JOHNSON
Mrs. Roberta Gaydon Johnson, formerly of 323 Forest Hill Ave., went home be with the Lord on Tuesday evening, Feb. 13, 2001, at Springwood Care Nursing Center. She was a lifelong resident of Winston-Salem, where she attended the public schools. Mrs. Johnson was a retired employee of the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County public schools and a member of St. John CME Church, where she served on the senior choir, stewardess board and Sunday school department. She was a former member of the Pittsburg Avenue Flower Club. Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Johnson Sr. and a daughter, Judy Johnson Wilborn. She is survived by two daughters, Shirley (Robert) Stowe and Janice Johnson, all of Winston-Salem; three sons, Alphonso (Geraldine) Gaydon of Winston-Salem, Clarence Johnson Jr. of Gastonia and Christopher (Vera) Johnson of Winston-Salem; 13 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mildred Hairston; two devoted friends, Virginia Allen and Melton McClinton of Winston-Salem; and a host of close nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services for Mrs. Johnson will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, at St. John CME Church with the Rev. Bobby Best officiating. Interment will follow in the Evergreen cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service hour (10:30-11a.m.) at the church. The funeral cortege will assemble at the residence at 10 a.m. Saturday. (Hooper)

ARARAT - Mrs. Zita Maude Johnson Johnson, 89, of Route 1, Box 879 died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2001, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. Mrs. Johnson was born March 9, 1911, in Surry County to the late John Henry Johnson and Amanda Marie Watson Johnson. She was a homemaker and a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church. Mrs. Johnson is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Janie and Earl R. Bowman of Pilot Mountain; a son-in-law and wife, Jerry and Ruby Smith of Pilot Mountain; three grand-children, Vicki and Tommy Yokley and Chuck and Beneigh Johnson of Pilot Mountain and Keith and Susan Smith of Wake Forest; a great-grandchild, Selena Lynn Yokley of Pilot Mountain; and five sisters and a brother-in-law, Mollie Johnson Watson, Annie Johnson Watson, Ollie Johnson Johnson and Maye and Cecil Atkins of Ararat and Faye Johnson Inman of Pilot Mountain; In addition to her parents, Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her husband, Walter M. Johnson; daughter Polly Ann Johnson Smith; sister Lula Johnson Flinchum; and three brothers, Coley Johnson, Caleb Johnson and Raymond Johnson. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, at Howell Funeral Chapel in Pilot Mountain, conducted by the Rev. Mitchell Pruitt and the Rev. F. Eugene Sherrill. LEXINGTON - Mr. James Edward "Jim" Latham, 69, of 124 Valleyview Drive died at 5:07 a.m. Friday, Feb. 16, at Forsyth Medical Center after declining health of two years. Funeral services will be 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, at Bethesda United Methodist Church, where he was a member. Dr. James White will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. He was born April 2, 1931, in Davidson County to Edgar Ray Latham Sr. and Nora Biesecker Latham. Mr. Latham was past president and a charter member of Welcome Lions Club, where he received the Key Member Award. He was a Jack Stickley Fellow and a Melvin Jones Fellow. Mr. Latham was co-owner of Latham-Hall Corp. He was preceded in death by a brother, E. Ray Latham Jr. Surviving are his wife, Florence Marble Latham of the home; daughters Jeanna Dellinger and husband Gary and Jamela Everhart and husband John, all of Lexington; grandchildren Zac Everhart of Charlotte, Mitch Dellinger of Lexington and Jake Dellinger and wife Crystal of Lexington; his mother, Nora Latham of Brookstone Retirement Home; and a sister, Susie Reynolds and husband Floyd of Greensboro. MATTERNES
Mrs. Jean Shipman Matternes passed away Feb. 15, 2001, after a lengthy illness. She was born May 14, 1934, to David and Reba Folmar in Williamsport, Pa. Jean worked for the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school system for many years and was a devoted servant of the Lord. She leaves behind her husband, Jim Matternes of Winston-Salem; two daughters, Peggy Agee of Meadows of Dan, Va., and Barbara Lowery of Winston-Salem; three sons, Donald Shipman of Dobson, Walter "Bucky" Shipman of Advance and Robin Shipman of Winston-Salem; and two stepchildren, Becky Smith of Conway, S.C., and Bryson Matternes of Atlanta, Ga. Also surviving are two sisters, Gayle Thomson of Pennsylvania and Carol Moses of Texas; a brother, David P. Folmar of Advance; along with a host of nieces, nephews and grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 18, at South Fork Church of Christ, 205 Keating Drive. NANCE
Elizabeth Wall Nance was born in High Point, the daughter of Addison Eugene and Daisy Hyatt Wall, and spent her life there until her marriage to Richmond Reid Nance on April 16, 1937. Since that date, she and Reid have made their home in Winston-Salem. She and Reid joined Ardmore United Methodist Church in 1938 and remained until her death. She was active in the church as long as her health permitted. She was employed by the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school system for many years. She is survived by her husband; a daughter, Nancy Nance Stahl and son-in-law Robert Stahl of Chandler, Ariz. Contributions may be made to Ardmore United Methodist Church, 630 S. KERNERSVILLE - Miss Mary Dawn Parnell, 69, died Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001, at Bradford Village East. She was born on Aug. 7, 1931, in Forsyth County, a daughter of the late Carl Wesley Parnell and Emma Lee Hedgecock Parnell. She was a member of Saints Delight Primitive Baptist Church. She is survived by her mother, Emma Lee Parnell of Winston-Salem; a brother, Wesley G. Parnell and wife Sarah of Winston-Salem; a niece, Robin Scott and husband Mike; a nephew, Rick Parnell and wife Lynn; a grandniece Michelle Scott; and two grandnephews, Kyle Scott and Neal Parnell. A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, at Saints Delight Primitive Baptist Church by Elder J.A. Langham and Elder David Hogan. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. ARARAT - Mrs. Elzie Viola Reynolds, 89, of 243 Nurse Road passed away Thursday evening, Feb. 15, 2001, at Yadkin Nursing Care Center in Yadkinville. She was born Dec. 11, 1911, in Surry County to William Coleman and Lucy Bryant Reynolds. She was a homemaker, retired farmer and worked for Barber Hosiery Mill and a member of Rock Hill Baptist Church. Survivors are a brother and special sister-in-law. Bartie C Reynolds and wife Maude of Ararat; a sister-in-law, Hazel Reynolds of Greensboro; 18 special nieces; and seven special nephews. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, at Rock Hill Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Harris Easter. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. KERNERSVILLE - Mr. Thomas Elwood Sears Sr., 67, of 800 Old Winston Road died unexpectedly Friday, Feb. 16, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Funeral services will be conducted 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, at the Kernersville First Baptist Church by the Rev. Sam Murphy. PINNACLE - Mr. John Fletcher Shelton, 94, Route 2, Corner Road, Shoals Community passed away Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. Mr. Shelton was born in Stokes County on Sept. 26, 1906, to James T. and Maggie McHone Shelton. He was a farmer and of the Baptist faith. Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Lois and Wayne Tilley of Westfield and Glenna and Dwight Bullington of Pinnacle; four sons and daughters-in-law, Eugene and Betty Shelton of Pinnacle, Wayne and Hilda Shelton of Rural Hall and John Roger and Glenda Shelton and Kenneth and Susan Shelton of Pilot Mountain; 14 grandchildren; a stepgrandchild; 18 great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Virginia Inman of Westfield, Cordella and Garland Bryant of Ararat and Marie Burch of Mount Airy; a brother-in-law, Gene Heath of Pilot Mountain; and three special caregivers, Maxie Hudson, Anna Lee Kidd and Tammy O'Neal. Mr. Shelton was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Sadie Mae Beck Shelton; two brothers; and two sisters. YADKINVILLE - Mrs. Wanda Faye Gordon Steelman, 42, of Ray T. Moore Road passed away Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001, at her home. She was born Feb. 1, 1959, in Forsyth County to the late James Riley and Ola Gay Bullins Gordon. Mrs. Steelman was preceded in death by two children, Jamie Watson and Ashley Steelman. Surviving are her husband, Ricky Dale Steelman of the home; three children, Randy Watson, Mitch Steelman and Richard Steelman, all of the home; two sisters, Brenda Gordon of Fall Creek and Glenda Starling of East Bend; three brothers, Benny Gordon and Joey Gordon of Hamptonville and James Gordon of Dobson; and several nieces and nephews. LEXINGTON - Eran Aurbrey Stiers, 17, of Giles Road died Wednesday from injuries received in an automobile accident. A graveside service will be 4 p.m. Saturday at Lexington City cemetery conducted by the Rev. B. Joe Parker. Mr. Stiers was born Sept. 27, 1983, in Springfield, Ill. to Ronnie Lewis Hutchinson and Maria Lynn Denig Stiers. Eran was a student at West Davidson High School, where he was a member of the soccer team and enjoyed skateboarding and music. Surviving are his father, Ronnie Lewis Hutchinson of Lexington; his mother and stepfather, Maria Lynn Denig Williams and James Scott Williams of Winston-Salem; brothers Anthony Stiers of Lexington and Ryan Hutchinson of Advance; sisters Stephanie Stiers and Morgan Hutchinson of Lexington; several aunts and uncles; grandmother Florence Frohlich of Muskeegan, Mich.; stepgrandparents Carol and Earl Williams of Winston-Salem and James Howard and Debbie Elmore of Wichita, Kan.; and great-grandmothers Ethel Williams of Winston-Salem and Leona Elmore of Houston, Mo. WEST JEFFERSON - Mr. Dallas Sturgill, 67, died Wednesday night, Feb. 14, 2001, at Lakeland Regional Hospital in Florida. Frank Kellock Vance, 81, of Winston-Salem died Feb. 15, 2001, at his home. He was born Nov. 27, 1919, in Winston-Salem, a son of Horace H. and Kate Huske Vance. He was a graduate of N.C. State University in 1943 with a degree in electrical engineering. He was a member of Mu Beta Psi Honorary Musical Fraternity and Sigma Pi Sigma. After graduating he worked during the war for the Division of Physical War Research under the National Defense Research Institute. In 1946 he went to work for Western Electric and retired in 1975. He was a member of Winston-Salem Engineers Club, Telephone Pioneers, Friends of Old Salem, North Carolina Zoological Society and Home Moravian Church. Mr. Vance loved his hobbies, including hunting, fishing, world traveling and scouring flea markets and auctions for bargains. He was married Sept. 20, 1945, to Jessie Louise Stealey. She died March 5, 1975. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Anna Vance Jones, and her husband, Doug, of Atlanta, Ga.; a son, Frank K. (Lock) Vance Jr., and his wife, Debbie, of Jacksonville, Fla.; two brothers, Horace H. Vance Jr. and Thomas H. Vance, both of Winston-Salem; a brother-in-law, Dr. S.L. Stealey Jr. of Fairbanks, Ala.; three grandchildren; and a great-grand-daughter. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 19, 2001, in God's Acre in Salem by the Rev. Scott Venable. Mr. Lawrence Edgar "Buck" York Jr., 78, of Winston-Salem died Friday, Feb. 16, 2001, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born April 27, 1922, in Cherokee County to Lawrence Edgar York Sr. and Mary Baker York. Mr. York was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II and was retired from Allied Systems in Walkertown. Surviving are a daughter, Susan King and husband Ronald of Boonville; a son, John Thomas York and wife Jane of Greensboro; and six grandchildren, Candace King of Greenville, S.C., Justin King and Jennifer King of Boonville, Elizabeth York, Kathryn York and Rachel York, all of Greensboro. Funeral services will be 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. Zeno Groce and the Rev. Clay Tucker officiating. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. KENSINGTON, Md. - Nancy Fishel Cannon, 65, born in Winston-Salem, died Feb. 10, 2001, in Kensington, Md. She was the beloved wife of Richard R. Cannon Sr., loving mother of Richard R. Cannon Jr., David Cannon, Martha Lake and John Cannon, loving daughter of Anna Fishel and the late William Fishel and sister of Eleanor Johnson, Starr Hendel and William and Steven Fishel. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren. Friends may call at Hines-Rinaldi Funeral Home, 11800 New Hampshire Ave., Silver Spring, Md., 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday.
