ADAMS
GERMANTON - Mr. Robert Guy Adams, loving husband and devoted father and grandfather, went to be with the Lord on Jan. 19, 2001. Mr. Adams was born in Surry County on Dec. 20, 1931, the son of Bosey Isom and Sally Maude Webster Adams. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Stanleyville and had served in various capacities throughout out his church life. He was employed at R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. for 30 years, in the trucking department as a driver and as a supervisor. Mr. Adams is survived by his wife of 49 years, Mrs. Nancy Adams of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Randy and Cindy Adams of Rural Hall and Tony and Marcia Adams of Germanton; four grandchildren, Misty, Molly, Kelli and Christina; a sister, Carolyn Martin; and a brother, Glenn Adams. A sister, Magdalene Moorefield and a brother, Ray Adams, preceded Mr. Adams in death. Mr. Adams will be taken to the First Baptist Church of Stanleyville at 4:30 p.m. Sunday where funeral services will be conducted at 7 Sunday evening in the church Sanctuary by the Rev. Jonathan Rogers. The family will receive friends following the service. Burial will be 11 a.m. Monday in the church cemetery. ANSLEY
Mrs. Nancy Whitaker Ansley, 63, of 2240 Sunderland Road, N. 66 died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born Nov. 8, 1937, in Scotland County to the late Leonard Aaron and Minnie Miller Whitaker. Mrs. Ansley was a member of First Assembly of God. She is survived by her husband, Jack H. Ansley of the home; three sons; Douglas B. Ansley and wife Maryann of Louisburg, Kenneth B. Ansley and wife Janice of Lexington and Keith H. Ansley of Dobson; a daughter, Jacqueline A. Wilkins of Belews Creek; five grandchildren, Melissa Ansley, Lauren Wilkins, Matthew Ansley Michele Hundley and April Earles; and two great-grandchildren, Zachary and Morgan Earles; five brothers, Hervey, Gene, Bill, Ray and Mike Whitaker; and three sisters, JoAnna Parkhurst, Jeanette Collins and Tina Foster. Funeral Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, at First Assembly of God Chapel by Pastor Bill Balance and Pastor Selby McManus. Entombment will be in Gardens of Memory, Walkertown. ATKINSON
Mrs. Frances Sharpe Atkinson, formerly of Winston-Salem died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, in Westford, Mass., after a lengthy illness. Mrs. Atkinson was born in Winston-Salem to the late William Henry and Nettie Emma Smothers Sharpe and was the youngest and last surviving of 11 children. She graduated from R.J. Reynolds High School and attended Salem College and lived and worked most of her life in Winston-Salem. She had been a member of Fries Memorial Moravian Church. She worked for many years with the local Girl Scouts as a scout leader and in later years served on the Piedmont Area Girl Scout Council. She was known for her thoughtfulness and helping others and particularly enjoyed working with young people and participating in scouting activities. She will be missed by her many friends and extended family members. The family extends special thanks to her caregivers, Katrina McGun (Virginia), Mareen Murray (Massachusetts) and Barbara Riley (Massachusetts). Mrs. Atkinson was preceded in death by her husband, John D. Atkinson in 1995 and a daughter, Marion E. Hand in 1993, late of Richmond, Va. Surviving are two daughters, Leslie A. Thomas of Westford, Mass. and Mary L. Atkinson of Annandale, Va.; a son, William E. Atkinson of Raleigh; son-in-law J. Reed Hand of Harrison City, Pa.; grandchildren Brandy A. Kuhn and husband David of Clayton, Jewel L. Atkinson of Raleigh, Emma F. Hand of Arlington, Va., and Randall A. Hand of Blacksburg, Va.; and a great-grandchild, Megan S. Kuhn of Clayton. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23 at Vogler Reynolda Road Chapel conducted by the Rev. Stuart Zimmerman. Interment will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. BECK
MOCKSVILLE - Mr. Edward Lee Beck, 66, of Ed Beck Road died Thursday morning at Forsyth Medical Center after a short illness. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Bear Creek Baptist Church, with the Rev. Cecil Wetherholt and the Rev. Richard Eskew officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family request memorials be considered for the Bear Creek Baptist Church Building Fund, 268 Bear Creek Church Road, Mocksville, NC 2028 or to a charity of the donor's choice. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the services on Sunday. Mr. Beck was born in Davie County on April 24, 1934, to Robert E. and Louise Brinkley Beck and was retired with 26 years of service from Ingersoll-Rand. Since retiring from Ingersoll-Rand, he had been the custodian at Wm. R. Davie School. He was a graduate of Farmington High School, class of 1954. Mr. Beck had been a member of Bear Creek Baptist Church all of his life and a member and chairman of the church building committee for the new fellowship hall. He was first chief and organizer of Wm. R. Davie VFD and served on the board of directors for the past four years. He was a member of the Davie County Rescue Squad and was a member of the Mocksville Masonic Lodge. He was a former member of North Davie Ruritan. Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Edith Howard Beck of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Marcia and Mickey Lambe of Mocksville; a son and daughter-in-law, Ricky and Nancy Beck of Mocksville; three granddaughters; two great-granddaughters; a great-grandson; a stepgrandson; a stepgranddaughter; a brother and sister-in-law, David Wayne and Ruth Beck of Mocksville; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. The family will be at Eaton Funeral Home from 6 to 8 Saturday night and other times at the residence.
CALLOWAY
Mr. Duried Odell Calloway, 74, of Winston-Salem died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born April 23, 1926, in Yadkin County to Duried Cranford and Daisy Holcomb Calloway. Mr. Calloway was owner and president of Calsto Heating and Cooling Inc. He was a member of Bethabara Moravian Church and was an avid fisherman who enjoyed saltwater fishing. A son, Timothy Joel Calloway, preceded him in death in June 1999. Surviving are his wife, Jewell Foster Calloway of the home; a son, Gregory W. Calloway and wife Rosie Calloway of Winston-Salem; two daughters, Suzanne Calloway Cockerham and husband John Cockerham Jr. of Tobaccoville, and Lisa Gail Calloway of Largo, Fla.; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and special friends, Tom and Lib Miller and sons, Tripp and Eric. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Forsyth Memorial Park with the Rev. Donald Griffin officiating. DEAN
Mr. Wilburn Riley '`Peanut" Dean, 83, of Winston-Salem, died Jan. 19, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. He was born in Forsyth County on July 30, 1917, to John Leroy and Maggie Foltz Dean. He was a member of Friedberg Moravian Church. Mr. Dean served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of the Clemmons VFW Post 9010. He was a member of Travelers Protection Association. Wilburn had retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., with more than 22 years of service. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Etta Bottoms Dean. He is survived by two brothers, Raymond '`Ray" Dean of Winston-Salem and Edward L. Dean of Midway; several nieces and nephews; and a very special friend, Faye Cashion. Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel, with the Rev. G. Thomas Shelton and the Rev. Norwood Green officiating. Funeral services for Mr. Landon '`Doc" Knox Dodd, 64, of 3943 Waddell St., Winston-Salem will be held 1 p.m. Sunday at Locust Grove Primitive Baptist Church in Westfield; Elder James L. Martin will be the eulogist. Burial will follow in France Memorial cemetery in Pinnacle. He was born in Pinnacle Nov. 4, 1936, to Elder Thomas R. Dodd and the late Mrs. Pearlie Rosie Reynolds Dodd. He died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem and was a retired employee of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. after 24 years of service. Surviving g are his father, Elder Thomas Roland Dodd of Pilot Mountain; three sisters, Ms. Glennie Mae Dodd of Pilot Mountain, Mrs. Margie D. Johnson and husband James of Winston-Salem and Mrs. Opal D. Brim and husband Glenn of Ararat, Va.; three brothers, Andrew Dodd and wife Minnie of Belews Creek, Roland Dodd and wife Diandre of Winston-Salem and Mr. Thomas R. Dodd and wife Karen of Poplar Bluff, Mo.; a very special and devoted friends of 28 years and her son and grandchildren, Mrs. Evelyn Rice, Mr. Fredrick Rice Sr., Mr. Fredrick Rice Jr. and Alex Rice all of Winston-Salem; nieces, nephews; an uncle, Mr. George Dodd and wife Evelyn of Steelton, Pa.; and other relatives and a host of friends. Mr. Brenon '`Ed" Edward Fulbright Sr., 60, of South Main Street died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born May 20, 1940, in Los Angeles to the late Brenon Moser Fulbright and Opal Williams Fulbright. He retired from the U.S. Marine Corps in 1977 as gunnery sergeant after serving three tours in Vietnam. He then joined Twin City Warehouses, where he had retired after 23 years of service. Mr. Fulbright was preceded in death by a daughter, Laura Elizabeth Huie. Surviving are two daughters, Lana Bryn Fulbright of Walkertown and Sandra L. Fulbright of Havelock; a son, Brenon Edward Fulbright Jr. and wife Cynthia of Winston-Salem; a sister, Sandra Fulbright Livengood of Winston-Salem; two nieces, Angie Gibbons and husband Ted, and Tiffany Reece and husband Michael; seven grandchildren; his extended family at Twin City Warehouses; and a very special friend, Kay Rogers. Full military graveside services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Gardens of Memory, Walkertown with Bill Teague officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. GODSEY
ETOWAH, Tenn. - Sara Josephine Miller Godsey, 86, a former resident of Athens, Tenn., and Merritt Island, Fla., died Friday night at the Etowah Health Care Center. A native of Ducktown, Tenn., she was a daughter of Oscar Hubert and Anna Reta McMahan Miller and was preceded in death by her husband, Reuben R. Godsey in 1978. She was a member of Keith Memorial United Methodist Church. Surviving are a daughter, Anne G. Catron of Etowah; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Reuben Raymond Godsey Jr. of Winston-Salem and Robert Lawrence and JoAnn Godsey of Palm Beach, Fla.; four granddaughters, Sara Catron Cox of Knoxville, Staci Lynne Catron Sullivan of Atlanta, Melanie Lynne Godsey and Erica Shea Godsey, both of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; two grandsons, Bradley Ray Godsey and Rancy Steven Godsey, both of Winston-Salem; a great-grandson, Harrison Kincaid; and a brother, Elmer Miller of Largo, Fla. Funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Jerry Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Stella Roberts and the Rev. Stewart Havey officiating. Interment will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Cedar Grove cemetery. GORDON
Woodrow Scales Gordon, 84, the husband of Edna Lentz Doub Gordon, died unexpectedly Friday, Jan. 19, 2001 at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Gordon was born Nov. 20, 1916, to Scales H. Gordon and Eva Norman Gordon in Surry County. He lived for many years in Stanleyville and moved to Winston-Salem in 1983. He was first married to the late Ruby Caudle Gordon, who died in 1981. Mr. Gordon was employed by the R.J. Reynolds Corp. for 35 years. For 15 years, he worked as a volunteer at Forsyth Medical Center. He was an active member of Christ Lutheran Church. Eleven siblings preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife, Edna Lentz Doub Gordon; a son, Phillip Woodrow Gordon and his wife, Wynn Potts Gordon; and two granddaughters, Lesley Gordon and Michelle Gordon of East Bend. He was preceded in death by a son, William Scales Gordon, who died in 1990. He is also survived by a stepson, Marvin Clay Doub and his wife Janet Thomas Doub of Winston-Salem; two stepdaughters, Melanie Doub Ahr and husband Sean; and Christina Doub Burton and husband Jeff; and three stepgranchildren, Andrew and Sarah Ahr and Nathaniel Burton. The family will receive friends at Hayworth Miller Silas Creek Funeral Chapel on January 21 from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services conducted by the Rev. Pierson Shaw and the Rev. J.T. GRAY
Mr. Frank Christian Gray, 61, of 395 Buckingham Road died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Gray was born in Winston-Salem on March 3, 1939, to Bowman Gray Jr. and Elizabeth Christian Gray. He graduated from the Woodberry Forest School in 1957 and attended Malvern College in England for one year before attending Yale University, from which he graduated in 1962. Mr. Gray was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. He was well-known in the community, serving on the Foundation Board of Forsyth Technical Community College and as a member of the Stratford Rotary Club and Sons of the American Revolution. Mr. Gray also served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was employed by R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. in the sales force in Yonkers, N.Y., and later spent several years in the marketing research area of the company before becoming a stockbroker for Merrill Lynch in Winston-Salem, from which he retired two years ago. Mr. Gray was preceded in death by his brother, Bowman Gray III in 1984. He is survived by his daughter, Miss Nathalie Lyons Gray of Minneapolis, Minn.; three sons, Frank Christian Gray Jr. of Chicago, Holt Bradshaw Gray of Richmond, Va., and Samuel Bemiss Gray of Minneapolis; and three brothers, Robert Daniel Gray of Greenwich, Conn., Lyons Gray of Winston-Salem and Peyton Randolph Gray of Philadelphia. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the home, 395 Buckingham Road. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. HENDRIX
Mr. Wilburn Thomas Hendrix, a Winston-Salem resident and retired Baptist minister died Jan. 18, 2001, at the age of 79 at Brookridge Retirement Center. He was born March 1, 1921, in Clay County, the son of the late Leonard and Mamie Hendrix. Before his retirement he served as pastor of several North Carolina churches for 50 years, the most recent being Northwest Baptist Church in Winston-Salem. Before his retirement, he also served as chaplain for Washington Group and as director of the Forsyth Prison Ministry. Survivors include his wife, Sadie Brooks Hendrix; a son, Steve and his wife Sheila; a daughter, Judy Hendrix Latham and her husband Bill; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. The funeral will be held at Old Town Baptist Church Sunday, Jan. 21 at 2 p.m. with interment to follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. Robert Paul '`Jack" Huff, 87, of 734 Mocksville Highway, Statesville, died yesterday. He was born in Yadkin County on Oct. 30, 1913, a son of the late Calvin Huff and Myrtle Bell Huff. He was half owner of Huff Recapping in Statesville. Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday at Union Chapel Baptist Church in Statesville. HUTCHINS
Mr. Hansel Gray Hutchins, 77, of 2800 Pioneer Trail, Winston-Salem died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born in Yadkinville Aug. 18, 1923, to Loftin Gray Hutchins and Hattie Lewis Hutchins. Mr. Hutchins served with the Army Air Corps during World War II and retired from McLean Trucking Co. in 1980. He was a longtime member of Beck's Baptist Church and the men's Sunday school class. He enjoyed camping and golf. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Cecil Hutchins. Surviving are his wife, Christine Deal Hutchins of the home; two sons, Hansel Gray Hutchins Jr. and wife Patricia of Lexington and Gregory Allen Hutchins and wife Leigh of East Bend; a daughter, Andrea Lynne Soots of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren, Nicole Long and husband Branden, Heather Hutchins, Jason Payne and wife Melissa and Jami Sink and husband Steven; and two great-grandchildren, Greyson Sink and Tyler Long. JACINTO
Romulo C. Jacinto, MD, CMD, 66, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001. Dr. Jacinto was born in Laoag City, Philippines, on May 19, 1934, to Agustin Jacinto and Cristina Cruz. Dr. Jacinto served as captain of the U.S. Army Medical Corps in the Vietname War from 1966 to 1969. He received the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal with two bronze service stars. He received his medical degree in 1962 from Manila Central University, Philippines. He did his medical internship at R. E. Thomason General Hospital in El Paso, Texas, and his residency at Saint Mary's Hospital in Tucson, Ariz. and at Bataan Memorial Hospital in Albuquerque, NM. He finished his fellowship in pulmonary disease at the Methodist Hospital Cardiopulmonary Institute at Southwestern Medical School at the University of Texas. He practiced at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Grand Junction, Colo. and Beckley, W.Va. Since 1975, Dr. Jacinto held his private practice in Winston-Salem, where he practiced internal medicine with a specialization in pulmonary disease and geriatrics. Dr. Jacinto was board certified with the American Board of Internal Medicine. He also received his certificate with added qualifications in geriatric medicine and was a certified medical director. He received the Geriatrics Recognition Award as well as the American Medical Association Physician Recognition Award. He was admitting physician to Forsyth Medical Center for Cross Care, Inc. In addition, he served as the medical director at Pellcare Nursing Home and Britthaven Kernersville Nursing Home. He was also the assistant medical director at the Winston-Salem Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center. He was a member of Saint Leo the Great Catholic Church. He was a beloved husband, father, mentor, colleague, physician and friend. He is survived by his wife, Veronica, and four children, Romel of San Francisco, Kathryn of New York City, Randy of Winston-Salem and Christine of Boston; his brother and wife, Alfred and MaryLou Jacinto of El Paso, Texas, and two sisters, Lucy Baria of California and Mary Dalupang of the Philippines. The family wishes to thank his patients and the entire medical community for their kindness and support for 25 years. The Jacinto family will receive friends and family from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 21, at Vogler & Sons Funeral Home in Clemmons. A military interment service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 22 at National cemetery in Salisbury. JARVIS
Mrs. Louise James Jarvis, 83, died at her home Thursday afternoon. She was born in Guilford County on Oct. 26, 1917, to Edward Luther James and Laura Ziglar James. Most of her life was spent in Winston-Salem, but she had lived in Greensboro in recent years. She was a longtime employee of Bobbitt's Pharmacies and was a member of Northwest Baptist Church in Winston-Salem. She was preceded in death by her husband, C. Nick Jarvis, in 1978; five brothers; and four sisters. Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Lorene J. Holladay of Greensboro and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Monday at Vogler and Sons Reynolda Road Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Randy McKinney. Interment will be in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour before the funeral.
