BURNEY

PFAFFTOWN — Mrs. Ellen Merritt Burney died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at her home. She was born March 4, 1916, in Bibb County, Ga. to the late Robert Lee and Nannie Thomas Merritt. Ellen attended Young Harris College and was employed by the U.S. Government before her marriage in 1946 to Reford Bert Burney. Her husband preceded her in death in 1980. She is survived by a sister, Nancy Merritt Banks and husband Leveret of Gallatin, Tenn.; three daughters, Nancy Burney Douglass and Carol Burney Caddo of Pfafftown and Ellen Burney and husband Pepe Vazquez of Hueva, Spain; four grandchildren, Joyce Douglass Avy and husband Todd of Winston-Salem, Rafael Vazquez of Pfafftown and Elena and Jose Vazquez of Hueva, Spain; two great-grandchildren, Susannah and Christian Avy of Winston-Salem; and a number of nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20 in the Angel Room at Calvary Baptist Church. The family will receive friends at the church following the service. Memorials may be made to Hospice Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103 or the Elizabeth and Tab Williams Adult Center of Senior Services, 231 Melrose St., Winston-Salem, NC 27103. Arrangements by Memorial Funeral Chapel.

CLAYTON

TOBACCOVILLE — Mr. Gary Keith Clayton, 44, died at his home Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001. A native of Forsyth County, he was born June 12, 1956, to John Gray and Martha Wrenn Clayton. Mr. Clayton was an avid hunter and a NASCAR fan. He worked for his father in the family business (John G. Clayton Well Drilling) as a driller. Mr. Clayton was preceded in death by his mother in 1977 and a brother, Charles Robert Clayton in 1987. He is survived by his wife of 13 years, Susan '`Michelle’‘ Harris Clayton of the home; five children, Pamela Clayton of Kernersville, Gary Keith Clayton Jr. and wife Murlette of Pfafftown, Christopher Clayton of Walkertown and Robert Seth and Brandon Lee Clayton of the home; six grandchildren; his parents, John G. and Dorothy Clayton of Winston-Salem; a brother, Jimmy Clayton and wife Janet of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Karen C. Laney and husband Roger of Chipley, Fla., and Mary Jane Wood and husband Kelly of Clemmons; two stepbrothers, Duane Albert and wife Sandy of Clemmons and Tim Albert of Winston-Salem; a stepsister, Sherri A. Stewart and husband Barry of Durham; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller Rural Hall Chapel with the Rev. Bruce Harris, the Rev. Calvin Mabry and the Rev. Randall Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the Clayton family cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives this evening at the funeral home.

CRANFILL

YADKINVILLE — Mrs. Ruby Nell Pinnix Cranfill, 71, died Tuesday, Jan. 16 at Forsyth Medical Hospital. Mrs. Cranfill was born Oct. 18, 1929, in Yadkin County to Banner and Rodemia Hutchins Pinnix. She was a homemaker and a member of Courtney Baptist Church. Surviving are a son, Jed Cranfill of Yadkinville; three grandchildren, Josh Cranfill, Tara Cranfill and Jason Cranfill; three sisters, Marie (Ben) Wood of Hendersonville, Louise Poteate of Boonville and Faye Spillman of the Willowbrook Nursing Center, Yadkinville; and two brothers, Marshall (Florence) Pinnix of Kannapolis and Richard Pinnix of Yadkinville. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20 at the Gentry Family Chapel by the Rev. Pattie Choplin. Burial will follow in the Yadkinville cemetery. There will be no formal visitation. Gentry Family Funeral Service of Yadkinville is serving the Cranfill family.

CROWE

MOCKSVILLE — The Rev. Coy Isaiah Crowe, 96, formerly of Roseland St., Greensboro died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2000, at Autumn Care of Mocksville. A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at the Community Evangelical Methodist Church located at 1275 Joe Moore Road, Thomasville with the Rev. Billy Carey officiating. Eaton Funeral Service is serving the Crowe family locally.

FRANCISCO

Mr. Paul S. Francisco, Jr., 61, of Winston-Salem died Tuesday, January 16, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born March 13, 1939, in Roanoke, Va. Mr. Francisco worked many years for McLean Trucking Co. and later retired from Yellow Freight. He was a strong member of the Teamsters Union, and an avid NASCAR, NHRA and Winston Cup fan. Surviving are his wife, Judy Francisco of the home; two sons, Rickey L. Francisco of Winston-Salem and Timothy W. Francisco and wife Hope H. of Chesterfield, Va.; three grandchildren, Adrian and Rickey Francisco II and Tyler Francisco; four sisters; three brothers; and the dear and loving friends who supported him through his last few years. A memorial service will be at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Mr. Kenneth Williams officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 4-A Oak Branch Drive, Greensboro, NC 27405 or the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 25086, Winston-Salem, NC 27114.

HANES

ADVANCE — Mr. Bill Hanes, 81, died Thursday, January 18, 2001, at his home. He was born August 17, 1919, in Davie County to Mike and Celia Faircloth Hanes. Mr. Hanes was a member of Macedonia Moravian Church. He was an avid wagon train rider and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Lucille Ward Hanes; two daughters, Shirley Hanes Cornatzer and Mary Ruth Hanes Dunn; and a grandson. Surviving are a daughter, Rachel Hanes Eckenrode of Advance; three sons, Ralph M. Hanes and wife Dianne, Kenneth Hanes and wife Brenda and Buck Hanes and wife Linda all of Advance; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a sister, Louise Hanes York of Clemmons; special friends, Shorty Bowles, Harold Stanley and many others. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at Macedonia Moravian Church with Pastor Reg Alderman and the Rev. Ronnie Craddock officiating. Burial will follow in the church graveyard. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel. Memorials may be made to Davie County Hospice, P.O. Box 848, Mocksville, NC 27028. HARDY

Mrs. Linda Kay Hardy, 49, a daughter of the late Roscoe Lee Smith was born Jan. 4, 1952, in Forsyth County. On Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, Mrs. Hardy’s soul took flight unto a land of a never setting sun at Baptist Hospital. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Sai’ Heed. Mrs. Hardy was a graduate of West Forsyth High School. Those who survive to cherish loving memories are her mother, Daisy Mae Blackburn of Winston-Salem; her husband, James Cecil Hardy of South Carolina; a son, James Cecil Hardy Jr.; a daughter, Lea Cheretta Hardy; and a grandson, Eric Murden Jr. all of Winston-Salem; two brothers, Robert and Roger Blackburn of Winston-Salem; six sisters, Mary Catherine Bowles, Alice B. Conrad, Vera Veronica Blackburn and Karen Elizabeth Crowell all of Winston-Salem, Carol Jean Everhart of Charlotte and Debra Louise Wallace of Mocksville; a very devoted friend and nephew, Diane Bailey Carter and Leon Conrad; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at the Frances S. and Jerry C. Gilmore Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Robert Bailey and the Rev. Rita Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 11 to 11:30 a.m. at the funeral home. The funeral cortege will assemble and leave from 1807 Longview Drive. HILTON

Mary Williams Hilton of Fleet St., Winston-Salem died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Hilton was born Feb. 10, 1930, in Davie County to the late Spencer F. and the late Martha Ireland Williams. Mrs. Hilton was married for 49 years to the late Harrison '`Shorty’‘ Hilton and was retired from Hanes Knitwear and K-Mart. Also preceding Mrs. Hilton in death were two brothers, Elgin Williams and Dallas Williams, and a sister, Willie Mae Wood. She is survived by a son, Wayne Hilton of the home; a daughter, Vivian Younts and her husband Allan of Lexington; brothers George, Walter ‘‘Pete’‘ and Nathan Williams of Lexington, Bill Williams of Advance and Gurney Williams of Mocksville; and sisters Coleen Vestal and Alice Rummage of Lexington and Virginia Beauchamp of Advance. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19, at Davie Funeral Service Chapel, 416 Valley Road, Mocksville. The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20 at the funeral chapel with Pastor Blaine Possinger officiating. Burial will follow at Bixby Church of the Living God in Advance. Davie Funeral Service, LLC, 416 Valley Road, Mocksville will be serving the Hilton family.

HOLDER

KERNERSVILLE — Grace Echols Holder, 93, a former resident of 632 Hastings Hill Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at Bradford Village West rest home. She was born June 29, 1907, in Forsyth County to George W. and Sophina Hastings Echols. Grace was a member of the women’s Bible class. She retired from Belk Stevens with 20 years of service. Mrs. Holder was preceded in death by her husband, Nathan G. '`Nat’‘ Holder Sr.; her parents; four brothers, Fred, Bill, Raymond and Cliff; and a sister, Vora. Surviving are a son, Nathan G. Holder Jr. and wife Linda of Kernersville; a grandson, Jeff Holder (Melissa) of Anchorage, Alaska; a granddaughter, Amy Hickman (Lee) of Conway, S.C.; and four grandchildren, Madisen Holder, Thomas, Samuel and Jade Hickman. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at Kernersville Moravian Church Chapel. Burial will be in the church graveyard. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at Hanes-Lineberry-Pierce Chapel, Kernersville, and other times at her son’s residence at 638 Hastings Hill Road, Kernersville. Memorials may be sent to Kernersville Moravian Church Kitchen Fund or Organ Fund, 504 S. Main St., Kernersville, NC 27284. The family wants to recognize the staff of Bradford Village West for the constant love and care they gave her.

JACINTO

Ramulo C. Jacinto, MD, CMD, 66, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001. Dr. Jacinto was born in Laoag City, Philippines, May 19, 1934, to Agustin Jacinto and Cristina Cruz. Dr. Jacinto served as captain of the U.S. Army Medical Corps in the Vietname War from 1966 to 1969. He received the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal with two bronze service stars. He received his medical degree in 1962 from Manila Central University, Philippines. He did his medical internship at R. E. Thomason General Hospital in El Paso, Texas, and his residency at Saint Mary’s Hospital in Tucson, Ariz., and at Bataan Memorial Hospital in Albuquerque, N.M. He finished his fellowship in pulmonary disease at the Methodist Hospital Cardiopulmonary Institute at Southwestern Medical School at the University of Texas. He practiced at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Grand Junction, Colo., and Beckley, W.Va. Since 1975 Dr. Jacinto had his private practice in Winston-Salem, where he practiced internal medicine with a specialization in pulmonary disease and geriatrics. Dr. Jacinto was board certified with the American Board of Internal Medicine. He also received his certificate with added qualifications in geriatric medicine and was a certified medical director. He received the Geriatrics Recognition Award as well as the American Medical Association Physician Recognition Award. He was admitting physician to Forsyth Medical Center for Cross Care Inc. In addition he served as the medical director at Pellcare Nursing Home and Britthaven Kernersville Nursing Home. He was also the assistant medical director at the Winston-Salem Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center. He was a member of Saint Leo the Great Catholic Church. He was a beloved husband, father, mentor, colleague, physician and friend. He is survived by his wife, Veronica, and four children, Romel of San Francisco, Calif., Kathryn of New York City, N.Y., Randy of Winston-Salem and Christine of Boston, Mass.; his brother and wife, Alfred and MaryLou Jacinto of El Paso, Texas, and two sisters, Lucy Baria of California and Mary Dalupang of the Philippines. The family wishes to thank his patients and the entire medical community for their kindness and support for 25 years. The Jacinto family will receive friends and family from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19, and Sunday, Jan. 21, at Vogler & Sons Funeral Home in Clemmons. A funeral mass will be held at Saint Leo’s Church at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, and will be directly followed by a reception from noon to 3 p.m. Jan. 20 at the Holiday Inn Hanes Mall. A military interment service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 22, at National cemetery in Salisbury. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Saint Leo’s Church Columbarium Fund, 332 Springdale Ave. Winston-Salem, NC 27104.

LESCAULT

Mr. A. H. '`Les’‘ Lescault, 81, of 2920 Robinhood Road died Dec. 26, 2000, in Port St. Lucie, Fla. He retired from the Air Force in 1959 and was a resident of Winston-Salem for the past 41 years. After retirement, he was active with the Forsyth County Little League and then the local stamp club. His wife, Margaret Church Lescault, and a daughter, Peggy, preceded him in death. Survivors include his daughter, Cecile Adams of Stuart, Fla., and two grandsons, Chris and Jason Adams of Los Angeles, Calif. Graveside services will be held in Arlington cemetery on Jan. 24 at 3 p.m.

MARSH

Mrs. Mary Donathan Marsh, 68, of 55 Carter Circle, Winston-Salem, died Thursday morning, Jan. 18, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Feb. 2, 1932, in Yadkin County to Riley H. and Ellen J. Donathan. Mrs. Marsh retired from R.J. Reynolds in December 1987 with 28 years service. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thurmond Albert Marsh; her parents; and three brothers, Walter, Wilbur and Wendell Donathan. Surviving are four children, Susan (Don) Doty of Harrisburg, Kenneth (Becky) Marsh and Roland (Beverly) Marsh, all of King, and Michael Marsh of the home; a sister, Ms. Ruth Watson of Mt. Airy; two brothers, Jack Donathan of Alexandria, Va., and William E. Stuart-Donathan of Deltona, Fla.; eight grandchildren; and three great- grandchildren. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel by the Rev. Jack Casstevens and Father Larry Donathan. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

MARSHALL

RURAL HALL — Mr. H. Vance Marshall Sr., 97, passed away Thursday morning, Jan. 18, 2001. Vance was a long-standing member of the Rural Hall Church of Christ, serving as deacon, elder and Sunday school teacher. He was an avid supporter of the church softball team. He was a charter member of the Rural Hall Civic Club, a member of the Rural Hall Volunteer Fire Department and a past member of the Rural Hall School Board. By trade, he was a farmer and a carpenter. Vance was preceded in death by his son, Bill Marshall one week ago, Jan. 12, 2001. He is survived by his loving wife of over 71 years, Juanita Moore Marshall. Also surviving are two sons and three daughters-in-law, Henry and Mae Marshall of Raleigh, Karl and Barbara Marshall of Paris, Ill. and Martha '`Marty’‘ Nance Marshall of Winston-Salem; five grandsons, Ty, Tobi, Todd, Trent and Troy; a granddaughter, Tonya Oliver; 11 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at the Rural Hall Church of Christ with Ron Voss, Minister, officiating. The family will receive friends and relatives in the church following the service. A graveyard committal service will follow at 3:30 p.m. in the Salem Chapel Church cemetery on Highway 311. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Rural Hall Church of Christ or Salem Chapel Church cemetery Fund. (Hayworth-Miller Rural Hall Chapel is in charge of arrangements.)
