JOHNSON

Mrs. Mary Fowler Johnson, 88, of Arbor Acres died in her home Jan. 23, 2001. Mrs. Johnson was born Dec. 25, 1912, in Pilot Mountain to the late Mr. Oscar Thomas (O. T.) Fowler Sr. and Mrs. Daisy Ashburn Fowler. Mrs. Johnson was a graduate of Greensboro College and the New York School of Interior Design. She was a prominent interior designer and owned her own business, Mary Johnson, Design Consultant. In her early years, she worked for WSJS Radio as one to the narrators for the Children’s Story Hour and loved volunteering her time to the Little Theatre. Mary was a member of the American Society of Interior Designers and examples of her creative ability and elegant style can be found in many fine homes and business throughout the southeast. She was a member of Centenary United Methodist, Winston-Salem Symphony Guild, Twin City Club, past president of N.C. Medical Auxiliary and was active in the restoration of R.J. Reynolds Auditorium. When Mary was not designing interiors, traveling the world or visiting with her grandchildren, she could be found sculpting a piece of clay. She was the wife of the late Dr. Paul W. Johnson and mother-in-law to the late CDR John C. Scull U.S.N. Surviving are her daughters, Daca Thomas and Maripaul Scull Cosper and their husbands, Ray and Jim; four grandchildren, Lindsay Thomas, Rian Thomas, John Scull and Jim Cosper; two brothers, O.F. Fowler and O.T. Fowler Jr.; and four sisters, Irene Gambill, Mabel Jones, Margaret Macklin and Ruth Lindsay. The family will receive friends from 7t o 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26 at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27 at Centenary United Methodist. Interment will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 4-A Oak Branch Drive, Greensboro, NC 27405; Hospice Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103; or the Children’s Home Society of North Carolina, P.O. Box 14608, Greensboro, NC 27415.

JONES

WALNUT COVE — Mrs. Francis Miller Jones, 94, formerly of Ashe County, died Thursday morning, Jan. 25, 2001, at Walnut Cove Healthcare Center. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Larry Shepherd officiating. Burial will follow in the Ashelawn Memorial Gardens cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour before the funeral service. Mrs. Jones was born in Ashe County on March 9, 1906, to Ben Caudle Miller and Katie Alma Eller Miller. She was a schoolteacher. Her husband, Lee Scott Jones, preceded her in death. She is survived by her daughter, Alma Childress of Walnut Cove; two brothers, Hal Miller of Warrensville, and Ben Miller of Dover, Del.; two sisters, Mary Waldrop and Kate Aberts of Kernersville; one grandchild; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. LOVILL

Nora Lucy Graybeal Lovill, daughter of William Baxter and Maggie Austin Graybeal, passed away Jan. 24, 2001. Ms. Lovill, who was 107 years old, was the widow of W.R. Lovill of Boone. Her children are Peggy Lovill Andrade and the late Robert Lovill. Her surviving siblings are Pearl G. Farthing, Grace G. Rauhof and Frank Graybeal. Ms. Lovill also had four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was a loving, devoted, loyal family matriarch who will be sorely missed.

MATTHEWS

EAST BEND — Mrs. Blanche P. Matthews, 84, of 3228 Smithtown Road died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at her home. She was born in Yadkin County on Aug. 13, 1916, to Calvin Enos and Laura Ann Mathis Pilcher. She was a member of Enon Baptist Church. In addition to being a homemaker, she worked at several local restaurants and delivered meals in the East Bend community. Mrs. Matthews was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil Matthews; a sister; and two brothers. Surviving are her children, Mrs. Virgie (Dee) Callahan of Pfafftown, Dr. Linda McKay of Windsor, Ontario; Calvin Matthews of Charlotte, Dottie (Jerry) Cornelius, Keith (Sherry) Matthews of East Bend and Mark (Melinda) Matthews of Greensboro; a sister, Mrs. Lillian Reich of Lewisville; and eight grandchildren, DeAnn Sibert, Johnanna McKay, Haley Cornelius, Reid Matthews, a very special granddaughter, Amanda Matthews, Matthew Cornelius, Alice Matthews and Laura Matthews. Funeral services will be conducted 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at the Huff Funeral Home Chapel in East Bend by the Rev. Sarah Kalish. The body will lie in state from 2 to 2:30. Burial will follow in the Prospect United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Friday evening at the funeral home.

MOSER

Mrs. Hazel Carter Moser, 87, of State Road died Thursday afternoon Jan. 25, 2001 at Hugh Chatham Nursing Center in Elkin. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church by the Rev. John Attaway and the Rev. Bency Smith. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Mrs. Moser was born in Surry County July 5, 1913, to Rufus J. and Alice Hanes Carter. She was retired from Chatham Manufacturing Co. and was a member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert O. Moser and a son, Steven Moser. Surviving are a daughter, Carolyn (Doug) Norris of State Road; a son, Paul (Mary) Moser of Raleigh; two grandchildren, Scott Norris of State Road and Steven Norris of Winston-Salem; a sister, Marie Nixon of Elkin. The family wishes to thank the staff at Hugh Chatham Nursing Center for the loving care that our mother received. In lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Mount Pleasant Baptist Church Building Fund, State Road, NC 28676. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Kennedy Funeral Home in Elkin.

NOBLE

Mrs. Willie Lee Steaple Noble, 84, of 600 Pitts St. passed away Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, at her residence following a period of illness. She was a native of Abbeyville, S.C. born Dec. 7, 1916, the daughter of the late John and Janie Wilson Steaple. She was a charter member of the Greater St. Matthew Baptist Church, where she was a missionary and a member of the senior choir. She was a retired employee of Wake Forest University and was a member of the Happy Hill Gardens Community Club. She was preceded in death by both husbands, Boyd Lee Archie Sr. and John Willie Noble. She is survived by two sons, Boyd (Juanita) Archie of Winston-Salem and Bobby Ray (Brenda) Noble of Bremerton, Wash.; six grandchildren, a devoted granddaughter, Cynthia A. Coles, Calvin Drummond and Carmen Myers, Cedric Archie all of Winston-Salem and Charlie Noble and Tiffany Noble of Bremerton; six great-grandchildren, including a dear great-grandson, John Coles; a sister-in-law, Alzie Steaple of Washington, Ga.; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at the Greater St. Matthew Baptist Church with the Rev. W.M. Purvis officiating. Interment will be in the Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family visitation will be from 12:30 to 1 p.m. Saturday at the church. The family may be contacted at the home of a son and daughter-in-law, Boyd and Juanita Archie, 2624 Rosemary Drive. PARRIMAN

Mr. Charles Edward Parriman Sr., 56, of Winston-Salem, formerly of 1350 Derry St. passed from labor to reward Jan. 21, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born Dec. 26, 1944, in Winston-Salem to the late Ben Parriman and the late McClester J. Cannon. He was reinstated as a member of Antioch Christian Church and served on the mass choir until his illness. He was employed by USA Staffing (Safeco Insurance Co.) until his work injury. Surviving his passing are a son, Charles E. Parriman Jr.; a daughter, Vicki Renee Parriman; a daughter-in-law, Elizabeth; two brothers, Cole B. Cannon of Sunnyvale, Calif., and Willie J. Cannon of Winston-Salem; two sisters-in-law, Bobbie Cannon of Calif. and Catherine Cannon of North Carolina; three grandchildren; four nieces; an aunt, Bernetta Perryman; and a cousin, James Perryman. Family visitation will be 30 minutes immediately preceding the funeral services, which will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, at Antioch Christian Church, with the Rev. James A. Gilliam officiating. Beasley’s Funeral Home is in charge of all services and arrangements.

PEOPLES

Mrs. Beatrice B. Peoples, 93, of 2 N.E. 30th St., passed at an early hour Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home after a short illness. She was born in Kingstree, S.C. on Feb. 28, 1907, to the late Joseph V. and Emma Cooper Barr. She later relocated to Winston-Salem where she was employed with R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., and retired after 40 years of service. She was a faithful member of St. Paul United Methodist where she was a member of the adult Sunday school class and the United Methodist Women Group, serving faithfully until her health failed. In the community she was a member of the Greenway Ideal Community Club. Mrs. Peoples was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Johnny Adams Peoples on April 1, 1969. She was also preceded in death by a sister; four brothers; and a half brother. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at St. Paul United Methodist Church with Pastor Donald Jenkins officiating. Interment will follow in the family plot at Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2 p.m. at the church. Surviving is a son, Joseph B. James; a daughter-in-law, Martha C. James both of Winston-Salem, N.C.; four grandchildren, Maurice James of Raleigh, Miriam Heath, Melvin James and a very devoted granddaughter, Marilyn James all of Winston-Salem; two nephews, John Barr of Bronx, N.Y., and the Rev. Willie J. Barr, Florence, S.C.; four nieces, Annie James Reid of Brooklyn, Eliza Robinson of Camden, N.J., Mary Pressley of Washington, D.C., and Rose Mary West of Winston-Salem; and other nieces, nephews, great grandchildren, cousins, sisters-in-law, relatives and friends. Also surviving is a special friend, Lois Crosby, friends of the 30th Street and Greenway community along with her loving animals: her dog '`Rusty’‘ and her cat '`Smokey’‘. The family may be contacted and the cortege will assemble and leave from the residence at 1 p.m. Saturday. The family of Mrs. Beatrice Peoples wishes to thank Dr.’s. Rufty, Rankin, Fina and Stewart for the fine care that you have given to her over the years and most recently to Dr. Susan Hines, the doctors and staff at Forsyth Medical Center ICU and the Kate B. PERRY-LEATH

Mrs. Beverly Lynette Perry-Leath, 36, of 2713 Stable Hill Trail, Kernersville passed away Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, at the Kate Bitting Reynolds Hospice Home after an extended period of illness. Born in Henderson Aug. 6, 1964, to Lewis Arch Perry and the late Louvenia Lewis Perry, she was educated in the public schools of Vance County. She held an AAS degree from Vance Granville Community College, was a graduate of Winston-Salem State University with a BA degree. She was enrolled in the graduate studies program of Appalachian State University, Mrs. Leath retired after 10 years of service to the City of Winston-Salem as an information systems analyst. She was of the Baptist faith having joined the Spring Street Baptist Church in Henderson as a child. She became a faithful member of Mount Zion Baptist Church under the pastorate of Dr. Serenus T. Churn, Sr. where she served as a member of the board of deaconess, the Sunday church school and the Inspirational Choir. She is survived by her husband, Robert Leath; a daughter, Samantha Leath; two sons, Christopher Leath and Joel Leath; her father, Lewis Arch Perry of Henderson; three sisters, Maxine Banks (Ellis) of Richmond, Va., Anita Perry of Raleigh and Kathryn Perry of California; four brothers, Cecil Perry (Judy) of Washington, D.C., Joel Perry (Cheryl) of Ohio, Ronald Perry (Janice) of Maryland and Kelvin Perry of Raleigh; her father-in-law, James A. Leath, Sr. of Burlington; two sisters-in-law, Elaine Warren (Jerry) and Susan Leath; two brothers-in-law, James Leath, Jr., all of Burlington and William Leath of Charlotte; 16 nieces, nine nephews and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at Mount Zion Baptist Church with Dr. Serenus T. Churn, Sr. officiating. The family visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. to noon Saturday at the church. Interment will follow in the Ilong Baptist Church cemetery in Kittrell. (Russell)

SWING

Mrs. Pansy Shaver Swing, 83, of Winston-Salem passed away Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel. Interment will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Swing was born in Winston-Salem on April 16, 1917, the daughter of Carlie Columbus and Eva Heitman Shaver. She was married to the late Hollis Cleo Swing. They were owners and operators of an electrical contracting company and were charter members of Buckrow Baptist Church in Hampton, Va. Locally she attended Waughtown Baptist Church. Surviving are four sisters, Edna S. Temples and Vivian S. Rothrock of Winston-Salem, Evelyn S. John of Tamerack, Fla., and Rachel S. McKnight of Kernersville; and a number of nieces and nephews. Many friends will miss her. The family will receive friends at Vogler & Sons Chapel from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.

WALL

RURAL HALL — Mrs. Oneda B. Wall, 68, died at Forsyth Medical Center on Tuesday Jan. 23, 2001, following a period of declining health. A native of Stokes County, she was born on May 26, 1932, to the late Curner '`C.B’‘ and Zenobia Simmons Boyles. Mrs. Wall was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith. She loved to play bingo with her friends at White Lake. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, sister and friend. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Wall was preceded in death by four sisters and three brothers. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Billy Raye Wall of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Debbie Bryan and husband Jeff of Germanton; two sons, Steve Wall and wife Janet and Stan Wall of Rural Hall; four grandchildren, Amber and Ashleigh Bryan and Brandon and Michael Wall; two sisters, Georgia '`Shortie’‘ Hall and husband Rupert and Beulah '`Boots’‘ Boles all of King; a special brother-in-law, T.A. Bennett of Rural Hall; a half brother, Ira Boyles and wife Mary Ann of Stanley; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Mount Olive Baptist Church with the Rev. Paul Dean and the Rev. Randy Roberts officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to Mount Olive Baptist Church, 5413 NC 66 Highway S., King, NC 27021.

WHITAKER

HAMPTONVILLE — Clayton H. Whitaker, 65, of Hamptonville died Wednesday, Jan. 24 at Hoots Memorial Hospital. Mr. Whitaker was born July 7, 1935, in Yadkin County to Walter B. and Lelah Ladd Whitaker. He was a retired tobacco farmer and of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Hubert James Whitaker and Mack Arthur Whitaker; and two sisters, Hester L. Whitaker and Minnie Wood. Surviving are a sister, Ola Cook of Hamptonville; three brothers, J. Roy Whitaker of Hamptonville, Samuel (Janet) Whitaker of Hamptonville and Jerry (Gail) Whitaker of Johnson City, Tenn.; three nephews; and four nieces. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, at Gentry Family Funeral Home, 4517 Little Mountain Road, Jonesville, by the Rev. Don Ball. Burial will follow in the Asbury United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26, at the funeral home.

WRAY

Beulah Gray Woods Wray, beloved mother and grandmother, died peacefully at her home Tuesday Jan. 23, 2001. Although she will be greatly missed, her family takes comfort in knowing that she is now with her Lord Jesus Christ. Mrs. Wray was born in Stokes County on May 27, 1918, to Emmet Lee and Virginia Shelton Woods. She attended Mayodan High School and played forward on the basketball team for three years, scoring 21 of 25 free throws in one memorable contest. In 1934, she married William Harold Wray, who preceded her in death in Oct. 1973. After 30 years of service, Mrs. Wray retired from P.H. Hanes Knitwear Co. in 1983. A highlight of her retirement years was traveling to visit her sister Maggie in Baltimore and her grandson, Billy in Virginia Beach. She also enjoyed local outings with special friends and family. Mrs. Wray was an active member of North Winston Church of God throughout much of her life, where she served faithfully in the nursery. She attributed all blessings in her life as gifts from God and was forever devoted to him. Mrs. Wray was preceded in death by her husband and a son, William Jack Wray, as well as seven siblings, Carrie Woods Morris, Nellie Woods Reid, Martha Woods Gatewood, Rosie Lee Woods, Levi Woods, Jim Bill Woods, and John Taft Woods. Surviving are a son, Gene Harold Wray (Mary) of Rural Hall; six grandchildren, Eunice Wray Monroe (Bill) of Palm Bay, Fla., William David Wray (Michelle) of Virginia Beach, Cindy Wray Hodnett (Dan) of Clemmons, Robin Wray Howell (Allen) of Mocksville, Dr. Kathy Wray Richardson (Samuel) of Greensboro and Michael Gene Wray of Rural Hall; eight great-grandchildren, Candace, Kara, Cody, Macy, Dakota, Delaney, Alexander and Elizabeth; two sisters, Maggie Woods Matthews and Bertie Woods Martin; and a dear niece and nephew, Lois and Steve Monk of Winston-Salem. To comply with Mrs. Wray’s wishes, there will be no formal visitation. A service for family, close friends and neighbors will be on Saturday Jan. 27, 2001, at 2 p.m. at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home in Rural Hall. The Rev. Riley Puckett will officiate. Pallbearers will include three nephews, Alton and Steve Martin, and Dan Gatewood; two great-nephews, Steven C. Monk and Trenton Gatewood; and three grandsons-in-law. Private interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. Flowers will be welcomed or memorials may be made to the Billy Graham Association.
