HERRON
Ms. Iva Lucille Herron, 93, of 236 N. Cameron Ave., passed away Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001, at her residence. She was a native of Belmont, born Sept. 12, 1907, the daughter of the late Charlie Mack and Mary Sadler Herron. She was a former member of Macedonia TVPH Church of God and the Upper Room Churches of God in Christ Jesus. She was a retired employee of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. with over 39 years of service. She is survived by a sister, Ruth Herron Mayfield of Winston-Salem; many nieces and nephews, two devoted, Jacqueline Crumblin and John Henry Mayfield Jr.; and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001, from the chapel of the Russell Funeral Home with the Rev. L.S. Werts officiating. Interment will be in the Evergreen cemetery. HORTON
Miles Christopher Horton Jr. of Newport, Va., was given rest by God after a long illness on Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001. He was the son of the late Dr. M.C. Horton Sr. of Raleigh and Theodocia Lipfert Horton Taliaferro of Winston-Salem. He is survived by his wife, Ruth C. Horton; his daughter and son-in-law, Carolina H. and Sheldon Lapan and his grandsons, Samuel Lapan and Tovin Lapan, all of Baltimore, Md.; a brother, Frank L. Horton of Winston-Salem; a sister-in-law, Mrs. L.S. Cline of Harrisonburg, Va., and his nephew and niece, Mr. and Mrs. Charles E. Cline of Dayton, Va. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001, in the Blacksburg United Methodist Church with the Rev. Don Roberts, the Rev. Don MacNicoll and the Rev. Carl Douglas officiating. The family will receive friends immediately after the service in the Whisner Building of the church. Burial will be private. GREENSBORO - Mr. Marvin Johnnie Hutchens Sr., 57, died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001, at Moses Cone Hospital. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, at Hanes-Lineberry Vanstory Street Chapel. The burial will be at Lakeview Memorial Park. He was employed at Asplundh Tree Service for 37 years and loved fishing. Surviving are his wife of 23 years, Carolyn Hutchens of the home; son, Marvin Johnnie Hutchens, Jr. of Greensboro; daughters Jeannie Hutchens Parks and husband, James, of Kernersville, Karen Hutchens Tally and husband Chris of Germanton, Sheila Hutchens Foster and husband Robert of Winston-Salem; parents Beecher and Goldie Hutchens of Yadkinville; stepchildren, Debbie Cox and husband Loy of Greensboro, Cindy McAdams of Eden and Troy Daniel Ryan of Greensboro; brothers Thomas Hutchens, Junior Hutchens, James Hutchens, Ed Hutchens, Frank Hutchens and Steven Hutchens; sister Darlene Jones; grandchildren Danielle Ryan of the home, Jake Butler, Taylor and Dylan Tally, Shayna Foster, Jason, Melissa, Violet and Jesse Cox, Christina Ryan, Zachary and Jon-Mikel Ryan; and great-granddaughter, Anastasia Leonard. JOHNSON
William S. "Chip" Johnson, 81, of Winston-Salem, N.C., died Feb. 7, 2001, at his home. He was born April 29, 1919, in Stokes County to Vernon W. and Ola Slate Johnson. He was of the Baptist faith. He graduated from Hanes High School and Draughn's Business College. He was retired from AT&T and served his country for four years during War World II. He received the Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Ribbon, European-African-MiddleEastern Theater Ribbon and the WWII Victory Ribbon. He was a very loving and generous father. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary Masten Johnson of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Bonnie Sue Johnson Wagner of Jonesville; two sons, Jerry and Jimmy Johnson, both of Winston Salem; three grandchildren, Jamie Wylie of Liberty, and Jeffrey and Gary Wagner of Jonesville; a great-granddaughter, Hailey Wagner; a sister, Dorothy Hamilton of Winston-Salem; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Lucy Fine. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 10, 2001, at Parklawn Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Bill Chatman officiating. JONES
MOCKSVILLE - Mrs. Ethel Ellis Jones, 87, formerly of Ralph Jones Road, Cornatzer community, died Thursday, February 8, 2001, at Davie Place in Mocksville after being in declining health for the past several years. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Eaton Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Richard Whitehart and the Rev. Elmer Day officiating. Burial will be in Cornatzer Baptist Church cemetery. The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday. They request memorials be considered for the cemetery fund of Cornatzer Baptist Church, 1372 Cornatzer Road, Mocksville, NC 27028, Mrs. Jones was born in Davie County on Dec. 14, 1913, to the late Willie Lee and Stella Carter Ellis and was retired with over 35 years of service from Hanes Corporation Knitwear Division. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Jones, on June 12, 1987. Also preceding her in death were three brothers, Robert, Elgin and L.C. Ellis and a sister, Sue Swicegood. Surviving are a sister, Georgia Cornatzer of Advance; five nieces; and two nephews.
LAFRANCE
William "Bill" Charles LaFrance, 78, of The Landing, died Thursday, February 8, 2001, at Grand Stand Regional Medical Center. He was born June 17, 1922, in North Wilbraham, Mass., a son of the late Charles Joseph and Margaret Hennessey LaFrance. Bill came to Myrtle Beach, S.C., from Greensboro in 1980. He was a graduate of Scarborough Prep School in New York and attended Villanova. He was an Army Air Force pilot during World War II and played professional baseball in the Saint Louis organization. He worked for many years with Western Electric in the engineering department. Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Patricia "Pat" Marks LaFrance; and a sister, Margaret Sicard of Wisconsin. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001, at McMillan-Small Funeral Home, Myrtle Beach, S.C. Private burial will be in Forest Lawn cemetery, Greensboro. Mrs. Lula Mae Laws, 78, formerly of 2032 Piedmont Circle, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001, at the Forsyth Medical Center. She was a native of McCullers, born July 14, 1922, the daughter of the late David and Lula King Laws. She was a member of the New Jerusalem Baptist Church and was a retired employee of Walker's Cleaners. Family members to cherish her legacy; a sister, Lessie Lee Laws of Winston-Salem; a brother-in-law, William Henry Gwyn of Winston-Salem; two nieces, Letha Mae G. Lee (Charleston) of Germany; her children, Derek Lee of California and Dana Lee of Atlanta, Ga. and Constance G. Boone Manus (Luther) and her daughter, Alicia Boone of Erie, Pa.; a nephew, Willie Gwyn (Mary) and his son, C. Sterling Gwyn of Winston-Salem; faithful cousins, Hazel Phillips (Bradley) of Garner and Charles Denning and devoted wife, Michelle and their children, Charles, Jr. and Charla of Winston-Salem; a special friend, Jackie Crawford of Winston-Salem and a host of other relatives and many friends. Funeral services will be held t noon Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001, from the New Jerusalem Baptist Church with the Rev. Samuel J. Cornelius officiating. EAST BEND - Mrs. Ada Ellen Hicks Lineberry, 84, of 2313 Binkley Road died Thursday, February 8, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. The funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time. Huff Funeral Home of East Bend is serving the Lineberry family.
McCORKLE
Mr. Eugene Jones McCorkle, 77, of 1108 Louise Road passed away Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001, at the Winston-Salem Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center. He was born April 10, 1923, in Winston-Salem to the late Mack and Jettie McCorkle. He was formerly employed at Hanes Dye and Finishing Co. and a veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by his sister, Mrs. Alberta Hayes. He is survived by his wife, Minnie B. McCorkle of the home; three sons, David (Detrice) Ingram, Haywood Reynolds of Winston-Salem and the Rev. Dr. Eugene (Linda) McCorkle of Rialto, Calif.; two daughters, Linda (Kenny) Rogers and Betty Guest of Winston-Salem; a devoted granddaughter, Sonya McCorkle; 26 grand-children; 26 great-grand-children; four brothers-in-law; four sisters-in-law; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at noon Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, in the chapel of the Russell Funeral Home, with the Rev. Craig Ingram officiating. Interment will be in the Piedmont Memorial Gardens. MORAVIAN FALLS - Mrs. Mabel Elizabeth Wiles Meadows, 90, of Moravian Falls died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001, at Avante of Wilkesboro. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001, at Walnut Grove Baptist Church in the Pores Knob Community with Dr. Paul Brunner and the Rev. Jay Johnson officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mrs. Meadows was born Feb. 8, 1910, in Wilkes County to Doctor Gordon and Carrie Myers Wiles. She was retired after 41 years of service to Carter Hubbard Publishing Co. and was a member of Walnut Grove Baptist Church. A son, Robert William "Bob" Meadows, preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband of 66 years, R. Earl Meadows of Moravian Falls; a daughter, Sarah M. Dearman of Charlotte; a sister, Lois Wiles Handy of Winston-Salem; a brother, Clarence "Doc" Wiles of North Wilkesboro; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Mrs. Helen Louise Lawrence Pearre, 85, formerly of Charlotte and Wilmington, died Wednesday, February 7, 2001, in Winston-Salem. She is survived by four children, Howard (and Kathy) Pearre of Winston-Salem, Robert (and Lisa) Pearre of Jacksonville, Fla., Susan Pearre Holt of Columbia, S.C., and Louise Pearre of Milwaukie, Ore.; 10 grandchildren, Amy, David, Abigail, Jennifer, Robert Jr., Christine, Nicholas, Patrick, Helen, and Victor; two greatgrandchildren; two brothers, John (and Gladys) Lawrence and Robert (and Lucille) Lawrence, all of Asheville; and many nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank the many kind care givers at Plantation Village and Champions Assisted Living in Wilmington, and Arbor Acres Fitzgerald Health Care, Forsyth Medical Center and Kate B. QUATTLEBAUM
Mrs. Pauline Harris Quattlebaum, formerly of 2600 Rosemary Drive passed away Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001, at the home of her daughter, Arwilda McCollum, 955 Dawnlea Drive, Lewisville. She was born in Johnston, S.C., the daughter of the late George and Fannie Harris and had resided in Winston-Salem most of her life. She attended the local public schools and attended Winston-Salem Teachers College. She was united in holy matrimony to the late Brooks Quattlebaum. Accepting Christ as her personal savior at an early age, she joined the Mount Olive Baptist Church and served faithfully in many capacities. She was a youth Sunday school teacher, church secretary, announcer, member of the United Daughters of Christianity and a secretary of the senior missionary. She later united with Middle Fork Christian Church where she was a member of the Women's Christian Fellowship and was a member of the Skyland Senior Citizen Club. Surviving to cherish her loving memory are a daughter, Arwilda Q. McCollum (Theodore) of Lewisville; three grandchildren, Paula Harris (Woodrow) of Lewisville, Theodore McCollum Jr. (Myra) of Winston-Salem and Gregory McCollum of Chicago. Ill.; a great-grandson, Zyon McCollum; two sisters, Rubystene H. Morrison and Doris Williams, both of Winston-Salem; two brothers-in-law, Dave Jackson of Saint Albans, N.Y. and Jackson Quattlebaum of Virginia Beach, Va.; a sister-in-law, Lillie B. Quattlebaum of Salley, S.C. and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001, from the Middle Fork Christian Church with the Rev. SHERMER
Mr. Gilson Gray Shermer, 80, of 2100 Nettlebrook Drive died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Oct. 27, 1920, the son of Talmadge DeWitt and Octavia Page Shermer. He was a retired yardmaster from Norfolk Southern Railway (formerly Norfolk and Western) after 37 years of service. He served in the Army Corps during World War II and was an instructor for the radio school and also the gunnery school. He was the radio operator on a B-24 bomber. On June 21, 1941, he was married to Eleanor Tesh. Surviving are his wife; two sons, Thomas Gray Shermer and wife Pat of Yorktown, Va., and Walter Talmadge Shermer of Sulphur, La.; and three daughters, Diane Williams and husband Don of Williamsport, Ind., Eleanor Jane Smith and husband Ken and Cathy Pauley and husband David, all of Winston-Salem. Also surviving are six grandsons; four granddaughters; three great-grandsons; and three great-granddaughters. Mr. Shermer was a member of South Fork Church of Christ. A graveside will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, at Forsyth Memorial Park led by Claude Pharr and Charles Belch. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9, at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel.
STYERS
Mrs. Rheumell S. Styers, 99, formerly of 5740 Nylon Drive, Winston-Salem, died Thursday, February 8, 2001, at Meadowbrook of Davie. Mrs. Styers was born in Bamburg, S.C., Aug. 26, 1901, to the Rev. Ethbert Lee and Frances Smoak. She moved to Winston-Salem at an early age and later moved to Pinnacle, living there until she was 18 years old. Her parents then moved to Rural Hall. Mrs. Styers attended Buies Creek Academy, which later became Campbell College, for a year and then she transferred to Salem College, where she studied music for three years. She taught piano for many years. Mrs. Styers was an active member of Beck's Baptist Church as long as her health permitted. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robah Gray Styers in 1959. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Matthew Gray Styers and Kay Adams Styers of Asheboro; three grandsons, M. Gray Styers Jr. of Raleigh, Mark Adams Styers of Charlotte and David Clark Styers of Alexandria, Va.; and three great-grandchildren, Richard and Rachel Styers of Raleigh and Jackson Styers of Charlotte. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Becks Baptist Church with burial to follow at Bethabara Moravian Graveyard. The family will receive friends from 10:30 to 11 a.m. at the church before the service. Mrs. Jessie Victoria Taylor, 89, the wife of Claude V. Taylor of Williams Road, Lewisville, formerly of McGrady, died Wednesday evening, Feb. 7, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, Winston-Salem. Mrs. Taylor was born May 15, 1911, in Wilkes County to William Henry and Rebecca Johnson Key. Mrs. Taylor was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband of the home; a son, Claude J. Taylor of Jupiter, Fla.; three daughters, Vida Weatherman of Lewisville, Gladys Westmorland of Jacksonville, Fla. , and Ann Earnest of Madison, Fla.; 15 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; four step-great grandchildren and three step-great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10 at Miller Funeral Chapel, 180 Sparta Road, North Wilkesboro, with the Rev. Billy Felts officiating. WARREN
Mr. Johnson Warren of 40077 N.C. Hwy 740, New London, N.C., passed on Tuesday evening, February 6, 2001, at the Stanley Memorial Hospital, Albemarle, N.C. He was a retiree of Alcoa Aluminum Corporation, was an active member of Shiloh Baptist Church of New London and former member of Cedar Grove AME Church. His wife, Thelma Harris Warren, preceded him in death. Surviving are several nieces, including a devoted niece, Vera R. Ledbetter, and Denise Harris, both of Winston-Salem, N.C., Jessie West and Mary Lee Johnson, both of Baltimore, Md.; two great-nieces, Paulette Stokes (Harrison) and Nicole Wellman, both of Winston-Salem, N.C.; two great-nephews, Harold Harris (Princela), and Caiphus Rice; great-great-nephews, Adrian J. and Alexander J. Stokes; a sister-in-law, Retha Harris of Winston-Salem, N.C.; cousins Alice Williams and Dora Carson, both of New London, N.C.; a devoted family friend, Macy Lee Hinson; and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, February 10, 2001, at 2pm from Shiloh Baptist Church, New London, N.C., with the Rev. Parnell Kelly officiating. Interment will follow in the Parker's Grove cemetery. The family will receive friends thirty minutes prior to the service hour at the church and at other times at the residence.
