Thomas Messick and wife Tina, Mark Messick, Amy Messick Paynter and husband Robert, Aaron Messick and Brent Messick, Alisa, Andrea and Andrew Messick, and Torrey and Ryan Rieser. Nita was also very proud of her adorable great-grandchildren Caroline Gilley, Gray and Mckenzie Gilley, Brandon and Chandler Dry, Holly and Jack Messick, Spencer and Grayson Messick, and Hannah and Robert Paynter. She is also survived by one devoted sister, Evelyn Conrad; and three brothers, Tom and a very devoted sister-in-law Pennie Conrad, James Conrad and wife Jackie, and Richard Conrad and wife Frankie. She was preceded in death by brothers Forrest Conrad and wife Nell, and Leo Conrad. Also deceased are sisters Hazel McLeod and husband Mac, Pauline West and husband Nat, Edrie McGhee and husband O.T. (Cub). Memorials may be made to Calvary Moravian Church, 600 Holly Ave., Winston-Salem, NC 27101, or to Trinity Center, Inc., 640 Holly Ave., Winston-Salem, NC 27101. The family will receive friends at Vogler’s, Main Street from 7-9 p.m. Monday, Jan. 15. Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16, at Calvary Moravian Church with burial to follow at Salem cemetery.

MYERS

ADVANCE — Mr. Tildren Ray Myers, 81, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at The Oaks at Forsyth after having been in declining health for at least seven years. He previously was a resident at Clare Bridge Assisted Living Residence from November 1997 until October 2000 when he became a resident at The Oaks. He was born in Advance to the late George Valentine and Lou Burton Myers on Oct. 22, 1919, the youngest of his siblings all of whom preceded him in death; Ollie Myers, Odell Myers, Annie Boger, Richard Myers, Sanford Myers, Will Myers, Sally Bodsford, Edd Myers, Mae Whicker and Robert Myers. He was educated at the Shady Grove School in Advance. As a young man, he was a member of Elbaville Methodist Church and sang in a quartet. He honorably served in the United States Army from July 29, 1940, until June 19, 1945, with Battery B, 78th Armored Field Artillery Battalion, 2nd Armored Division, and from June 12, 1946, until July 27, 1949, with Company B, 1st Battalion, 350th Infantry Regiment. He rose to the rank of sergeant and while in the Army participated in the sport of boxing. While serving with the 2nd Armored Division in the early 1940s, he was under the command of the legendary Major General George Smith Patton Jr. He served overseas Oct. 16, 1942, until June 8, 1945, as a veteran of the following campaigns: Algeria-French Morocco, Sicily, Normandy, Northern France and the Rhineland, all with the 2nd Armored Division. He was with the 2nd Armored Division when it made its famous night move of over 70 miles on ice and snow-covered roads to get in front of the Germans’ corresponding unit, the 2nd Panzer Division, and stopped the Germans’ deepest penetration in the famous Battle of the Bulge on Christmas Day, 1944. The 2nd Panzer Division was destroyed by the 2nd Armored Division that day and never fought again in World War II. This saved the port of Antwerp from being captured by the Germans. Following the war, he served in the American Army of Occupation in Italy. His decorations include the Distinguished Unit Badge, the American Defense Service Medal, two Good Conduct Medals, the EAMET Campaign Medal with five Bronze Service Stars, the World War II Victory Medal, the American Campaign Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal. He was employed with R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. 1945-46 and 1949 until his retirement in 1981. He married Mattie Lois Laird Myers on Sept. 17, 1950, at Bethlehem Methodist Church in Advance. She preceded him in death on Jan. 6, 1994. They had three children who, along with their spouses, survive him: the Rev. (Judge) Jimmy Laird Myers of Advance, Thomas Ray Myers and wife Diane of Charlottesville, Va., and Marla Myers Foster and husband Shane of Advance. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Troy Wayne Taylor, a student at Pembroke University; Shanna Leigh Taylor of Advance; and Katherine Suzanne Myers and Carolyn Jean Myers of Charlottesville, Va.; and by 12 nephews and 8 nieces. His hobbies included hunting and gardening. He was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church, and he was a life member of the Advance Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8719 and the 2nd Armored Division Association. He was a good man whose children never saw him mistreat or heard him say a cruel word to their mother, and he was constantly by her side during her battle with cancer. He loved the Lord Jesus Christ, spending his last days praising the Lord in song while lying in a nursing home bed. He loved his family, and he loved his country. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16, at Bethlehem United Methodist Church, 321 Redland Road, Advance, conducted by the Revs. J. Mark Weekley and Donald Funderburk. The body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. The interment in the church mausoleum will follow with military rites. The family will receive friends at Vogler’s Clemmons Funeral Chapel, Middlebrook Drive, 7-9 p.m. Monday and at other times at the home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Building Fund of Bethlehem United Methodist Church, 321 Redland Road, Advance, NC 27006, the Advance Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8719, P.O. Box 2232, Advance, NC 27006, or the Alzheimer’s Association, 919 N. Michigan Ave., Suite. 1100, Chicago, IL 60611.
