Mr. Thomas Leroy Imes of 1306 E. Clemmonsville Road in Winston-Salem went home to join the Lord Feb. 11, 2001, after suffering a brief illness at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Imes, known as Leroy to his family and friends, was born Aug. 8, 1941, to Mrs. Dorothy Imes Conrad and the late Robert Harrison. He spent the majority of his life living in Clemmons, where he enjoyed life with his mother, Mrs. Dorothy I. Conrad and stepfather, Mr. Walter Lee Conrad. He attended Hickory Grove AME Zion Church in Clemmons. Mr. Imes’ only sibling, Mr. Norman Wesley Imes Sr., preceded him in death. He leaves behind to cherish his memories his mother and stepfather; several nieces, Mrs. Elanda Starnes (Darryl) of Richmond, Va. and Mrs. Elizabeth Imes of Winston-Salem; nephews Mr. Michael Imes (Darr), Mr. Matthew Imes (Crystal) and Mr. Kelvin Imes of Winston-Salem; four aunts; four uncles; a host of cousins and many friends; and two sisters-in-law, Sandra Volter and Mrs. Ruth Imes of Winston-Salem. Homegoing services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday afternoon in the chapel of Clark S. Brown & Sons Funeral Home, with the Rev. Robert Bailey officiating. Visitation with family will begin at 1:30. Interment will follow in Hickory Grove AME Zion Church cemetery in Clemmons. Clark S. Brown & Sons Funeral Home is in charge of services and arrangements.

JORDAN

TOBACCOVILLE — Mrs. Helen George Jordan, 76, of 4190 Reid Road died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001. She was born Dec. 12, 1924, in Forsyth County to John W. and Dovie L. George. She was married to Robert Gray Jordan on May 24, 1941. Mr. Jordan preceded her in death in 1985. Also preceding her was a grandson, Larry Todd Cook in January 2000. Mrs. Jordan worked for Hanes Hosiery and helped raise tobacco for many years. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Surviving are two sons, Richard Gray Jordan of Tobaccoville and Randal Walter Jordan of Germanton and three daughters, Linda Bentley of Clemmons, JoAnn Cook of Germanton and Kathy Jordan of Tobaccoville. She had nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter. Also surviving are her brother, Carlos George and two sisters, Mrs. Thelma Wall and Mrs. Ruby Johnson, all of Thomasville. The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 16, 2001, at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Dwayne Johnson and the Rev. Charles C. Vogler. Burial will be in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

LINVILLE

KERNERSVILLE — Mr. Horace “Buck” Crews Linville, 74, died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, at Wake Forest University-Baptist Med­ical Center. Mr. Linville was born March 3, 1926, in Forsyth County, a son of the late Ernest Paul and Floy Phipps Linville. He was retired from RJR Archer. He served in both World War II and the Korean conflict as a chief petty officer of the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Manard. He was involved 19 years with the Boy Scouts troop at Sedge Garden United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother Jimmie Phipps Linville. Sur­viving are his wife, Virginia Sapp Linville of the home; two daughters, Cindy and husband Robert Poindexter of Kerners­ville and Susan Pickett of Albuquerque, N.M.; five sisters, Jenny and husband Gilbert Ferguson of Kernersville, Sylvia and husband Billy Stockton of Kernersville, Joan and husband Lloyd Pardue of Yadkinville, Shelby and husband Kenneth Payne of Concord and Judy Loggins of Kernersville; two brothers, John Paul and wife Joyce Linville and Richard Gray and wife Kay Linville of Kernersville; four grandchildren, M. Todd and wife Kim Poindexter, Rodney W. and wife Monica Poindexter, Ryan E. Pickett and Carrie L. Pickett; and four great-grandchildren, Alexis Poindexter, Madison Poindexter, Cassidy Poindexter and Grayson Poindexter. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, at Sedge Garden United Methodist Church by the Rev. Ed Biggers. The family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Hayworth-Miller-Cain Funeral Home and briefly after the service at the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Hospice of Winston-Salem/Forsyth Co­unty, 1100-C S. RIDDLE

ADVANCE — Mrs. Sarah Marie Owens Riddle, 80 years of age, a very loving and caring mother, of N.C. Highway 801 N. died Tuesday afternoon at her home. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Eaton Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Don Sigmon and Mr. David Owens officiating. Burial will be in the Yadkin Valley Baptist Church cemetery. The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 9 Thursday night. Mrs. Riddle was born in Surry County on June 6, 1920, to the late Garfield and Cora Brown Owens and was retired with more than 30 years of service with Hanes Corporation. She was a longtime member of Yadkin Valley Baptist Church and enjoyed sewing and canning. Her favorite pastime was to visit yard sales and touring flea markets. She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. John L. Riddle, on July 25, 1963. Surviving are her son, John R. Riddle of the home; a half sister, Jane Smith; a half brother, David Owens, both of Mocksville; and her longtime companion, Travis York of Advance.

ROE

NORTH WILKESBORO — Mrs. Ila Jane “Janie” Harris Roe, 90, of Village of Wilkes Skilled Care, the widow of Frank Roe, died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, at Village of Wilkes Skilled Care. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, at Fairplanes Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jim Rhoades and the Rev. Charles Robinson officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30. Burial will be in Mountlawn Memorial Park. Mrs. Roe was born July 21, 1910, in Wilkes County to Marshall and Mamie Lyon Harris. She was a member of Fairplanes Baptist Church. She is survived by a daughter, Margaret Roe Brown of Kernersville; three sons, Bob Roe of North Wilkesboro, Jim Roe and Tom Roe of Daytona Beach, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. The family will be at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home from 7 to 9 Friday night from 7 to 9.

ROGALSKI

KERNERSVILLE — Mrs. Irene Clara Rogalski, 84, died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, at her home. Mrs. Rogalski was born Dec. 4, 1916, in Cleveland, Ohio a daughter of the late John and Lottie Klauszinski. She was a member of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Winston-Salem. Surviving are her husband of 55 years, Theodore Rogalski of the home; three daughters, Barbara Mendat of the home, Marcia Finn of Akron, Ohio and Arlene Rumes of Lodi, Ohio; nine grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church.

SPENCER

Mr. William Oliver Spencer III, 74, of 701 Glen Echo Trail passed away at Forsyth Medical Center on Feb. 13, 2001, after a brief illness. He was born in Winston-Salem on April 8, 1926, the son of the late William Oliver Spencer Jr. and Fay Huntley Spencer Ives. He attended local public schools but graduated from High Point High School after his family moved to High Point. He completed one year at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, then entered the U.S. Army in May 1944 and served in the military operations in the Southwest Pacific area and Japan. He joined General Douglas MacArthur’s headquarters in Manila and was in the advanced echelon that landed in Japan 10 days before the surrender. He witnessed the signing of the Japanese surrender in Tokyo Bay from a ship anchored beside the USS Missouri. MacArthur gave Mr. Spencer a field commission of second lieutenant and personally pined on his Silver Bars. He was awarded the Bronze Star for his outstanding service with the advanced echelon in the adjutant general’s office in Japan. He was honorably discharged in Nov. 1946. Mr. Spencer returned to Winston-Salem and worked with his uncle, John Kerr Spencer Sr. at the Winston Steam Laundry. After 19 years, he opened his own business, a franchise of Calico Corners, selling decorative fabric. Three months after a fire in January 1987 the business reopened as Fingertips. Mr. Spencer retired in September 1988. He is survived by his wife of 47˝ years, Mrs. Nell Penn Watt Spencer of the home; two children and their spouses, William Oliver Spencer IV (Laura Spencer Lee) of Charlotte and Sallie Rice (Thomas B. III) of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren he loved very much, William Spencer V, Mary Carter Lee Spencer, Catherine Penn Rice and Virginia Neil Rice; a sister, Mary Jo Spencer Gibson (Raleigh J. III) of Walnut Cove; a half brother, David Gray Spencer of Richmond, Va.; his stepmother, Caroline Gray Spencer of Winston-Salem; and beloved nieces and nephews. Mr. Spencer’s life hobbies were family, gardening and classical music. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 15, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the B.F. Huntley Trust, Winston-Salem Foundation, 850 N. Fifth St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101 or St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 520 Summit St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101. Visitation with the family was held at the home last evening. STONE

HILLSVILLE, Va. — Clifton Paul Stone, 79, passed away at his home on Feb. 14, 2001, surrounded by his loving family and friends. He was born Nov. 6, 1921, in Carroll County, Va., to Hobert and Gertrude Stone. He was married to Nadine Robinson Stone on April 27, 1942. He proudly served his country in the Pacific campaign of World War II earning three Bronze Service Stars and a Purple Heart. He owned and operated C.P. Stone Grocery until his retirement in 1987 and remained active in the management of the family business after passing it to his daughter and son-in-law. He was an active member of Pine Grove Primitive Baptist Church for 58 years and served as a deacon for more than 25 years. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Hobert and Gertrude Stone and a son-in-law, Don Gray Dalton. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Nadine Robinson Stone of the home; two daughters and a son-in-law, Anglia Stone Dalton and Chris Dalton of Hillsville and Patricia Stone Dalton of Hillsville; a special grandson, Bradley Gray Dalton of Hillsville and his fiancee, Shannon Hughes of Galax, Va.; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Evelyn and Hubert Rose of Evans, Ga., Virginia and Jack King of Max Meadows, Va., Myrtle and Virgil Peverall of Salem, Va., and Bertha and Troy Marshall of Austinville, Va.; and three brothers and sisters-in-law, Thomas and Reba Stone of Fort Chiswell, Va., Herbert Stone of Hillsville and Ronald and Goldie Stone of Austinville. He is also survived by loving caretakers, Danny and Sheila Jones of Galax and a host of other relatives and friends. Viewing will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001, at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel in Hillsville. Mr. Stone will lie in state at Pine Grove Primitive Baptist Church, Hillsville one hour before the funeral services at 2 p.m., Friday, Feb. 16, 2001, with Elder Joe H. McGrady and Elder Ronald Bowman officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military rites conducted by Hillsville VFW Post 1115.

VERA

Jose Luis Vera of 1108 Marne St. passed away Feb. 11, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2001, at Our Lady of Mercy. Burial will be noon today, Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001, at Evergreen cemetery. The funeral cortege will assemble and leave from 268 Harrington Circle en route to the cemetery. Arrange­ments entrusted to Gilmore Funeral Home.

VERNON

MADISON — Forrest Jackson “Buster” Vernon, 90, of 201 S. Dahl St. died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, at his home. His funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 16, 2001, at the Ray Funeral Home Chapel in Madison. Burial will be in the Trent Family cemetery in Stoneville. Mr. Vernon was a native of Rockingham County and lived in Mount Airy from 1933 to 1955, when he moved back to Madison. He retired from Burlington Industries and was of the Moravian faith. He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin Lee and Mattie Elliott Vernon. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Isabel Atkins Vernon of the home; sons James Forrest Vernon and wife Pat of Ozark, Ala., and Tony Lee Vernon and wife Jane of Kernersville; daughter Frankie V. Bowlin and husband Aubrey of Stoneville; 10 grandchildren, Timmy and Sheila Vernon, Christy and Greg Smith, Michael and Candy Bowlin, Jeff Vernon and family, Cheryl Krenowicz and family, Mike Vernon and family, Toni Vernon, Kathy Vernon, Connie Vernon and Jimmy Vernon; two great-grandchildren, Brock and Blake Bowlin; and a special friend, Pat Simmons. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001, at Ray Funeral Home and all other times at his residence.

VESTAL

JONESVILLE — Mr. Worth Raymond Vestal, 86, of Swan Creek Road passed away at 1:22 a.m. Wednesday Feb. 14, 2001, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin. He was born Dec. 8, 1914, in Yadkin County to the late Harrison and Charity Pinnix Vestal. Mr. Vestal was retired from Chatham Manufacturing after 43 years, was a member of Swan Creek Baptist Church and was a veteran of World War II serving in the US Army Medical Corps. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Harvey Vestal, Coy Vestal, Vertle Vestal, and Bob Vestal. Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Louise Tulbert Vestal, of the home; two children, Larry (Susan) Vestal of Williamston, and Linda (Winston) Lear of Morganton; a sister, Pansy (James) Nations of Jonesville; three brothers, Alton Vestal and Fred Vestal both of Jonesville and Elmer Vestal of Hamptonville; two granddaughters, Sarah (Franklin) Frye and Melissa Vestal; and a great-granddaughter, Emma Frye. His funeral Service will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Swan Creek Baptist Church, by the Rev. Nat Thompson. He will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Gentry Family Funeral Service on Little Mountain Road in Jonesville. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the donor’s choice.

WATSON

MOCKSVILLE — Ms. Kate Elizabeth Watson, 75, of 116 Hollow Hill Court passed away Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001, at the Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center. She was a native of Darlington, S.C., born Feb. 12, 1925, lived in New York City for most of the adult life and had lived in this area since 1985. She was of the Baptist faith and was a retired department store clerk in New York, N.Y. She is survived by a son, Kenneth Watson; four sisters, Naomi Lyde of Fairfax, Va., Bessie Harris and Mary Henderson of Las Vegas, Nev., and Iva Owings of Los Angeles, Calif.; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. A service in her memory will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 16, 2001, in the chapel of the Russell Funeral Home, with the Rev. L.S. Werts presiding. The family visitation will be from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

HAMPTON, Va. - Anita Moorefield Brown passed into a new life Feb. 11, 2001. Born Oct. 4, 1918, in Stokes County, Lawsonville. Anita lived most of her life in Richmond, Hampton, and Patrick Springs, Va. Anita was a tender, compassionate woman and a loving wife, mother and homemaker. She loved her family and grandchildren unconditionally. She taught nursery-aged children for many years in Sunday school at Hampton Roads Baptist Church and worked with Vacation Bible School at Critz Baptist Church several years. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Marshall Brown; her mother, Mary Ann Frances Wall Moorefield; and her father, John Franklin Moorefield. Survivors include three sons, Francis M. Brown and his wife Jane of Byron, Ga., R. Wayne Brown and his wife Barbara of Hampton and William M. Brown Jr. of Newport News, Va.; a daughter, Yvonne B. Powell and her husband Walter of Hampton; five grandchildren, Anita Powell-Byrd and her husband Rick of Glen Rock, N.J., Colin Brown of Newport News, Brian W. Brown of Arlington, Va., Andrew N. Powell of Hampton and Amy E. Brown of Newport News; and a great-grandchild, Katherine Moorefield Byrd of Glen Rock, N.J. Also surviving is a brother, Joseph C. Moorefield and his wife Wanda of Springtown, Texas. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 Thursday at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 16, 2001, at Critz Baptist Church, Critz, Va. by Pastor Billy Dixon. CHERRY

Mr. George McLean Cherry, 50, of 4613 Erin St. passed away Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was a native and lifelong resident of Winston-Salem born Sept. 19, 1950, the son of the late John Thomas and Elaine Fulp Cherry. He was a graduate of Carver High School class of 1969 and was a member of the Eternal Holiness Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in the Vietname War and was a retired employee of the city of Winston-Salem. He is survived by his wife, Mary Cherry of the home; two sons, George Cherry Jr. (Tiffany) and Rodney Jacobs (Dianette) both of Winston-Salem; three daughters, Shannon Robinson, Kenya Cherry (Kerrmitt Williams) and Monica Thompson (Bryant) all of Winston-Salem; three brothers, Thomas Cherry (Janice) of Winston-Salem, Darryl Cherry (Tammy) of Walkertown and Ronnie Cherry (Angelita) of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Shirley Leak and Cora Lyerly of Winston-Salem; a dear and devoted friend, Cynthia O'Neal of Winston-Salem; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001, in the chapel of the Russell Funeral Home, with Pastor Esie McCullough officiating. Interment will be in the Salisbury National cemetery. WALKERTOWN - Mr. William Edward Dancy, 50, of 6302 Sullivantown Road, died Monday, Feb. 12, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Aug. 14, 1950, in Portsmouth, Va., a son of James E. and Margaret Jackson Dancy. He retired from Lucent Technology, due to a disability, with 14 years of service. He was a graduate of Forsyth Technical College and John Hancock College. Mr. Dancy was preceded in death by his brother Allan Dancy. Surviving are his wife, Margie Murphy Dancy of the home; his parents of Kernersville; a brother, James M. Dancy; three stepchildren; seven grandchildren; and two nephews. A memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 16, 2001, at Gardens of Memory Chapel, Walkertown. The family receive friends immediately after the service. Hayworth-Miller-Cain Funeral Service is assisting the Dancy family.

DODSON

MADISON - Mr. Albert Dewey Dodson, 89, passed away Monday evening, Feb. 12, 2001, at Morehead Memorial Hospital in Eden. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001, at Delta United Methodist Church in Sandy Ridge. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Baptist Church cemetery in Madison. Mr. Dodson was born April 19, 1911, in Sandy Ridge to John William Albert and Nancy Elizabeth Webb Dodson. He farmed for many years in Stokes County after serving in the Civilian conservation Corps in Brevard. He was a member of Delta United Methodist Church but attended both Delta and Mount Hermon United Methodist Churches. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife of 21 years, Mildred Emma Joyce Dodson; three sisters, Annie Laura Dodson, Ester Lee Dodson Palmer and Nana Belle Dodson Hawkins; and five brothers, William Walter Dodson, James Elmer Dodson, Everette Cecil Dodson, Lindsay Woodrow Dodson and Cameron Morrison Dodson. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Pauline Joyce Martin Dodson; son Keith Douglas Dodson of Hilton Head Island, S.C.; stepson James Lee Martin of St. Croix, Virgin Island; two grandchildren, Melinda Dodson Newton of Atlanta, Ga., and Stuart Andrew Dodson of Brevard; two stepgrandchildren, Elizabeth Martin Herring of St. Croix and James Spencer Martin of Scottsdale, Ariz.; a great-granddaughter, Kathryn Joyce Newton of Atlanta; and brothers and sisters John Henry Clay Dodson of Pine Hall, Noel Clifton Dodson of Walkertown, Joel Webb Dodson of Fayetteville and Acie Ruth Dodson Spencer of Lawsonville. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2001, at Ray Funeral Home in Madison and all other times at his residence. DONNELLY

PFAFFTOWN - John A. "Jack" Donnelly died Feb. 8 after a long illness. Mr. Donnelly was the retired city/county planning director of Winston-Salem; a city and community that he loved. He is survived by his wife, Donna Marie; two sons and daughters-in-law, John Donnelly (Suzy) of Winston-Salem and Paul Donnelly (Carrie) of Raleigh; and a loving sister, Catherine Hogg of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Mass will be celebrated at Good Shepherd Church in King by the Rev. Larry Hunt at noon Saturday, Feb. 17. Visitation will be after Mass at the church. Donations may be made to the Diabetes. Foundation or Hospice of Winston-Salem in lieu of flowers. Jack was loved by all and will by dearly missed. Arrange-ments by Memorial Funeral Chapel.
