PARRIMAN

Mr. Charles Edward Parriman Sr., 56, of Winston-Salem, formerly of 1350 Derry St. passed from labor to reward Jan. 21, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born Dec. 26, 1944, in Winston-Salem to the late Ben Parriman and the late McClester J. Cannon. He was reinstated as a member of Antioch Christian Church and served on the mass choir until his illness. He was employed by USA Staffing (Safeco Insurance Co.) until his work injury. Surviving his passing are a son, Charles E. Parriman Jr. (Elizabeth); a daughter, Vicki Renee Parriman; two brothers, Cole B. Cannon (Bobbie) of Sunnyvale, Calif. and Willie J. (Catherine) Cannon of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren; four nieces; an aunt, Bernetta Perryman; and a cousin, James Perryman. Family visitation will be 30 minutes immediately following the funeral services which will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27 at Antioch Christian Church with the Rev. James A. Gilliam officiating. Beasley's Funeral Home is in charge of services and arrangements.

SEGRAVES

Mr. John Franklin Segraves, 78, of Winston-Salem died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, at 10:43 a.m. He was born Jan. 6, 1923, in Forsyth County to Benjamin F. and Flora Culler Segraves. He was a lifelong member of Bethabara Moravian Church, attended Old Town High School and the University of N.C. at Chapel Hill. Mr. Segraves was an electrician and electrical contractor. He was a World War II veteran. For 50 years he was a member of Winston Lodge No. 167, a 54-year member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and a 50-year member of the National Electrical Contractors of America. Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Edith Grubbs Segraves; a son, Steve Franklin Segraves; a daughter, Linda Segraves Miller and her husband Ernest; six grandchildren, Brian and Tammy Davis, Troy and Jennifer Davis Howard and Stephanie and Kayla Segraves; three great-grandsons, Jordan Tyler and Hunter Gray Howard and Johnathan Hayes Davis; a sister, Clara Sharp; and a brother, David Segraves. Lovingly remembered is grandson, Seth Franklin Segraves, who died at age nine. Also preceding him in death were his parents; a brother; and four sisters. Following a private family service, a public graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Forsyth Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Hospice Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. Vogler and Sons Reynolda Road Chapel is serving the family.

STEELMAN

Mrs. Martha Elizabeth Steelman, 83, of Winston-Salem, passed away Monday, Jan. 22, 2001. She was born to the late Walter Clark Slack and Lou Della Parks Slack Oct. 11, 1917, in Star. She was married to Charles Dayton Steelman. He preceded in her death in 1975. Three brothers and three sisters also preceded her in death. She enjoyed traveling and was known for her positive attitude and always having a smile. Mrs. Steelman loved caring for others, especially her family and grandchildren. Three sons, Steve Steelman and his wife, Helen of Winston-Salem, Jack Steelman and his wife, Jo of Pfafftown and Larry Steelman and his wife, Elizabeth of Dunwoody, Ga.; two daughters, Jo Ann Nelson and her husband, Arthur of Richmond, Va. and Nancy Fogle of Hackensack, N.J.; 11 grandchildren; Mitch Steelman, Beth Steelman, Dayton Steelman, Taylor Steelman, Charlotte Steelman, Patrick Steelman, Kim Sheller and her husband, Joe, David Eddy, Brad Nelson, Ashley Overbeck and her husband, Charles and Cameron Fogle and his wife, Lynn and a great-grandchild, Anna Sheller survive her. Numerous nieces, nephews, friends and other relatives also survive her. Funeral services will be held at 3:30p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, at the Fries Memorial Moravian Church. The Rev. Stuart Zimmerman will officiate. Interment will follow at God's Acre. Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Vogler's Main Street Chapel. Memorials may be made to Fries Memorial Moravian Church, 251 N. Hawthorne Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27104.

STOPHEL

Mr. George David Stophel, 76, of 4316 Bethania Station Road died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mr. Stophel was born Dec. 3, 1924, in Bristol, Tenn., to the late Mack Roy and Mary Myrtle Vance Stophel. He spent most of his life in Winston-Salem and was a member of Pfafftown Christian Church where he was a former elder and caretaker. Mr. Stophel was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Army stationed in North Africa and Italy, and was a recipient of a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star. He was a member and past master of the Forsyth Masonic Lodge No. 707. He was also a member of OES Chapter 355 and served as a warder. He worked for Krispy Kreme as a salesman, retiring with 231/2 years of service. After retirement, he drove a school bus for the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school system for 13 years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Lucille Bowen; a brother, Mack J. Stophel; and a brother-in-law, Robert Ritchie. Mr. Stophel is survived by his wife, Edna Cline Stophel of the home; three sons, Tony, Wayne and Michael Stophel; three sisters, Mary Alice Hagy and husband Dudley of Bristol, Tenn., Nancy Langford and husband Coy of Huntsville, Ala., and Kate Ritchie of Fond-du-Lac, Wis.; a sister-in-law, Betty Stophel of Winston-Salem; a brother-in-law, Jack Bowen of Baltimore, Md.; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Pfafftown Christian Church, with Dr. Tom Everton and the Rev. Richard Cline officiating. Burial will be in the Pfafftown cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 4-A Oak Branch Drive, Greensboro NC 27405, or Pfafftown Christian Church Choir Fund, 3323 Transou Road, Pfafftown, NC 27040.

WILSON

MARTINSVILLE, Va. - Mrs. Lula Lash Hairston Wilson, 90, of 1217 Maxine Road died Jan. 22, 2001, at her home. She was born in Walnut Cove on March 24, 1910, to Oscar and Mary Vaughn Lash. She was a resident of Martinsville for 70 years, was retired from E.I. Dupont as a spinner after 30 years service and a charter member of Charity Christian Church, E. Martinsville. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Mazie Mitchell of Martinsville; a sister, Mrs. Hessie B. Hayes of Greensboro; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends at 1217 Maxine Road, Martinsville. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, at Charity Christian Church, with the Rev. Ruben Martin officiating Her remains will be at Hairston Funeral Home Inc. Visitation will be at the church 30 minutes before the service. Interment will be in Carver Memorial Gardens, Martinsville.

WRAY

Shirley J. Wray, 73, of White Township, formerly of Apollo, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at her home. A daughter of William and Emily Barber Bowe, she was born Sept. 10, 1927, in North Vandergrift. Mrs. Wray lived in Winston-Salem for the past 11 years. Before that she lived in Apollo and Boulder, Colo. She had been employed by Steiners Manufacturing in Saltsburg and Neo Data and J.C. Penney's in Boulder. Surviving are her husband of 51 years, George P. Wray; three daughters, Bonita Jo Wray of Winston-Salem, Georgia L. "Missy" Brosko of Indiana and Paula N. Wray of San Francisco, Calif.; two sons, David W. Wray of Wallingford and M. Douglas Wray of Longmont, Colo.; six grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. She is also survived by a brother, William D. Rowe Sr. of Vandergrift and two sisters, Guinevere Fleissner of Pittsburgh and Barbara Walsh of Washington Township. She was preceded in death by her father in 1964 and her mother in 2001. There was no visitation. Private funeral services were conducted by the Rev. John Helgeson. Interment was in Riverview cemetery, Apollo. Curran-Shaffer Funeral Home Inc., Apollo was in charge of arrangements.

BARNARD

Richard "Dick" Wesley Barnard passed away Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001, in Raleigh. He was born in Iredell County on July 5, 1917, to Thomas Lee Barnard and Mary McCoy Barnard. He was a graduate of Yadkinville High School in Yadkinville and a member of the Methodist church. He was a retired technical writer from AT&T with 32 years of service. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Lucy Rose Barnard. He leaves to cherish his memories a beloved son, Tony Craig Barnard and wife Lisa; two precious granddaughters Renee and Rachelle, all of Raleigh; two daughters, Patricia Painter of Harmony and Carolyn Foster of Mocksville; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home, 3315 Silas Creek Parkway, Winston-Salem. The body will lie in state from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Entombment will follow the funeral service at Forsyth Memorial Park in Winston-Salem. The family will receive guests from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, at the Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home.

BIGGERS

The Rev. Sherrill Bost Biggers, 85, of Charlotte died Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001, at Wesley Care Center. He was born July 7, 1915, in Cabarrus County, a son of the late William Biggers and Maggie Bost Biggers. The Rev. Biggers retired as a Methodist minister in the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church, having held pastorates in Asheville, Winston-Salem, Greensboro and Charlotte. He was a graduate of Emory University and received his master of divinity degree from Duke University. The Rev. Biggers served as a chaplain in the U.S. Army during World War II and retired as a colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves after 30 years of service. He was a member of Myers Park United Methodist Church and the fellowship Sunday school class. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, Feb. 19, 2001, at Myers Park United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Julian M. Aldridge Jr. officiating. Interment will be private for the family. The family will receive friends after the memorial service in the church fellowship hall. Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Eleanor Lazenby Biggers; three children, John Mark Biggers of Charlotte, Dr. Sherrill Biggers Jr. and his wife Sherry of Clemson, S.C., and Dr. Barbara B. Ellis and her husband Dr. Herbert Kimmel of Houston, Texas, and three grandchildren, Lindsay Biggers, Leigh Biggers and Allen Biggers. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes. Foundation, 1628 E. Morehead St., Suite 200, Charlotte, NC 28207 or to Myers Park United Methodist Church, P.O. BLAIR

TREASURE ISLAND, Fla. - Mrs. Dora Lee Teague Blair, 79, formerly of Winston-Salem died Feb. 8, 2001. She was born Oct. 26, 1921, in Winston-Salem to the late Sidney Moses and Della Crater Teague. She graduated from R.J. Reynolds High School and was employed with the Veterans Administration. Her husband, Griff Blair, preceded her in death. Also two brothers, James and George Teague and a sister, Norma Teague McPherson. She is survived by a son, Ayden Blair and a daughter, Bonnie McLauglin and husband Martin of Florida; a brother, Sidney and wife Margie Teague; a niece, Susan Mitchell; and a nephew, Dr. Sidney Teague II of Winston-Salem. A memorial service was held in Treasure Island, Fla.

BLISS

MOUNT AIRY - Mr. Roger Alan Bliss, 57, of 412 Franklin St. passed away at home Sunday, Feb. 11, 2001. Mr. Bliss was born in Cook County, Ill., on Aug. 13, 1943, the son of the late Frederick George Bliss and Darlie Matilda Engman Bliss. Mr. Bliss was a professional massage therapist, a teacher of Tai Kwando and Tichia and of the Protestant faith. He graduated from Rochester Technical School and obtained his master's degree from California College of Arts and Crafts. Surviving are a brother and sister-in-law, Donald Frederick and Barbara Bliss of Clemmons. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy. The family will receive friends one hour before the memorial service. Flowers will be accepted.

BREWER

Mrs. Lorine Fulp Brewer, 86, of Winston-Salem died Friday, Feb. 16, 2001, at Meadowbrook Manor of Clemmons. She was born April 24, 1914, in Forsyth County to Christopher C. and Laura Byrd Fulp. Mrs. Brewer was a member of Mount Carmel United Methodist Church and was retired from Forsyth Medical Center. Surviving are her husband, Roy C. Brewer of Winston-Salem; two sons, Donnie R. Brewer and special friend Trudy McCuiston of Winston-Salem and Tommy W. Brewer and wife Joyce of Swansboro; three grandchildren, Lela N. Brewer of Winston-Salem, Holly Brewer Carmin and husband Robbie of Dobson and Jeff Brewer and wife Jennifer of Thomasville; a great-grandchild, Garrett Carmin of King; a stepgrandchild, Pam Gross of Winston-Salem; two stepgreat-grandchildren, Tyler Gross and Austin Gross of Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be 12:30 p.m. Sunday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. Ken Eller officiating. Burial will follow in Parklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Mount Carmel United Methodist Church, 4265 Ebert Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27127.

MOCKSVILLE - Alyssa Ariana Burton, infant daughter of Danny E. and Shannon Cook Burton of Redland Road, Advance, died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Elbert "Buster" Cook; maternal great-grandparents, Vira J. Smith, Lester M. Smith, Rosa Cook and Clyde Cook; and her paternal great-grandfathers, Bobby L. Burton Jay Bailey. Surviving in addition to her parents are her maternal grandparents, Terena R. Cook of Walnut Cove and Margie S. Cook of Advance; paternal grandparents, Delilah S. Burton and Walter P. Burton of Mocksville and Bruce L. Burton and Joann Burton of Mocksville; and paternal great-grandparents, Rebecca P. Fearington of Mocksville and Dorothy Bailey of Lexington. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, at Bethlehem United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mark Weekly and the Rev. Danny Shore officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mr. Gary Lynn Creason Sr., 59, of 4921 Kaysboro Drive died Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001, at his home. He was born on April 12, 1941, in Craighead County, Ark., a son of Lavern Creason Franklin and the late Virgil Harold Creason. He was a district sales manager for Mesco Metal Buildings and a member of Northwoods Baptist Church. Surviving are his mother, Lavern Franklin of Jonesboro, Ark.; two sons, Gary Lynn Creason Jr., and John Cunningham Creason, both of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Candace Lee Holcomb of Huntsville, Ala.; a brother, William Franklin of Jonesboro, Ark.; a grandson, Brandon Lynn Creason; and Evelyn Creason. A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, at Northwoods Baptist Church by the Rev. Jim Thompson and the Rev. Tommy Dollar. Burial will follow in Mount Gur cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Saturday at Hayworth-Miller-Cain Funeral Home and 12:30 to 2 p.m. Sunday at the church fellowship hall. GORDON

KING - Ersie Isabel Gordon, 86, of East King Street died at her home Friday, Feb. 16, 2001, after a lengthy illness. She was born Oct. 2, 1914, in Stokes County to Robert M. and Ola Kiser Gordon. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Albert (Tunie) Gordon in 1975 and Elmer Gordon in 1995. Surviving are sisters Frances Gordon and Lee Ila Gordon of the home; brothers and sisters-in-law Clyde David Gordon and wife Laurean of Elkin, Eugene "Shorty" Gordon and wife Estelle of Pinnacle and Eldee Gordon of King; and several loving nieces and nephews and grandnieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, at the First Baptist Church in King with Dr. John Wren officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in King Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. this evening at Slate Funeral Home in King and other times at her home. GREGORY

HAYS - Mrs. Ruth Proffit Gregory, 91, of Mountain View Road died Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001, at Wilkes Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, at Reins-Sturdivant Chapel with the Rev. Julius Blevins and the Rev. Van Proffit officiating. Burial will be in Mountlawn Memorial Park. The family will be at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home from 1 to 3 prior to the service. Mrs. Gregory was born Jan. 31, 1910, in the Elk Creek section of Wilkes County to William Albert and Mary Lou Walsh Proffit. Ruth graduated in 1935 from Appalachian State Teacher's College. She held teaching positions at Denny, Ferguson and Hendrix Elementary Schools. The greater part of her teaching career was spent at Mountain View Elementary School, where she served for 25 years as a dedicated and innovative teacher. As a teacher, she was very active in the religious, professional and political life of the community. A member of Mountain View Baptist Church, she served for many years as a teacher in Sunday school and vacation Bible school. She also was a member of the WMU and of the choir for 50 years. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Rick Gregory of Charlotte; two sisters, Nettie Proffit Miller of Laurel Springs and Jewel Proffit of Elk Creek; and four brothers, Seth Proffit and Wayne Proffit of Lenoir, Paul Proffit of Wilkes County and Ray Proffit of Logan, Utah. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Paul William Gregory of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard Brent and Lynda Ray Gregory of Charlotte; a grandson, Thomas Wayne Russell of Charlotte; two brothers and sisters-in-law, the Rev. Van and Julia Proffit of Ferguson and Bill and Kathryn Proffit of Ogden, Utah; a sister-in-law, Marie Proffit of Lenoir; and numerous nieces and nephews. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Mountain View Baptist Church, P.O. Box 47, Hays, NC 28635.
