DICKERSON

Mrs. Margie Williams Dickerson of 2117 Joe Louis Ave., Greensboro died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mrs. Dickerson lived with her daughter, Mrs. Gwendolyn White at 1737 Carriage Cove Lane in Winston-Salem since 1993. Funeral services will be held at noon Thursday, Feb. 15, at Hayes Memorial United Holy Church in Greensboro. Visitation will be held at 11:30 a.m. and all other times the family will be at 2117 Joe Louis Ave., Greensboro. Burial will follow in Beechwood cemetery, Durham. Survivors include two sons, Bernard Gerald Dickerson and Kenneth Wayne Dickerson of Greensboro; a daughter, Mrs. Gwendolyn White of Winston-Salem; a grandson, Terrence Leon Knight of Snellville, Ga.; a brother, Herbert Williams of Jersey City, N.J.; three sisters, Mrs. Kate W. Watson of Durham, Mrs. Bobbie Jean Williams of Dresher, Pa., and Zelma Lee Williams Campbell of Yonkers, N.Y.; and 10 great-grandchildren. Perry J. Brown Funeral Home, Greensboro, is in charge of arrangements.

DOWELL

Mrs. Ruth Holden Dowell, 83, of Winston-Salem passed away Sunday, Feb. 11, 2001. She was born to the late C.C. Holden and Lillian Belle Coultrane Holden on May 17, 1917, in Winston-Salem. She was married to Hilary Franklin Reich. He preceded her in death in 1943. Later she married George D. Dowell. She was a member of Home Moravian Church. She is survived by three sons, Frank Reich of Anaheim, Calif., John Reich of Las Vegas, Nev., and Mike Dowell of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Mrs. Alma Shore of Greenville, S.C., and Mrs. Hilda Burton of Winston-Salem; and three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 13, at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel. The Rev. C. Scott Venable III will officiate. Interment will follow at the Moravian Graveyard.

FISHER

Mr. Clinton Rowe Fisher, 66, of Winston-Salem died Sunday, Feb. 11, 2001, unexpectedly at his home. Mr. Fisher was born in Rowan County on Sept. 12, 1934, to Pauline Koon Fisher and the late Clinton Rowe Fisher. He was preceded in death by his father. He attended Lenoir Rhyne College and retired from RJR Tobacco Co. in 1987. He served in the U.S. Army 1955-1957. Surviving are his wife Mary Helen Fisher of the home; one daughter, Anne Smith of Winston-Salem; one son, Clinton Scott Fisher of Lowgap; three grandchildren, Lindsey, Chelsea and Brandon Smith of Winston-Salem; his mother Pauline K. Fisher; one brother, David Monroe Fisher of Jamestown; and two sisters, Karen Fisher Preddy and Carol Fisher Carter of Thomasville. There will be a graveside service 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 13, at Forsyth Memorial Park with Pastor Stephen Gerhard officiating. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 25086 Winston-Salem, NC 27114. Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is serving the family.

GOFF

Clinton Goff, 60, of Midway School Road, Winston-Salem, died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001, in Forsyth Memorial Hospital after an illness of three weeks. Mr. Goff was born in Horry County, S.C., Feb. 18, 1940, to Cleo Goff and Lillie Belle Todd Goff. He was a retired employee of Sara Lee Knitting in Winston-Salem. Survivors include his wife, Claudia McCoin Goff of the home; daughter Jeanette Vause of Mullins, S.C., brother Boyd Goff of Florida, sisters Ms. Genice Goff and Mrs. Linda Inman, both of Conway, S.C., three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 13, conducted by the Rev. Glen E. Hawkins at Davidson Funeral Home Hickory Tree Chapel. Burial will be at Parklawn Memorial Gardens, Winston-Salem. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Monday at Davidson Funeral Home Hickory Tree Chapel. At other times they will be at the home on Midway School Road. Davidson Funeral Home Hickory Tree Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

GUY

Frances Burnette Roberts Guy, 88, of 2601 Reynolda Road, Apt. 351, Winston-Salem, formerly of New Bern and Edisto Island, S.C., died Feb. 10, 2001. Mrs. Guy was born in Norfolk, Va., on Dec. 10, 1912, to Charles Lightfoot Roberts and Doris Estelle Burnette. Mrs. Guy was a retired accountant and worked with her husband in the hotel business in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas and the Bahamas. Mrs. Guy was an active Episcopal lay person serving many years in Trinity Episcopal Church, Edisto Island, S.C., as a Vestry member, officer of the Episcopal Church Women's group and was honored in 1985 as a life member of the International Order of King's Daughters and Sons. She was currently a member of St. Anne's Episcopal Church, Winston-Salem. She was preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin Harrison "Pie" Guy; a brother, Charles A. Roberts; and two sisters, Lillian Dunn Costenbader and Mae Roberts Furney. Survivors include a brother, Stanley M. Roberts of Virginia Beach, Va.; eight nieces and nephews; and a number of great- and great-great-nieces and nephews. A memorial service and interment will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church, Edisto Island, S.C. Date is to be determined. Memorials may be made to St. Anne's Episcopal Church, P.O. JOHNSON

Mr. Jack Kent Johnson, retired psychotherapist, 76, died after a period of illness Feb. 9, 2001. He resided in Sugar Hill, Ga., since 1995. A native of Winston-Salem, he graduated from Mineral Springs High School, and subsequently graduated from Wake Forest University in 1950. He received a master's degree in psychotherapy in 1953 from Tulane University, New Orleans, La. He was a former member and psychotherapist at Bowman Gray School of Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem. In 1958, he and his family relocated to Jacksonville, Fla., where he initiated the establishment of Duval County Mental Health Clinic, subsequently serving as the assistant director for 15 years. He later went into private practice as a psychotherapist. He was also a consultant and employee-assistance program director for Anheuser-Busch Cos. and Baptist Medical Center in Jacksonville for many years prior to disability retirement in early 1994. Mr. Johnson served in the military service for 34 months from 1943 to 1945, following which he returned to Winston-Salem and was married to Marjorie Carolyn Ziglar in January 1946. He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Marjorie McAleer; granddaughter and her husband, Kelly and Allen Smith; a great-granddaughter, Morgan Taylor Smith, all of Sugar Hill, Ga.; and a grandson and his wife, Michael and Peggy McAleer of Durham, N.H. He was predeceased by two sons, Johnny and Dean Johnson. Jack was a son of William Fred and Blannis Gordon Johnson of Winston-Salem, both deceased. His two brothers, Connette and Harold Johnson, reside in Winston-Salem. His father-in-law, Ralph W. Ziglar (age 101), resides in Jacksonville, Fla. He has many other family members in and near Winston-Salem and Jacksonville, as well as many loving friends, colleagues and grateful patients. Mr. Johnson and his family were former members of the South Jacksonville Presbyterian Church, where for many years he was a Bible teacher in the adolescents department, as well as an active member of the church and choir. He was formerly a member of Mineral Springs Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, where he and his wife were married in 1946. Funeral services will be held in Winston-Salem at Vogler Funeral Home, Reynolda Road, at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001, with Dr. Cecil Cave officiating. The interment will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Vogler Funeral Home, 2951 Reynolda Road, Winston-Salem, Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. Those wishing to do so may make a donation in memory of Jack Kent Johnson to Mineral Springs Baptist Church, 3733 Ogburn Ave., Winston-Salem, or to the Bowman Gray School of Medicine, Winston-Salem.

MELLOW

ROARING GAP - Joseph Anthony Mellow, M.D., of Roaring Gap died Feb. 9, 2001, husband of Suzanne R. Mellow. He was born in Mayfield, Pa., a town 10 miles north of Scranton, Pa., May 5, 1912. His parents were Orazio Meliado and Mary Caracciolo. Surviving brothers and spouses are Dr. Emil Mellow and Inez Mellow of Satellite Beach, Fla., Anthony and Eleanor Mellow of Peckville, Pa.; sister Mrs. Catherine and deceased brother-in-law Louis Alimenti of Old Forge, Pa.; sister-in-law Vivienne Fulford of Fairfax Station, Va., and brother-in-law Lewis Tricarick of Troy, N.Y.; sister and brother-in-law Dr. Lee and Carole Janizcek; stepmother Irene Varano of Wynnewood, Pa.; stepbrother Peter and wife Gloria Taraborelli; and stepbrother Robert Taraborelli of Wynnewood, Pa. His first wife Muriel and two brothers, Dominic and Frank, and son-in-law John Tramontano preceded him in death. Children are Mrs. Mary Louise Tramontano of Erie, Pa., Joanne and husband Al Jacovec of Winston-Salem and Joseph Mellow Jr. and wife Donna of Pinnacle. Grandchildren are John, Craig, Tracy, Suzanne, Laura, Brittany and Carson, and great-grandchildren are Chelsey, Jarred and Carly. Dr. Mellow graduated from Fordham University in 1934 and New York Medical College in 1938. Prior to World War II Dr. Mellow interned at Yonkers General Hospital and was a resident at Flower Fifth Avenue Hospital, Mineola, N.Y., and Metropolitan Hospital in New York City specializing in Ob-Gyn. In 1940 Dr. Mellow married Muriel Tricarick and lived in Port Washington, N.Y., where he began his practice until the beginning of World War II. In 1942 Dr. Mellow sailed from Charleston, S.C., to the island of Bora-Bora where he was stationed until 1944. From 1947 until 1973 as a Board Certified Ob-Gyn Specialist he served in many capacities of leadership including chief of staff and chief of Ob-gyn department at Nassau County Medical Center in Manhasset, N.Y. Dr. Mellow was also on the staff of the North Shore University Hospital and St. Frances Hospital, both in Manhasset. Dr. Mellow was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and the American Medical Association (AMA). He was a member emeritus of the Alumni Association of New York Medical College. While in Port Washington he was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church, an active member and avid golfer of the North Hempstead Country Club and a member of the Long Island Pigeon Association. In 1973 Dr. Mellow married Suzanne R. Varano and resided in the golf resort complex of High Meadows in Roaring Gap. From 1974 to 1979 he had a private medical practice in Elkin and was on the staff of the Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. In 1979 Dr. Mellow retired but continued to serve the local community in various ways. Along with his friend of 60 years, Dr. Joseph Teta, he assisted the Alleghany County Schools as a sports physician. He also served as the doctor for the Cherry Lane Volunteer Fire Department. Being a great enthusiast for the game of golf, he was active in the High Meadows Men's Golf Association and served as co-chairman for the handicap committee. As a member of St. Frances of Rome Catholic Church in Sparta, he served as chairman of the Parish Council. For over 50 years Dr. Mellow belonged to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Legion in New York and continued to be active in the Sparta Post of #7034 as health prevailed. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Alleghany Educational Foundation, c/o Lib Goodman, P.O. Box 38, Sparta, NC 28675, so that the Dr. Joseph A. Mellow Scholarship may be established for a student entering the medical profession, or to St. Frances of Rome Catholic Church, Highland Drive, Sparta, NC 28675. Funeral services will be Tuesday, Feb. 13, at St. Frances of Rome Catholic Church, Sparta. Viewing is at 9 a.m., and Mass of the Resurrection at 10 a.m. Burial will be in the Antioch Methodist Church in Roaring Gap immediately following the Mass with military rites by the Bruce Wayne Osborne VFW Post #7034. Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

PINNIX

RONDA - Mrs. Augusta Alice Shore Pinnix, 92, passed away Monday, Feb. 12, 2001, at the Yadkin Nursing Center. She was born April 19, 1908, in Iredell County to the late Aldophus A. and Nancy Ireland Shore. Mrs. Pinnix was a housewife and nurse-aide and was a member of Temple Hill United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Milo M. Pinnix; a stepdaughter, Vera P. Hudson; three sisters, Maude Tedder, Collie Henderson and Dovie Spann; and three brothers, Press Shore, Roy Shore and Blume Shore. Surviving are her children, Dorman C. (Leamer) Pinnix of Ronda, Emma L. (Harry) Parker of Gardendale, Ala., Muriel J. Chambers, Almedia B. Ireland and Etta (Brother Johnny) Arnold, all of Ronda; a sister, Daisy Shore of Dobson; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Her funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Deliverance Baptist Church by Brother Johnny Arnold. She will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in the Temple Hill United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Gentry Family Funeral Service on Little Mountain Road in Jonesville.

ROOPE

ELKIN - Mrs. Grace Ellen Roope, 89, of 4622 Frandale Drive, Winston-Salem, passed away Monday, Feb. 12, 2001, at Forsyth Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Roope was born April 6, 1911, in Surry County to Morgan Reynolds and Lillian Cockerham Reynolds. Mrs. Roope was a member of Center Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband, Mr. Garnist Roope of the home; a daughter, Mrs. Lee and G. Ivan Byrd of Winston-Salem; and a host of loving nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2001, at Center Baptist Church by the Rev. Jerry Adams and the Rev. Jeff Cleary. Mrs. Roope will lie in state from 12:30 to 1 p.m. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, at Johnson Funeral Home Chapel.

SPAINHOUR

Mrs. Katharyn Foltz Spainhour, 80, died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Spainhour was born Sept. 12, 1920, to Robert Franklin Foltz Sr. and Sarah Sink Foltz. She was of the Moravian faith and was retired from Piedmont Airlines as an employee-benefits representative. Mrs. Spainhour was preceded in death by her husband, Donald C. Spainhour. Survivors are daughter Sarah H. Thompson and son-in-law O.L. "Bud" Thompson III, both of Las Vegas, Nev.; three grandchildren, Gary W. Adams Jr., Vance B. Adams and Sandra L. Adams; two great-grandchildren, Kate C. Adams and Jacob C. Adams; and a number of nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14, at the Moravian Graveyard with the Rev. Keith White officiating.

THORPE

Mrs. Margaret Hutchens Thorpe, 78, of Winston-Salem died Sunday, Feb. 11, 2001, at The Oaks at Forsyth. She was born in Yadkin County to the late Herman and Nancy Ashley Hutchens. Mrs. Thorpe was a retired self-employed beautician. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and the Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alva John Thorpe. Mrs. Thorpe is survived by a daughter, Deborah Boose of Winston-Salem; two sons, Robert Allen Thorpe of Indianapolis and Michael David Thorpe of California; three grandchildren, John, Travis and Elizabeth; and two sisters, Charlie Mae Cornelius of Yadkinville, and Nancy Nell Reavis of Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel by the Rev. Donald Mann. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

WAGNER

SANDY RIDGE - Mr. William Stanley Wagner, 54, traded his old body for a heavenly one Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001. He was born in Rockingham County to the late William Martin Wagner and Mountie Marie Hicks Wagner. He was a member of Lawsonville Baptist Church, was a carpenter by trade and enjoyed golf. Mr. Wagner was a loving husband and father and a devoted grandfather. Preceding him in death were his father and a sister, Barbara Ann Wagner Wade. In addition to his mother of Pine Hall, he is survived by his wife of 32 years, Sahara Jane Nance Wagner of the home; two daughters, Melinda Jane Wagner Lankford and husband Jerry of Madison and Angela Lynn Wagner McHone and husband Donald of Danbury; a sister, Edith Wagner Sisk and husband Larry of Stoneville; three brothers, Jackie Wagner and wife Carolyn of Mayodan, Casey Wagner and wife Geraldine of Madison and Tony Wagner of Pine Hall; three grandchildren, Johnathan, Matthew and Katie McHone; and numerous nieces and nephews. An 11 a.m. funeral service will be held Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2001, at Burroughs Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in the Gardens of Memory, Walkertown. His sons-in-law will officiate. WALTERS

GREENSBORO - Warren William "Bud" Walters Jr., 86, of 409 S. Elam Ave. died Sunday morning in Wesley Long Hospital. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at First Moravian Church. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn cemetery. Bud was born Feb. 8, 1915, in Trappe, Pa., and graduated in 1938 from Ursinus College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry. During World War II he served in the Army Air Corps in India and the South Pacific as a navigator of B-29s in the 22nd Squadron of the 40th Bomb Group of the 20th Air Command. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with Oakleaf Cluster. He retired from the U.S. Air Force Reserve with the rank of lieutenant colonel. A past Post Commander, he was a member of American Legion Post 53 and also a life member of the Forty and Eight. He was an amateur radio operator, call number W4NLR. After retirement from long service as a manufacturing engineer with Western Electric, he served for many years as a volunteer custodian of First Moravian Church of which he had been a member for 46 years. Bud Walters was a brave soldier and a loving father. He is survived by his sister Geraldine McElhinney of Silver Spring, Md., by his devoted children, Agnes Jane Walters Gutsell and husband James B. of Greensboro, Gail Walters Patella and husband Vincent of Winston-Salem and Warren William Walters III of Greensboro, by four grandchildren, Richard, James, Edward Patella and Anna Bengal, by two stepgrandchildren, Reeve and Sabina Gutsell and by three great-grandchildren, Vincent, Andrew and Patrick Patella. The family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Hanes-Lineberry N. Elm St. Chapel in Greensboro and following the service at his residence.

BLAKELEY

Mr. Vernon Monroe Blakeley, 77, of 5689 Joyce Norman Road died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born in Yadkin County on Sept. 8, 1923, to John and Ethel Douglas Blakeley. Mr. Blakeley was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church. He was retired from Smitherman Oil Co. and was preceded in death by two sons Ferrell Blakeley and Mark Blakeley. Surviving are his wife, Thelma Long Blakeley of the home; two daughters, Shirley Blakeley Bridges of Germanton and Betty Ann Blakeley of Pfafftown; three sisters, Adeline Sapp of Pfafftown, Gladys Hawks of Rural Hall and Nell Arrington of Winston-Salem; two brothers, Floyd Blakeley of Winston-Salem and Kenneth Blakeley of Stanleyville; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001, at the Huff Funeral Home Chapel in East Bend by the Rev. George Presson. Burial will follow in the New Bethel Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9:00 Tuesday evening at Huff Funeral Home in East Bend.

BROWN

NORTH WILKESBORO - Mrs. Grace Dean Rhoades Brown, 78, of Speedway Road died Sunday, Feb. 4, at Wilkes Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Brown was born Feb. 20, 1922, in Wilkes County to Wiley Martin and Adie Mae Myers Rhoades. She was a member of Old Fashion Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by a son, Wiley Vestal Brown. Surviving are a son, Wayne Andrew Brown of Moravian Falls; four daughters, Christine Ham and Carol Minton of North Wilkesboro, Cathy Anderson of Wilkesboro and Sandra Kidd of Taylorsville; two brothers, J.C. Rhoades of Bossier City, La., and Claude Rhoades of Millers Creek; two sisters, Gladys Wagoner and Mae Curry of North Wilkesboro; 17 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. today, Tuesday, Feb. 6, at Miller Funeral Chapel in North Wilkesboro with the Rev. Ralph Winters and the Rev. Phillip Carter officiating. Burial will be in Scenic Memorial Gardens.

CHEEK

Mr. Sherrill McKinley Cheek, 85, of Courtney died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, at his home. He was born March 15, 1915, in Yadkin County to Sanford and Dona Gregory Cheek. Mr. Cheek was of the Baptist faith and was a former member of Hanes Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie Cheek; a grandson, Mark Numa; four brothers and five sisters. Surviving are two sons, Billy Cheek and Cromer Cheek and wife Patricia all of Courtney; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Will Cheek of Winston-Salem; and a sister, Tishie Shields of Kernersville. Funeral services will be 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel with the Rev. Jessie McEwen officiating. Burial will follow in Westlawn Gardens of Memory. CREWS

Mr. Justice Ashburn Crews Sr., 86, of Winston-Salem, died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001, at Wilkes Regional Medical Center. He was born April 16, 1914, in Forsyth County to James Madison and Louisa Victoria Matthews Crews. Mr. Crews was a member of Bunker Hill Primitive Baptist Church and a former member of the Winston-Salem Symphony Orchestra. Preceding Mr. Crews in death are his wife Ruby Griffin Crews and a daughter, Judy Lane Atwood. Surviving are four sons, Lamar Crews and wife Evazell of Wilkesboro, Justice A. "Bernie" Crews and wife Sherry of Hickory, Daniel A. Crews and wife Patsy of Lexington and Robert W. "Bobrow" Crews and wife Susan of Pittsboro; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel by Elder J.A. Langham. Burial will follow in Saints Delight Primitive Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
