BLAKLEY

KING – Mrs. Edith Beasley Blakley, 79, of West King Street, died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Aug. 21, 1921, in Stokes County to John R. and Lillian Jackson Beasley. She was preceded in death by her husband, David Blakley in 1995. Surviving is a daughter, Judy Blakley of the home and a special nephew, Jimmy Beasley of King. She retired from Western Electric in Winston-Salem after 29 years of service. Edith was a member of First Baptist Church in King where she had taught Sunday school and helped to organize the special ministry class. She had volunteered much of her time with the King Outreach Ministry, the Meals-On-Wheels program, assisting with the Inner Rhythm Choir and had also helped in the canned food section of the Stokes County Fair. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at 2 p.m. in the First Baptist Church in King with Dr. John Wren, Chuck Beasley and Ron Voss, ministers, officiating. Burial will follow in the King Memorial Park. The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Slate Funeral Home in King. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Mission Fund, P.O. Box 481, King, NC 27021 or Rural Hall Church of Christ Mission Fund, P.O. Box 146, Rural Hall, NC 27045.

GRIFFIN

SANDY RIDGE — Mrs. Mary Bennett Griffin, 82, formerly of Sandy Ridge died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, at Oak Summitt Nursing Home in Winston-Salem. The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at Delta United Methodist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Mrs. Griffin was born in Davie County. She was a former employee of Burlington Industries Inc. and Macfield Inc. and was a member of Delta United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Griffin; parents Joseph A. and Myrtle Carter Bennett; a daughter, Tina M. Griffin; and a son, Clarence Griffin Jr. Survivors include her sons, Douglas Griffin and wife Phyllis of Patrick Springs, Va. and Tony Griffin of Madison; daughters Nancy G. Spencer and Judy G. Stanley and husband Doug of Sandy Ridge; brothers David and Fletcher Riggs of Martinsville, Va. and Wayne Riggs of Stoneville; sisters Thelma Newman and Elsie Cahill of Martinsville; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at Colonial Funeral Home and other times at the residence of her daughter, Nancy Spencer, 1341 Ray Wilson Road, Sandy Ridge. KIRK

Mrs. Brenda '`Dianne’‘ P. Kirk, 53, of Winston-Salem died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Aug. 30, 1947, in Danville, Va. to Otis Wayne and Thelma Neely Pressley. Mrs. Kirk was a member of Abundant Grace Tabernacle. She was preceded in death by her foster mother, Ann Wallace. Surviving are her loving husband, William G. Kirk of the home; two sons, John Clayton Jackson of Carolina Beach and Douglas Ryan Buckner of the home; four stepchildren; 16 grandchildren; three sisters; and two brothers. A graveside service will be 3 p.m. Friday at Parklawn Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Mike Jefferson officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.

MACEMORE

HAMPTONVILLE — Ms. Nellie Jane Macemore, 95, died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2001, at Yadkin Heritage Care. Mrs. Macemore was born Sept. 15, 1905, in Yadkin County to John William and Rosa Lee Cook Macemore. She was a homemaker and a member of Swaims Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Erma Macemore Combs; and four brothers, Dee Watson Macemore, Charlie Lester Macemore, Henderson Winfield Macemore and Walter Clarence Macemore. Surviving are two sisters, Esther Macemore Shutt and Lula Macemore Evans of Hamptonville and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19 at Swaims Baptist Church by the Rev. Isaac Hicks. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 18 at Gentry Family Funeral Home on Little Mountain Road, Jonesville and other times at the home of her sister, Lula Evans, 4245 Judge Road, Hamptonville.

MCILNAY

KERNERSVILLE — Mr. Robert '`Bud’‘ Welsh McIlnay, 78, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born June 16, 1922, in Omaha, Neb. to Grant and Ethel Welsh McIlnay. Mr. McIlnay was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline McIlnay; his son-in-law, Marvin Schulze; and two grandsons, David Schulze and Brent Weber. Survivors include a daughter, Kay Schulze of College Station, Texas; three grandchildren, Pam Mead and husband Craig of Toledo, Ohio, Vicki Weber and husband J. D. of Clemmons and bob Schulze and wife Lynn of College Station, Texas; nine great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter. A service and the burial will take place in Custar, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

MILLS

Mr. John L. Mills, 78, a retired technician with 42 years service at the National Institute of Standard & Technology died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001, at Claire Bridge of Winston-Salem. Until recently, Mr. Mills lived in Rockville, Md. He was born in Washington, D.C. where he attended Woodrow Wilson High School and later Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pa. Rm. Mills was a member and a deacon at Chevy Chase Presbyterian Church. His activities included camping, square dancing, woodworking and spectator sports. He is survived by his wife, Jennie R. Mills of Rockville; two children, Barbara A. Ramsey of Houston, Texas and Janet L. (Dr. Beverly) Jones of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren; and a brother, Shirley N. Mills of Moorestown, N.J. A memorial service for Mr. Mills will be conducted 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, in the chapel of Centenary United Methodist Church. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Carolina Piedmont North Carolina Chapter, 3420 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC 28215-3298.

MOORE

Mr. Derrict Cortez Moore, 42, of 730 Ferrell Court, Apartment 24 passed Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Oct. 15, 1958, in Winston-Salem the son of the late Yvonne C. Moore and Cornell '`Pete’‘ LeGrand. He was a graduate of East Forsyth High School, served in the U.S. Armed Forces and was a member of the Mount Zion Baptist Church. He leaves to cherish his memories, his fiancée, Ms. Shirley Quattlebaum and her daughter, Kertrilla; his beloved grandmother, Mrs. Eula M. Matthews; his father, Cornell '`Pete’‘ LeGrand; his sisters and brother, Debbie Thomas (Bryant) Valjean Moore and Bernard Moore (Beverlon); two nieces and two nephews; a loved nephew, Lamar Moore all of Winston-Salem; his uncles and aunts, Col. Bobby L. Moore (Geraldine) of Georgia, Robert Moore (Shirley) and Bernard Moore (Lynn), Loleane M. Williams (Bob, a faithful uncle) and Shirley Blackburn; close cousins are MST Ronnie Moore (Kim) of Texas, Nathan '`Rick’‘ Williams (Lisa), Bobby L. Moore Jr. (Sandra) of Maryland; and many other close cousins, friends, schoolmates and associates. Funeral services will be held 3:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at the Mount Zion Baptist Church with Dr. Serenus T. Churn officiating. Interment will be in the Evergreen cemetery. LEXINGTON — Mr. Aubrey '`Buddy’‘ Myers, 80, of Maegeo Drive died Wednesday morning at Lexington Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at First United Methodist Church where he was a member. The Rev. John Ferree and the Rev. Jill Alventosa-Brown. Burial will be in Forest Hill Memorial Park. Surviving are his wife, Delineva '`Denny’‘ Motsinger Myers of the home; sons James Brooks Myers and wife Carol of Lexington, David Barry Myers and wife Elaine of Hickory and John Douglas Myers of Winston-Salem; six grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and sisters Hazel Myers Nance and Eva Myers Haltom of Thomasville and Rose Myers Dietz of Hickory. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Davidson Funeral Home and other times at the home on Maegeo Drive, Lexington. Memorials may be directed to Mr. and Mrs. A.B. NICHOLS

Mr. F. Charles Nichols II of Winston-Salem died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Oct. 1, 1956, in Wilson County to Floyd C. and Aldaree Fulghum Nichols. Mr. Nichols was formerly employed by Southern Bell. Surviving are his parents of Winston-Salem; two brothers, Carroll Nichols and wife Selah of Pfafftown and Will Nichols of Winston-Salem; two nieces, Kristen and Katlen Nichols of Pfafftown; and his paternal grandmother, Essie Nichols of Pfafftown. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel by the Rev. Rick Speas. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

PARKER

Mr. Henry Bonson Parker, 82, of Clemmons, passed from this life Jan. 16, 2001. He was born March 12, 1918, in Yadkin County to James S. and Sally Hutchens Parker. Mr. Parker was preceded in death by his wife, Grace Durham Parker in July 2000. Survivors include two daughters, Barbara P. Lawson and husband, Terry and Shirley P. Griffin of Clemmons; three sons, Harold Parker and wife, Carol, Bobby Parker and wife, Angela and Charles Parker and wife, Dorothy of Winston-Salem; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and a brother, Ivan Parker of Jonesville. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons by the Rev. James Bowen. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.

PATTERSON

ADVANCE – John C. Paterson of Bermuda Run in Advance, formerly of English Hills in Hendersonville passed away Monday, Jan. 16, 2001, at his home. Born June 23, 1915, in Thorn Hill, Scotland to John and Jean Wiseman Paterson, he was a World War II veteran and a member of Centenary United Methodist Church. An avid golfer, he had traveled extensively with his wife. While living in Hendersonville, Mr. Paterson created and organized two charity golf tournaments featuring PGA Tour Professionals. Tournament proceeds benefited Pardee Hospital. His beloved wife Mabel Vert Paterson preceded him in death in 1999. Surviving are two sons, John C. Paterson Jr. and wife Lynn of Winston-Salem and William Bruce Paterson and wife Margaret of Greenville, S.C.; two daughters, Jessie P. Weber of Winston-Salem and Elizabeth P. Anderson and husband Jim of Shalimar, Fla.; and 10 loving grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers, Arthur R. Paterson and Walter D. Paterson both living in Florida anda sister, Anne P. Dugdale of Eastham, Mass. A dear sister-in-law, Gertrude Vert Prioli of Swampscott, Mass. and a special friend, Ruby Cox Preston of Pinnacle also remain. The family will receive friends from 10:15 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. Memorials may be made to Centenary United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 658, Winston-Salem, NC 27102-0658.

SMITH

Mr. James B. '`Jay’‘ Smith Jr., 63, of 5700 Belle Ave., Winston-Salem passed away at his residence Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001. Mr. Smith was born Sept. 30, 1937, to the late James B. Smith Sr. and Opal Marshall Smith. Surviving are five sisters, Jayne Sydney Jones, Betty Lavon Newbury, Nancy Shumate, Barbara and Leon Settle and Shirley Graley; three brothers, Bobby (Donnie) Smith, Jackie (Sandra) Smith and Buster Smith; seven sons, James Joseph '`J.J.’‘ Smith, Tony Smith, Michael Smith, Robert Smith, Andrew '`A.J.’‘ Smith and Christen Smith; and two daughters, Faye Barber and Deborah Smith. Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Johnson Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at the funeral home. Johnson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

SWAIN

SILER CITY – Jessie Motsinger Swain, 75 of 813 Woodland Drive, Siler City died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 N. Second Ave., Siler City by the Rev. Jim Wall. Burial will be held at Chatham Memorial Park in Siler City. Mrs. Swain was a native of Davidson County, a graduate of Campbell College and Wake Forest College. She taught elementary school for a short period after college and was a devoted wife and mother of three children. She was a member of First Baptist Church. Survivors are her husband, Ray F. Swain of Siler City; a daughter, Annette Swain of Atlantic Beach; two sons, Frank E. Swain of Oriental and Steve Swain of Emerald Isle; a sister, Ruth M. Kitchens of Winston-Salem; three grandsons; 3 granddaughters and two great grandchildren. Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at the Smith & Buckner Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of UNC, P.O. Box 1077, Pittsboro, NC 27312.

TONSOR

Patrick James Tonsor, 66, of 118 Bramton Court, Winston-Salem died Tuesday, Jan. 16 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. A mass of Christian burial will be 3:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19, at Our Lady of Mercy in Winston-Salem where he attended for 15 years. Father Jo Barry Angelini will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawn Memorial Gardens. He was born in Mitchell, Ill. Nov. 11, 1934, to Steven Tonsor Sr. and Rose Mary Schmidt Tonsor. He was retired from Owen’s Brockway where he worked for 35 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Surviving are his wife, Betty Cairns Tonsor; two sons, Tom Tonsor and his wife Dinah of Winston-Salem and Tim Tonsor and his wife JoAnn of Trinity; three grandchildren, Tracey Tonsor and Brandi Tonsor of Winston-Salem and Alyssa Tonsor of Trinity; brothers Steven Tonsor Jr. of Michigan, Bernard Tonsor, Gerald Tonsor and Edward Tonsor all of Illinois; sisters Mary Jean Jarvis and Katherine Warden of Illinois; and a first cousin, Ray Maag of Illinois. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Friday at Davidson Funeral Home-Hickory Tree Chapel and other times at 118 Bramton Court, Winston-Salem. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Our Lady of Mercy, 1919 S. Main St., Winston-Salem.

BARNES

TRINITY — Mrs. Linda Clay Barnes, 50, a resident of 2921 Tall Cedar Lane, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Barnes was born March 11, 1950, in Marlboro County, S.C., a daughter of Charlie Franklin and Stella Billings Clay. Mrs. Barnes was employed as a telecommunicator in the communication department of the Piedmont Triad Airport Authority. She was a professional hairdresser, having been associated with Kat’s Hair Salon in Sophia and the Hair Saloon of Archdale. She had previously worked at Rice Hosiery Line and was also a volunteer EMT with the High Point Rescue. She was preceded in death by her father, Charlie Franklin Clay, on Sept. 25, 1993. On March 22, 1970, she was married to Robert Barnes, who survives of the home. Also surviving are a daughter, Kellie Y. Barnes of Greensboro; a son and daughter-in-law, Mark L. Barnes and Michelle W. Barnes of Thomasville; her mother, Mrs. Stella Clay of the home; a sister, Mrs. Janice '`Jan’‘ Hilton and her husband, Keith Hilton of Randleman; and four grandchildren, Courtland Kelley, Brook L. Barnes, Zachary L. Barnes and Abigail B. Barnes. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service officiated by the Rev. Dale Johnston and the Rev. J.R. Gossett. Interment will follow in Floral Garden Park cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 Friday night at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the Center of Living-Home, Health & Hospice, P.O. Box 9, Asheboro, NC 27204.
