Mrs. Grace Borders Hayes, 82, of Winston-Salem, died February 7, 2001, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mrs. Hayes was born July 31, 1918 in Ebert County, Ga., to Clonda and Lona Ray Borders. She was married in York County, S.C., on Aug. 8, 1932, to Gene Hayes and was married for 68 years. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara H. Parks, three brothers and six sisters. Surviving are her husband, of the home; Two daughters, Mrs. Jean H. Mahaffey of Winston-Salem and Ms. Judy H. Stivers of Tucson, Ariz; five grandchildren, Chuck Mahaffey (wife Peggy), Marcia K. Mahaffey, and Christine P. Myers (husband Billy), all of Winston-Salem, Wayne Parks (wife Diana) of Piedmont, Okla., Andrew Stivers (wife Anne) of Atlanta, Ga; eight great-grandchildren, Lauren, Jonathan and Zachary Mahaffey, Brian and Daniel Myers, and Natalie, Kelly and Dakota Parks; two sisters, Mrs. Thelma Childs of Elberton, Ga., and Mrs. Nora Belle Bennett of Eden, N.C. A graveside service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001, at Parklawn Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Norwood Green officiating. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Winston-Salem 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem NC 27103. The family would like to give a special thanks to the staff at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, Hospice Home Care and to Dr. Barry W. Sigal. Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is serving the family.

LANGLEY

LINCOLNTON - Mrs. Sarah Pauline Langley, 73, died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, at Lincoln Medical Center in Lincolnton. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Hanes-Lineberry, Pierce Chapel in Kernersville. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Gardens of Memory. Mrs. Langley was the daughter of M.P. and Lydia Bunn. She was of the Baptist faith. She is survived by her husband, Archie Boyd Langley of Lincolnton; a son, Archie Lloyd Langley and wife, Jan of Maiden; a daughter, Toni Gale Helms and husband, Keith of Lincolnton; a sister, Margaret Marine of Winston-Salem; a brother, Lloyd Bunn of Altamahaw; three grandchildren; a step-grandchild and a great-grandchild. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home before the service.

LAWS

Mrs. Lula Mae Laws, 78, formerly of 2032 Piedmont Circle, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001, at the Forsyth Medical Center. She was a native of McCullers, born July 14, 1922, the daughter of the late David and Lula King Laws. She was a member of the New Jerusalem Baptist Church and was a retired employee of Walker's Cleaners. Family members to cherish her legacy: a sister, Lessie Lee Laws of Winston-Salem; a brother-in-law, William Henry Gwyn of Winston-Salem; two nieces, Letha Mae G. Lee (Charleston) of Germany; her children, Derek Lee of California and Dana Lee of Atlanta, Ga. and Constance G. Boone Manus (Luther) and her daughter, Alicia Boone of Erie, Pa.; a nephew, Willie Gwyn (Mary) and his son, C. Sterling Gwyn of Winston-Salem; faithful cousins, Hazel Phillips (Bradley) of Garner and Charles Denning and devoted wife, Michelle and their children, Charles Jr. and Charla of Winston-Salem; a special friend, Jackie Crawford of Winston-Salem and a host of other relatives and many friends. Funeral services will be held t noon Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001, from the New Jerusalem Baptist Church with the Rev. Samuel J. Cornelius officiating. Interment will be in the family plot of the Oak Spring Baptist Church cemetery in Stokesdale. The family visitation will be from 11:30 to noon at the church. The family may be contacted at 815 N. LINEBERRY

EAST BEND - Mrs. Ada Ellen Hicks Lineberry, 84, 2313 Binkley Road, passed away Thursday Feb. 8, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born in Stokes County to John William and Fannie Corrinna Sams Hicks. Mrs. Lineberry was a member of Mount Bethel Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Harvey and Paul Hicks, and a grandson, Johnny Lineberry. Surviving are her husband, John Frank Lineberry of the home; two sons, Steven Gray (Linda) Lineberry and Stanley Ray (Dusty) Lineberry both of East Bend; two sisters, Mary Lineberry of Shoals and Ethel Starbuck of Pinnacle; two brothers, John Henry (Mabel) Hicks and Frank (Inez) Hicks both of Pinnacle; five grandchildren, Kimberly Davis, Dawn Doss, Amber Lineberry, Conrad Lineberry, and Chad Lineberry; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Sunday Feb. 11, 2001, at the Huff Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Ottis Hurst and the Rev. Jerry Atkins. Burial will follow in the Mount Bethel Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Saturday evening at Huff Funeral Home in East Bend. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

McNATT

Mr. Charles Daniel McNatt, 82, a resident of Winston-Salem for the past 54 years died Feb. 8, 2001. He was born March 17, 1918, in Parkton, the youngest of eight children born to Mary Hancock McNatt and J.C. Dobbin McNatt. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and served his country honorably during World War II in the Philippines and New Guinea. After World War II he worked for the Veterans Administration, taught school at Mineral Springs High School and was appointed veteran service officer for Forsyth County in 1965, retiring from that position in 1983. He proudly served his community in numerous volunteer activities including the United Way, March of Dimes, American Legion, Neighborhood Watch and Meals on Wheels. He served as president of Old Town Civic Club where he raised over $25,000 for the Craig Deal Kidney Transplant Fund. His efforts culminated in the forming of the Winston-Salem Kidney Foundation and he served as its first president. He was also a charter member of Forsyth County's chapter of the Lupus Foundation. He was an active member of First Presbyterian Church for over 50 years where he served as deacon, elder and Sunday school teacher. Until his death, he served as the treasurer of the Neal Anderson Bible class where he established the Robert Lake Scholarship Fund for Presbyterian students attending Presbyterian seminaries. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Madeleine Byrum McNatt; two sons, Charles Milton McNatt and wife, Trudy Brown McNatt of Fredericksburg, Va. and James Daniel McNatt and wife, Donna Dragon McNatt of Winston-Salem and four grandchildren, Heather Lynn McNatt of Charlotte, Regan Allison McNatt of Raleigh, James Daniel McNatt Jr. and Alexandra Margaret McNatt, both of Winston-Salem. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Feb. 11 at Voglers Funeral Home, Reynolda Road, Winston-Salem. A military graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 12 at Forsyth Memorial Park. A memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church conducted by Dr. Jeff White, Dr. Russell H. Ritchel Jr. and the Rev. Donna McClellan. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Robert Lake Scholarship Fund and mailed to First Presbyterian Church.

PEARRE

Mrs. Helen Louise Lawrence Pearre, 85, formerly of Charlotte and Wilmington, died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001, in Winston-Salem. She is survived by four children, Howard (and Kathy) Pearre of Winston-Salem, Robert (and Lisa) Pearre of Jacksonville, Fla., Susan Pearre Holt of Columbia, S.C., and Louise Pearre of Milwaukie, Ore.; 10 grandchildren, Amy, David, Abigail, Jennifer, Robert Jr., Christine, Nicholas, Patrick, Helen and Victor; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, John (and Gladys) Lawrence and Robert (and Lucille) Lawrence, all of Asheville; and many nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank the many kind care givers at Plantation Village and Champions Assisted Living in Wilmington, and Arbor Acres Fitzgerald Health Care, Forsyth Medical Center and Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. A graveside service will be held in Charlotte at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Kate B. WALKERTOWN - Mr. Ronald Warren Powell, 54, of Cain Forest Drive died at his residence. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Hanes-Lineberry, Pierce Chapel in Kernersville.

SHIPLEY

Mr. Jerry Wayne Shipley, 50, of Farris Road, Winston-Salem passed away Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Mr. Shipley was born Jan. 1, 1951, in Forsyth County to the late James H. and Harriet Spaugh Shipley Sr. Mr. Shipley was of the Baptist faith. Mr. Shipley is survived by a brother, Jimmy H. Shipley and wife Nancy of Westfield; a sister, Debra McDaniel of Winston-Salem; a niece, Kara McDaniel and a nephew, Matthew McDaniel of Mocksville; and a great-aunt, Bertha Faw. A memorial service will be 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 11, 2001, at Davie Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Norman Frye officiating. Davie Funeral Service, LLC Valley Road, Mocksville 27028 will be serving the Shipley family.

WOODLE

ELKIN -- Mrs. Verlie Royal Woodle, 95, of Elkin, died Friday Feb. 9, 2001, at Elkin Health Care. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. at Kennedy Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Kenneth Wood and Rev. Woodrow Wishon. Burial will be in Pleasant View Baptist Church cemetery. Mrs. Woodle was born Feb. 23, 1905, to Frances Marion and Flora Brooks Royal. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ransom Woodle in 1986. Surviving are five daughters, Ethel Nichols, Eva Blankenship, Dicie Franklin both of Columbia, S.C., Stella Roberts of Jonesville, Allie Walker of State Road; four sons, Clyde Woodle of Elkin, Boyd Woodle of Roaring River, Conard Woodle of Hamptonville, Doughton Woodle of Elkin; 24 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren and a brother, Herman Royal of Elkin. The family will receive friends Saturday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Kennedy Funeral Home in Elkin.

BRADLEY

Mr. Troy Bradley Jr. (aka Bunk) passed at Forsyth Medical Center Monday morning, Feb. 5, 2001. He was a retired employee of RJR Tobacco Co. Factory #12. He was a member of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict. Mr. Bradley served on the board of deacons and was also an ordained deacon by the Rev. W.E. Samuels at Mars Hill Baptist Church. He was one of the founders of Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as chairman of the deacon board for 16 years. He also served as Sunday school teacher and director of the Baptist Training Union at Mars Hill Baptist Church. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving and devoted wife of 45 1/2 years, Mrs. Queen Bradley of the home; two daughters, Yvonne (Robert) Bradley Glenn of Winston-Salem and Anna Bradley (Bonnie) Hauser; a son, Bobby L. (Evette) Bradley; mother, Anna Johnson of Philadelphia, Pa.; three sisters, Fannie Brigham, Gwendolyn Lash and Lula (Dennis) Scott of Philadelphia, Pa.; two grandchildren, Christchon Bradley, whom he raised, and Robert Jamal Glenn, both of Winston-Salem; two great-granddaughters, Michelle House of Winston-Salem and Kristin Bradley of Yonkers, N.Y.; a devoted goddaughter, Jacqueline Cooper of Winston-Salem; three godchildren, Javon Cooper, Lavon Cooper and Ronald Couthren Jr.; a sister-in-law, Joeretha Love of Greensboro; devoted friends, Oscar and Mildred McCall of Winston-Salem; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services for Mr. Bradley will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001, at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church. The Rev. John Parks will be officiating. He will be placed at the church at 12:30 p.m. Visitation will be from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Arrangements are entrusted to Gilmore Funeral Home.

CHAFFIN

MOCKSVILLE - Mr. Abner Morgan Chaffin, 63, of Sheffield Road was born into eternal life Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Ijames Baptist Church with the Rev. Tommy Faust, the Rev. Franklin Myers and the Rev. John Parks and Dr. Joe K. Woodward officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. The family will be at Eaton Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. They request memorials be considered for Ijames Baptist Church cemetery Fund, 477 Sheffield Road, Mocksville, NC 27028. Mr. Chaffin was born Dec. 25, 1937, in Davie County to the late Stacy H. and Inez Ijames Chaffin. He was retired from Hoechst-Celanese and also was a retired tobacco farmer. He graduated from Mocksville High School, where he was known as a very talented basketball player. He was an avid gardener, deer hunter, fisherman and outdoorsman. He was a member of Ijames Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Faye Smith Chaffin in 1985 and a sister, Eloise Chaffin Stephens. Survivors include a daughter, Kathy Chaffin of Mocksville; two sons, Dr. Morgan Keith Chaffin of College Station, Texas and Bryan K. Chaffin of Mocksville; a grandchild, Amanda Faye Chaffin; six brothers and sisters, Norman S. Chaffin of Advance, Edwin Dale Chaffin of Mocksville, Doris Chaffin Kurfees of Harmony, Thurmond Odus Chaffin of Welaka, Fla., Gary Ijames Chaffin of Winston-Salem and Bonnie Chaffin Gunter of Harmony; and a longtime friend, Mary B. Waller of Statesville.

CRISSMAN

A memorial service celebrating the life of Elizabeth "Betty" Sharpe Crissman will be held 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. Lisa Wishon officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. Mrs. Crissman, died Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001, at Yadkin Nursing Care Center. She was born January 18, 1907, in Hamlet, N.C., to McRobbins and Blanche Ellis Sharpe. She was a longtime resident of Winston-Salem and a lifelong member of the Ardmore United Methodist Church, where she remained active in the Alma Numm Class by telephone after she was unable to attend physically. Mrs. Crissman was a Vanda Beauty Counselor distributor and belonged to several clubs. She was preceded in death by her husband, David A. Crissman, and two grandchildren, David Kenton Marshall and Ellen Carol Crissman. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, David and JoAnne Crissman of Tucker, Ga.; a daughter, Diane Marshall of Yadkinville; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. DOUTHIT

Mr. Willie Edward Douthit Sr., aka Sonny, of 2330 Marble St. passed away Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was a lifelong resident of Winston-Salem and attended Bethlehem Baptist Church. He is survived by two sons, Willie E. Douthit Jr. and Wilford Douthit, both of Winston-Salem; a sister, Brenda Douthit; three brothers, Elmo T. (Patricia), James (Glenda) and Bobby Douthit, all of Winston-Salem; an aunt, Rose Lee Douthit of Philadelphia, Pa.; and several other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001, from Douthit Visitation Center, 2920 Greenway Ave., where the Rev. Daryl Scott will officiate, and interment will follow in the Piney Grove United Methodist Church cemetery in Advance. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service, from 1 to 1:30 p.m., Saturday at Douthit's Visitation Center. The remains may be viewed Saturday at 11 a.m. at the visitation center. FEWELL

Donald W. Fewell, 73, of Independence, Ky., formerly of Winston-Salem, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, at Saint Luke West Hospital in Florence, Ky. He was a retired vice president of the American Institute of Management Services (AIMS) in Winston-Salem. He was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Church in Winston-Salem. Mr. Fewell was preceded in death by a son, Kevin P. Fewell, and a grandson, Steven M. Fewell. Survivors include his wife, Ruth Ann Fewell; sons Steven (Jada) Fewell of Middletown, Ohio, and Mark (Beth) Fewell of Cincinnati, Ohio; daughters Eileen (Larry) Miller of West Chester, Ohio, and Bridgett (Robert) Brashear of Fort Thomas, Ky.; sisters, Joyce Gripshover and Kay Fewell of northern Kentucky; brothers, Dale Fewell of northern Kentucky and Gary Fewell and Paul Steubbers, both of Cincinnati, Ohio; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. GABRIEL

Martha "Marty" Elizabeth Gabriel, 48, formerly of 2463 Westfield Ave., died peacefully Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001, at the Hospicare residence in Ithaca, N.Y. Born March 12, 1952, to Margaret and the late Robert Gabriel Sr. ,Marty spent the bulk of her childhood in Winston-Salem. She graduated with a bachelor of science degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1974. Shortly thereafter, she began her professional career in the travel industry spanning more than 25 years. In 1993, Marty went to work as a corporate agent for Stone Travel in Ithaca and became part of a remarkable family. Throughout her life, Marty gave her entire self to others. Her greatest accomplishments are immeasurable. She was an incredible mother, compassionate daughter and sister, generous and loyal friend and a beautiful woman. She had more joyous gifts to give than time would allow, but she will live in all those she touched. Marty is survived by her mother Margaret of Winston-Salem; daughter Elizabeth Crumley of Ithaca, N.Y.; a dear companion, Edgar Boisvert of Ithaca, N.Y.; two brothers, Robert Gabriel Jr. of Richmond, Va., and Joel Gabriel of Winston-Salem; nieces Jenna and Brittany; nephews Jacob, Jason and Jeremy; loyal canine son Puck; and countless friends. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Monday, Feb. 12, 2001, at Immaculate Conception Church in Ithaca, N.Y. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to Hospicare of Ithaca (172 E. King Road, Ithaca, NY 14850), the American Cancer Society, or a charity of the donor's choice.

GEANIOUS

KING - Mr. James (Jim) Geanious, 81, devoted husband, father and grandfather, died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He was born Oct. 15, 1919, in Martinsburg, W. Va., to Peter and Villa Lemons Geanious. Jim entered the U.S. Army Air Corps on Nov. 6, 1940, and saw action during World War II, flying 30 missions over Europe. He later served in the Korean Conflict. He held the rank of technical sergeant when discharged June 1, 1954. From 1954 to 1964, he was a driver for the Friendship Fire Co. in Winchester, Va., and was later employed by the federal government at the Dulles-Washington International Airport, retiring in 1971. He and his wife, Dorothy, then moved to King, where he managed the Town & Country Restaurant until 1974. He then associated himself with the K&W Cafeteria in Winston-Salem as manager until retiring in 1994. Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Frasier Geanious of the home; three daughters, Regina Geanious Burgin and husband, Dennis, of King, Kay Lawrence Picciuto and husband, Thom, of Toms Brook, Va., and Jean Lawrence High of King; a son, Ernest Hamilton Lawrence and wife, Kitty of Newport News, Va.; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Jean Geanious Armel of Winchester, Va.; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Jerry High, three sisters and four brothers. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001, in the Slate Funeral Home Chapel in King with the Rev. Randy Hillman officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home for an hour before the service and other times at his home. Graveside services will be held at a later date in the Mount Hebron National cemetery in Winchester, Va. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
