JONES

Mr. Billy Gene Jones, age 68, of 309 Red Brush Road, Mount Airy, husband of Mrs. Betty Long Phillips Jones, passed away on Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston Salem, Mr. Jones was born in Carroll County, Va., on May 26, 1932, son of Mrs. Ida Easter Jones and the late Mr. Chester Jones. Mr. Jones was a retired banker with Equity One, a veteran of the U. S. Army and member of Temple Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Betty Long Phillips Jones of the home; two stepsons, Randy Phillips of Mount Airy and Tracy Phillips of Cana, Va.; a stepson by a previous marriage, Chuck Phillips of Clemmons; three stepgrandchildren; his mother, Mrs. Ida Easter Jones of Mount Airy; two sisters, Hilda Templeton of Statesville, Sadie Trivette of Winston-Salem; a brother, Buddy Jones of King; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, at Temple Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Teague Groce and the Rev. Jimmy Hensin. Burial will follow in Skyline Memory Gardens. His body will remain at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy until time to be taken to the church to lie in state 30 minutes before the service.

KRUPEL

While raining Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, as if tears were falling from Heaven, our loving mother went home to be with the Lord. Mrs. Ollie Baber Krupel, 77, a resident of Village Care in King died at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Jan. 22, 1923, in Appomattox, Va., to Richard H. and Martha Ann Franklin Baber. Mrs. Krupel was of the Baptist faith. Her husband, Edwin E. '`Edggie" Krupel, preceded her in death. Survivors include six children, Roger D. Krupel and wife Geney, Suzanne Taylor, Janette Kizer, Ricky W. Krupel, Cookie Krupel and Michael S. Krupel and wife Dee all of Winston-Salem; nine grandchildren, Eddie and Lisa Taylor, Tim Krupel, Angela Stark, Rex and Greg Krupel, Kelly Morton and Jason and Joshua Krupel; six great-grandchildren; four sisters, Lugenia Norman, Mary Page and Lucy Jenkins all of Lynchburg, Va., and Juanita Heflin of Fredericksburg, Md.; a brother, Garland Pete Baber of Lynchburg; and two sisters-in-law, Gaynell Hudnall of Forest, Va., and Thelma Baber of Lynchburg. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel, Winston-Salem by the Rev. Darrell Love. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. MICKEY

EASTON, Md. - Paul Fogle Mickey Sr., 86, a longtime Washington lawyer, died at his home in Easton on January 18, 2001, from complications related to Parkinson's Disease. Born Sept. 3, 1914, in Winston-Salem, he was the son of the late Edward T. and Ada Fogle Mickey. He received both his AB and LLB from the University of North Carolina. From 1937 to 1939, he worked as assistant to the attorney general of North Carolina. He came to Washington in 1939 and spent seven years as a special attorney with the tax division in the Department of Justice, interrupted in 1945 by service in the Office of military Government in Berlin. He joined Steptoe & Johnson in 1947 and worked there for 31 years until his retirement in 1978. He served several years as the firm's managing partner and specialized in tax, administrative, and international trade law, and worked during the latter part of his career on cases involving the American watch industry, the building of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline, and the importation of foreign steel. Mr. Mickey was a member of the Metropolitan Club and the Chevy Chase Club, where he served as vice president of the board. In Easton, he was a member of the Chesapeake Bay Yacht Club, the Talbot Country Club, and served on the board of the Historical Society of Talbot County. Mr. Mickey and his wife of 57 years, the former Margaret Stanley, enjoyed hunting, fishing, and boating, and lived for two years in the Outer Banks of North Carolina before moving to Easton to live on the Tred Avon River. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, Margo King-Steiner of Boulder, Colo., Paul F. Mickey Jr. of Washington, D.C. and Frank T. Mickey of Bethesda, Md.; a brother, Joseph H. Mickey of Winston-Salem; a sister, Mary Louise Simon of New York; and five grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at Christ Church, 111 S. Harrison St., Easton, Md., on Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Christ Church General Memorial Fund, or the YMCA of Talbot County, 202 Peachblossom Road, Easton, MD 21601. POPE

Mrs. Eula Chafon Lambeth Everhart Pope, 91, formerly of 204 Moravian St., Wilkesboro died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at The Villages of Wilkes in North Wilkesboro. She was born July 6, 1909, in Winston-Salem to the late Ruth Ann Hartle and Thomas Miller Lambeth. Mrs. Pope married Arther Grady Everhart on Oct. 26, 1925, and lived on South Main Street in Winston-Salem until 1970. Mr. Everhart died in 1972. She later married Ira R. Pope of Winston-Salem in 1975; he died in 1988. She was a lifelong member of Hopewell Moravian Church where she was very active and served in several offices of the church. While in Wilkesboro she attended Wilkesboro Baptist Church; there she was a member of the Solo's and Primetimers. She attended Reynolds High School and was employed at RJR Tobacco Co. for 44 years retiring in 1970. Mrs. Pope was an avid flower gardener and cook. Wherever there was an opportunity or a need she was always willing to use her gifts to care for others. She was also preceded in death by her parents Thomas and Ruth Lambeth and three brothers, Houston Lambeth, Ray Lambeth and Harold Lambeth. Surviving are a daughter, Wilma Lovette and husband Pete of Wilkesboro; a granddaughter, Lynn Sazama and husband Shawn of Southern Pines; a grandson, Mark Lovette and wife Lynn of Lititz, Pa.; great-grandchildren Patrick and Laura Sazama of Southern Pines and John and Charles Lovette of Lititz; 15 nieces and nephews; a sister, Mary Beshears of Winston-Salem; two brothers, Bill Lambeth of Carolina Beach and Don Lambeth of Winston-Salem; stepchildren Charlotte Leach, Bobby Pope, Wilburn Pope, Wayne Pope and Fay Goolsby of Winston-Salem and Terry Pope of Raleigh. Funeral Services will be Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, at 11 a.m. at Hopewell Moravian Church by the Rev. Jeff Carter and the Rev. Jack Nance. Burial will be in the church graveyard. The family will receive friends Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Memorials may be made to Hopewell Moravian Church, 701 Hopewell Church Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27127.

SCALES

SANDY RIDGE - Dollie Oakley Scales, 72, of 1694 Phillips Road died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. Her funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, at Delta United Methodist Church in Sandy Ridge. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mrs. Scales was born March 2, 1928, to the late Jetter Troy Oakley and Medley Wilkins Oakley of Stokes County. She was a member of Delta United Methodist Church and was retired from R.J. Reynolds Industries. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Charlie Scales of the home; a daughter, Norma Scales Helms of Matthews; granddaughter Melissa Helms; grandson Christopher Helms of Matthews; sister Melba O. Gann and husband Danny of Madison; and brother William Louis Oakley and wife Mary Evelyn of Lewisville. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, at Ray Funeral Home in Madison and all other times at her residence. Memorials may be made to the Kate B. SIMMONS

KERNERSVILLE - Mrs. Daisy Holt Simmons, 95, went to be with the Lord Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001. She was born Dec. 28, 1905, in Stokes County to Ed and Betty Holt. She was a member of the Kernersville Friends Meeting and was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Simmons. Surviving are three daughters, Dorothy Norman, Betty Joyce, and Peggy and husband Roger Parrish, all of Kernersville; 11 grandchildren, Donnie Norman (Wanda), Jimmy Norman (Delores), Clement Norman (Linda), Judy Whicker (Joe), Shannon Cramer (Steve), Sue Idol (Jimmy), Pat Tilley (Mike), Wendy Jones (Greg), Kim Whicker (Alan), Diane Williams (Don) and Debbie Lane; 19 great-grandchildren; a stepgreat-grandchild; 12 great-great-grandchildren; and her neighbors and friends she loved very much. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at the Kernersville Friends Meeting by the Rev. Paul Williamson and the Rev. Myron Leonhard. Burial will follow in the Eastlawn Gardens of Memory. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Hayworth-Miller-Cain Funeral Home. Mrs. Simmons will be remembered for her beautiful flowers and quilts. STONE

Mrs. Louise Ferraiolo Stone, 54, of Weisner Court died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at her home. She was born July 7, 1946, in New Haven, Conn. to Salvatore and Virginia Matheson Ferraiolo. She worked with Piedmont News Co. for a number of years and was a member of Christ Moravian Church and the A.R. Carr Sunday school class. Mrs. Stone is survived by her husband, Roger Lee Stone of the home; a daughter, Tracy Stone Egebrecht of Winston-Salem; son, Douglas Lee Stone of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, Adam Stone Egebrecht and Nicholas Ryan Egebrecht; three brothers, Joe Ferraiolo and wife Mary of Winston-Salem, John S. Ferraiolo of Winston-Salem and David Ferraiolo and wife Sonia of Lexington; several nieces and nephews; a special sister-in-law, Debbie Stone Bargoil; and a cherished friend, Melba Carpenter. Funeral Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller Chapel by Pastor Randy Vogler. Burial will be in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel and following the service at the home of Tracy Stone Egebrecht. THARPE

Billy Tharpe, 67, of June Lane in Winston-Salem, died Friday, Jan. 19 at his home after five years of declining health. Mr. Tharpe was born in Wilkes County on Nov. 1, 1933 to Paul and Maude Waddell Tharpe. He was a process engineer for R.J.R. Archer before his retirement. He also served in the Air Force. Survivors include his wife, Doris Alexander Tharpe; daughters, Devae Tharpe Hanks and husband Stephen of Clemmons; and Beth Tharpe Baucom and husband John Charles of Lexington; grandchild Farrin Long of Clemmons; brothers Harry Tharpe and wife Hazel of Roaring River; Kermit Tharpe and wife Shirley of Clemmons; and Barry Tharpe and wife Brenda of Roaring River; sister Eloise Tharpe Lowery and husband Robert of Arlington. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Unity Baptist Church, where he was a member. The Rev. Nathan Parrish will conduct the service. The family will receive friends in the church hall following the service. There will be a graveside service at 3 p.m Monday at the Garden of Reflection Mausoleum at Mountlawn Memorial Park at 500 Sparta Road in North Wilkesboro. Memorials can be made to the Unity Baptist Church Building Fund, 145 Fishel Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27107.

WALL

Deida '`Dee" Elizabeth Wall, 92, formerly of Townley St., Hanes, died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Sept. 20, 1908, in Davie County to John C. and Alice Owens Wall. She was a member of Hanes Baptist Church and was retired from P.H. Hanes Knitting Co. She is survived by two grandsons, Michael Wall and John Wall of Advance and two great-grandchildren, Matt Wall of Mooresville and Mandy Wall of Advance. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Westlawn Gardens of Memory by the Rev. Robert Whitaker. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.

WILLIAMS

Mrs. Charlotte Hauser Williams of Winston-Salem died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born in Winston-Salem to Buford A. and Blanche Boner Hauser. She was an active member of First Baptist Church for 65 years, where she was a past president of the W.M.U. and worked in the children's department. Surviving are her loving husband of 55 years, Paul D. Williams of the home; a daughter, Janet Williams of Winston-Salem; a son, Dean Williams and wife Sue of Greensboro; three grandchildren, Kevin, Karen and Katie; and a brother, Worth T. Hauser of Florida. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Vogler's Reynolda Road Chapel by the Rev. Henry Stokes. Burial will follow in Union Hill Baptist Church cemetery in Clemmons. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Capital Fund, 501 Fifth St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101.

CLY

Mrs. Avis Elizabeth Clary Cly, of the Brookridge Retirement Community, 1099 Hayes Forest Drive, died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001 at her home. Mrs. Cly was born Dec. 16, 1911, to Martha Almedia Martin and Pearl Pinkney Clary in Jonesville. She grew up in Elkin where she attended public schools. She came to Winston-Salem as a young teenager and attended Business College. She worked in several business offices in town and later became the cashier in the coffee shop near the Greyhound bus terminal where she would meet her future husband, Perry Stokes Cly. She was an active member of Home Moravian Church Womens’ Fellowship, Matilda Ward Class, Senior Friends, Mission Band Society, a Diener and prepared meals in the church kitchen throughout the years and always for the band members and ushers at the Easter Sunrise service. She volunteered at the American Red Cross blood bank and enrolled in the Red Cross home-nursing course. She was an excellent bridge player. She later worked at the Salem College bookstore. After Mr. Cly’s retirement from the Greyhound Corporation as regional supervisor with 35 years of service, they enjoyed their mountain retreat at Chalet High in Fancy Gap, Va. Her daughter, Elizabeth Cly King (Wayne) preceded her in death in Charlotte on Dec. 18,1988. Survivors include two daughters and three sons-in-law; Mrs. Jean Cly Townsend (Jim), of Midland, Mich., Mrs. Martha Cly Shaffner (Don), of Winston-Salem, two grandchildren; David Wayne King, of Cary, and Frank Cly Shaffner, of Winston-Salem, and one sister-in law, Margaret Clary Locke, of Boerne, Texas. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, at the Home Moravian Church with burial to follow at God’s Acre. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, at Vogler’s Reynolda Chapel. The family wishes to thank Dr. Lee Rocamora and the staff at Brookridge Retirement Community for their excellent care.

COALSON

MT. AIRY — Mr. Franklin Delano Coalson, 68, of 177 Lynn Road, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro. He was born in Surry County on Nov. 11, 1932, to Hugh and Susie Craddock Coalson. Mr. Coalson retired from McLean Trucking Co. in 1986. In recent years he was a Community Service Counselor at Skyline Memorial Park in Mt. Airy. He had attended Gospel Light Baptist Church in Winston-Salem and Faith Baptist Church in Mt. Airy. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Harvey Ray Coalson in November, 2000. Surviving are his wife, Carol Payne Coalson, of the home, one son, Tarron Coalson, and his wife, Micele, of Winston-Salem, two daughters; Melissa Coalson, of High Point, and Brigette Shelton and her husband, Larry, of Madison, eleven grandchildren, and one great-grandchild, one brother, Allen Coalson, of Walkertown, two sisters; Frances Queen, of Walkertown, and Jean Ulrich, of Laurel Hill, Florida. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday in the Mausoleum at Skyline Memorial Park at which time a graveside service will be held in the cemetery. The Rev. Frank Shumate will conduct the service. Vogler Reynolda Road Chapel has served the family in Winston-Salem and Skyline Memorial Park in Mt. Airy.

FOSTER

KERNERSVILLE — Mrs. Clara Mae Foster, 89, of Britthaven, of Kernersville, died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was living with her nephew, L.W. Frederick, of Kernersville. She was a retired nurse and was loved by everyone who knew her. She helped her niece Marilyn, with her petting zoo. She is preceded in death by one son, Bobby Foster. She is survived by one brother, Woody Frederick, of Tennessee, and two sisters; Freddie Zillich, of Michigan, and Sarah Barber, of Kentucky. Funeral arrangements are incomplete in Hackleburg, Ala. The family wishes to thank the staff of Britthaven of Kernersville for all of their care and compassion.

GORDON

Woodrow Scales Gordon, 84, the husband of Edna Lentz Doub Gordon, died unexpectedly Friday, Jan. 19, 2001 at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Gordon was born Nov. 20, 1916, to Scales H. Gordon and Eva Norman Gordon in Surry County. He lived for many years in Stanleyville and moved to Winston-Salem in 1983. He was first married to the late Ruby Caudle Gordon, who died in 1981. Mr. Gordon was employed by the R.J. Reynolds Corp. for 35 years. For 15 years, he worked as a volunteer at Forsyth Medical Center. He was an active member of Christ Lutheran Church. Eleven siblings preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife, Edna Lentz Doub Gordon; a son, Phillip Woodrow Gordon and his wife, Wynn Potts Gordon; and two granddaughters, Lesley Gordon and Michelle Gordon of East Bend. He was preceded in death by a son, William Scales Gordon, who died in 1990. He is also survived by a stepson, Marvin Clay Doub and his wife Janet Thomas Doub of Winston-Salem; two stepdaughters, Melanie Doub Ahr and husband Sean and Christina Doub Burton and husband Jeff; and three stepgranchildren, Andrew and Sarah Ahr and Nathaniel Burton. The family will receive friends at Hayworth Miller Silas Creek Funeral Chapel on Jan. 21 from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services conducted by the Rev. Pierson Shaw and the Rev. J.T. Byerly will be held at Hayworth Miller Funeral Chapel at 11 a.m. Jan. 22. Burial will follow at Parklawn Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to Christ Lutheran Church, 3205 S. Main Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27127.

HANELINE

MOCKSVILLE — Mrs. Ethel Poplin Haneline, 93, of West Maple Avenue, died early yesterday morning at Somerset Place in Mocksville. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Union Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery with the Rev. Calvin Anderson officiating. The family is receiving friends and family at Eaton Funeral Home on Tuesday from 1 p.m. until the time of the service. They request memorials be directed to the Mocksville Pentecostal Holiness Church, 229 Milling Road, Mocksville, N.C. 27028. Mrs. Haneline was born in Guilford County, April 6, 1907 to the late Thomas and Lizzie White Poplin and was a homemaker. She was a charter member of the Mocksville Pentecostal Holiness Church. Mrs. Haneline especially enjoyed out of doors work and flower gardening. Her husband Harrison Haneline died in 1975. She was also preceded in death by two stepsons, Kenneth and Robert Haneline; a son, Harold Poplin, five brothers and a sister. Surviving are three stepdaughters, Clara Eggleston and Louise Haneline of Lexington, and Evelyn Jarrett of Thomasville; a stepson, Bill Haneline of Wyoming, Del.; a grandson, David Poplin and wife, Candy, of Mocksville; a great-granddaughter, Lauren Poplin; and a great-grandson, Dave Poplin, several step grandchildren and step greatgrandchildren; a sister, Frances Cromer of Winston-Salem, and a daughter-in-law, Deedy Poplin of Mocksville.
