KEY
ELKIN — Mr. Bruce Renegar Key, 52, of 1657 Poplar Springs Road died Thursday evening, Jan. 25, 2001, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Bessie’s Chapel Baptist Church by Rev. Ralph Grose. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Mr. Key was born in Surry Co. March 18, 1948, to Sam L. and Audrey Renegar Key. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of Bessie’s Chapel Baptist Church. Mr. Key was former disc jocky for radio stations WAIR in Winston-Salem and WGAU in Atlanta and was formerly employed by Phillips Van Heusen in Jonesville. He was preceded in death by his father, Sam L. Key and two sisters, Wanda and Becky Key. Surviving are his mother, Audrey R. Key of the home. The family suggests that any memorials be made to Bessie’s Chapel Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Kennedy Funeral Home in Elkin.
LOVILL
Nora Lucy Graybeal Lovill, daughter of William Baxter and Maggie Austin Graybeal, passed away Jan. 24, 2001. Ms. Lovill, who was 107 years old, was the widow of W.R. Lovill of Boone. Her children are Peggy Lovill Andrade and the late Robert Lovill. Her surviving siblings are Pearl G. Farthing, Grace G. Rauhof and Frank Graybeal. Ms. Lovill also had four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was a loving, devoted, loyal family matriarch who will be sorely missed.
MARTIN
RURAL HALL — Mr. James Dexter Martin, 83, of died at his home on Friday morning, Jan. 26, 2001, following a lengthy period of declining health. A native of Cliffside, he was born Dec. 23, 1917, to the late Grayson Christopher and Nemmie Carpenter Martin. Mr. Martin was a member of Bethany Baptist Church, Old Town Masonic Lodge #751 and the Oasis Shine. He retired from Duke Power Co. as an area coordinator in systems maintenance support/steam production division , with more than 35 years of service. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister. Surviving is his loving wife of 58 years, Jaunice H. Martin of the home; a daughter, Jane M. Pender of Mooresville; a granddaughter, Cecelia J. Myers and husband Tim of Monroe; a brother, G.C. Martin Jr. and wife Doris of Forest City; and a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, the Rev. Melvin Calvert and wife Floride. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home, Rural Hall Chapel with the Rev. Don Harvey and the Rev. Doug Jordon officiating. Burial will follow in Crestview Memorial Park with full Masonic Rites. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Saturday evening at the funeral home. MATTHEWS
EAST BEND — Mrs. Blanche P. Matthews, 84, of 3228 Smithtown Road died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at her home. She was born in Yadkin County on Aug. 13, 1916, to Calvin Enos and Laura Ann Mathis Pilcher. She was a member of Enon Baptist Church. In addition to being a homemaker, she worked at several local restaurants and delivered meals in the East Bend community. Mrs. Matthews was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil Matthews; a sister; and two brothers. Surviving are her children, Mrs. Virgie (Dee) Callahan of Pfafftown, Dr. Linda McKay of Windsor, Ontario; Calvin Matthews of Charlotte, Dottie (Jerry) Cornelius, Keith (Sherry) Matthews of East Bend and Mark (Melinda) Matthews of Greensboro; a sister, Mrs. Lillian Reich of Lewisville; and eight grandchildren, DeAnn Sibert, Johnanna McKay, Haley Cornelius, Reid Matthews, a very special granddaughter, Amanda Matthews, Matthew Cornelius, Alice Matthews and Laura Matthews. Funeral services will be conducted 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at the Huff Funeral Home Chapel in East Bend by the Rev. Sarah Kalish. The body will lie in state from 2 to 2:30. Burial will follow in the Prospect United Methodist Church cemetery.
MILLER
Mr. William Lawrence Miller, 70, of Winston-Salem, died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Sept. 21, 1930, in Forsyth County to James Rural and Iva Mae Redding Miller. Mr. Miller was of the Methodist faith and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Surviving are his wife of 43 years, Shelby Jane Miller of the home; three daughters, Crystal Sunshine Miller and Roy Eugene Bryant of Winston-Salem, Penny Renne Joyce and husband Steve Eugene Joyce and Susan Lynn Joyce and husband Rufus Daniel Joyce all of Lexington, S.C.; a son, James William Miller and wife Sandra of the home; his mother of Winston-Salem; five sisters, Rosie Lee Carter of Winston-Salem, Pauline Newsome of King, Dorothy Harris, Carol Jean Bostine and Sylvia Ann Weaver all of Winston-Salem; a brother, James Miller of Freeport, Texas; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. The family will receive friends following the service.
SAMUELS
Mr. Leroy Samuels, 73, of 1100 N. Cleveland Ave. Apartment B., Winston-Salem, the son of the late Ozzie and Cleo S. Williams was born March 6, 1927, in Timmonsville, S.C. He was a resident of Winston-Salem Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center for the past several months. He passed away Wednesday, Jan. 24 after a long illness. At an early age, he relocated to Winston-Salem and attended the public schools. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and later worked various jobs at R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. and Smith Reynolds Airport. He joined Goler Memorial AME Zion Church and remained faithful until his heath failed. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Inez Samuels; parents Ozzie and Cleo Williams; uncles Luther, M.C., Sylvester and Tom Samuels; and aunts Rosalee and Bessie Samuels, Fannie King, Azalee Hill, Earlene Brown and Annie Mae Shields. He leaves to cherish his memories his son, Mr. Jerone (Carolyn) Samuels; grandson Mr. Sterling (Lois) Samuels; granddaughter Miss Sonjia Samuels; three great-grandchildren all of Winston-Salem; an uncle, Mr. Levern Samuels of Darlington, S.C.; cousin Willie J. Porter of Winston-Salem; a host of other relatives; the Goler Memorial Church family; and many friends. Funeral services for Mr. Leroy Samuels will be held 1:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 29 at Goler Memorial AME Zion Church wit the Rev. W.R. Hairston officiating. The family will meet with friends in the church from 1 to 1:30 p.m. (30 minutes prior to services). The funeral procession will leave from the home of his son, Mr. Jerone Samuels, 2810 Bainbridge Court, Winston-Salem. Interment will be in Evergreen cemetery. Clark S. Madeline Louise White Shuler, 70, of Winston-Salem passed away at NC Baptist Medical Center Friday, Jan. 26, 2001. She was born Sept. 27, 1930, in Iredell County to the late Fred C. and Eva Burton White. She was married on April 5, 1947 to Thomas Garland Shuler. In addition to her husband of 53 years, her son, Randy Garland Shuler of Clemmons, survives her. She was also the very proud grandmother of Thomas Shane Shuler and Shana Ann Shuler of Winston-Salem and Taylor Alyse Shuler of Clemmons. In addition to her immediate family, she is survived by her sisters, Pearl Matthews and husband Gray, Marie Harpe and husband John and Hazel Davis and husband Charles. Her sisters, Helen Yates and Anna Belle Howard and brother Thomas White predeceased her. Madeline was a lifelong member of Rosemont Baptist Church in Winston-Salem. She retired from AT&T and spent her remaining years cherishing her family, especially her beloved grandchildren. She was an example to all in her unending devotion to her family as well as her desire to do for others. She was always there with helping hands to assist her friends and family during sickness and health, good times and bad. All those who knew her had their lives touched in a very special way, one that will always rekindle warm thoughts of her kindness. The family will receive friends at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home on Silas Creek Parkway Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and other times at the family home. NEW BERN — George Leonard Speas, beloved father and grandfather of 3610 Wedgewood Drive died Jan. 26, 2001, at Craven Regional Medical Center. Mr. Speas was born Dec. 14, 1913, in North Wilkesboro then spent his youth and adult years in Winston-Salem. He served in the U.S. Army during Word War II, fought at Normandy and was named assistant chaplain of his anti-aircraft division. Mr. Speas retired from the Winston-Salem Journal & Sentinel.His last position as national advertising manager capped 50 years of employment with the newspaper. Mr. Speas retired in 1978 and then moved to New Bern to be closer to his family. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Helen Frances Speas. Surviving are his daughter, Ann Speas Emmerich, son-in-law Craig Harris Emmerich, grandson Christopher Harris Emmerich '`Kit’‘ and granddaughter Brooke Hanes Emmerich all of New Bern and sister-in-law Janice Speas of Winston-Salem. The family will receive friends at the Speas residence, 3610 Wedgewood Drive. WALNUT COVE — Mrs. Ruth Davis Welch, 82 died at the Forsyth Medical Center on Thursday evening Jan. 25, 2001, after a brief period of declining health. A native of Yadkin County, she was born Sept. 26, 1918, to the late James Lee and Lillie Petree Davis. Mrs. Welch was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church and had retired from Old Dominion Box Co. after 32 years of service. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon Lester Welch on Dec. 7, 1970, a daughter, JoAnne Welch in 1950, two sisters; and three brothers. Surviving are three daughters, Shelby S. Woodruff of Pinnacle, Nancy W. Mason of Germanton and LaVerne Garis and husband Jim of Rural Hall; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dorothy Priddy of King and Lorene Taylor and husband Glenn of East Bend; and several nieces, nephews and special friends from Walnut Ridge Assisted Living in Walnut Cove. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, at Matthews Chapel Church of Christ, officiated by Ronald Exline, Minister, Jim Miller, Minister, and Peter Cain, Minister. Mr. James Edward Werts of 282 North River Road, Monroe Fall, Ohio and formerly of Winston-Salem passed away Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, in that city at his residence. WRAY
Beulah Gray Woods Wray, beloved mother and grandmother, died peacefully at her home Tuesday Jan. 23, 2001. Although she will be greatly missed, her family takes comfort in knowing that she is now with her Lord Jesus Christ. Mrs. Wray was born in Stokes County on May 27, 1918, to Emmet Lee and Virginia Shelton Woods. She attended Mayodan High School and played forward on the basketball team for three years, scoring 21 of 25 free throws in one memorable contest. In 1934, she married William Harold Wray, who preceded her in death in October 1973. After 30 years of service, Mrs. Wray retired from P.H. Hanes Knitwear Co. in 1983. A highlight of her retirement years was traveling to visit her sister Maggie in Baltimore and her grandson, Billy, in Virginia Beach. She also enjoyed local outings with special friends and family. Mrs. Wray was an active member of North Winston Church of God throughout much of her life, where she served faithfully in the nursery. She attributed all blessings in her life as gifts from God and was forever devoted to him. Mrs. Wray was preceded in death by her husband and a son, William Jack Wray, as well as seven siblings, Carrie Woods Icenhour, Nellie Woods Reid, Martha Woods Gatewood, Rosie Lee Woods, Levi Woods, Jim Bill Woods, and John Taft Woods. Surviving are a son, Gene Harold Wray (Mary) of Rural Hall; six grandchildren, Eunice Wray Monroe (Bill) of Palm Bay, Fla., William David Wray (Michelle) of Virginia Beach, Cindy Wray Hodnett (Dan) of Clemmons, Robin Wray Howell (Allen) of Mocksville, Dr. Kathy Wray Richardson (Samuel) of Greensboro and Michael Gene Wray of Rural Hall; eight great-grandchildren, Candace, Kara, Cody, Macy, Dakota, Delaney, Alexander and Elizabeth; two sisters, Maggie Woods Matthews and Bertie Woods Martin; and a dear niece and nephew, Lois and Steve Monk of Winston-Salem. To comply with Mrs. Wray’s wishes, there will be no formal visitation. A service for family, close friends and neighbors will be on Saturday Jan. 27, 2001, at 2 p.m. at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home in Rural Hall. The Rev. Riley Puckett will officiate. Pallbearers will include three nephews, Alton and Steve Martin, and Dan Gatewood; two great-nephews, Steven C. Monk and Trenton Gatewood; and three grandsons-in-law. Private interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. Flowers will be welcomed or memorials may be made to the Billy Graham Association.

Mrs. Lorena Manaugh Andrew, 82, died Dec. 22 at Arbor Acres. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, at Pfafftown Christian Church. Dr. Tom Everton will officiate. Surviving are her husband of almost 60 years, Dan E. Andrew of Brighton Gardens; her two sons, Dr. Ray Hall Andrew and his wife Dr. Susan Willis of Winston-Salem and Dr. John Allan Andrew and his wife Dr. Lori Andrew of Leesburg, Va.; one daughter, Lynne Andrew Dickerson and her husband, Francis, of Los Gatos, Calif.; and six grandchildren. Mrs. Glenola (Ba-Baw) Mahaffey Cheek of Hawthorne Road Winston-Salem passed away Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, at her home. Mrs. Cheek was born April 4, 1936, in Forsyth County to the late Clarence P. Mahaffey. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Luther Mahaffey and Clarence (C.P.) Mahaffey. She retired from AT&T in 1989 after 25 years of service. Mrs. Cheek spent her life devoted to and loving her family. Mrs. Cheek is survived by her mother, Mamie Gregory Mahaffey of Winston-Salem; one daughter, Debra Cheek Conley of Mocksville; three grandchildren, Keely M. McCollum of Clemson, S.C., Rebecca E. Conley of Mocksville and Robert G. Conley Jr. of Mocksville; one brother, Garner Mahaffey of Winston-Salem; three sisters, Ruby Byrd of Winston-Salem, Flora Nichols of Walburg, and Erma Noah of Greensboro; a special lifelong friend and sister-in-law, Patricia P. Cheek; and several nieces and nephews. Graveside Services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 29, at Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens in Winston-Salem with Dr. David Gilbreath officiating.
