GLENN

Robert Brown Glenn of Heritage Woods Retirement Community died Feb. 3, 2001, at Baptist Hospital. He was born Oct. 9, 1917, in New Bern, the son of Bessie Brown and John Andrew Glenn and was a lifelong resident of Winston-Salem. In 1946 he married Nancy Urquhart Glenn, who died in 1994. In World War II he served in the Army Air Corps in the European Theater. In 1985 he retired as president and chairman of the board of Piedmont Leaf Tobacco Co. after 38 years of service. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Winston-Salem. He is survived by two daughters, Linda Glenn Bettis and husband H. Lee Bettis Jr. of Winston-Salem and Nancy Susan Glenn of Walnut Cove; one son, Robert Brown Glenn Jr. and his wife Connie Winstead of Durham; four grandchildren, Katherine Glenn McConnell and husband John Daniel McConnell II of Raleigh, Lindsay Paige Truluck of Charlotte and Matthew Winstead Glenn and David Winstead Glenn, both of Durham; three sisters, Carol Glenn Winder and Eleanor Glenn Kennelly of Winston-Salem and Betsy Glenn Cates of Clanton, Ala.; and two brothers, John Andrew Glenn of Winston-Salem and William Brown Glenn of Greenville. His brother Henry Preston Glenn of Winston-Salem preceded him in death. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, at Vogler's Chapel, 2951 Reynolda Road. That afternoon following the graveside service the family will receive friends at the home of his daughter Linda Bettis. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the J. Paul Sticht Center on Aging and Rehabilitation or to a charity of the donor's choice.

GOODEN

Mrs. Ardell P. Gooden, 95, formerly of 108 Washington Ave., Lexington, departed this life (to begin her new life) Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, in Winston-Salem. Mrs. Gooden was born in Chesterfield, S.C., Dec. 19, 1905, to Bessie Powe and David William Pegues. Mrs. Gooden was a member of Union Baptist Church in Lexington where she was a member of the missionary circle and the pastor's aide and served on the usher board. Mrs. Gooden was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Johnny Jack Gooden; loving daughter, Willie Mae Hairston; grandson Calvin A. Hairston; and sisters Rosa Lee McCoy Pratt, Willie Mae Jackson and Charlotta Smith. Surviving relatives who shall treasure and cherish her memory include grandchildren Willie B. Hairston B. (Bea) Hairston, Youvonne H. Hall, Brenda P. Curlee, Ardell H. Sloan (Roger), Johnny C. Hairston, Mary H. Huff and Charlotta H. Gilley (Bryce); son-in-law Berline C. Hairston; a loving and devoted niece, Betty McDonald (William); 15 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and loving friends. Visitation will begin with the family at 2:30 p.m. and followed by the funeral service at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001, at Morrison-Studevent Funeral Home, 707 Holt St., Lexington. Relatives will receive friends at the home of Charlotta Gilley, 517 Liberty Ave., Lexington.

HOLDER

PINEHURST - Mrs. Ruth Smith Holder, 76, died at Manor House on Feb. 4, 2001. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Pinebuff cemetery with the Rev. Hudson officiating. Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Pearl S. Montgomery of Germanton. Memorials may be made to FirstHealth Hospice, P.O. Box 1956, Pinehurst, NC 28370. Powell Funeral Home of Southern Pines is serving the family.

JERRELD

EAST BEND - Mrs. Erma Jane Anson Jerreld, 71, of 5449 Macedonia Road died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Mrs. Jerreld was born in Utica, N.Y. Nov. 14, 1929, to Arlo Robert and Fannie Marjorie Martineau Anson. She retired from Walt Disney World after 20 years of service. She also worked for Walmart in Kissimee, Fla. for two years. She was a member of North Kissimee Baptist Church. Mrs. Jerreld was preceded in death by her husband, Edward James Jerreld Sr. She is survived by two daughters, Erma J. Boswell of Steamboat Springs, Colo. and Ellen J. Lindsay of East Bend; a son, Edward J. Jerreld Jr. of Lithia Springs, Ga.; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a brother, Robert Nicholson of Lantana, Fla. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel with the Rev. J. Marion Rector officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Mrs. Jerreld will be sent to Grissom Funeral Home in Kissimee, Fla. for a graveside service conducted by Dr. Bobby H. Reaves to be held Friday at 11 a.m. in the Osceloa Memorial Gardens.

JOHNSON

EAST BEND - Mr. William Hiram Johnson, 75, of Old Mill Road, passed away Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born in Yadkin County on Oct. 25, 1926, to H.E. and Creola Beane Johnson. Mr. Johnson was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was a deacon and member of Pleasant Grove Primitive Baptist Church for over 30 years. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a signalman. Mr. Johnson was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. as an electrical engineering designer after 34 years. He was clerk of Little Yadkin Association. Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by his parents, son Kenny Johnson, brother Frank N. Johnson and two sisters, Edna Jester and Mary Lee Creech. Surviving are his wife Mary Bridges Johnson of the home; two daughters, Helen (Wayne) Edwards and Cynthia (Buddy) Glasscoe, both of East Bend; one sister, Ruth (John) Choplin of Yadkinville; six grandchildren, Chris Reavis of Yadkinville, Dustin Glasscoe of Colorado, Daniel Edwards, Jamie Edwards, Victoria Edwards and Wade Brown, all of East Bend; and two great-grandchildren, Jason Brown of East Bend and Tyler Reavis of Yadkinville. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001, at the Huff Funeral Home Chapel in East Bend by Elder Vance Jones, Elder Scotty Marshall, Elder Rodney Marshall and Elder David Edwards. Burial will follow in the Allen-Johnson Family cemetery.

KENNEDY

ELKIN - In memory of our loving, devoted wife and mother. Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Kennedy, 74, of Oakland Drive passed away Monday Feb. 5, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Mrs. Kennedy was born Jan. 10, 1927, in Yadkin County to Wesley Franklin and Carrie Gentry Dobbins. Mrs. Kennedy was retired from Chatham Manufacturing and was a member of Calvary Wesleyan Church. Mrs. Kennedy was preceded in death by her father. Survivors include her husband, Paul Kennedy of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law; the Rev. Greg and Deana Kennedy and Phil and Wanda Kennedy, all of Greenville; her mother, Carrie Dobbins of High Point; three brothers, Charles Dobbins of Yadkinville, John Dobbins of Boonville and Wes Dobbins Jr. of Clemmons; three sisters, Doris Lowe of High Point, Marie Eaton of Rockford and Barbara Adams of Pfafftown; and four grandchildren, Aaron, Miriam, Rion and Casey Kennedy. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001, at Calvary Wesleyan Church by the Rev. Jessie Garmon. Mrs. Kennedy will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow at Central Full Gospel Church cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7 to 9 at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials may be made to Calvary Wesleyan Church.

KING

Mr. Jeffrey David King Sr., 55, of Winston-Salem died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001. He was born April 30, 1945, in Albany, N.Y., to John Edgar and Lorraine Oostdyke King. Mr. King was a graduate of Hudson Valley College in Troy, N.Y., and Murray State University in Kentucky in 1968. He was vice president of BB&T Bank, in charge of mergers and acquisitions. He was involved with many various charitable organizations, including Muscular Dystrophy Association Fund Raising; Horizon House for emotionally disturbed children; director of the Winston-Salem HOG Chapter (Harley Owners Group); president of Freedom Memorial Wall Committee; board member of March of Dimes Bikers for Babies; Fox 8 Toys for Kids; and Salvation Army Toys for Tots. He was preceded in death by his father in 1984. Surviving are his loving wife, Charo King of the home; two sons, Jeffrey David King Jr. of Winston-Salem and Patrick John King of Raleigh; his mother of Winston-Salem; a brother, John E. King of North Hero Island, Vt.; and many cousins in the Northeast. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Burkhead United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kathie C. Sherrill and Dr. Kenneth M. Johnson officiating. Inurnment will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Burkhead United Methodist Church, 5250 Silas Creek Parkway, Winston-Salem, NC 27106. KOWALSKI

Zofia Elizabeth Kowalski, nee Urbanski, 77, departed this world Sunday morning, Feb. 4, 2001, at the Grace Hospital in Toronto, Canada. She was born July 8, 1923, in Warsaw, Poland. A graduate of the Warsaw College of Commerce, she left Poland with her family for France, fleeing from the German Occupation Forces in 1939. There she met Tadeusz Kowalski whom she married in 1941 in Paris. After the war they returned to Poland where she actively participated in the general effort to rebuild her war-torn country. Until 1958 she was active in the public school administrative system, and consequently immigrated to Canada with her sons and husband to reunite with her family in Toronto. Upon their arrival Mrs. Kowalski started teaching Polish to children of Canadians of Polish extraction in the Queen Street Polish School of the Polish National Union. There, she also co-authored a book of readings for children, which is still used in Canada and the UK. Her skills and compassionate approach made her a memorable role model to all who made contact with her. In 1966, Mrs. Kowalski moved with her husband to Valleyfield, Quebec, and after three years they settled in Ville D'Anjou, Quebec. Mrs. Kowalski returned to Toronto three years ago to live closer to her family and friends. During her stay she was always the role model of a helpful and compassionate friend to all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her husband, Tadeusz Kowalski. She is survived by her son, Adam E. Kaye of Winston-Salem and her two grandchildren, Tamara E. Kaye of Toronto and Mark A. Kaye of Lakewood, N.J. Funeral services will be conducted at the Turner & Porter Roncesvalles Chapel in Toronto on Wednesday, Feb. 7. Her remains will be taken to the family mausoleum at Le Repos Saint Francois d'Assise, rue Sherbrooke in Montreal, Canada. Memorials may be made to the Cancer Patient Support Program at the Wake Forest University Medical Center.

LINDSAY

Mrs. Emma Eller Lindsay, aka Ceickett, of 230 Craver St. passed away Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001, at her residence. She was a native of Davidson County and was a member of Saints Delight Holiness Church. She was a member of the Seniors Club. She is survived by her husband, Albert C. Lindsay; two daughters, Nancy and Flora Lindsay; three sons, Gerome, William and Aldine Lindsay, all of Midway; 16 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a sister, Virginia Lindsay of Winston-Salem; two devoted friends, Katie Tuttle and Reva Leonard, both of Midway; several other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001, from Brooks Temple United Methodist Church, where the Rev. Joseph Jones will officiate, and interment will follow in Saints Delight Holiness Church cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service from 2:30 to 3 p.m. at the church. The family may be contacted at the residence. Arrangements entrusted to Douthit Funeral Services (896-0061).

MARSHALL

KERNERSVILLE - Mrs. Fannie Harrison Marshall, 100, formerly of Union Cross Road, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, at Bradford Village East. She was born Nov. 22, 1900, a daughter of the late Walter and Lucy Perry Harrison. She retired from Adams Millis Corp. and was of the Holiness faith. Mrs. Marshall was preceded in death by her husband, Flay Marshall, and a daughter, Helen Marshall Hill. Surviving are two nieces, Rachel Bowman and Shelba Skiver; a nephew, J.V. Harrison and wife Bobbie, all of Kernersville; and a sister-in-law, Vera Harrison of Madison. A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2000, at Hayworth-Miller-Cain Chapel, Kernersville. Burial will follow in Mount Gur cemetery. The family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

MARTIN

SLAB FORK, W.Va. - Herman D. Martin, 83, died Saturday, Feb. 3, in Beckley, W.Va. Survivors include his wife Mildred M. Martin of Beckley, daughters Vickie Pachuta (John) and Jan Neal of Winston-Salem, sons Franklin H. Martin (Dawn) and C. Warren Martin of Winston-Salem, sisters Pauline Murphy of Winston-Salem, Frieda Eller (Arnold) of Charleston, S.C., four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The body is at Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home in Beckley. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

MOORE

Mrs. May Lee Nelson LaFar Moore, 67, of 1253 Kent Place died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001, at her home. She was born Oct. 26, 1933, in Gaston County to Mary Lee Nelson LaFar and David Robertson LaFar Jr. She graduated from St. Mary's Junior College and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority. She lived in California, Charlottesville, Va., Greensboro, Gastonia, Winston-Salem and Roaring Gap. While in Winston-Salem, she was a member and president of the Twin City Garden Club, the Winston-Salem Debutante Committee and the Colonial Dames of Forsyth County. She volunteered in many civic and community capacities. She was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Mrs. Moore was preceded in death by a child, James Nelson Moore, in 1973. She is survived by two sons, Thomas Owen Moore III and wife Constance Ladd Moore and their children, Thomas Owen Moore IV and George Bennett Moore and Robertson LaFar Moore and wife Elizabeth Archer Moore and their children, David Robertson LaFar Moore and Elizabeth Archer Moore; and by a daughter, Mary Lee Hanes Moore of Raleigh. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel. A private graveside service will be held in Salem cemetery followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church Building Fund, 520 Summit St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101 or to Exploris Middle School, Bird and Butterfly Sculpture Garden, 207 E. Hargett St., Raleigh, NC 27601.

PENNELL

Mr. Jack Pennell, 69, of Winston-Salem died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born April 16, 1931, in Forsyth County to Larna Edith Pennell Mendenhall. Mr. Pennell served with the U.S. Marine Corps. He was employed as a meat cutter at several local grocery stores, including Food Fair, Food Lion and retired from Lowes Foods in 1994. After his retirement he worked part time for Food Lion. He was a loving son, husband and father to his mother of Winston-Salem; his wife, Edna Dyson Pennell of the home; two sons, Randy J. Pennell and wife Vickie and their son, Justin, of Davidson County and Stephen Pennell and wife Trina of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Janet Pennell and her sons, Joshua and Jeremy McNeeb of Yadkinville; two sisters, Jo Ann Ketner and Carolyn Wood and husband Fred of Winston-Salem; brothers-in-law Junior, Jerry, David, Kenneth and George Dyson; a sister-in-law, Linda Dyson, and a number of nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Forsyth Memorial Park by the Rev. J. Marion Rector. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel.

SEAL

On Feb. 4, 2001, Jesus came down, picked up an angel and carried her home to walk the golden streets of Heaven. Mrs. Geraldine Elizabeth Seal, better known to all her friends as Jean, was born Sept. 13, 1933, to Allen and Dora Lowder of Kannapolis. Jean worked at Krispy Kreme for a number of years and enjoyed bowling on a league for the company. She then decided to become a homemaker where she enjoyed making crafts, shopping and traveling. She was preceded in death by a brother, Bud Lowder of Kannapolis and two sisters, Edna Hayes of Kannapolis and Carole Edwards of Lexington. She leaves to cherish her memories a very loving husband of 31 years, William Wayne Seal of the home; two daughters and family, Judy Peacock Templeton and Terry of Lexington and Robbie Peacock Walker and Jimmy of Westfield; three sisters, Alice Lowder and Hazel Ewing of Kannapolis and Naomi Barnette of Hiddenite. She also left a gentle touch on three grandchildren, Shannon, Scottie and Terri and a great-grandchild, Zayne. Jean was also blessed to have five stepchildren, Sharon and Sam Melton, Michael and Kim Seal, Jenny and Boyd Southern, all of Atlanta, Jack and Barbara Seal of Alabama and Johnny and Crystal McKnight of King; nine stepgrandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren. Jean also had a host of nieces and nephews, with one very special niece, Anita Adams of Kannapolis. There is also a very special friend that not only Jean but the whole family will always cherish and never forget, Beckie and Thomas Drass and children, Adam and fiancée Chrisy and their son Michael; also a daughter Crystal Crites of Ohio. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Stoney Ridge Baptist Church, where Jean was a member, with Pastors Yates Wilkinson and Johnny Enloe officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends and family from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Although Jean is no longer with us here on earth, we know from the many lives and hearts she touched that she will always be loved and never forgotten.

TUCKER

PINNACLE - Mrs. Lillian Inman Tucker, 87, of Route 1 passed away Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001, at Brim's Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Robbie Stevens and the Rev. Milton Sewell officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. "Mama Tucker" as she was known to most, who knew her, was a native of Surry County, the daughter of the late John Ira Inman and Micky Brinkley Inman. She was preceded in death by seven sisters and two brothers. Mrs. Tucker is survived by her husband of 58 years, the Rev. Howard Tucker; a daughter and son-in-law, Polly and Joe Bennett of Pinnacle; a son and daughter-in-law, James Howard and Karen Tucker Jr. of Pinnacle; three grandchildren, Jay Bennett, Jill Rudisill and Karla Trask; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. The Tucker Family will receive friends at Brim's Grove Baptist Church Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001, from 6 to 8 p.m. and other times at the home of her daughter, 2119 Oscar Frye Road, Pinnacle. Memorial donations may be made to the Brim's Grove Baptist Church cemetery Fund, C/O Homer Hicks, 1502 Brims Grove Rd., Pinnacle, NC 27043. The Tucker Family is being served by Cox-Needham Funeral Home, Pilot Mountain.

WHITE

GREENVILLE - Mr. Don Franklin White Sr., 76, died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001. His residence was 101 Deerwood Drive. The memorial service will be conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel. Interment services will be held today at 12 noon at Petteway Family cemetery in Jacksonville. Mr. White, son of the late Don Grady and Deborah Hoell White of Craven County, grew up in Vanceboro and graduated from Farm Life High School. He attended East Carolina University. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in both the European and Pacific theaters. A resident of Greenville since 1963, he was co-founder of Grady-White Boat Co., which he started in 1958. He also was president of Allen-White Inc. until 1984 and from 1985 until his death, was president of D.F. White Co. Mr. White was also a farmer. He was a charter member of the Vanceboro Rotary Club, a member of the Sudan Temple in New Bern, a 33rd degree Mason, and was a plank member of the East Carolina Pirate Club. An avid golfer, he was a member of Greenville Country Club, Brook Valley Country Club and Country Club of North Carolina. Mr. White is survived by his wife of 49 years, Enid Petteway White; daughters Lynn White Hadwin and her husband, Gary of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Donna White Willis of Cary; son Don Franklin White Jr. and his wife, Kelly, of Winston-Salem; and grandchildren, Gary Hadwin Jr., Jennifer Hadwin, Jordan Hadwin, Chase Hadwin, Larkin Willis, Reynolds Willis, Bailey White and Mary Slade White. The family will receive friends at Wilkerson Funeral Home on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Brody School of Medicine, Medical Foundation, 525 Moye Blvd., Greenville, NC 27858; the American Heart Association, 3015 S. Memorial Drive, Suite A, Greenville, NC 27834; or the American Cancer Society, 1O21-B Red Banks Road, Greenville, NC 27858.
