PARRIMAN

Mr. Charles Edward Parriman Sr., 56, of Winston-Salem, formerly of 1350 Derry St. passed from labor to reward Jan. 21, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born Dec. 26, 1944, in Winston-Salem to the late Ben Parriman and the late McClester J. Cannon. He was reinstated as a member of Antioch Christian Church and served on the mass choir until his illness. He was employed by USA Staffing (Safeco Insurance Co.) until his work injury. Surviving his passing are a son, Charles E. Parriman Jr.; a daughter, Vicki Renee Parriman; a daughter-in-law, Elizabeth; two brothers, Cole B. Cannon of Sunnyvale, Calif., and Willie J. Cannon of Winston-Salem; two sisters-in-law, Bobbie Cannon of Calif. and Catherine Cannon of North Carolina; three grandchildren; four nieces; an aunt, Bernetta Perryman; and a cousin, James Perryman. Family visitation will be 30 minutes immediately following the funeral services, which will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, at Antioch Christian Church, with the Rev. James A. Gilliam officiating. Beasley’s Funeral Home is in charge of all services and arrangements.

SAPP

LEXINGTON — Mrs. Mabel Carpenter Sapp, 75, a loving and devoted mother and sister, died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Oct. 18, 1925, in Wise County, Va. to Herman and Una Bledsoe Carpenter. Mrs. Sapp was a longtime member of Immanuel Baptist Church and retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. after 27 years of service. Surviving are two sons, Larry Wayne Sapp Sr. (Bonnie) of East Bend and Donald Sapp Sr. (Sue) of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Laura Elizabeth Coleman of Southmont and Arlene Carpenter Combs (Reggie) of Irmo, S.C.; four grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three step great-grandchildren; three nieces; three nephews; and a devoted friend, Lela Wilkerson. Funeral services will be 12:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. Otis Clampitt officiating. Burial will follow in Immanuel Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

SIDDEN

STATE ROAD — Mrs. Mattie Nixon Sidden, 82, of Zephyr Mountain Park Road, passed away Wednesday Jan. 24, 2001, at Hugh Chatham Nursing Center. Mrs. Sidden was born April 14, 1918, in Surry County to Cora Roberts and Curtis Nathaniel Nixon. Mrs. Sidden was retired from Chatham and a member of Union Hill Missionary Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Sidden; four brothers, Mack, Charlie, Reid and Dan Nixon, and a sister, Erma Isaacs. Survivors include a son, David Sidden of Mocksville; a daughter, Brenda Sidden Golden of State Road; a close friend of the family, James Hudson; four grand-children, Greg, Nathan and Andrea Sidden and Amy Golden; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday Jan. 26, 2001, at Hodges Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Flake Mason and the Rev. Tim Mason. Burial will follow at Mountain Park cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin.

STOPHEL

Mr. George David Stophel, 76, of 4316 Bethania Station Road died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mr. Stophel was born Dec. 3, 1924, in Bristol, Tenn., to the late Mack Roy and Mary Myrtle Vance Stophel. He spent most of his life in Winston-Salem and was a member of Pfafftown Christian Church where he was a former elder and caretaker. Mr. Stophel was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Army stationed in North Africa and Italy, and was a recipient of a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star. He was a member and past master of the Forsyth Masonic Lodge No. 707. He was also a member of OES Chapter 355 and served as a warder. He worked for Krispy Kreme as a salesman, retiring with 23˝ years of service. After retirement, he drove a school bus for the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school system for 13 years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Lucille Bowen; a brother, Mack J. Stophel; and a brother-in-law, Robert Ritchie. Mr. Stophel is survived by his wife, Edna Cline Stophel of the home; three sons, Tony, Wayne and Michael Stophel; three sisters, Mary Alice Hagy and husband Dudley of Bristol, Tenn., Nancy Langford and husband Coy of Huntsville, Ala., and Kate Ritchie of Fond-du-Lac, Wis.; a sister-in-law, Betty Stophel of Winston-Salem; a brother-in-law, Jack Bowen of Baltimore, Md.; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Pfafftown Christian Church, with Dr. Tom Everton and the Rev. Richard Cline officiating. Burial will be in the Pfafftown cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 4-A Oak Branch Drive, Greensboro NC 27405, or Pfafftown Christian Church Choir Fund, 3323 Transou Road, Pfafftown, NC 27040.

WALL

RURAL HALL — Mrs. Oneda B. Wall, 68, died at Forsyth Medical Center on Tuesday Jan. 23, 2001, following a period of declining health. A native of Stokes County, she was born on May 26, 1932, to the late Colonel '`C.B’‘ and Zenobia Simmons Boyles. Mrs. Wall was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith. She loved to play bingo with her friends at White Lake. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, sister and friend. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Wall was preceded in death by four sisters and three brothers. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Billy Raye Wall of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Debbie Bryan and husband Jeff of Germanton; two sons, Steve Wall and wife Janet and Stan Wall of Rural Hall; four grandchildren, Amber and Ashleigh Bryan and Brandon and Michael Wall; two sisters, Georgia '`Shortie’‘ Hall and husband Rupert and Beulah '`Boots’‘ Boles all of King; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Thursday evening at Mount Olive Baptist Church on Highway 66 N. in Stokes County. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at the church, with the Rev. Paul Dean and the Rev. Randy Roberts officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to Mount Olive Baptist Church, Highway 66 N., King, NC 27021.

BLAIR

Mrs. Margaret Blair of Salemtowne, formerly of Woodlore Trail, died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001. She was born April 1, 1923, in Rochester, N.Y., to John and Regina Christman. She was married to the late James Thomas Blair of Albemarle. In 1942. She graduated from Nazareth Academy in Rochester and received a full writing scholarship to Emory University. Mrs. Blair worked as an editor for Western Electric, was a graduate of the Institute of Children’s Literature and was active in the Little Theatre. She was also an avid sculptor and writer. She performed narrations and recruited child talent for a children’s radio program on North Carolina history. Mrs. Blair was an active member of St. Leo’s Catholic Church and sang in the choir. Surviving are her children, Tom Blair and his wife Ellen of Winston-Salem, Jean Blair and her husband Bob Christianson of New York City and Grant Blair and his wife Susan of Winston-Salem; six grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and three sisters. A prayer service and visitation will be held at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel on Friday from 7 to 8 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Leo’s Catholic Church with Father Herbert Burke officiating. Interment will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Leo’s Catholic Church, 335 Springdale Ave., Winston-Salem, NC 27104.

BURCHETTE

RONDA — Paul Joseph Burchette, 53, of 1349 Little Elkin Church Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, at Greenville Memorial Hospital in Greenville, S. C. Funeral service will be conducted Saturday at 11 a.m. at Maple Springs Baptist Church by the Rev. Larry Macemore. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 10:30. Mr. Burchette was born in Surry County June 26, 1947, to Glenn and Maggie Kimmer Burchette. He was retired from R.J. Reynolds and attended Maple Springs Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his father, Glenn Burchette in 1999. Surviving are his wife. Irena Burchette; two sons, Paul ( Sherry) Burchette and Bryan (Susan) Burchette of Ronda; his mother, Mrs. Maggie Burchette of Elkin; two grandsons, Paul Joseph Burchette III and Austin Ryan Burchette; two sisters, Edith (Dewitt) Osborne of Elkin and Glenda (Jimmy) Carter of East Bend; and three brothers, Jim (Lib) Burchette of Greensboro, Hugh (Lib) Burchette of Elkin and Granville (Chris) Burchette of Ronda. The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Kennedy Funeral Home in Elkin.

BURNS

Mrs. Elizabeth Sain McDaniel Burns, known to family and friends as '`Lib,’‘ died at the age of 83 in the family home Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, after a brief illness. Mrs. Burns was born in Mocksville on June 6, 1917. Her parents were John Lee McDaniel and Mattie Estelle Sain McDaniel. Mrs. Burns lived most of her life in Winston-Salem. She graduated from R.J. Reynolds High School and was a member of Burkhead United Methodist Church. In addition to her role as a lifelong mother and homemaker, Mrs. Burns served as the personal secretary to the district superintendent of the Northeast District United Methodist Churches from 1956 to 1976. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas J. Burns, and her sisters, Martha McDaniel Fansler and Ella Mae McDaniel Hedrick. She is survived by a son, Thomas Jordan Burns Jr., a resident of Washington, D.C., as well as a number of cousins, nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at Vogler & Sons Funeral Home on Reynolda Road on Friday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Kathie C. Sherrill and the Rev. Kenneth G. Fansler officiating. Interment will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Hospice Palliative Care Center, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103, or to the charity of the donor’s choice.

CARSON

Mr. R.D. Carson, 85, of Winston-Salem passed away Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born Feb. 15, 1915, in Alexander County to Ina Mae Brown and Mack Little Carson. Mr. Carson was a member of Northwoods Baptist Church and had retired from Pilot Freight. He was a member of Teamsters Local Retiree Club 391 and a life member of D.A.V. Mr. Carson was a U.S. Army World War II veteran of the Asia/Pacific Campaign, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, a member of the 27th Infantry Division and was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge and the Bronze Star. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nell McGuire Carson, in 1999, and his son, John L. Carson, in 1972. Surviving are a son, Danehy A. Carson of Winston-Salem; sisters-in-law Nancy Bodenheimer (husband Wes) and Bessie Bowles of Winston-Salem; three brothers-in-law, J.D. McGuire and Joe McGuire of Lenoir, and Mr. Flay McGuire (wife Ruth) of Winston-Salem; special family friend Frances Elder of Winston-Salem; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. Henry Cook officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory, Walkertown. The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to Ginger and Tammy Bodenheimer for their many kindnesses shown during their uncle’s illness.

GILLEY

Mr. William H. Gilley of Brighton Gardens, Winston-Salem, went to his rest Jan. 24, 2001, at the age of 87. Mr. Gilley was born March 1, 1913, in Virginia to Mary and William Houston Gilley. Mr. Gilley was formerly the sole owner and operator of Gilley Fuel Oil Co. in Winston-Salem for 40 years, serving the Forsyth City/County schools, Wake Forest University, the Winston-Salem downtown area as well as Winston-Salem residential. He was also involved in real estate and investments with Bartram Investment Properties. Surviving William H. Gilley are his wife, Delsie Brinkley Gilley of Winston-Salem; his son, James R. Gilley and wife Sylvia Gilley of Dallas, Texas; his daughter, Linda Gilley Cox of Winston-Salem; his grandchildren, Michael Gilley and wife Donna Gilley of Winston-Salem, Beth Gilley of Dallas, Texas, Mrs. Nita Ann Dry and husband Todd Dry of Singer Island, Fla., Mrs. Michelle Winifred Larking and husband Ken Larking of Hickory, Mrs. Elizabeth Anne Daum and husband Shiloh Daum of Chapel Hill, and Trent W. Cox of Raleigh; five great-grandchildren, Caroline Gilley of Dallas, Texas, Brandon Dry and Chandler Dry of Singer Island, Fla., and Gray Gilley and Mackenzie Gilley of Winston-Salem; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Gilley was a long-standing, active member of Northwest Baptist Church where he had many caring Christian friends. He was a loving husband and a wonderful father and grandfather and was dearly loved by his family. He was a gentle man who always greeted you with a smile. He took great pride and joy in children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by all. The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 28, at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel by Pastor Eugene Brinkley and the Rev. Randy McKinney of Northwest Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Northwest Baptist Church, 407 Petree Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106.

GRANT

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Mrs. Lucille Scott Grant, of 2091 A Pacific St., formerly of Winston-Salem, passed away Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Brooklyn. Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at the Frank R. Bell Funeral Home. Mrs. Grant is survived by two brothers, Wendell Scott of Augusta, Ga., and Irvin Scott of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Evelyn Beatty of Durham, and Edith (Ben) Roseboro of Winston-Salem; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Frank R. Bell Funeral Home, 536 Sterling Place, Brooklyn, N.Y. 11238 is in charge of services for Mrs. Lucille Scott Grant.

HILL

LEXINGTON — Mrs. Lillie Sowers Hill, 102, of 6313 Ridge Road died Jan. 25, 2001, at her home in Midway. She was born Nov. 30, 1898, in Davidson County, the daughter of John and Mary Brinkley Sowers. She was a homemaker and the oldest member of Midway United Methodist Church and was an active member as long as health permitted. She was married to Elmer Cletus Hill who preceded her in death Nov. 27, 1980. Mrs. Hill was also preceded in death by a son, Ray Hill, on March 2000. Surviving are two sons, Glenn Hill and wife Virginia and Bruce Hill and wife Peggy; two daughters, Edna Snyder and husband Jack and Mary Tesh and husband John; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren; and special friends, Opal Hutchens, Odessa Lothridge and Pat Williams, who assisted in her care over the years. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at Midway United Methodist Church with the Revs. Harry Sellers and Hollis Youngblood officiating. The body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel and at other times at their respective homes. Memorials may be made to Midway United Methodist Church, 9795 Old Highway 52, Lexington, NC 27295.

JOHNSON

KING — Mr. Clyde M. Johnson, 80, died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, after being in declining health for several years. He was born Aug. 13, 1920, in Stokes County to Zephra Oliver and Minnie Meadows Johnson. Clyde served with the U.S. Army during World War II, was a retired farmer and had also been employed by Pinkerton Security. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Cleo Redding and Maxie Ferguson, and four brothers, Dowell, Denson, Carlis and Moir Johnson. Mr. Johnson is survived by a special brother-in-law, Elmore Redding of Germanton, and a sister-in-law, Jean Johnson of Pfafftown. He was a member of Quaker Gap Baptist Church, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, with Dr. James Baldwin and the Rev. Gerald Jones officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial with military rites by the American Legion Post 290 of King will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends after the service in the church fellowship hall. Memorials may be made to Quaker Gap Baptist Church, 2265 Flat Shoals Road, King, NC 27021.

JOHNSON

SILOAM — Mrs. Julia Lucinda Estep Johnson, 90, passed away Jan. 24, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. Mrs. Johnson was born May 11, 1910, in Wilkes County to David Brian Estep and Sarah Jeanette Marlow Estep. She was married to James Edgar Johnson, who preceded her in death. She was a member of Siloam Baptist Church and was a homemaker. Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. Virginia J. Peele and Mrs. Agnes (Frank) Carlyle of Siloam, Mrs. Agnes (Olin) Poindexter of Elkin, Miss Mozelle Johnson and Mrs. Audrey (John) Scott of Siloam; a daughter-in-law, Kaye Johnson of Lenoir; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by a son, Mr. Hubert '`Johnny’‘ Johnson. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at Siloam Baptist Church by the Rev. Bill Faw. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends and family at the Cox-Needham Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, and other times at Mrs. Johnson’s daughter, Virginia Peele, Hogans Creek Road, Siloam. Memorials may be made in floral tribute or to Siloam Baptist Church cemetery Fund, 6909 Siloam Road, Siloam, NC 27047. The Johnson family is being served by Cox-Needham Funeral Services in Pilot Mountain.
