WEDDLE

Mrs. Bertha Ardella Horton Weddle, 95, of Mount Airy, the widow of Mr. John Daniel Weddle, died at her home Thursday, February 8, 2001. Mrs. Weddle was born Sept. 5, 1905, in Carroll County, Va., to the late Jesse Burton and Mindy Green Horton. She was a member of Flippin Memorial Baptist Church and was a homemaker. Surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law, Betty Jean and Bill Warf of Rural Hall, Joleen Lawrence of Mount Airy and Carolyn Sue and Howard Via of Greensboro; a stepdaughter, Lucille DuChanois of Cleveland, Ohio; seven grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; nine step-great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren and four step-great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Weddle was preceded in death by two stepdaughters, Bernadine Semones and Catherine Weddle and a son-in-law, Keith Lawrence. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001, at Flippin Memorial Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Tim Burton and the Rev. R.J. Hartman, with burial to follow in the Korners Grove Primitive Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Moody Funeral; Home, where her body will remain until the time to be taken to the church to lie in state 30 minutes before the service.

BRANNOCK

GADSDEN, Ala. - Private graveside services were at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Rainbow Memorial Park for Wesley Max Brannock, 92, who died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001. Village Chapel Funeral Home, Alabama City, was in charge. Mr. Brannock was a native of Richfield, Ohio, and was raised in Mount Airy before moving to Gadsden in 1943. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Gadsden and the Gadsden Civitan Club. He was the owner of Brannock Realty. He is survived by his son, Eugene (Bobbie) Brannock of Silver Spring, Md.; daughter Patricia (Watt) Lipscomb of Gadsden; grandchildren Scott Lipscomb of Gadsden, John Brannock of Herndon, Va., and Cynthia Burton of Elk Ridge, Md.; great-grandchildren Mark Brannock, James Brannock, Patrick Burton, Jennifer Burton and Christopher Burton; and a sister, Hazel Brannock of Mount Airy. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Leukemia or Kidney Associations or the charity of your choice. Special thanks to Dr. Andrade, Dr. Webb Sledge and the attending physicians, nurses and staff of the fifth floor and ICU at Riverview Regional Medical Center. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

COPPEDGE

Mrs. Lucy Talton Coppedge, 95, of Winston-Salem died Feb. 5, at Forsyth Medical Center after a short illness. Mrs. Coppedge was born Feb. 24, 1905, to Rufus and Carrie Talton of Johnston County. She attended the Durham Conservatory of Music in Durham and Hardbarger's Business School in Raleigh. Mrs. Coppedge took great pride in having made the first Duke Blue Devils' mascot costume and remained an avid Duke fan until her death. She managed the first gift department of Bocock-Stroud before she and Mr. Coppedge Sr. opened Kopp's Camera Shop also in Bocock-Stroud. Mr. and Mrs. Coppedge helped begin Piedmont Photo Finishers Inc. in the late 1940s and shortly thereafter, started Coppedge Photography Inc. Mrs. Coppedge steadfastly remained with the studio until it closed in 1993. She was 88 years of age at the time of her retirement. She was a member of the Altrusa Club. Preceding Mrs. Coppedge in death were her parents; her husband, Thomas D. Coppedge Sr., a prominent local portrait photographer; and seven bro-thers and sisters. Surviving are her beloved son, Thomas D. Coppedge Jr. and wife Sarah of Winston-Salem; four grand-children, Cindy Coppedge Williams and husband Roy of Hendersonville, Amy Coppedge Dixon and husband Erik of Raleigh, Thomas D. Coppedge III and wife Jeanette of Raleigh and Debbie Coppedge Bremer and husband Ron of Rocky Mount; six great-grandchildren, Lesli and Hannah Williams, Jenny and Drew Bremer and Kaitlyn and Justin Dixon; a dear sister, Evelyn Talton Haigler: a devoted brother, Charles E. Talton and wife Beverly of Winston-Salem; cherished nieces and nephews; and longtime neighbors and friends, especially her loving caregiver, Peggy C. Isom. Mrs. Coppedge was a longtime member of Ardmore United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 8 at 2 p.m. at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home on Silas Creek Parkway, with Dr. William Medlin officiating. Interment will be in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at Hayworth-Miller. Memorials may be made to the Brenner Children's Hospital at Wake Forest Medical Center or Hospice of Winston-Salem.

DUGGINS

WALNUT COVE - Mr. P.D. Hanes Duggins, 70, died Monday at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mr. Duggins was born June 5, 1930, in Stokes County to the late William Jennings and Nannie Viola Hicks Duggins. He retired from P. Lorillard and was working at Food Lion in Walnut Cove at the time of his death. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of New Birth Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Mabel Duggins Smith; and a brother, Lewis Duggins. Survivors include his wife, Irene Taylor Duggins of the home; two devoted sons, Edward Hanes Duggins of the home and Darrell and wife Patricia Duggins of Rock Hill, S.C.; two other sons, Bobby and wife Gail Duggins of Lynchburg, Va., and Danny and wife Gail Duggins of Walnut Cove; three daughters, Janice Throckmorton and husband Larry of Walnut Cove, Lisa Duggins and Cindy Duggins of York, S.C.; two devoted stepsons, Roger Alley of Walnut Cove and David Alley and friend Lisa of Winston-Salem; sisters Peggy Duggins of Walnut Cove, Patty McBride of Kernersville and Eleanor and husband Grady Jefferies of Summerfield; a special, special grandson, Dalton Duggins of the home; several other grand-children and great-grand-children; very special friends, the Rev. Jimmy and wife Pat Bowman of Walnut Cove; and his devoted co-workers at Food Lion. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Burroughs Funeral Home, with the Rev. Brian Taylor and the Rev. Mike Dunlap officiating. Burial will be in the New Birth Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Burroughs Funeral Home and other times at the home.

GALLOWAY

Mr. William Galloway Jr., 50, of 3733 Stoney Glen Drive, known to family and friends as "Dee O'Malley" passed away Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001, at his residence following an extended illness. He was born March 23, 1950, in Forsyth County to William Galloway Sr. and the late Catherine Surles Staten. He was a native and lifelong resident of Winston-Salem and attended the local public schools. He was a member of the St. Matthew Apostolic Church and was formerly employed by Flow Motors and Modern Chevrolet. He is survived by his wife, May Doster Galloway of the home; two sons, William Galloway III and Ricky (Corneila) Galloway; a stepson, Reggie (Tonya) Doster all of Winston-Salem; 10 grandchildren; his father, William Galloway Sr. of Charlotte; five sisters, Earline (John) Ross, Patricia Smith and Tawanda Staten all of Winston-Salem, Linda Galloway and Lottie Mae Galloway of Bridgeport, Conn.; three brothers, Donald (Velicia) Galloway, James (Gertrude) Galloway and Jerry (Sharon) Henry all of Winston-Salem; two sisters-in-law, Pearl Lee of Wingate and Hattie Chambers of Monroe; a brother-in-law, Francis Doster of Concord; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, at the St. Matthew Apostolic Church with Bishop Joseph Lowery officiating. Interment will be in the Evergreen cemetery. GRAHAM

Mrs. Faye Greer Graham, 89, of the Heritage Plantation in Rowan County, formerly of Todd, died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001, in Rowan County. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001, at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel in Jefferson. Burial will be in the Woodford cemetery in Todd. Mrs. Graham was born in Ashe County, Feb. 16, 1911, to Walter T. and Emma Toliver Greer. She was a homemaker and was preceded in death by her husband, Giles Graham, and a son, Earl Graham. She is survived by a daughter, Carole June Greer of Rockwell; a son, James E. Graham of Todd; and a sister, Ardna Oves of Ocean City, N.J. Also surviving are six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandson, and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 Tuesday evening and 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday before services at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel in Jefferson. GREER

Mr. Lennie Gray Greer, 54, of Winston-Salem, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Nov. 18, 1946, in Forsyth County to Floyd Sidney and Doris Henderson Hamby. Preceding Mr. Greer in death were his father and a son, Jeffrey D. Greer. Surviving are his mother, Doris Henderson Hamby of the home; a son, Mike Greer and wife Keely; a daughter, Susan Joyce and husband Terry; and two granddaughters, Brittany Joyce and Kayla Greer, all of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Dollie Howell of the home and Mitzi Tesh and husband Brian of Lexington; two brothers, Donnie E. Greer and wife Kathy of Lewisville and Ricky A. Greer and wife Bonnie of Advance; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel by the Rev. Mike Lane. Burial will be in Westlawn Gardens of Memory. HODGES

MOUNT AIRY - Mr. William Gaston "Gat" Hodges, 83, of 149 W. Wilson St., the husband of Lovie Mae Cundiff Hodges, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001, at his home. Mr. Hodges was born in Hotchkiss, W.Va., on Oct. 7, 1917, son of the late Emitt E. and Lura Gardner Hodges. He retired from Adams-Millis/Sara Lee, where he was plant manager. After his retirement, he worked for Simmons Plumbing for 10 years, and had various real-estate interests throughout the Mount Airy area. He was also a member of Fancy Gap Baptist Church since 1946, where he served as a church trustee. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Lovie Mae Cundiff Hodges of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Harold Dean and Eva Hodges of Mount Airy; three grandchildren and spouses, Robert and Karen Hodges, Greg and Celia Hodges, and Eric Hodges all of Mount Airy; and five great-grand-children, Audra Hodges, Russ Hodges, Jarrett Hodges, Cody Hodges, and Lauren Hodges, all of Mount Airy; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hodges was preceded in death by five sisters, Ila O. Hodges, Lula E. Hodges, Emma Hodges, Ada A. Hodges, and Osie Cook, and three brothers, James E. Hodges, Walter E. Hodges, and Clark Russell Hodges. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, at Fancy Gap Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Dwight Sechrist and the Rev. Richard Loman. Burial will be in the Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, and at other times at his home, 149 W. Wilson St. His body will remain at the funeral home until carried to the church to lie in state 30 minutes before the funeral service. JOHNSON

YADKINVILLE - Mr. Dave L. Johnson, 69, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, at Hoots Memorial Hospital. Mr. Johnson was born Nov. 20, 1931, in Wilkes County to Russell and Nannie Sparks Johnson. Mr. Johnson lived in Yadkin County for 40 years, where he ran his own business. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean conflict and was a member of the Mountain View Baptist Church, North Wilkesboro. Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Ruby Wyatt Johnson of the home; three children, Steve and wife Cheryl, Phil and wife Susan and Jane and husband Ray; five grandchildren, Hannah, Mikki, Hallie, Jace and Hunter Grace; and a brother, Allen Johnson and wife Joyce of Statesville. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, at Forbush Baptist Church cemetery, by the Rev. Kelly Porter and the Rev. Charles Jones. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7 at Gentry Family Funeral Home, Highway 601 N., Yadkinville. JONES

Mrs. Annie Mae Howell Jones, 80, of 846 W. 11th St. passed away Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, at her residence. She was born Feb. 27, 1920, in Winston-Salem, the daughter of the late Amanda Rush Howell. Mrs. Jones was educated in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools and retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. She was married to the late Mr. Cal Jones in 1940 and a daughter was born of that union. At an early age, she joined Union Baptist Church and served tirelessly as a member of the Effort Aid Club and the Pastor's Aid Club. She worked faithfully in both these capacities and was known for visiting the sick and shut-in members of the church and offering assistance to those in need. She received a "Certificate of Recognition" for over 48 years of dedicated service from Union Baptist Church in May 1990. Mrs. Jones was a foster mother and grandmother to many and would lend at helping hand throughout her community. Many neighbors in the community could count on her for assistance and prayers, for she was a God fearing Christian woman who knew the value of prayer. Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by her loving daughter, Mrs. Diana Jones Carpenter in 1990. Mrs. Jones leaves to mourn her loss two granddaughters, Carol "Cookie" J. Jones and Tahita A. Jones; three great-grandchildren, Christopher D. Jones, Chelsea D. Jones and Morganne Jones all of Winston-Salem; dear cousins, Pearl Pledger and Delores Battle of Summerville, Mass.; a devoted friend, Maxine Turner; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 12 noon Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, at the Union Baptist Church with the Rev. Benjamin Moseley officiating. Interment will be in the Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family visitation will be from 11:30 to 12 noon Thursday at the church. (Russell)

LEAGANS

MOCKSVILLE - Dr. J. Paul Leagans, 89, of Wilkesboro St. died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, at his home. The son of Granville and Camilla Collette Leagans (both deceased), he was born in Cana, N.C. on Sept. 11, 1911. He graduated from North Carolina State University with a bachelor's degree in 1934. He worked as a high-school agriculture teacher, a county extension agent and an assistant state extension program leader and training specialist. In 1949, Dr. Leagans joined the graduate faculty at Cornell University, where he established a graduate studies program in extension and continuing education. He served nearly 30 years at Cornell, where more than 3,000 students were in his courses, with more than 300 of these earning graduate degrees under his direction. His students rep-resented 40 states and more than 30 countries. Dr. Leagans also served as a consultant to the Ford Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, the U.S. Agency for International Development and as adviser on extension and higher education to many U.S. universities and to several governments in Latin America, Africa, India and Asia. Before and after his time at Cornell, he served on the faculty at North Carolina State University for a total of 20 years. He was a member of the Mocksville First Baptist Church, served at a Rotarian for more than 60 years and had been a volunteer for Boy Scouts of America and the YMCA. Dr. Leagans is survived by his wife of 67 years, Mary Louise Lakey Leagans and two sons, John of Livingston, Texas and William of Wood Dale, Ill. His daughter, Linda Sutcliffe, preceded him in death. He is also survived by seven grand-children; nine great-grand-children; a sister, Dorothy Marx of LaCrosse, Va.; and a brother, Charlie Leagans of LaPlata, Md. He was preceded in death by three brothers and four sisters. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Eaton Funeral Chapel, with Dr. Van Lankford officiating. A graveside service will be in Eatons Baptist Church cemetery, conducted by Dr. David Gilbreath. The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 9 Friday night. They request memorials be considered for the J. Paul and Louise Leagans Agricultural and Extension Education Fellowship, CALS Foundation Office, Box 7645, NC State University, Raleigh, NC 27695.

MOORE

Mrs. Marg Lee Nelson LaFar Moore, 67, of 1253 Kent Place died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001, at her home. She was born Oct. 26, 1933, in Gaston County to Mary Lee Nelson LaFar and David Robertson LaFar Jr. She graduated from St. Mary's Junior College and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority. She lived in California, Charlottesville, Va., Greensboro, Gastonia, Winston-Salem and Roaring Gap. While in Winston-Salem, she was a member and president of the Twin City Garden Club, the Winston-Salem Debutante Committee and the Colonial Dames of Forsyth County. She volunteered in many civic and community capacities. She was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Mrs. Moore was preceded in death by a child, James Nelson Moore, in 1973. She is survived by two sons, Thomas Owen Moore III and wife Constance Ladd Moore and their children, Thomas Owen Moore IV and George Bennett Moore and Robertson LaFar Moore and wife Elizabeth Archer Moore and their children, David Robertson LaFar Moore and Elizabeth Archer Moore; and by a daughter, Mary Lee Hanes Moore of Raleigh. A private graveside service will be held in Salem cemetery followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church Building Fund, 520 Summit St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101 or to Exploris Middle School, Bird and Butterfly Sculpture Garden, 207 E. Hargett St., Raleigh, NC 27601. Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel is serving the family.

NESBIT

Mrs. Emma Boyd Nesbit, 77, of 886 W. 12th St., Winston-Salem, widow of Mr. Walter Nesbit, went to her heavenly mansion Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Dec. 10, 1923, to the late Mr. Wash and Lizzie Pen Boyd in Winnsboro, S.C. She is survived by a son, Mr. Londell (Samelle) Nesbit, and a foster son, Mr. Jerry Gordon of Winston-Salem; a brother, Mr. Tommy Lee Boyd of Winnsboro; three grandchildren, Shequoina Henry, Jaron Henry and Krishna Nesbit; devoted nieces Mrs. Andrena (Nathaniel) McCullough of Winston-Salem and Mrs. Mary Lee (Eddie) Greene of Winnsboro; and devoted nephew Mr. Waddell (Antionette) Boyd. She was preceded in death by seven brothers and two sisters. She will be missed by her many nieces and nephews and a host of many relatives and friends. Her faith in God sustained her even during her time of declining health; she was a faithful member of St. Stephen Missionary Baptist Church, where she sang on the gospel choir and was a member of the Sunday school. Funeral services for Mrs. Nesbit will be Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, at St. Stephen's. Visitation with the family will be at 1:30 p.m., and the funeral will start at 2 p.m., with the Rev. J.R. Samuels officiating. Interment will be at Evergreen cemetery. After the services, friends may contact the family at the home of a niece, Mrs. Andrena McCullough, 3041 Butterfield Drive, Winston-Salem. Clark S. NUGENT

PFAFFTOWN - Mrs. Dorothy Ann Spann Nugent, 48, of Seward Road died Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mrs. Nugent was born Jan. 17, 1953, in Augusta, Ga., to Max and Maggie Mae Wyatt Spain. She was a member of Cool Springs Baptist Church in Elkin. Surviving are two sons, Jerry Byrd of Clemmons and Jonathan William Nugent of Lewisville; a daughter Melanie Nugent of King; her mother of Wilkesboro; two brothers, Lee Vernon Payne of Boonville and Max Spain of Elkin; four grandchildren, including a special granddaughter, Eliz-abeth Roman of Boonville; and a special niece, Linda Lopez of North Wilkesboro. Memorial services will be private. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 tonight at Miller Funeral Service in North Wilkesboro.

PENNELL

Mr. Jack Pennell, 69, of Winston-Salem died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born April 16, 1931, in Forsyth County to Laura Edith Pennell Mendenhall. Mr. Pennell served with the U.S. Marine Corps. He was employed as a meat cutter at several local grocery stores, including Food Fair, Food Lion and retired from Lowe's Foods in 1994. After his retirement he worked part time for Food Lion. He was a loving son, husband and father. Surviving are his mother of Winston-Salem; his wife, Edna Dyson Pennell of the home; two sons, Randy J. Pennell and wife Vickie and their son, Justin, of Davidson County and Stephen Pennell and wife Trina of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Janet Pennell and Ed McNebb and their sons, Joshua and Jeremy McNebb of Yadkinville; two sisters, Jo Ann Ketner and Carolyn Wood and husband Fred of Winston-Salem; an aunt, Lena Gilbert; brothers-in-law Junior, Jerry, David, Kenneth and George Dyson; a sister-in-law, Linda Dyson, and a number of nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Forsyth Memorial Park by the Rev. J. Marion Rector. Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel is serving the family.

REAVIS

YADKINVILLE - A most precious, gracious, caring, and loving father and grandfather, Gerald Ray Reavis, 61, of Fish Brandon Road went to be with our heavenly father Feb. 5, 2001, at Iredell County Memorial Hospital in Statesville. Mr. Reavis was born Dec. 7, 1939, in Yadkin County to the late John Edgar and Edna Mae Reavis Reavis. He was owner and operator of the 601 Shell Service Station with his father for about 30 years, and was recently with Southwestern Carolina Auto Glass in Yadkinville. He was a member of Courtney Baptist Church and a veteran of the National Guard. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Crystal Angela Reavis in 1985. Surviving are his wife of 39 years, Janet Baity Reavis of the home; a son, Matthew Gerald (Regina Blackburn) Reavis of Thurmond; a granddaughter, Shania Fallon of Thurmond; a brother, Merrill (Shelby) Reavis of Boonville; two brothers-in-law, Tommy and Charlotte Baity and Kenneth and Linda Baity; and a sister-in-law, Lillian and Verlin Morris. His funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Courtney Baptist Church by the Rev. John Brown. He will lie in-state 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Gentry Family Funeral Service on Highway 601 North of Yadkinville.
