NANCE

LEXINGTON — Carl R. Nance, 90, of Lexington, died Saturday. He is survived by a daughter, Mary Lou N. Haynes of Winston-Salem. His funeral will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the First Reformed United Church of Christ. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. in the church parlor.

SEGRAVES

Mr. John Franklin Segraves, 78, of Winston-Salem died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, at 10:43 a.m. He was born Jan. 6, 1923, in Forsyth County to Benjamin F. and Flora Culler Segraves. He was a lifelong member of Bethabara Moravian Church, attended Old Town High School and the University of N.C. at Chapel Hill. Mr. Segraves was an electrician and electrical contractor. He was a World War II veteran. For 50 years he was a member of Winston Lodge No. 167, a 54-year member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and a 50-year member of the National Electrical Contractors of America. Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Edith Grubbs Segraves; a son, Steve Franklin Segraves; a daughter, Linda Segraves Miller and her husband Ernest; six grandchildren, Brian and Tammy Davis, Troy and Jennifer Davis Howard and Stephanie and Kayla Segraves; three great-grandsons, Jordan Tyler and Hunter Gray Howard and Johnathan Hayes Davis; a sister, Clara Sharp; and a brother, David Segraves. Lovingly remembered is grandson, Seth Franklin Segraves, who died at age nine. Also preceding him in death were his parents; a brother; and four sisters. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23 at Vogler and Sons Reynolda Road Chapel. Following a private family service, a public graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Forsyth Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Hospice Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

SIMMONS

WESTFIELD — Mr. Reid Hickman Simmons, 97, of 1435 Simmons Road passed away Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, at his home. He was born Oct. 16, 1903, in Stokes County to James William and Annie Nunn Simmons. Mr. Simmons was a retired farmer and a member of Faith Baptist Church. Surviving are a daughter, Helen Vaden of Westfield; four sons and daughters-in-law, Gilmer and Grace Simmons and Johnnie and Inez Simmons of Westfield, Jimmy and Linda Simmons and Hickmon and Judy Simmons of Pilot Mountain; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Ella Ball of Westfield, Ethel Carter of Greensboro and Verta Simmons of Walnut Cove. Mr. Simmons was preceded in death by his wife, Hallie Mae Durham Simmons; a daughter, Jacqueline Boaz; and a grandson, Greg Simmons. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, at Brown Mountain Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Richard Jones, the Rev. Darrell Price and the Rev. Rick Sewell. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Cox-Needham Funeral Home in Pilot Mountain from 7 to 9 Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, and other times at Mr. Simmons’ home on Simmons Road, Westfield. The Simmons family is being served by Cox-Needham Funeral Home in Pilot Mountain.

STEELMAN

Mrs. Martha Elizabeth Steelman, 83, of Winston-Salem, passed away Monday, Jan. 22, 2001. She was born to the late Walter Clark Slack and Lou Della Parks Slack Oct. 11, 1917, in Star. She was married to Charles Dayton Steelman. He preceded in her death in 1975. Three brothers and three sisters also preceded her in death. She enjoyed traveling and was known for her positive attitude and always having a smile. Mrs. Steelman loved caring for others, especially her family and grandchildren. Three sons, Steve Steelman and his wife, Helen of Winston-Salem, Jack Steelman and his wife, Jo of Pfafftown and Larry Steelman and his wife, Elizabeth of Dunwoody, Ga.; two daughters, Jo Ann Nelson and her husband, Arthur of Richmond, Va. and Nancy Fogler of Hackensack, N.J. ; 11 grandchildren; Mitch Steelman, Beth Steelman, Dayton Steelman, Taylor Steelman, Charlotte Steelman, Patrick Steelman, Kim Sheller and her husband, Joe, David Eddy, Brad Nelson, Ashley Overbeck and her husband, Charles and Cameron Fogle and his wife, Lynn and a great-grandchild, Anna Sheller survive her. Numerous nieces, nephews, friends and other relatives also survive her. Funeral services will be held at 3:30p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, at the Fries Memorial Moravian Church. The Rev. Stuart Zimmerman will officiate. Interment will follow at God’s Acre. Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Vogler’s Main Street Chapel. Memorials may be made to Fries Memorial Moravian Church, 251 N. Hawthorne Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27104.

THOMAS

Mrs. Beulah Lucylle Jarvis Thomas, wife of Hughey Edmund Thomas for 62 years, sure of her salvation, went to meet her Lord Monday, Jan. 22, 2001. She was born to Amos E. and Sudie Zimmerman Jarvis Oct. 25, 1912. She lived all of her life in Winston-Salem and was a graduate of Marshall School of Beauty Culture. She owned and operated her own beauty shop for many years. Mrs. Thomas was a lifelong member of Salem Baptist Church. She was teacher and superintendent of primary age children for many years. She also belonged to Ardmore Baptist Senior Citizen Club and was a member of the senior adult choir there. She was preceded in death by a beloved and devoted daughter, Mrs. Bill (Deanna Sue) Hunter; a much loved son, Richard Jarvis Thomas; two brothers, Elcye J. Jarvis and Herbert Jarvis; and a baby sister, Viola Ellen Jarvis. Surviving are her husband, Hughey Thomas; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Richard (Janice) Plemmons Thomas; three wonderful grandchildren, Christy Jackson and husband Mark, Cheryl Susann Thomas and Michael Clayton '`Clay’‘ Thomas; and four sisters, Mrs. Fred (Mozelle '`Dell’‘) Johnson, Thelma and Bill Hammons, Mrs. Staple (Helen) Mendenhall and Hallie and Edgar Redmond. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. Howard Welborn and the Rev. Floyd Boles officiating. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Salem Baptist Church, 429 S. Broad St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101 or Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103 where marvelous, considerate and compassionate people cared for her in her last illness.

TOTTEN

The Rev. John William Totten died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001. He is preceded in death by his infant daughter Annie Huliet Totten; his parents, David O. and Kate Reece Totten; his brother, Lt. David Reece Totten; and his sister, Kathryn Totten Vargo. He was born in Elkin, N.C. on Dec. 8, 1925. Survivors include his wife, Frances Allen Totten; his daughter, Missy Totten Craddock, and her husband, Curtis Dale Craddock of King; his son, John William Totten II of Charlotte; and his beloved grandson, William McNeill Totten of Winston-Salem. Also surviving are his niece Katy Vargo Garman and her family of Charlotte. The Rev. Totten served as associate minister of Knollwood Baptist Church from October 1968 until his retirement in December 1990. Additional ministries for the Rev. Totten included St. John’s Baptist Church in Charlotte as well as churches in White Plains, N.Y. and Lexington, Ky. He was a graduate of Baylor University and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He also completed doctoral studies at The Teachers College of Columbia University. He was a United States Navy veteran of World War II. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, Jan. 23 at 11 a.m. at Knollwood Baptist Church in Winston-Salem. Burial will follow immediately in the Knollwood Memorial Garden. The family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall at Knollwood Baptist Church today from 7 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to the scholarship fund of Knollwood Baptist Church Through the Week School, of which he was founder. WILLARD

On Jan. 20, 2001, Richard C. Willard III '`Rick’‘ left his life here on earth to find peace at last. He was a loved son, brother, uncle and friend. Rick loved Wake Forest sports, Dale Earnhardt and working on automobiles. He worked for Brown Pest Control, but had recently been sidelined with a back injury. He will be missed greatly by his mom, Sonja '`Sunny’‘ Willard of the home; a sister, Anita Clifton and her husband Ronnie of Rural Hall; a sister, Michelle Snider and her husband Larry of Winston-Salem. He was the uncle to Angie Baker and friend to her husband Tim of Rural Hall and uncle to Michael Clifton of Appalachian State University and to Zach, Megan and Austin Snider, all of Winston-Salem. His nieces and nephews all loved their Uncle Ricky very much. He also was the great-uncle to Angie’s two beautiful children, Dillon Clifton and Taylor Baker. He had a host of friends who will all miss him as well. Both his family and friends know that Rick has finally found the peace he has been searching for since the death of his beloved father, Richard Willard Jr. in 1986. The Lord has opened his arms and welcomed Rick home and we his family are thankful that his pain is gone forever. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the building fund at New Hope United Methodist Church, 5125 Shattalon Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27106. This church had offered Rick its prayers through some of his toughest times. A graveside service will be 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, at Parklawn Memorial Gardens on Peters Creek Parkway, Winston-Salem. During this difficult time, the family will be receiving friends at the home of Rick’s sister Michelle at 5074 Shattalon Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27106.

WILSON

MOCKSVILLE — Mr. Johnny Moyer Wilson, 70, of Hope Lane passed away Monday, Jan. 21, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mr. Wilson was born Sept. 6, 1930, in Surry County to the late Samuel and Lilly White Wilson. He was preceded in death by his wife, Agnes Slayton Wilson, on July 3, 1989. Mr. Wilson was of the Baptist faith and a former employee of Kernersville Lumber Co. where he was a machine operator. He is survived by three sons, Garry Wilson and wife Beth of Mocksville, Joseph Wilson and wife Belinda of Winston-Salem and Curtis Wilson and wife Marie of East Bend; two daughters, Bonnie Wilson of Mocksville and Sheila Mays and husband Brian of Stokesdale; and three brothers, Paul Wilson of Kernersville, Richard Wilson of Winston-Salem and G.S. Wilson of Florida. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, at Davie Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Steve Hedgecock officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Gur cemetery in Kernersville. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Rock Spring Baptist Church cemetery Fund, 913 Powell Bridge Road, Harmony, NC 28634. Davie Funeral Service, LLC, 416 Valley Road, Mocksville will be serving the Wilson family.

WRIGHT

Mrs. Westell Willis Beasley Wright, formerly of 1520 E. 14 St., was born on June 26, 1911, to the late Preston and Lillie Penn Willis in Winston-Salem. She was a lifelong resident of Winston-Salem, where she attended the local public schools. Mrs. Wright was a member of Saints Home United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She was preceded in death by her spouses, Willie Onis Beasley and William Tennyson Wright. She departed this life Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at the Winston-Salem Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center following a period illness. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, at Saints Home United Methodist Church with the Rev. John Epps, Pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the church. Mrs. Wright is survived by a sister, Mrs. Helen W. Alexander of Winston-Salem; a devoted niece and great-nephew, Mary Catherine Willis of Winston-Salem and Walter Lee (Louise) Willis of San Antonio, Texas; six nephews, Elmer Cheeks Jr., Alphonso (Dorothy) Willis, Odell G. (Betty) King Jr., Charles (Tressie) Springs Sr. and Willie Leroy (Maxine) Beasley all of Winston-Salem and Theodore (Dorothy) Beasley of Ogden, Utah; two nieces, Grace R. Allison, Long Island, N.Y., and Willie G. Wright and a great-nephew, Elton (Cheryl Renee) Wright of Lafayette, La.; a devoted cousin, James Willie Penn of Winston-Salem; a special nurse, Cynthia Bennett of Winston-Salem Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center; and a host of other relatives and friends .

YORK

MOCKSVILLE — Miss Rosalie York, 60, of Bethel Church Road died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, at her residence. She was born Feb. 18, 1940, in Iredell County to Colin James and Ruby Barnette York. She was employed at Rowan Vocational Workshop and was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church. Survivors in addition to her parents are a sister, Shirley Ann York of Winston-Salem; a brother, Dennis James (Cathy) York of Mocksville; two nieces, Dena (Kenneth) Shoffner and Lori York of Mocksville; two great-nephews, Keenan and Bryson Shoffner; and a great-niece, Kaylee Ann Shoffner. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bethel United Methodist Church with Dr. S.B. Warner, the Rev. Pam Strader and the Rev. Jack Luther officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Eaton Funeral Service is serving the York family.

BENNETT

Mrs. Billye Taylor McMahon Bennett of Winston-Salem, the widow of the late Alfred Edward Bennett of Bristol, England, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 23, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. Mrs. Bennett was born Dec. 15, 1908, in Greenville, S.C., to Nora Nedalia Case and William Taylor McMahon. She graduated from Charlotte Center High School and Davenport College, Lenoir. She studied voice in North Carolina and New York and performed professionally on stage. Mrs. Bennett was a member of St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church, the Huguenot Society and the Daughters of the American Revolution. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Jane Long Craven, and a son, Albert Benjamin Long Jr., of Winston-Salem. Also surviving are six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Private interment services will be held in Greenville, S.C. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to do so may make contributions to Hospice Palliative CareCenter or a charity of their choice.

BLACKWOOD

MOCKSVILLE — Mrs. Ruby Sedberry Blackwood, 85, of Junction Road died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, at her residence. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Rowan Memorial Park in Salisbury. The family will be at Eaton Funeral Home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday. They request that memorials be considered for Hospice of Davie County, P.O. Box 848, Mocksville, NC 27028. Mrs. Blackwood was born May 18, 1915, in Davie County to the late Eugene Kenneth and Ida Brogdon Sedberry. She was retired from Burlington Industries of Cooleemee, Davie County Hospital, and was a member of Cooleemee United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Blackwood, in 1969. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Loraine Blackwood of Mocksville with whom she had made her home for the past several years; three grandchildren, Lisa B. Salvaggio of Charlotte, David K. Blackwood of Cary, and Lorri Blackwood of Winston-Salem; three great-grandchildren, Tara E. Potts, Brett Blackwood and Briana Blackwood; and a sister, Mildred S. Stallings of Rutherfordton.

BOTTOMS

PINNACLE — Mrs. Eva Emerson Bottoms, 85, of 3189 Volunteer Road passed away Tuesday evening, Jan. 23, 2001, at her daughter and son-in-law’s home. She was born Sept. 30, 1915, in Ararat, Va., to William Henry and Emma Scott Bishop. Mrs. Bottoms was a beautician and a member of Friendly Chapel Church. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Doug Jessup of Pinnacle; a son and daughter-in-law, Ken and Edna Emerson of Hudson, Fla.; a stepdaughter and stepson-in-law, Ruby and Lonnie Dunman of Pilot Mountain; a stepson and stepdaughter-in-law, R.B. and Barbara Bottoms of Pilot Mountain; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren; stepgrandchildren; and stepgreat-grand children; three sisters, Evelyn Carter of Mount Airy, Sylvia Ogles of Granite Falls and Ethel York of Thomasville; and a brother, Arthur Bishop of Mount Airy. Mrs. Bottoms was preceded in death by two husbands, Herman Emerson and Roy Bottoms; a daughter, Janie Holt; two sisters; and four brothers. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday morning, Jan. 26, 2001, at Cox-Needham Funeral Home and Chapel, conducted by Brother Don Collins, the Rev. Milton Sewell and the Rev. Robbie Stephens. Interment will follow in the Friendly Chapel Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Stokes County, P.O. Box 10, Danbury, NC 27016. The Bottoms family is being served by Cox-Needham Funeral Home in Pilot Mountain.

BURNS

Mrs. Elizabeth Sain McDaniel Burns, known to family and friends as '`Lib’‘ died at the age of 83 in the family home Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, following a brief illness. Mrs. Burns was born in Mocksville June 6, 1917. Her parents were John Lee McDaniel and Mattie Estelle Sain McDaniel. Mrs. Burns lived most of her life in Winston-Salem, graduated from R.J. Reynolds High School and was member of Burkhead United Methodist Church. In addition to her role as a lifelong mother and homemaker, Mrs. Burns served as the personal secretary to the district superintendent of the Northeast District United Methodist Churches from 1956 to 1976. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas J. Burns and her sisters, Martha McDaniel Fansler and Ella Mae McDaniel Hedrick. She is survived by a son, Thomas J. Burns Jr., a resident of Washington, D.C., as well as a number of cousins, nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Vogler & Sons Funeral Home on Reynolda Road. Funeral services will be conducted at the chapel in the funeral home Friday morning at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Kathie C. Sherrill and the Rev. Kenneth G. Fansler officiating. Interment will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Hospice Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103 or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
