FOSTER

ADVANCE — Mr. John Taylor Foster, 83, died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Nov. 19, 1917, in Davie County to Romulis Alvin and Nannie Bell Smith Foster. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters; and two brothers. Mr. Foster was a member and deacon at Yadkin Valley Baptist Church. He was also a member of Oak Crest Baptist Church in Ocala, Fla. He was dedicated to his church, Lord, family and country. He served in the Philippines during World War II with the U.S. Army. He is survived by his wife, Pearl Elizabeth Cope of the home; a daughter, Patricia Ann Dowell of Indiana; three sons, Jerry Foster and John Alvin Foster of Florida and Donald Foster of Advance; two sisters, Wilma Boger of Reeds and Nola Jane Payne of Bethania; three brothers, Billy Clay Foster of Gadson, Ala., Jim Foster of Tyro and Alvin Gene Foster of Advance; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two devoted and loving friends, Bonnie and Eddie Weatherman of Advance. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, at Yadkin Valley Baptist Church by the Rev. Ronnie Craddock and the Rev. Leon Wood. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, at Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Yadkin Valley Baptist Church Building Fund, 1324 Yadkin Valley Road, Advance, NC 27006.

HARTMAN

LEXINGTON – Eliza Berrier Hartman, 95, of Meadowbrook Terrace, formerly of Frye Bridge Road, Clemmons, died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, at Meadowbrook Terrace in Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 2 at Union Grove Baptist Church where she was a member. The Rev. Harold Fletcher will conduct the services. Burial will be in the Union Grove Baptist Church cemetery. Mrs. Hartman was born in Davidson County on May 30, 1905, to Charlie Wesley Berrier and Jennie Hege Berrier. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elser Monroe Hartman on April 18, 1998, and brothers Walter Berrier and Paul Berrier and a sister, Ester Berrier. Surviving are her daughters, Lucille Leatherman and husband William of Lexington, Lula Jackson and husband Frank of Clemmons; three grandchildren, Randy Gaithers, Angie Dove and Greg Gaither; three great-grand-children, Mitch Gaither, Allison Gaither and Noah Dove; brothers Carl Berrier of Welcome and Joe Berrier of Winston-Salem; and a sister, Dora Berrier of Lexington. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Davidson Funeral Home and other times at the home of her daughter, Lucille Leatherman, 4207 Arnold Road. Flowers will be appreciated or memorials may be made to Hospice of Winston-Salem, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

HELTON

EAST BEND — Mr. Harry Lee Helton, 92, of 2628 Rockett Road, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He was born in Yadkin County on Aug. 5, 1908, to Charles Walter and Mary Branon Helton. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Alfred and Bill Helton and a sister, Georgia Horton. Surviving are his wife, Margaret Inez Cornelius Helton of the home; two daughters, Joan Helton (Edward) Hobson of Raleigh and Margaret Helton (Leon) Wooten of East Bend; four sisters, Gladys Hoots of Hamptonville, Ina Wagoner of Elkin, Hattie Weatherman of Winston-Salem and Mary Hazel Helton of Yadkinville; five grandchildren, John E. (Shirley) Hobson of Raleigh, Gregory H. (Diana) Hobson of Lynchburg, Va., Robin Wooten of Greensboro, Sherry Wooten of Charlotte and Alison (Kent) Shore of Knoxville, Tenn.; and seven great-grand-children, Lauren Hobson, Sandi Hobson, Jake Hobson, Chad Hobson, Lindsay Shore, Travis Shore and Nicholas Wooten. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday Feb. 2, 2001, at the Union Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Kenny Gooden. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Thursday evening at Huff Funeral Home in East Bend. HICKMAN

Mr. Mitchell B. Hickman, aka Scooter, 38, of 410 E. 33rd St. passed away Saturday night at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mr. Hickman was born Sept. 19, 1962, in Forsyth County to the late Moses and Azalee Hickman. He graduated from the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school system and was a former employee of Trenwest Restaurant. Surviving are a daughter, Bryana McCorkie; two sisters, Doris (Julius) Clark and Audrey Hickman of Winston-Salem; nieces, including a special niece, Christie, Monica, Aisha and Tayla of Winston-Salem; nephews Kierre and Darren of Winston-Salem; great-nieces Jamilia, Monique and Destiny; great-nephew Trenton; a special cousin, Mike Hickman; and a host of uncles, aunts, cousins and other relatives. Funeral services will be held 3 p. m. Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, at Douthit’s Visitation Center, 2920 Greenway Ave. with Evangelist Parthenia Galloway officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service, from 2:30 to 3 p.m. at Douthit’s Visitation Center. The family may be contacted and funeral cortege will assemble and leave from the home of a sister, Doris (Julius) Clark, 410 E. 33rd St. Arrangements entrusted to Douthit Funeral Services. KING — Mr. Grady C. Hooker, 70, of Tom Smith Road, Westfield died at his home Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001. He was born July 13, 1930, in Surry County to Arlis and Sadie Jessup Hooker. Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Tracie Stewart Hooker of the home; two daughters, Nancy Hooker Mulwee (Charles) Draughn of Siloam and Sue Hooker Sutphin of King; four grandchildren, Michelle Mulwee Carter, Michael Shane Mulwee, Brian Christopher and Gregory Allen Sutphin; six great-grandchildren; four sisters, Earlene (A.G.) Watson of Greensboro, Doris (Billy) Easter, Vernona Mabe and Mildred Bennett, all of Mount Airy; and four brothers, Roger (Margie) Hooker of Martinsville, Va., Cleotha Hooker of Mount Airy, Stewart (Bonnie) Hooker and Larry Hooker of Westfield. He was preceded in death by a brother, Edward Hooker. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, at Slate Funeral Home in King with the Rev. John T. Byerly and the Rev. Lewis Martin officiating. Burial will follow in the Brown Mountain Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 this evening at the funeral home and other times at his home.

JAMES

LEXINGTON — Frances Pricilla Jordan '`Fran’‘ James, 68, of 1375 Old Mill Farm Road died Jan. 31, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center, Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Piedmont Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Dr. Stephen Martin. Burial will be in Good Hope United Methodist Church cemetery. Mrs. James was born Sept. 26, 1932, in Madison County, Tenn. to Warren Anderson and Mary Gladys Dennie Jordan and had lived in Davidson County most of her life. She formerly owned and operated Fran’s Beauty Salon and was of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her parents and a son, Bradley Charles King. Surviving are her husband, Chester C. James of the home; sisters Betty Joyce Jordan of Lexington and Shirley J. Martin of Thomasville; and brothers Charles K. Jordan and Raymond E. Jordan of Lexington. The family will be at Piedmont Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and other times at the residence. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.

JESSUP

MIDWAY — Iris Lee McCrary Jessup, 72, of Old Highway 52 died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, at her home after declining health. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 2, at Bethesda United Methodist Church, where she was a member. Dr. James White will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. She was born March 9, 1928, in Davidson County to Joseph Franklin McCrary and Mentie Kinney McCrary. She was a homemaker. Surviving are her twin son and daughter: son Walter Howard Jessup Jr. and his wife Delaney of Hickory; daughter Lisa Ann Jessup Woods and her husband Todd of Clemmons; five grandchildren, Clay Bradley Fillers of Charlotte, Todd Randall Woods Jr. of Boone, Michael David Smith of Raleigh, Andrew Thomas Smith and Nicholas Bradley Smith of Hickory; and sisters Ruth Deitz, Frances Townsend, Betty McCrary and Nancy McCrary all of Lexington and Peggy Freedle of Welcome. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Davidson Funeral Home – Hickory Tree Chapel and other times at the home. Memorials may be directed to Davidson County Cancer Services, 503 W. Center St., Lexington, NC 27292.

JOHNSON

KERNERSVILLE — Mr. Frank Dare Johnson, 69, died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, at High Point Regional Hospital. He had been in declining health for several years. He was born Oct. 4, 1931, in Stokes County a son of Coy and Vernie Johnson. On May 27, 1949, he married Peggy Sue Bryant, who survives of the home. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Samuel Hoover Johnson. Also surviving are his son, Rodney O. Johnson and wife Kay; his brother, Coy Johnson Jr. and wife Eula Grey; two granddaughters, Kayla and Breanna; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial Service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller-Cain Funeral Home by the Rev. Sam Murphy. The family will be at the home of Mr. Johnson’s brother at 314 Linville Rd., Kernersville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 25086, Winston-Salem, NC 27114.

KIRKMAN

MOUNT AIRY Mr. Timothy Dale Kirkman, 38, of 220 Welcome Church Road died at Northern Hospital of Surry County early Tuesday morning, Jan. 30, 2001. Mr. Kirkman was born June 13, 1962, in Surry County to Madeline Pruitt Kirkman and the late Ellis Kirkman. Mr. Kirkman was of the Brethren faith. Surviving are his mother, Madeline P. Kirkman of the home; a sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Gary Doss of Mount Airy; a brother and sister-in-law, Gary and Lavonda Kirkman of Mount Airy; and a nephew, Justin Kirkman of Mount Airy. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, 2001 at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, con-ducted by the Rev. Marvin Wade and Elder J. C. Kirkman. Burial will follow in Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Thursday night at the funeral home. Flowers will be accepted.

KOZLOWSKI

Mr. Stanley John Kozlowski, 86, of the Brookridge Retirement Community, formerly of Chicago, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 30, at Forsyth Medical Center after a brief illness. Stan was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Army and was retired from the U.S. Postal Service. He was the beloved husband of Margaret Ellen Stallings Kozlowski and the father of Stanley John Kozlowski and wife Shirley of Houston, Texas. Also surviving are two fine grandsons, Mitchell Kozlowski of the U.S. Air Force and Matthew Kozlowski and wife Sandra of Houston, Texas, the parents of Stan’s dear great-granddaughter, Sierra. Also surviving are two brothers, Lenny Kozlowski and wife Jean of Lady Lake, Fla., and Ed Kozlowski and wife Virginia and a sister, Florence, all of Chicago. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel conducted by the Rev. Gordon Tyler Talton Jr. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ardmore Baptist Church, P.O. Box 5507, Winston-Salem, NC 27113; the Salvation Army, P.O. Box 1205, Winston-Salem, NC 27102-1205; or the charity of the donor’s choice.

LAWSON

MADISON — Mrs. Janet Griffin Lawson, 87, of 240 Oak Crest Drive died Wednesday, Jan. 31 2001. She retired after 34 years of teaching at Madison, Pine Hall and Sandy Ridge elementary schools. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 2, at Ellisboro Baptist Church cemetery. Arrangements by Colonial Funeral Home.

MARTIN

WALNUT COVE — John Edgar '`Chubby’‘ Martin, 86, died Wednesday at Stokes Reynolds Hospital in Danbury. Mr. Martin was born Aug. 24, 1914, in Patrick County, Va., to the late John Andy and Rosie Lee Heath Martin. He was a farmer and a member of Peters Creek Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jettie Lou Collins Martin, and two sons, Donnie Wayne Martin and Lonnie Martin. Survivors include daughters Ruby and husband William Noel Martin of Lawsonville, Shirley Ann Rom-inger of Walnut Cove, Dorothy and husband Frank Purdy of Walnut Cove and Sue Ellen (Susan) Martin Gattalaro and husband Don of Winston-Salem; sons Ronnie Ray Martin and wife Barbara of Walnut Cove and Jonnie Darell Martin of Winston-Salem; and numerous grand-children and great-grand-children. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Burroughs Funeral Home, with the Rev. Joe Shockley, the Rev. Ralph Mitchell and the Rev. Eugene Payne officiating. Burial will be in the Martin Family cemetery in Stuart, Va. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Thursday evening at the funeral home.

MARTIN

Viola Beavers Martin, the widow of Charles I. Martin, departed this life Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, after an extended stay at the Meadowbrook Terrace Assisted Living facility in Winston-Salem. Mrs. Martin, one of nine children born to Jefferson Franklin and Idella Arnold Beavers, was born in College Park, Ga., on Sept. 11, 1908. After completing her undergraduate studies, she moved to North Carolina in order to accept her first teaching position. Returning home to Atlanta, after five years as a teacher in North Carolina, she attended and graduated from the Atlanta University School of Social Work. Receiving her master’s degree in social work, Mrs. Martin began her career as a social worker in Atlanta and continued that illustrious career of more than 21 years as a social worker in the Family Service Agency in Winston Salem as a child-welfare caseworker, with emphasis on securing foster homes and arranging for the adoption of more than 80 orphans, at one point, for whom she was responsible on a daily basis. She dearly loved children, even though she was not blessed with any of her own. One of her favorite Biblical verses was Psalm 113:9: He maketh the barren woman to keep house, and to be a joyful Mother of children. Praise ye the Lord. In 1996, after retirement as an agency social worker, Mrs. Martin served, as a result of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s '`Great Society Plan,’‘ in the capacity of school social worker for six additional years with the school system, which again involved working with children. Mrs. Martin also served as a public member on the North Carolina State Board of Examiners in Optometry and was a loyal supporter of the Republican Party. Religious service included more than 50 years of service as a dutiful member of St. Stephens Episcopal Church at 810 N. Highland Ave., during which time she served as president of Episcopal Church Women and as a faithful wife of one of the senior wardens. Leaving to cherish her memories are a sister, Ola M. Beavers Thurston of Winston-Salem and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. The family requests that either flowers or memorial gifts be sent to St. Stephens Episcopal Church. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3 at the St. Stephens Episcopal Church, with the Rev. William Pilcher officiating. Interment will be in the Evergreen cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 7 Friday evening at Hooper Funeral Home. (Hooper)

OEHMAN

ADVANCE — Mr. Garland Edward Oehman, 81, of Shady Lane died Tuesday evening at Forsyth Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel. Burial will be in Bethania Moravian Church Graveyard. Mr. Oehman was born in Forsyth County on Nov. 12, 1919, the son of Herman Eugene and Addie Mae Spainhour Oehman. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean conflict and retired from the U.S. Postal Service. Mr. Oehman was a member of Hope Baptist Church, was an avid bowler and worked for many years with the Boy Scouts. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen O. Oehman in 1981. Surviving are his wife, Jerry Tuttle Bailey Oehman of the home; a daughter, Carol Ann Brown of Pfafftown; a son, Daniel E. Oehman and wife Emma Jea n of King; a stepson, Delbert Bailey of Advance; two stepdaughters, Teresa Holt and husband Gary of Advance and Cindy Benson and husband Robin of Mocksville; six grandchildren, Karen Cearbaugh, David Brown, Christopher Oehman, Jamey Holt, Brittany Holt and Palmer Benson; two great-grandchildren, Calli Oehman and Landon Oehman; two sisters, Mabel Tuttle of Clemmons and Catherine Canter of Pfafftown; and a brother, Bruce Oehman of Illinois. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel. They send a special thanks to Dr. Charles S. Stinson and the staff of the fifth floor at Forsyth Medical Center for the care they provided Mr. Oehman. Any memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

PARSONS

YADKINVILLE — Miss Ruth Alzena Parsons, 74, of Yadkinville died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, at Britthaven of Wilkesboro. Miss Parsons was born in Ashe County on June 25, 1926, to the late Heg and Vena Miller Parsons and was a member of Obids Baptist Church in Ashe County. She was a secretary at Ferrell Realty Co. in Winston-Salem for 45 years. During her long illness she often expressed her appreciation for the excellent care given her by the physicians, nurses and staff at the WFU/Baptist Medical Center and Paul Sticht Rehabilitation Center. The family wishes to express their thanks to the personnel at Britthaven of Wilkesboro and Hospice of Alexander County for their care-giving services. Also preceding her in death were three sisters and two brothers. Surviving are her son, Barry Parsons of Winston-Salem; two brothers, Jones W. (Paralea) Parsons of China Grove and James F. Parsons of Yadkinville; a sister-in-law, Ella Parsons of Yadkinville; several nieces and nephews, grandnieces and nephews; and many former co-workers and other friends. Funeral services will be at 12:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel conducted by her grandnephew, the Rev. Jeffrey Severt. Graveside services will be 3:30 p.m. at Obids Baptist Church, West Jefferson. Assisting Rev. Severt in the graveside service will be the Rev. Tom Graybeal. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Thursday night at the funeral home. They request that memorials be made to Obids Baptist Church cemetery Fund, 1325 Old Obids Road, West Jefferson, NC 28694, or to the Hospice of your choice.
