LONG

BOONVILLE - The Rev. Clayton Ried Long, 84, of Center Road passed away Thursday March 8, 2001, at the North Carolina Baptist Hospital. He was born June 19, 1916, in Yadkin County to the late Jim and Victoria Pinnix Long. Mr. Long was a graduate of Holmes Bible College in Greenville, S.C., and was a member of Longtown Pentecostal Holiness Church and the Western North Carolina Pentecostal Holiness Conference for 70 years. Rev. Long was a missionary to the Cherokee Indians and helped organize the Cherokee Indian Pentecostal Holiness Church with his wife, Vera Whitaker Long, who preceded him in death on Jan. 13, 1997. After his ministry with the Cherokee Indians, he pastored at Pentecostal Holiness churches in West Marion; South Marion; Jacksonville, Fla.; Irwin, Tenn.; Dayton, Tenn.; Mount Airy; and Greensboro. After his retirement, he loved his garden and growing produce for the community. Rev. Long was also preceded in death by a daughter, Myrtle Kay Dunn on Oct. 6, 1970; two brothers, Gene Long and Buck Long; and two sisters, Opal Long and Ozelle Long Mathis. Surviving are his second wife, Ruby Redding Long of the home; two sons, Bobby Kent (Barbara Crater) Long and Jim (Sharon Wagoner) Long, all of Yadkinville; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Magdalene Willard and Arnette (Thad) Branon of Yadkinville; two sisters-in-law, Lydia Underwood Brendle and Sally Ragan; and a brother-in-law, Carl Underwood. Rev. Long's funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Saturday at Longtown Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. Mike Allen and the conference superintendent, the Rev. Thomas H. McGhee. He will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in the Longtown cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Gentry Family Funeral Service, Highway 601 N., Yadkinville. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the Women's Ministry of Longtown Pentecostal Holiness Church, Longtown Road, Yadkinville, NC 27055.

MCCARTHY

HAMPTONVILLE - Mrs. Leah Margaret McCarthy, 86, formerly of Winston-Salem, passed away Thursday March 8, 2001, at Yadkin Nursing Center. She was born Feb. 26, 1915, in Pennsylvania to the late Wellington and Daisy Hoffman Girton. Mrs. McCarthy was a homemaker and was of the Lutheran faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Anthony McCarthy, in 1993. Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, John and Patty McCarthy of Hamptonville; three grandchildren, Patricia Stutts, Susan Bonanno and Michael McCarthy; and a great-grandchild, Jacob Stutts. Her funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at the Gentry Family Chapel by the Rev. Daniel Outen. Burial will follow in Yadkin Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Gentry Family Funeral Service, Highway 601 N., Yadkinville.

MCCHESNEY

WEST JEFFERSON - Mr. Kenneth Howard McChesney, 78, died Wednesday, March 7, 2001, at his home. Mr. McChesney was born Nov. 1, 1922, in Glenada, Ore. To Glen and Eva Annis McChesney. He was a graduate of the University of Nebraska and received a master's degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He also did postgraduate study at UNC Chapel Hill. Mr. McChesney was a retired Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Air Force. He enlisted in service on June 3, 1942, and received his commission after aviation cadet training on Nov. 13, 1943. During World War II, he served in the European Theater of Operation on B-17 combat crew. He completed 27 combat missions from May 1944 to October 1944. He also served overseas in Alaska and in Japan. Following his military retirement in 1965, he pursued a career as an educator. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, March 10, 2001, at the Jefferson United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bob Miller officiating. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens with full military rites. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, March 9, 2001, at Badger Funeral Home. Mr. McChesney is survived by his wife, Jeanne Snow McChesney; three daughters, Pat Domingue of San Francisco, Calif., JoAnne Harvin of Columbia, S.C. and Susan Atkins of Memphis, Tenn.; three sons, Frank Stokes of McLeansville, Bill Stokes of Boone and John Stokes of Athens, Ga.; a brother, Glenn McChesney of Springfield, Ore.; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. MILHOLEN

HAMPTONVILLE - Mrs. Lucy Adams Milholen, the widow of Woodrow Milholen, of 3348 Arnold Road passed away March 7, 2001, at Hoots Memorial Hospital. She was born July 19, 1918, to Charlie and Ellen Ladd Adams in Yadkin County. She was the oldest member of Hanes Grove Methodist Church, serving on the church board and as stewardess for Holy Communion for many years. She worked at Monleigh Garment Co. as a supervisor of the pressing department at Harmony Manufacturing. Surviving are three children; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild: a son, Floyd (Betty) Milholand; a daughter, Shelby (Rodney) Oliver, both of Hamptonville; a daughter, Eleanor (A.V.) Phillips of East Bend, with whom she has made her home with since November 1998; Floyd's children, "Lester" (Nancy) and Candy and Shane Childress, "Danny" (Patty) Kim and Jeff Holder and baby Keegan Alexis of Alaska, Ashley and Daniel, "Stevie", "Jimmy" (Carol) Christine and Scottie, "Sherry" (Dale) Gibson, "David" (Amy) Ryan and Alesha, "Lisa" (Steve) Webster and Tiffany and Joshua of Montana; Shelby's children, "Mike" (Tammy) Shore and Eric, Rachael and Katie, "Brenda" (Marvin) Mercer, Dakota and Blaine of Concord, "Glenda" (Bodie) Wingler and Victoria, Alexandria and Olivia, "Justin Phillips"; a sister, Mary Hall of Elkin; sisters-in-law Helen Adams of Hamptonville, Mary Messick Adams of Mocksville, Lena M. Prevette of Fayetteville, H.L. and Virginia Milholen of Hampton, Va., and Ann Milholen of Bethesda, Md. She was preceded in death by brothers Glen, Early, Tom and Reuben Adams; sister Bessie A. PATTERSON

CHINA GROVE - Mrs. Suma Verona Isenhour Patterson, 96, formerly of Old Beatty Ford Road died March 6, 2001, at Deal Care Inn, Mooresville after several years of declining health. Mrs. Patterson was born July 7, 1904, in Alexander County to the late Martin Preston Isenhour and Lessie Mae Payne Isenhour. She was a charter member of the North Kannapolis Baptist Church and the Blackwelder Park Baptist Church. Mrs. Patterson was a Sunday school teacher for many years and a member of the Just Older Youth "JOY" group of Blackwelder Park Baptist Church. She loved to grow flowers and work in her yard and garden. She was a devoted wife and mother. Mrs. Patterson was an employee of Cannon Mills for 43 years in the shipping and packing department, retiring in 1980. She was educated in Alexander County schools and moved here in 1925. Mrs. Patterson was preceded in death by her husband, T.R. Patterson, who died in 1983. Surviving are a son, Floyd Patterson of China Grove; a daughter, Margaret Barnette of China Grove; a brother, Thad Isenhour of Taylorsville; four sisters, Mamie Capps of Sumpter, S.C., Edith Keever of Taylorsville, Bonnie Warren of Stony Point and Gay Nell Dormstadt of Charlotte; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, March 9, 2001, at the Blackwelder Park Baptist Church with the Rev. Stanley Welch and Dr. James Strickland officiating. PIERCE

KING - Mrs. Sandra Fletcher Pierce, 57, of 504 Spainhour Road died unexpectedly Wednesday evening, March 7, 2001, at J. R. Jones Medical Center in King. Mrs. Pierce was born in Forsyth County on Aug. 28, 1943, the daughter of the late Evelyn Wishon Fletcher. She was an employee at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem with more than 25 years of service. Surviving are three daughters, Teri P. Voss and husband Lawrence, DeeDee Myers and husband Alan, all of King, and Risti Joyce and husband Robert of Rural Hall; a son, Tal Pierce and wife Yolanda of Pfafftown; seven grandchildren who loved their Ma Maws cooking; a sister, Shelia Helms of Arizona; two brothers, Gerry "Dickie" Fletcher of Winston-Salem and Thomas "Stormy" Helms of Arizona; several nieces and nephews including Shane, Shawn and Shad; and her loving best friend, Jeri Seivers of King. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 10, 2001, at Crestview Memorial Park in Rural Hall by Chaplain Randy Hillman. The Pierce family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p. m. Friday evening at Hayworth-Miller Chapel in Rural Hall and request that memorials be directed to Brenner Children's Hospital, Medical Center Boulevard, Winston-Salem, NC 27157.

ROGERS

Mrs. Mary Virginia Harrell Rogers, 83, of Village Care in King died Wednesday, March 7, 2001. Mrs. Rogers was born in Holland, Va., on April 25, 1917, to Edward and Odia Otelia Howell Harrell. She spent all of her life in Forsyth County. Mrs. Rogers was a member of Woodland Baptist Church and the Faithful Followers Sunday-school class. She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Rogers. She is survived by several family members and friends. A reception for family and friends will be held from 1 to 1:30 p.m. Friday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel. A graveside service will follow at 2 p.m. at Beck's Baptist Church, with the Rev. SMITH

GREENSBORO - Mr. Ronald Wayne Smith, 52, of 7721 Stonewood Drive departed this world March 6, 2001, to be with his Lord and Savior. He has taken to the big racetrack in the sky. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Hanes-Lineberry Vanstory Street Chapel. Ron worked at Pine State Tool as a CNC programmer. He enjoyed his gospel music, such as the Bill Gaither group and others. Ron and Trisha spent many a happy weekend at the dirt-track races. He loved his family dearly and he will be sorely missed. He is survived by his loving wife, Patricia "Trisha" Smith of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, William "Billy" Lee Smith and Julie Smith of Ramseur; a daughter and son-in-law, Brandy Smith Edwards and Tim Edwards of Archdale; stepdaughter Gwendolyn "Wendy" Simpson Thompson and her husband Stephen Thompson of Stokesdale; his parents, William and Peggy Smith of Greensboro; a sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Cecil Hill of Greensboro; and sister Vicky Smith of Baton Rouge, La. Ron is also survived by his two grandchildren, Teresa and Dylan. TROXELL

Marcus Lee Troxell, M.D., 47, of Grand Junction, Colo., formerly of Charlotte, died at his home March 4, 2001. He was born in Baltimore, Md., to Charlotte Wilson Troxell and L. Ray Troxell. Dr. Troxell graduated cum laude from Duke University and received his medical degree from Wake Forest University Medical School, where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine and his fellowship training in hematology/oncology at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. He served as chief of oncology services at Eisenhower Army Medical Center in Augusta, Ga., where he attained the rank of major. He received the Army Achievement Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal and the Army Service Ribbon during his eight years of active duty in the U.S. Army. He continued his medical career in private practice as an oncologist in Jackson, Tenn., Charlotte and Grand Junction, Colo. He was instrumental in developing the stem-cell trans-plant program at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. Dr. Troxell also served as volunteer medical director of the Jackson area Hospice Program and Hospice of Charlotte. He is survived by his wife, Kitty Rhyne Troxell; a stepdaughter, Lexi Taylor Sims; son Kevin Benton Troxell, daughter Erin Lindsay Troxell and their mother, Rebecca Benton Troxell, all of Charlotte; his parents, Charlotte and Ray Troxell; sister Amy Troxell Walton; and brother Kyle Evan Troxell all of Winston-Salem He was pre-ceded in death by his brother, Bruce Graham Troxell. A memorial service for family, friends and colleagues will be held at 3 p.m. March 11, 2001, at Idlewild Baptist Church, 12701 Idlewild Road, Matthews, N.C. A private inurnment service will be held for family members at Forsyth Memorial Park, Winston-Salem, on March 25, 2001. Memorials may be made to the Leukemia Society and Hospice of Charlotte and in Winston-Salem, the Summit School, Hospice of Forsyth County or the Winston-Salem Foundation Inc.

WADSWORTH

BOONE - Dr. Erwing Winningham "E.W." Wadsworth, 83, died peacefully Saturday, March 3, 2001, at his home, Autumn Leaves, in Boone with his wife, children and grandchildren at his side. He was born Dec. 3, 1917, in Tallassee, Ala., to the late Lucious Alonza and Ada Winningham Wadsworth. Dr. Wadsworth graduated with Phi Beta Kappa honors from Troy State University in 1939 and then continued his education at Auburn University, completing his master's of science degree and doctorate degree. Dr. Wadsworth remained an avid Auburn football fan all of his life. Dr. Wadsworth served in the military during World War II, volunteering for Aviation Cadet Training and later serving with the Eastern Technical Training Command and Flight Operations Third Air Force. He was honorably discharged in April 1946. Dr. Wadsworth taught in Montgomery and Tuskegee, Ala., where he served as principal of Tuskegee schools from 1951 to 1964, maintaining that position during the difficult period of federally mandated integration, and the ordered closing of the school by then-Alabama Gov. George Wallace in 1964. He then moved on to serve as principal of Coffee High School in Florence, Ala., and later assistant superintendent of the Florence City Schools. In 1968 Dr. Wadsworth joined the faculty of Appalachian State University in Boone where he taught undergraduate and graduate classes until his retirement in 1988, achieving the rank of professor emeritus. During his years at ASU, he served as president of the Appalachian chapter of NCAE, president and charter member of Kappa Delta and Phi Kappa Phi, as well as president of Phi Delta Kappa. In addition to various other teaching responsibilities, he was well-known at many Western North Carolina schools, supervising student teachers, one of his favorite job responsibilities in the department of secondary education. After retiring, Dr. Wadsworth enjoyed being a loving grandfather and he continued writing for numerous historical publications, both locally and regionally. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Ann Stewart Wadsworth; his daughter, Ann Wadsworth Reish and her husband Andrew Reish of Washington, D.C.; and his daughter, Cynthia Hardy Wadsworth-Thomason and her husband Shelton William "Tony" Wadsworth-Thomason of Blowing Rock. His adoring grandchildren also survive him: Andrew "Ande" George-Erwing Wadsworth-Reish, a sophomore at Duke University, Sarah Kathryn Wadsworth-Thomason and Tyler Liam Wadsworth-Thomason, both students at Blowing Rock School. Three sisters, Velma, Verma and Vivian, and a grandson, Chase William Wadsworth-Thomason preceded him in death. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, March 10, at the Boone United Methodist Church, with services in the church sanctuary at 11 a.m. Music will be provided by the Wadsworth-Thomason family and by soloists Sarah Kathryn Wadsworth-Thomason and Conley Elizabeth Lyons. military graveside rites and burial will be in Mount Lawn cemetery in Boone. ARMSTRONG

Mr. William Franklin "Bill" "Frankie" Armstrong, 75, of Winston-Salem, passed away at his home Saturday, March 10, 2001. Mr. Armstrong was born in Matagorda, Texas, Dec. 19, 1925, to C.W. Eddie and Mattie Simpson Armstrong. Mr. Armstrong was a member of Augsburg Lutheran Church, a member of Masonic Lodge # 680 in Jacksonville as well as a member of Charlotte Oasis Shriners Temple and a member of the Huntington, W.Va., V.F.W. Mr. Armstrong was retired from the United States Navy with the rank of Chief Hospital Corpsman; he served his country from March 1942 to August 1964. He then went to work for Knollwood Hall Nursing Home in 1964 as administrator. He then went to Presbyterian Manor Nursing Home in Huntington as administrator until his retirement in 1989. Survivors include his loving wife of 29 years, Phyllis S. Armstrong of the home; two sons, Mr. Tom Armstrong and wife Peggy of Alpharetta, Ga., and Mr. James Armstrong of Huntsville, Ala.; stepsons Mr. Brad O'Dale Smith and Mr. Alan Andrew Smith, both of Winston-Salem; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; a grandchild whom he considered as his own son, Mr. Bradley O'Dale Smith of Winston-Salem; and sister Mrs. Anne Blanton of Texas. A funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 13, 2001, at Northwoods Baptist Church, with the Rev. James Thompson officiating. The body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow at Gardens of Memory, with full military honors provided by Inspector Instructor Staff of the U.S. Marine Corps, and Masonic Rites will be performed as well. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Monday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.

BOOSE

Mrs. Margaret Hensley Boose, 94, died Friday, March 9, 2001, at Silas Creek Manor. She was born July 31, 1906, in Bedford County, Va., to William and Mary Davis Hensley. Mrs. Boose was a member of Wachovia Arbor Moravian Church. Preceding her in death were her husband, Fred T. Boose, and her son Stephen Boose. Survivors include her son Thomas Boose of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, Lorain Boose and Thomas Boose; one great-grandson, Michael Anthony Boose; one brother, Lloyd Hensley of Tomball, Texas; one sister, Frances Phillips of Baltimore, Md.; and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at the Wachovia Arbor Moravian Graveyard, 2 p.m. Monday, March 12, 2001, with Mr. Patrick Winfree officiating.

COOK

CLEMMONS - Mrs. Nellie "Nell" Elizabeth Cook, 77, a devoted wife, mother and grandmother of Clemmons was called home Friday, March 9, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born in Kannapolis on May 21, 1923, to J.W. and Clara Corn Cashion. She was a member of Clemmons First Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school and was director and Bible study leader of WMU. She served on the board of the Christian Women's Club and was a charter member of the Eastern Star in Clemmons. She was preceded in death by her husband J. Frank Cook Sr., her parents and one brother, Ernest Cashion. Surviving are one daughter, Jane Cook Harris and husband Patrick of Clemmons; two sons, James "Jim" F. Cook Jr. and wife Jane Carroll of Concord, and David W. Cook and wife Cassie of East Bend; six grandsons and two granddaughters; one brother, Howard Cashion and wife R.V. of Kannapolis; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 14, 2001, at Clemmons First Baptist Church, by the Rev. Samuel Murphy. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. CROUSE

RURAL HALL - Mrs. Pamela Lynn Bowen Crouse, 40, died at her home March 7, 2001. A native of Fairfax County, Va., she was born May 29, 1960, to Charlie Roy and Wanda Goforth Bowen. Mrs. Crouse was a member of Mizpah Moravian Church in Rural Hall. She was a 1978 graduate of North Forsyth High School and was a 1983 graduate of the UNC Chapel Hill School of Nursing. She is survived by her husband of 17 years, Allen Crouse; three sons, Matthew, Andrew Tyler and Bradley Crouse, all of the home; her mother and stepfather, Wanda and Benny Davis of Columbus, Ohio; a sister and brother-in-law, Debbie and Paul Hazell of Columbus; her mother and father-in-law, Mareia and Jerry Crouse of Advance; two sisters-in-law, Michelle Crouse and Tonya Overby; also two nephews and one niece. A funeral service will be conducted at Mizpah Moravian Church at 11 a.m. today, March 12, 2001, officiated by the Rev. Hal Cole and the Rev. Jack T. Nance. Burial will follow in the church graveyard. DULL

MOCKSVILLE - Mrs. Coleen Howell Dull, 68, of NC Hwy 801 North died Saturday morning at Forsyth Medical Center. A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in Center United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dianne Marsden officiating. Interment will be in Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives on Wednesday at the church immediately following the service. They request memorials be considered for the Building Fund of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, c/o Mrs. Betty West, 3532 NC Hwy 801 North, Mocksville, NC 27028, or to the Research Fund of the American Cancer Society, 622 Forsyth Medical park, 1900 S. Mrs. Dull was born in Yadkin County, July 24, 1932, to the late Willie Sanford and Ellie Hollar Howell and was retired with, over 25 years of service, from AT&T. She was a longtime member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, where she was active with the United Methodist Women and served as their treasurer. She was also chairperson of the Church History Committee. She was a graduate of the Mocksville High School class of 1950. Mrs. Dull was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Vestal Dull, who died in 1976, and also by a sister, Maxine Hodgson. Surviving are her daughter Mrs. Buddy (Marcheta) Williams of Mocksville; one son, Vestal Wayne Dull, also of Mocksville; six grandchildren, Adam Hill and wife Haley, Emily Burroughs and husband Bart, Clark Williams and wife Kristy, Justin Dull, Ryan Dull and Brandy Rogers; two great-grandchildren, Tatum Williams and Kassidy Williams; four brothers, Harley Howell and wife Betty, Kenneth Howell and wife Julia, Gary Howell and wife Glenda, all of Mocksville, and Harry Lee Howell and wife Marlene of Harmony; and one brother-in-law, Richard Hodgson of Spring Lake. Mrs. Dull will always be remembered as a very devoted mother, grandmother and friend who enjoyed spending quality time with her family. Eaton Funeral Home is serving the family of Mrs. Dull.

ERDMAN

OAK RIDGE - Thelma Ruth Erdman, 86, died Sunday, March 11, 2001, at Moses H. Cone Hospital, Greensboro. She was born Jan. 7, 1915, at Grand Rapids, Mich., the daughter of Harry and Margaret Hull. Mrs. Erdman was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church of Kernersville. She is survived by her sons Michael Hull Erdman of Atlanta, Ga., and Robert J. Erdman II and his wife Deanna of Oak Ridge; her daughter Jeannie Marie Chomiak and husband Robert of Congers, N.Y.; 20 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren. A Mass of Resurrection will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 13, 2001, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Kernersville. The family will receive friends 1-2 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Arrangements are by Hanes-Lineberry Pierce Chapel, Kernersville.
