COATES

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Kenneth Wayne Coates Sr., 53, of Pinegrove Drive, died in Conway, S.C. He was born in Conway, S.C., a son of S.L. Coates and the late Grace Ammons Coates. Kenneth had been in the U.S. Army Combat Engineers and was an architect at Owens Steel for many years. He enjoyed playing golf and billiards. He was a loving father and brother, always having a smile. He was also a role model for his nieces and nephews. Besides his father of Loris, S.C., he is survived by one son, Kenneth Wayne Coates jr. of Walkertown; three sisters, Elizabeth Charping, Patricia Usry and Linda Pawlowski, all of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and his former wife and mother of Ken Jr., Margaret C. Taylor of Walkertown. A memorial service will be held 5 p.m. Monday, Jan. 29, at Living Faith Church, Myrtle Beach. Inurnment will take place at Centenary Methodist Church cemetery, Marion, S.C., Saturday, Feb. 3. Memorials may be made to the Kenneth Coates Jr. Fund, c/o Living Faith Church, 4513 Highway 17 Bypass, Myrtle Beach, SC 29577.

DAVIS

Mrs. Viola Crews Davis, 95, formerly of Winston-Salem, passed away Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, at the Willowbrook Health Care Center in Yadkinville. She was born Dec. 29, 1905, in Forsyth County to Bessie L. Markland and James Brantley Crews. Mrs. Davis was of the Moravian faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sam Si Davis and a grandchild, Lisa Davis; three sisters and; a brother. Surviving are, two sons, James B. Davis (wife Carolyn) of Advance and John W. Davis (wife Nancy) of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Nancy D. Woosley (husband Tommy) of Hickory; a stepdaughter, Doris Yontz; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and three step grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Stuart Zimmerman and Dr. Wayde Goodall officiating. Burial will follow in the Gardens of Memory in Walkertown. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Alzheimer’s Association, 3420 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC 28215-3298. The family extends their sincere appreciation and gratitude to the staff and caregivers at Willowbrook for their love and care given to Viola.

FLYNN

Mrs. Elizabeth Alley Flynn, 88, of 4755 Country Club Road died Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Chapel with Dr. Tom Everton and Rev. Louis Locke officiating. Interment will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. Mrs. Flynn was born in Rockingham County on May 22, 1912, to Augustus Wesley and Ollie Mae Moore Alley. She lived most of her life in Forsyth County and was a member of Pfafftown Christian Church. Mrs. Flynn retired from P.H. Hanes Knitting Company after 45 years of service. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Gray Flynn, in 1995, by a brother, Thomas Alley, and by a sister, Lula Carter. Surviving are her two children, Linda Powell and her husband Ronnie of Walnut Cove and David Wayne Flynn and his wife, Carter, of Virginia Beach, Va. She is also survived by two grandchildren, Melissa and Nicole Flynn of Reston, Va.; three sisters, Frances Ingram, Helen Dula and Barbara Hall; one brother, A.W. Alley; and one brother-in-law, Clyde Dula. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Pfafftown Christian Church, 3323 Transou Road, Pfafftown, NC 27040.

FLYNT

William H. Flynt Sr., 75, of Kernersville died Jan. 23, 2001. Memorials may be directed to the Bowman Gray School of Medicine, Department of Neurobiology & Anatomy, Winston-Salem, NC 27157.

FULK

Mrs. Bessie Clyde Myers Fulk died Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Sept. 27, 1905, to James O. and Nancy Wiles Myers in Wilkes County. Mrs. Fulk spent her early childhood at the Baptist Children’s Home in Thomasville. She retired from the Container Corporation with 27 years of service and attended Oaklawn Baptist Church. Her husband, John Hobert Fulk, and two sons, Melvin Leonard and John H. Fulk Jr., preceded Mrs. Fulk in death. Surviving are four daughters, Betty Tally and husband Shelton of Walkertown, Marlene Kiser of Walkertown, Patricia Sell and husband Robert of Winston-Salem and Judy Batten of Kernersville; two sons, Clyde (Bill) Fulk and wife Nancy and Donald R. Fulk and wife Iris of Winston-Salem; 20 grandchildren and 43 great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 29, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Kevin Kilbreth and Pastor Rod Sharp officiating. Interment will follow in Woodland cemetery. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Baptist Children’s Home, P.O. Box 338, Thomasville, NC 27361-0338 or to the Oaklawn Baptist Church, Vision to Victory Building Fund, 3500 Kernersville Rd., Winston-Salem, NC 27107.

KLIEFORTH

TORONTO, Canada — Mr. Charles Raymond Klieforth, 52, died unexpectedly Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, in Toronto, Canada. He is survived by his mother and father, Raymond and Vera Klieforth of Maine; two devoted daughters, Jessica Klieforth and Kimberly Hash and husband Norman of North Carolina; three grandchildren, Mitchell, Noah and Carly Hash of North Carolina; former wife Melinda Klieforth of North Carolina; one brother, James W. Klieforth and wife Diane of Hawaii; three sisters, Karen Neveu and husband Bruno of Texas, Mary Beth Hughes of Texas and Therese Murray and husband Michael of Illinois; and a special aunt, Mary D. Ruhl of Wisconsin. The family will receive friends 4-6 p.m., Jan. 30, at Clements Funeral Home, 1105 Broad St., Durham, NC 27705. Memorial service will follow. Memorials can be made to the American Diabetes. Association.

LEE

ADVANCE — Mr. Robert Scott Lee, 50, of Advance died Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born to Robert B. and Ruth West Lee Dec. 25, 1950, in Winston-Salem. He was a member of Yadkin Valley Baptist Church. Mr. Lee was preceded in death by his father. He is survived by his mother, Ruth West Lee of the home; one sister, Martha Shinault and one niece, Elaine Miller, both of Advance. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 29, at Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel by Rev. Ronnie Craddock. Burial will follow at Yadkin Valley Baptist Church cemetery in Advance. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel.

LINDSEY

JONESVILLE — Mrs. Betty Couch Lindsey, 63, of Jonesville died Saturday, Jan. 27, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Lindsey was born May 10, 1937, in Yadkin County to Jessie Sexton and Bessie Carter Couch. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and was a member of Swan Creek Baptist Church. Mrs. Lindsey was preceded in death by her parents and by three brothers, Roscoe, Robert and Dallas Couch. Surviving are her husband, James L. Lindsey of the home; five children, Randy (Teresa) Lindsey of King, Robin (Ginger) Lindsey of Elkin, Ronnie (Crystal) Lindsey of Westfield, Jeannie (Robert) Kent of Jonesville and David (Carrie) Lindsey of Denver, N.C.; ten grandchildren, Chris Lindsey, Brian Lindsey, Casie Lindsey, Sheena Lindsey, Steven Lindsey, Heather Lindsey, Nina Lindsey, Kristi Kent, David Hemrick and Nicole Lee Hemrick; one great-grandchild, Jessica Frazier; one sister, Neallie Sale of Hamptonville; and three brothers, Clifton Couch of Hamptonville, David Monroe Couch of Rural Hall and Jessie D. Couch of Hamptonville. Funeral Services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30, at Swan Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Nat Thompson. Mrs. Lindsey will lie in state 1:30-2 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow in the Church cemetery. The family will receive friends 6-8:00 p.m. Monday, Jan. 29, at Gentry Family Funeral Home, 4517 Little Mountain Road, Jonesville, N.C.

MATHERLY

MOCKSVILLE — Mrs. Aralee Adams Brooks Matherly, 80, of Michaels Road died Friday night at her home. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday in Eaton Funeral Chapel with Rev. George Troyer and Rev. Larry Twitty officiating. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday in Lakeview Memorial Park in Greensboro. The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Sunday. Mrs. Matherly was born Feb. 14, 1920, in Wilkes County to the late William Davis and Fannie Veora Walker Adams and was a homemaker. She was a member of the Mocksville Wesleyan Church. She was preceded in death by her first husband, John Clarence Brooks, and also by her second husband, J.B. Matherly. Also deceased is one son, Donald Franklin Brooks, and ten brothers and sisters. Surviving is her daughter, Wanda Brooks of Mocksville; five grandchildren, Donna Lea Marsh and Troy, Susette Dudley, Michelle Walser and Jimmie, Damon Wells Brooks and Janette and Nicole Hege and Mike; five great grandchildren, Summer, Hannah, Serina, Emily and Alyssa; and one daughter-in-law, Dawn Brooks of Lewisville.

MOSER

Mrs. Katie Belle Crouch Moser, 79, of Meadowbrook Manor, Clemmons, died after a lengthy illness Friday, Jan. 26, 2001. She was born Jan. 24, 1922, to Edward L. and Nadia Puryear Crouch in Forsyth County. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. Mrs. Moser was preceded in death by two brothers, John Crouch and Walter Crouch. She is survived by her husband Thurman C. Moser of Meadowbrook Manor in Clemmons; two daughters, Thurma Moser Dudley of Winston-Salem and Linda M. Brewer and husband Tommy of Lexington; three grandchildren, Melinda Dudley Odom, Jeffrey Dudley and Pamela D. Brewer; three great-grandchildren, Justin and William Odom, and Joseph Dudley; two brothers, Frank Crouch of Greensboro and Carl Crouch of North Miami, Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held noon Monday, Jan. 29, at Trinity United Methodist Church by Rev. Ervin Houser. The family will receive friends following the service at the church, 3819 Country Club Road, Winston-Salem, N.C., with food and fellowship to follow the service.

NAYLOR

ARNOLDSBURG, W. Va. — Mrs. Irene Eileen Naylor of Arnoldsburg, W. Va., expired on Friday, Jan. 26, 2001. A graveside memorial service will be held in West Virginia. Sympathies may be sent to 4990-F. Kinnamon Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. Mrs. Naylor is survived by her daughter, Vickey Naylor Shelby; three grandsons, John, Shawn and Michael Shelby; two daughters-in-law, Misty and Dawn Shelby; and five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Lewis Naylor, and her sister, Ollidene Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the donor’s choice.

RICHARDSON

Mary Elizabeth Douthit Richardson, 61, of 2509 Gilmer Ave., died Jan. 27, 2001, at Forsyth Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness. She was born Dec. 15, 1939, in Forsyth County. She was the oldest daughter of Elmore Douthit and Beulah Jarrett Douthit. Mary Richardson graduated from Atkins High School. She retired from the Forsyth County School System (Mineral Springs Elementary School). She was a member of Piney Grove United Methodist Church, Advance, and was a faithful member of the Usher Board, serving as president until her health declined. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Shirley (Pastor Dairl Scott) of Pfafftown; one stepdaughter, Mrs. Cheryl (Terry) Warren of Winston-Salem; two sons, Joseph Richardson Jr. and Ilhan Richardson of the city; one sister, Brenda Douthit; four brothers, Elmore (Patricia) Douthit, Willie Douthit, Bobby Douthit and James Douthit, all of the city; four grandchildren, Dairl Scott Jr., Shalon Scott, Brittany Richardson and Christian Warren; a devoted aunt, Rosa Lee Douthit of Philadelphia, Pa.; and a host of relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 31, at Piney Grove United Methodist Church, Advance. Services will be conducted by the Rev. Arnetta Beverly. The Rev. Glover will be officiating. Burial will follow in the Piney Grove United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30, at Gilmore Funeral Home. Arrangements entrusted to Gilmore Funeral Home.

GRAHAM — Mrs. Lois Mildred Porter Ritter, the wife of William Herman '`Bill’‘ Ritter, of 2022 Crescent Drive, Graham, died at 4:40 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at the Hospice Home. She was born in Danville, Va., to the late Hugh Gibson Porter and Aubrey Perkins Porter. A graduate of the Women’s College at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, she was retired from the Burlington School System as a special-education teacher and was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. Monday, Jan. 29, at Grace United Methodist Church. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30, at Forest Lawn cemetery, Greensboro. The Rev. Margaret Crandell (Pastor) and the Rev. Carson Wiggins will conduct services. Her son, Stephen Brady Ritter, preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband; daughters Mrs. Bale (Virgil) Ritter Dodson of Yadkinville and Mrs. Lynn (Dwight) Ritter Thomas of Efland; and two grandchildren and their spouses, Ryan and Tiffany Dodson of Wisconsin, and Shannon and James Sheek of Yadkinville. The family will receive friends at the church after the service. Memorials may be made to the Hospice at Alamance-Caswell, P.O.
