ELKINS
Mr. Earnest Lester Elkins of 4029 Lofter Court, Pfafftown, passed away Jan. 15, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. Mr. Elkins was born May 26, 1936, in Ashford, W. Va., and was preceded in death by his parents, the late Earnest and Gaye Dodrell Elkins. Mr. Elkins was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and served in the Korean War. He was employed as director of purchasing by television station WXII, a member of Winston-Salem Elks Lodge #449 and attended Hope Moravian Church. Surviving are his wife, Regina Miller Elkins of the home; a son, Mark Elkins of Taunton, Mass.; a daughter, Vicki Elkins Souza; a son-in-law, John Souza and three grandchildren, Melissa, Matthew and Michael of Lakeville, Mass.; four brothers, Ken Elkins, David Elkins, Delbert Elkins and Danny Elkins and three sisters, Ann Turley, Patty Mooney and Mary Sue Elkins and numerous nieces and nephews. A military graveside service will be held by VFW Post 4768 of Allen Creek, West Virginia at the Barker cemetery, Ashford, West Virginia Jan. 27, 2001. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Forsyth County Humane Society, 61 Miller St., Winston-Salem, NC 27104.
FLYNT
ELIZABETHTOWN – Aubrey R. '`Shrimp’‘ Flynt died Thursday, Jan. 11 at Duke University Medical Center. He was 71. Mr. Flynt had retired in 1989 after a lengthy service in the administration of Bladen Community College. He had joined the staff of the school in 1968. Since his retirement from his education career, he had worked as a special deputy and bailiff for the Bladen County Sheriff’s Department. Mr. Flynt was a former coroner of Bladen County and served for several years on the Bladen Community College Board of Trustees. He was a 32nd degree Mason and was a member of the Bladen County Shrine Club and the Sudan Shrine Temple. A native of Winston-Salem, he was a 1968 graduate of High Point College. He received a graduate degree in 1963 from Appalachian State Teachers College (now Appalachian State University). A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Saint Christopher’s Episcopal Church in Elizabethtown where he was a member, with full Masonic rites. Mr. Flynt is survived by several nephews. FOSTER
Mrs. Helen Nifong Foster, 75, of Fraternity Church Road, wife of George Leo Foster went home to be with the Lord on Jan. 15, 2001, after a recent illness. She was born Oct. 10, 1925, in Davidson County to the late Harvey Lee and Martha Scott Nifong. Mrs. Foster was of the Methodist faith. She was preceded in death by a son, James Lee Foster. Surviving in addition to her husband are two children, Rebecca Elizabeth and husband, Art J. Sivilla of Tallahassee, Fla., and David Leo and wife, Debra Hamlin Foster of Fraternity Church Road; four grandchildren, Michael and Kimberly Sivilla of Tallahassee, Fla., Amie Carlyle of Kernersville an Krysta Foster of Fraternity Church Road. A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at Parklawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel with the Rev. J. Mark Weekley, the Rev. Robert Williard and Mr. G.K. Foster officiating. Entombment will follow the service. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. FOSTER
Mr. Virgil Gray Foster, 75, of 3949 U.S. Highway 64 West, Mocksville, died Monday at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. Born in Iredell County on Feb. 28, 1925, he was a son of the late Raymond Clay Foster and Fannie Laird Foster. He was a retired sawmill operator and the founder of Midway Campground. He was an active member of Union Chapel Baptist Church having served on the maintenance committee and was a member of the senior adult Sunday school class. He served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army having fought in nine battles, one of which was the Battle of the Bulge. He received the Purple Heart, the Good Conduct Medal, and Five Bronze Stars. He was also a member of the Harold Littlefield Chapter #68 of the D.A.V. of Statesville. On April 24, 1953, he married the former Olivia Stroud who survives. Also surviving is a son, Dennis G. Foster and his wife, Patsy of Mocksville; a daughter, Mrs. Sandra Kay Vestal and her husband, Steve of Mocksville; and four grandchildren, Chris Foster of Kernersville, Clay Foster of Greensboro, Emily Snider and her husband, Bryan of Mocksville and KayRon Vestal and her fiancé Brian Lantz of Hickory and a great grandson, Matthew Snider of Mocksville. Also surviving is a brother, Zaro E. Foster of Odessa, Texas and two sisters, Mrs. Dorothy F. Greene of Jacksonville, Fla. and Mrs. Gwendlyn F. Smith of Mocksville. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Union Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Bobby Henderson and the Rev Jimmy Myers officiating. The body will lie in state for 30 minutes before the funeral service and burial will follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Chris and Clay Foster, Byran Snider, J.D., Michael and Randy Stroud. Full military rites will be accorded at the graveside by V.F.W. Post #2031, Harold Littlefield Chapter #68 and American Legion Post #217, all of Statesville. BALTIMORE, Md. – Mr. Ernest Rease Gibson, 86, of Baltimore, Md., formerly of Walnut Cove, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, after a brief illness. He was born to the late Ernest and Lucy Gibson in Stokes County. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Gibson of the home; a son, Ernest '`Buddy’‘ Gibson Jr. of Marrero, La.; five daughters, Ruth Bagby, Wendy McEachern and Benita Burton, all of Baltimore, Md., Deanna Cooke of Pikesville, Md. and Barbara Richardson of Reidsville; two brothers, John Gibson and Frank Gibson of Walnut Cove; a step sister, Ruth Watkins of Walkertown; a stepbrother, Otis Hughes of Roanoke, Va.; 20 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends in North Carolina. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Gospel Tabernacle in Baltimore. Family visitation will be from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church. HEATH
GERMANTON – Mr. Edward Preston Heath, 78, died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, at Stokes Reynolds Hospital. He was born in Stokes County to the late Robert William and Cassie Ann Gibson Heath. He served in the Army as a cook while stationed in India with the Quarter Master Corp for 38 months. He was a member of Red Bank Baptist Church and retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. with 32 years of service as a mechanic. Preceding him in death was a sister, Lillie H. James and five brothers, Rufus O. Heath, Abe L. Heath, John H. Heath, Robert J. Heath and Joseph B. Heath. Surviving is wife of 26 years, Lucy Lentz Heath of the home; a daughter, Bessie Heath Wright of Kernersville; three sons, Tony E. Heath (Kathy) of Burlington, William C. Heath (Ellen) and Roger O. Holder (Sue), all of Kinston; four sisters, Elizabeth Fansler of Thomasville, Inez Brown (L.G.) of Walnut Cove, Patty Griffin (Earl) and Sally '`Tip’‘ Fansler, all of King; a brother, Charlie E. Heath of Walnut Cove; grandchildren, Melinda Frye (Emory), Vickie Isley, Larry Isley, William Heath Jr., Thurmond Heath, Leethea Lentz, Lawrence Lentz, III and Larry Lentz; great grandchildren, Sydney Frye, Kayla Heath and Jonathan Isley and many nieces and nephews including a special niece, Debbie Banner. Mrs. Mary Louretta Henderson, 69, of 1980 Oklahoma Road, Roaring Gap, formerly of Winston-Salem, died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, at her home. She was born April 15, 1931, in Forsyth County to Charles Sebastian and Geneva Tuttle Harvey. Mrs. Henderson was a member of Liberty Grove Baptist Church in Wilkes County. She worked at Hanes Knitting Co. for 18 years. She also worked at Photo Mat, One Hour Photo and Mother and Daughter. Survivors include her husband, James Clyde '`Hard Rock Charlie’‘ Henderson of the home; a daughter, Joy Henderson Tanner of Mount Holly and a granddaughter, Amber Lauren Tanner of Mount Holly. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel.
HUBLEY
Charles H. Hubley III, (U.S. Navy) retired, 45, passed away at his residence Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001. He was born in Hanover, Pa., and had resided in Jacksonville since 1991. Upon graduation from James Buchanan High School in 1974 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and retired after 20 years of service. Survivors include his wife, Vicki P. Hubley; two children, Amanda and Charles IV, both now living in Orange Park, Fla., parents, Charles and Gloria Hubley of Saint Thomas, Pa.; three brothers, Daniel Hubley, Key West, Edward Hubley, Mullica Hill of New Jersey and Patrick Hubley of Mustang, Okla. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 4087 Hendricks Ave. Memorialization will be by cremation. PILOT MOUNTAIN – Mr. Junior Russell Love, 76, husband of Bonnie Adams Love of 994 Jessup Grove Church Road, Pilot Mountain, passed away Tuesday, January 16, 2001, at his home. He was born Nov. 7, 1924, in Surry County to the late Johnnie Blaine and Ida Frances Hall Love. Mr. Love was a brick mason, farmer, mechanic and a member of Jessup Grove Baptist Church. He was a beloved husband, father and friend. Survivors are his wife, Bonnie Adams Love of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Gilda and Dale Riddle of Pilot Mountain and Phyllis and David Lanier of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren, Tamson R. Venable, Morgan Riddle and Philip Lanier; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Thelma and Herbert Taylor of Westfield, Audrey Hauser of Wesfield and Clara Hutchens of Westfield. Mr. Love was preceded in death by two brothers, Eugene Love and Otis Love. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at Jessup Grove Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. LYTTON
Mr. Norris Ray Lytton, 69, of White Plains Road, Roaring River died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, at his home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at Roaring River Baptist Church with the Rev. Rex Foster and the Rev. Lonnie Brown officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mr. Lytton was born Oct. 1, 1931, in Wilkes County to M.H. and Eula Alexander Lytton. He was retired from Chatham Manufacturing after 33 years of service as a truck driver. Mr. Lytton served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Daron Hayes and a brother, W.R. Lytton. He is survived by his wife, Betty Jo Sparks Lytton of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Donna and James Davis of East Bend; a son and daughter-in-law, David and Sharon Lytton of Millers Creek; a sister, Faye Sparks; three grandchildren, Kara Lytton and Amanda Lytton, both of Millers Creek and Ashley Hayes of Mulberry. MCHONE
Mr. Lewis Hall McHone, 76, of Rural Hall, the husband of Mrs. Vicie Wall McHone, passed away Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. McHone was born in Surry County, Jan. 1, 1925, to Marion and Stella Hall McHone. He was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Stanleyville. Mr. McHone served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Neundoff DE200 as a seaman first class. He was in the South Pacific. He received the American Theater Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Medal with four stars. He also received the Philippine Liberation and Victory in World War II medals. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Vicie Wall McHone of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, R. Michael and Patsy McHone of Kernersville; a twin sister, Louise McHone Brown of Lowgap, and a brother, Howard McHone of King. In addition to his parents, Mr. McHone was preceded in death by six sisters and seven brothers. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy conducted by the Rev. Jonathan Rogers. PAYNE
Mr. William Lee Payne Sr., 81, of 3460 York Road died Monday evening at Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center. He was born on April 18, 1919, in Winston-Salem to Thomas Alan Payne and Bertha Coleman Payne. Mr. Payne served with the U.S. Army during World War II. He was deeply devoted to his family. For many years he was a member of Parkway Presbyterian Church, where he had served as a deacon, elder and Sunday school teacher. He was a gifted artist and was an avid golfer. For 46 years, Mr. Payne worked for the Winston-Salem Journal, retiring in 1983 as Production Director. Surviving are his wife, Mary Fox Payne of the home; a son, William Lee Payne, Jr., and his wife, Joy, of Augusta, Ga.; a daughter, Jane McKinney and her husband, Bill, of Greensboro; four granddaughters, Amy Lanier of Birmingham, Ala., Patricia Gumbrill of Atlanta, April Payne of Augusta, and Kim Ready of Boston; four sisters, Frances Roesel of Winston-Salem, Grace Hubbard of Richmond, Va., Laura Parker and Rae Campbell of West Palm Beach, Fla.; several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be at Parkway Presbyterian Church Thursday at 1 p.m. conducted by Rev. Daniel C. Wilkers and Rev. Jonathan Freeman. Mr. Payne will lie in state from 12:30 p.m. until service time. Interment will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. There will be no formal visitation but friends are welcome to call at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel Wednesday afternoon or Thursday morning. WARD
Mrs. Grace Edith Yarborough Ward, 97, former resident of 105 Cornell Drive, High Point died Jan. 15, 2001, at 2:15 p.m. at the GrayBrier Nursing and Retirement Center. She was born Jan. 30, 1903, in Davidson County, a daughter of the late Alphaus Aaron and Barbara Frances Beall Wheeler Yarborough. A resident of High Point most of her life, Mrs. Ward was a homemaker and was a charter member of Hilliard Memorial Baptist Church where she was the pianist for many years and was also a member of the Worldwide Adult Sunday school class. She was married to William (Roby) Ward who preceded her in death in February 1972. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, June Bivins and two grandchildren, Gary Bivins and Cathy Bivins Johnson. Surviving is a daughter, Evelyn Ward Hutchens of Winston-Salem; two sons, Wendell R. Ward and wife, Jackie of Thomasville and Ronald W. Ward and wife, Glenda of Archdale; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Hilliard Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. John Allard and the Rev. Ray Hamilton officiating. Burial will follow in Floral Garden Park cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale and at other times at the home of Ronald Ward, 204 Rivermeade Drive, Archdale. BERRIER
Mrs. Elzie Pitts Berrier, 106, of Midway School Road died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, in Britthaven of Davidson Nursing Center. She was born Jan. 11, 1895, in Davidson County the daughter of the late George Ransome Pitts and Julia Livengood Pitts. Mrs. Berrier was a homemaker and a member of Canaan United Methodist Church where she was a former Sunday school teacher, a member of the Emma Clodfelter Sunday school class and was lay person of the year. She was married to Harvey Phillip Berrier who preceded her in death June 29, 1965. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Helen Gray; and two sons, Ray E. Berrier and G. Everett Berrier. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Maude Hartman, Mrs. Florence Warden and Mrs. Violet Nichols all of Winston-Salem; five sons, J. Clyde Berrier, H. Paul Berrier, Clay P. Berrier and John P. Berrier all of Winston-Salem and Dr. Floyd L. Berrier of Huntersville; 23 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and 27 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at Canaan United Methodist Church with the Rev. Wade Childers and the Rev. Lee Strange officiating. The interment will be in the church cemetery.
