SANDERS

Miss Alice Irene Sanders died Monday, Feb. 05, 2001, at her home. Miss Sanders was born to Zachariah and Mary Leola Jordan Sanders in Hoke County. She was employed by Grandview Construction Co. Miss Sanders was a member of First Presbyterian Church. Surviving are a sister-in-law, Margaret D. Sanders; a niece, Susan S. Lanier and husband Carl of Winston-Salem; two nephews, David L. Angel Sr. and wife Paige of Winston-Salem and J. Stephen Sanders and wife Maxine of Cana, Va. and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, at Crews United Methodist Church cemetery, with the Rev. Wanda Ogden officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials may be made to the American Diabetes. Association/Forsyth Chapter, P. O. Box 571146, Win-ston-Salem, NC 27157.

SATTERWHITE

Harold Landis Satterwhite, 92, died Feb. 5, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Satterwhite retired from McCain Hospital after 50 years service. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Pinelawn Memorial Park Mausoleum, with the Norwood Greene officiating. Survivors include his son and wife, H. Landis Jr. and Ellen M. Satterwhite of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Patricia Ann Satterwhite of Mooresville; brothers Garland Satterwhite and Arthur Satterwhite of Rutherford College and Bill Satterwhite of Raleigh; a sister, Lillian S. Mauney of Rutherford College; and grandchildren Harold L. Satterwhite III of Winston-Salem and Cynthia S. Boling of Cary. Memorials may be made to the Raeford United Methodist Church, Raeford, NC 28376. Powell Funeral Home of Southern Pines is serving the family.

WALL

Mrs. Rachel Martin Wall, formerly of 1800 Charleston Ave., Portsmouth, Va., passed away Saturday evening, Feb. 3, 2001, at the Springwood Care Nursing facility after an extended illness. She was a native of Stokes County and had resided in Portsmouth for more than 70 years before coming to Winston-Salem seven years ago. She was a member of Zion Bethel United Church of Christ, Portsmouth, where she was active in many capacities. Mrs. Wall was preceded in death by her spouse, James Wall. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, in the chapel of Hooper Funeral Home, with the Rev. Thalferro Huntley, officiat-ing. Interment will be in the Dry Hollow Church cemetery, Belews Creek. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home. She is survived by two sisters-in-law, Minnie Lucas and Katherine Friende of Portsmouth, Va.; devoted cousins, Doretha Lyons and Thelma Williams of Winston-Salem; and other cousins and friends. The family may be contacted and the cortege will assemble and leave from the home of a cousin, Doretha Lyons, 4902 N. Cherry St., at 1 p.m. Thursday. (Hooper)

WOOD

NORTH WILKESBORO - Ms. Betty Lou Wood, 69, of Bethany Ford Road died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, at Hugh Chatham Nursing Home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Reins-Sturdivant Chapel, with the Rev. Dale Alexander, the Rev. Jeff McCann and the Rev. Michael Romans officiating. Burial will be in Mountlawn Memorial Park. Ms. Wood was born Sept. 19, 1931, in Wilkes County to Zebulon Grant and Vergie Byrd Wood. She graduated val-edictorian of her class at Mountain View High School in 1949. Ms. Wood retired from Lowe's Hide and Metal and was a member of Maranatha Baptist Church, where she served as pianist. She is survived by two sisters, Sylvia Sue Cooke of North Wilkesboro and Mary Wellborn of Wilkesboro and a brother, Kyle Wood of North Wilkesboro. The family will be at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home from 6:30 to 8:30 Wednesday. Memorials may be made to Round Mountain Baptist Church cemetery Fund, 3228 Airport Road, Hays, NC 28635, or to Rock Creek Baptist Church cemetery Fund, c/o Jean Warren, 4920 Rock Creek Road, Hays, NC 28635.

ALLEN

Mr. John Henry Allen, 82, of Independence Village in Winston-Salem died Sunday, Jan. 21. He and his late wife, Charlotte Drummer Allen were born, reared and married in Milwaukee, Wis., where he graduated from the Milwaukee School of Engineering in 1941. After Mr. Allen's business career in engineering, marketing and sales had taken the family to Indiana, Ohio, New Jersey and Minnesota, he and Charlotte moved to Winston-Salem in 1978 when he retired as director of marketing and market development for Gould Inc.'s Metal Division in Minneapolis. Soon thereafter he received a Certificate of Appreciation from the governor of North Carolina for his extensive volunteer work, which included Winston-Salem Churches in Ministry, Senior Services/Meals on Wheels, Shepherd's Center, Prison Ministries, Elks Club, Lenoir-Rhyne College Development Board, Yadkin Senior Golf Association, S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A. (barbershop chorus), sponsor-ship of and correspondence with children needing assistance in underdeveloped countries and active and steadfast involvement in many capacities in his cherished church home Augsburg Lutheran. This commitment to civic con-tribution was a theme throughout his life, as he did volunteer work for many organizations such as Rotary Club, Big Brothers, United Way, Junior Achievement, a board of the Girl Scouts of America, a school board and the executive board of the Lutheran Church Minnesota Synod. His many interests included painting, golf, singing and writing music, little theater, travel and photography, Spanish, contract bridge, Senior Olympics and attending musical programs, plays and sports events. His wife died in 1985 and his late daughter, Barbara Joan Allen, in 1986. He is survived by three daughters and their families, Deborah Allen-Baber and Wayne Kerstetter of Chicago, Gail Allen and John Colonna of Miami and Patricia Allen Kruming and Eric Kruming of St. Louis; grandchildren Ethan and Laura Kruming, Brendan and Krista Baber, Jim Baber and Sonia Carter; his brother, Arthur J. Allen of Milwaukee; and numerous other dear relatives. His family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home on Silas Creek Parkway, and there will be a memorial service at Augsburg Lutheran Church at 4 p.m. Friday followed by a reception with the family at the church. CREWS

Mrs. Edith Lee Kallam Crews, 74, of Winston-Salem passed away Monday, Jan. 22, 2001. She was born to the late Cecil Bryan Kallam and Bessie Lee Murphy Kallam on Oct. 2, 1926, in Winston-Salem. She married Charles David Crews Jr. on March 6, 1947, at Crews United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem. He preceded her in death on May 6, 1993. A brother, Robert Bryan Kallam, also preceded her in death. One daughter, Carol Kay Nichols of Atlantic Beach; a son, Dean Crews of Chevy Chase, Md.; two sisters, Mrs. A.R. (Biddy) Tuttle and Patsy Vaughn of Winston-Salem, survive her. Also surviving her are a grandson, Michael Todd Nichols of Atlantic Beach and a special niece, Ashley Vaughn of Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at Crews United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Wanda Ogden officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 Wednesday evening at Vogler's Main Street Chapel. Memorials may be made to the Crews United Methodist Church, 4150 Reidsville Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27101.

CROUSE

Miss Mary Caroline Crouse, 94, of Winston-Salem died Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born June 22, 1906, in Forsyth County to William A. and Fannie Spaugh Crouse. Miss Crouse spent most of her life in Forsyth County. She was a member of Friedberg Moravian Church where she worked in the Sunday-school primary department for a number of years, and was a member of the Women's Fellowship and Senior Friends. She worked in Old Salem Inc. for 15 years. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Luther and Frank E. Crouse. Surviving are a sister-in-law, Florence Crouse of Winston-Salem, and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Friedberg Moravian Church, with the Rev. G. Thomas Shelton and the Rev. Norwood Green officiating. Burial will be in the church graveyard. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Memorials may be made to Friedberg Moravian Church, 2178 Friedberg Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27127.

GAITHER

Miss Louise Gaither, 85, of 760 Oaklawn Ave. died Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, at The Oaks at Forsyth, where she was recovering from a recent illness. Miss Gaither was born May 14, 1915, in Winston-Salem to Moody Z. and Mittie Perryman Gaither. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Moody Z. Gaither Jr. She attended the local schools and supported herself through college during the depression, graduating from Salem College in 1935. Upon graduation, Miss Gaither taught third grade at Forest Park Elementary School until her retirement. She was a member of Home Moravian Church, where she was a member of the adult choir and played piano for the 4-year-old Sunday school class until her health failed. Every Christmas she provided the holly boutonnieres for the ushers, dieners and ministers for the Christmas Eve lovefeasts. Every Easter, she lovingly decorated over 200 Easter eggs using a melted wax method and decorative patterns handed down through several generations of her family. She always shared them with the children in her Sunday school class, neighbors and friends. Her loving and generous spirit will always be remembered. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 25 at Home Moravian Church. The Rev. Lehoma Bain Goode and the Right Rev. James C. Hughes will officiate, with burial to follow at God's Acre. Memorials may be made to the Book of Remembrance of Home Moravian Church, 529 S. Church St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101.

GRUBBS

GERMANTON - Mr. Donald Carlton Grubbs, 53, of Red Bank Road in Germanton, died Monday morning Jan. 22, 2001, in Salisbury following a lengthy period of declining health. A native of Forsyth County, he was born Oct. 31, 1947, to the late Ivey Carlton and Odessa Beshears Grubbs. Mr. Grubbs was a member of the Baux Mountain Baptist Church in Winston-Salem and was employed by R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. for more than 33 years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Gary Eugene Grubbs in 1969. He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Nancy Smith Grubbs of the home; two daughters, Donna Grubbs Rymer and husband Rodney and Angela Grubbs Waddell and husband Michael all of Salisbury. A funeral service will be conducted in the Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home, Rural Hall Chapel at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, officiated by the Rev. George Presson and Rev. Clayton Smith. Burial will follow in Crestview Memorial Park in Rural Hall, N.C. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 4-A Oak Branch Drive, Greensboro, N.C. 27405 or charity of choice.

HUDSON

JONESVILLE - Ila Patton Hudson 79, of Center Road passed away Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, at her home. Mrs. Hudson was born May 19, 1921, to the late Gordon and Della Brown Patton. She was a homemaker and a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church. Mrs. Hudson was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Warren Hudson and two sisters, Bessie Brinkley and Ethel Brewer. Surviving are her daughter; Wanda (Butch) Lankford, of Jonesville; a son, Benny (Brenda) Hudson of Jonesville; two brothers, Jessie Patton of Boonville and Zeb Patton of Statesville; two grandchildren, Renee Lankford and Michael Hudson of Jonesville and several nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at Shady Grove Baptist church by the Rev. Paul Stewart, the Rev. Everette Carter and the Rev. Kenny Pardue. Mrs. Hudson will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, at Gentry Family Funeral Service on Little Mountain Road, Jonesville and other times at the home of the son, Benny Hudson, 3308 Evans Road, Jonesville.

KALE

WALKERTOWN - Mr. Dexter Rhyne Kale, 65, died Monday, January 22, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Dec. 20, 1935, in Iredell County to the late Harry and Thelma Watlington Kale. Mr. Kale was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a truck driver for Sara Lee Corporation. Two brothers, Bernie and Leo, preceded Mr. Kale in death. Surviving are a daughter, Tracy Davis and husband Ronnie of Pine Hall; a son, Mark Kale and wife Debbie of San Jose, Calif.; his loving partner, Carol Sue Grubbs of the home, and her children and grandchildren; two, grandsons, Andrew and Ron Davis; and a sister, Harriett Hamilton and husband Steve of Sun City, Calif. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel by the Rev. Tom V. Southern. Burial will be at the Gardens of Memory in Walkertown. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home.

KIRCHNER

Mrs. Olivia Bradford Welch Kirchner, of Winston-Salem, died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was born in Ellisville, Miss., May 4, 1916, to the late Timothy Daniel Welch and Leonora Perry Estes Welch. Mrs. Kirchner was preceded in death by her husband of 24 years, Marcellus Clement Kirchner and one sister, Phredonia Estes Welch. Survivors include her son, Marcellus, and his wife, Theresa, of Norfolk, Va., one brother, Richard Noel Welch, and his wife, Yolande, of Memphis, Tenn., one sister, Mrs. Frances Rogers Welch Guthrie, of Memphis, Tenn., five nephews; William Bradford Guthrie, and his wife Sandy, of Cordova, Tenn., Edmund Louis Kirchner, and his wife, Pat, of Memphis, Tenn., William Michael Kirchner, and his wife, Clara, of Bartlett, Tenn., Timothy Ransom Welch, and his wife, Cyndi, of Apex, and Daniel Richard Welch, and his wife, Nancy, of Mineola, N.Y., four nieces; Mary Evelyn Kirchner Mulrooney, and her husband Al, of Collierville, Tenn., Linda Kirchner Honnoll, of Memphis, Tenn., Anna Kirchner Guiabo, of Hayward, Calif., and Kathleen Noel Welch Campbell and her husband, John, of Sanibel Island, Fla., and several great-nephews and great-nieces. Mrs. Kirchner graduated from Memphis State University. She worked for the Department of the Navy, the Veterans Administration, and retired from the staff of Wake Forest University. She was an avid gardener and bridge player, a member of the Piedmont Club, and a devoted parishioner of St. Leo the Great Catholic Church. She also was an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Woman's Club of Winston-Salem, the Thursday Morning Music Club, the St. Theresa's Guild, and the Winston-Salem Garden Study Club. A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church with the Rev. Herbert Burke officiating. There will be a prayer service at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home Silas Creek Chapel at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, and the family will receive friends immediately following until 9 p.m. Interment will be Friday, Jan. 26 at Calvary cemetery in Memphis, Tenn., with departure to the cemetery at 1 p.m. from Memphis Funeral Home Poplar Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mrs. Kirchner's memory to St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, 225 Springdale Ave., Winston-Salem, 27104.

KLEEBERG

BURLINGTON - Mr. Fred Kleeberg, 87, of 7407 Danford Road died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after a brief illness. He was born in New York City, N.Y., to the late Albert Kleeberg and the late Elsie Boros Kleeberg. He retired from Western Electric in 1973 after 42 years of service. Mr. Kleeberg was a member of Low's Lutheran Church, the Newark Masonic Lodge No. 7 for more than 50 years and the Telephone Pioneers of America. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, at Low's Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Brian Ballard, the pastor of the church, officiating. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park. Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Mrs. Betty Smith Kleeberg of the home; sons Mr. Richard Kleeberg of Gibsonville, Mr. Larry Kleeberg of Winston-Salem, Mr. Charles Kleeberg of Tacoma, Wash. and Mr. Thomas Kleeberg of Burlington; sister Mrs. Delores Singleton of Puerto Rico; seven grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; six stepgreat-grandchildren; and nine nieces and nephews in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mrs. Elsie MacNamara and Mrs. Clara Murphy. The family will be at the Rich & Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and other times at the residence. The body will be taken to the church 30 minutes before the service. Memorials may be made to Low's Lutheran Church Organ Fund, 2136 Highway 61 S., Liberty, NC 27298.

MAGARGEE

DECATUR, Ga. - Rosalind T. Magargee, 81, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Jan. 16 of natural causes while visiting family in Charlotte. She was the sister of Ruth P. Taylor Banbury of Winston-Salem. She was born in Valdosta, Ga. the daughter of Clarence Janes and Rosa P. Taylor. Ms. Magargee graduated from Valdosta High School and Georgia State Woman's College, now Valdosta State University. During World War II she served with the American Red Cross and later became director of the Decatur Parks and Recreation Department. In 1964 she was employed by Grady Hospital as director of the personnel department, retiring in 1984. Rosalind was a very active member of Decatur Presbyterian Church for more than 50 years. She loved opera, symphonic music and was an accomplished pianist. She had an ardent love for flowers and landscape gardening and was a docent at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta for many years. She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Ruth P. Taylor Banbury and the Rev. Dr. James "Jim" H. Banbury of Winston-Salem and their three children, the Rev. Dr. Rosalind and Richard Banbury-Hamm of Richmond, Va., James "Jim" Taylor and Susan Banbury of Charlotte and Bruce Plowden and Tonya Banbury of Fort Mill, S.C.; and several cousins and many friends. A family service of committal was held last weekend in the garden of Bruce Banbury in Fort Mill, S.C. A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, at Decatur Presbyterian Church. Donations may be made to the Lupus Foundation of America, 2841 Foxwood Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103 for "The Rosalind T. Magargee Memorial Fund for Lupus and Related Disease", or to a charity of choice.

MARTIN

Mrs. Lillian Lenore Trotter Martin of 3546 Fieldstone Drive, the wife of Brother Al Martin, passed away Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at the Forsyth Medical Center. She was born to the late Charlie and Lillie Trotter of Chesapeake, Va., and was a member of the Shiloh Baptist Church. Mrs. Martin was formerly employed at WAAA radio station, where she founded the acclaimed programs "Serve the Children" and "Personalities in the Community". She was the former director of Family Services Inc. She is survived by her loving husband, Al Martin; a daughter, Beverly Speller of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a granddaughter, Denise Clark of Atlanta; three sisters, Emma Moore of Winston-Salem, Ella Crayton of Brooklyn and Dora Ayers Smith of Chicago; four nieces; four nephews; a devoted neighbor and friend, Sarah Stuckey; and many other relatives and dear friends. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at the Shiloh Baptist Church, with Dr. Paul A. Lowe Jr. officiating. Entombment will be in Gardens of Memory, Walkertown. The family visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday at the church. (Russell)

NOWLING

Mr. Abraham Nowling of the Winston-Salem Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Lloyd Presbyterian Church on Chestnut Street, with the Rev. Laura M. Spangler and the Rev. Catherine J. Reed officiating. Mr. Nowling was born May 22, 1902, in Stuart, Va., to Sally Savannah and James Nowling. He lived and worked in Greensboro and the old Depot Street area of Winston-Salem. In his earlier years, he traveled the country by train, holding a variety of jobs. He was devoted to his mother but, in his later years, lost track of any remaining relatives. Memorials may be made to the Abraham Nowling Fund for residents with special needs, c/o Winston-Salem Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center. Memorial Funeral Chapel is serving the family.
