Clifton O'Brien Edwards Sr., 73, of 5683 Gumtree Road, Winston-Salem, formerly of Mount Gilead, died 10:17 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, Winston-Salem. He was born Dec. 1, 1927, in Washington, N.C., to Otis Erwin and Laura Mandy Harrison Edwards and was a retired accountant with J.B. Watson Accounting Firm of Wadesboro. He was a member of Mount Gilead First Baptist Church and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, deacon and former chairman of the Board of Deacons, member of Blackmer Lodge #127, Order of the Eastern Star and Mount Gilead #124 and was a Worthy Patron, and District Deputy Grand Patron. Survivors are his wife Ann Blake Edwards of the home; one son, Clifton O. Edwards Jr. of Mocksville; two daughters, Laura Edwards Morton of Raleigh and Barbara Edwards Ruark of Winston-Salem; three brothers, James E. Edwards of Gainesville, Fla., the Rev. Kennyon Edwards of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Ray Edwards of Mount Gilead; one sister, Christine Edwards Sime of Orlando, Fla.; and six grandchildren. The family will receive friends 6:30-8:30 p.m. Monday at Edwards Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to New Mt. FLINCHUM

ARARAT - Mrs. Rosie Ida Tilley Johnson Flinchum, 79, of 667 Creed Road, Ararat, widow of John Coleman Flinchum, passed away Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001, at her home. Mrs. Flinchum was born in Stokes County on June 13, 1921, daughter of the late Melvin and Elma Inman Tilley. She was a member of Little Mountain Baptist Church, a homemaker, and retired from Renfro Corp. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Charles Davis of Dobson; two sons and daughters-in-law, the Rev. Steve and Donna Johnson and Jerry and Debby Johnson, all of Ararat; three stepdaughters and sons-in-law, Carol and Ronald Carson of Ararat, Brenda and Jerry Coe of Mount Airy and Patty and Jeff Draughon of Ararat; eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, seven stepgrandchildren and seven stepgreat-grandchildren; one sister, Etheleen Bowman of Ararat; one brother, Graham Tilley of Mount Airy; and one half sister, Lennis Johnson of Westfield. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Flinchum was preceded in death by her first husband, Wesley Johnson, and a son, J.E. Johnson. The funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, at Little Mountain Baptist Church. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Bill Watson and the Rev. Fed Chilton with burial in the Mount Zion Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Monday at Moody Funeral Home of Mount Airy where her body will remain until carried to the church to lie in state 30 minutes before the funeral service. FLYNT

Mrs. Evelyn Tucker Flynt of Winston-Salem was born Aug. 11, 1921 to the Rev. Cicero and Hattie Tucker. She died Feb. 3, 2001 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was preceded in death by a brother, Marvin Tucker; a sister, Daisy Styers; and by her husband, Max Flynt, in 1999. Surviving are her son, Rex Flynt, and his wife, Joeleen, of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Vicki Kornegay, and her husband, Dr. A.D. Kornegay, of Winston-Salem; three granddaughters, Abbi Flynt, Margaret Kornegay and Susan Kornegay, and a brother, Ernest Tucker of Winston-Salem. The family will receive friends at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel on Sunday night from 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Bethany Baptist Church by the Rev. Don Harvey. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family requests that memorials be made to Bethany Baptist Church Building Fund, 600 Old Hollow Road, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27105.

GLENN

Robert Brown Glenn of Heritage Woods Retirement Community died Feb. 3, 2001, at Baptist Hospital. He was born Oct. 9, 1917, in New Bern, the son of Bessie Brown and John Andrew Glenn and was a lifelong resident of Winston-Salem. In 1946 he married Nancy Urquhart Glenn, who died in 1994. In World War II he served in the Army Air Corps in the European Theater. In 1985 he retired as president and chairman of the board of Piedmont Leaf Tobacco Co. after 38 years of service. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Winston-Salem. He is survived by two daughters, Linda Glenn Bettis and husband H. Lee Bettis Jr. of Winston-Salem and Nancy Susan Glenn of Walnut Cove; one son, Robert Brown Glenn Jr. and his wife Connie Winstead of Durham; four grandchildren, Katherine Glenn McConnell and husband John Daniel McConnell II of Raleigh, Lindsay Paige Truluck of Charlotte and Matthew Winstead Glenn and David Winstead Glenn, both of Durham; three sisters, Carol Glenn Winder and Eleanor Glenn Kennelly of Winston-Salem and Betsy Glenn Cates of Clanton, Ala.; and two brothers, John Andrew Glenn of Winston-Salem and William Brown Glenn of Greenville. His brother Henry Preston Glenn of Winston-Salem preceded him in death. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, at Vogler's Chapel, 2951 Reynolda Road. That afternoon following the graveside service the family will receive friends at the home of his daughter Linda Bettis. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the J. Paul Sticht Center on Aging and Rehabilitation or to a charity of the donor's choice.

HAYDEN

MOUNT AIRY - Mr. Alvis Graham Hayden, 83, of 191 Blue Meadow Lane, Mount Airy, husband of Ersell Jessup Hayden, passed away Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mr. Hayden was born in Surry County on April 11, 1917, the son of the late Robert Ed and Maggie Hooker Hayden. He was a retired farmer and a member of Mountain View Pentecostal Holiness Church. Survivors include his wife Ersell Jessup Hayden of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Geraldine and Leon Hooker of Mount Airy and Wanda and Bruce Branch of Dobson; one son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Carolyn Hayden of Mount Airy; six grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Lola White of Mount Airy and Inez and Wayne Jessup of Mount Airy; and a brother and sister-in-law, Lloyd and Iris Hayden of Mount Airy. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hayden was preceded in death by daughter, Scarlett Faye Adkins. The funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, at Mountain View Pentecostal Holiness Church. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Tommy Smith and the Rev. Harold Cox with burial in the Mountain View Pentecostal Holiness Church cemetery. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Monday at Moody Funeral Home where his body will remain until carried to the church to lie in state 30 minutes before the funeral service.

JOHNSON

EAST BEND - Mr. William Hiram Johnson, 75, of Old Mill Road, passed away Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born in Yadkin County on Oct. 25, 1926, to H.E. and Creola Beane Johnson. Mr. Johnson was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was a deacon and member of Pleasant Grove Primitive Baptist Church for over 30 years. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a signalman. Mr. Johnson was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. as an electrical engineering designer after 34 years. He was clerk of Little Yadkin Association. Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by his parents, son Kenny Johnson, brother Frank N. Johnson and two sisters, Edna Jester and Mary Lee Creech. Surviving are his wife Mary Bridges Johnson of the home; two daughters, Helen (Wayne) Edwards and Cynthia (Buddy) Glasscoe, both of East Bend; one sister, Ruth (John) Choplin of Yadkinville; six grandchildren, Chris Reavis of Yadkinville, Dustin Glasscoe of Colorado, Daniel Edwards, Jamie Edwards, Victoria Edwards and Wade Brown, all of East Bend; and two great-grandchildren, Jason Brown of East Bend and Tyler Reavis of Yadkinville. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001, at the Huff Funeral Home Chapel in East Bend by Elder Vance Jones, Elder Scotty Marshall, Elder Rodney Marshall and Elder David Edwards. Burial will follow in the Allen-Johnson Family cemetery. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Monday at Huff Funeral Home in East Bend.

KNOTTS

Allan S. Knotts, 52, of Kernersville died Feb.1, 2001. For many years he was active in the Kernersville Soccer Association. Survivors include his wife Jill Merriam-Knotts; one daughter, Gillian Knotts of Boston, Mass.; two sons, Justin Knotts and Trevor Knotts, both of Kernersville; his father Cheston Knotts of Columbus, N.C.; and two brothers, David Knotts of Burlington and Richard Knotts of Hickory. A memorial service will be held 7 p.m. Tuesday at Fountain of Life Lutheran Church, Hopkins Road, Kernersville. Memorials may be made to the Kernersville Soccer Association, 209 Century Blvd., Kernersville, NC 27284.

MOOREFIELD

WESTFIELD - Mrs. Martha Collins Moorefield, 97, of Westfield, widow of William Robert Moorefield, passed away Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001, at her home. Mrs. Moorefield was born April 23, 1903, in Stokes County to the late Andrew Jack and Elizabeth Jane Snoddy Collins. She was a homemaker and a member of Brown Mountain Baptist Church. Survivors are three daughters and sons-in-law, Helen Durham of the home, Martha Juanita Mickey and husband Roy Lee of Westfield and Shirley Shelton and husband Robert of Westfield; one son and daughter-in-law, Robert Moorefield and wife Peggy of Pilot Mountain; 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 5, at Cox-Needham Funeral Home Chapel with visitation following the service. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, at Brown Mountain Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Fred Chilton and the Rev. Daryl Price. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice. The Moorefield family is being served by Cox-Needham Funeral Home, Pilot Mountain.

MURPHY

Mrs. Myrtle Hutchens Murphy, 80, of Winston-Salem died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born Sept. 1, 1920, in Yadkin County to Nick Monroe and Turnie Blanche Hutchens. She was a member of Pilot View Friends Church in Yadkin County and Faithful Followers Sunday School Class at Woodland Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her loving husband Paul C. Murphy on Jan. 8, 1993. Mrs. Murphy is survived by daughter Ruby M. Dorsett of Clemmons, grandson Timothy Paul Dorsett of Clemmons, great-granddaughter Kimberleigh Hope Dorsett of Housatonie, Mass., brothers Blain Hutchens of Winston-Salem and Paul Hutchens of Yadkinville, and sisters Frances H. Allred of Yadkinville, Harriet H. Lackey of Yadkinville and Hazel H. Doub of Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, at Hayworth-Miller Chapel by the Rev. Zeno Groce and Pastor Robert Hutchens. Burial will be in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Monday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Flowers will be appreciated or memorials may be made to Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

SNEED

Mr. Gary Michael Sneed, 49, died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001. He was born April 25, 1951, in Winston-Salem to Robert Morris Sneed Sr. and Annie Goodman Sneed. Mr. Sneed was employed by Siemens-Westinghouse in Rural Hall and attended Pfafftown Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his father and his brother, Robert M. Sneed Jr. Surviving are his mother, his wife Jan Worrell Sneed, his beloved sons Gary Lee Sneed and Jeffrey Michael Sneed, a special "daughter" Casandra Butler and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Woodland cemetery, conducted by Dr. Craig Bowman and Rev. Timothy Wolf. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Monday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel. Memorials may be made to Pfafftown Baptist Church, P.O. Box 27, Pfafftown, NC 27040.

WHITAKER

HAMPTONVILLE - Mrs. Judy King Whitaker, 58, of Harold's Lane passed away Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin. She was born Jan. 27, 1943, in Yadkin County to the late Raymond and Grace Blevins King. Mrs. Whitaker was a retired cook at Welborn's Snack Bar and was a member of Mountain Grove United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband Harold Whitaker on June 5, 1998, and by her brother Richard Charles King. Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law Donna Ann (Wayne) Quesenberry of Hamptonville; three grandchildren, Charity Aguliar, Stephen Beamer and Charlene Beamer; and her brother Dexter Rowan King. Her funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Mountain Grove United Methodist Church by the Rev. Kathy Earley. She will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Monday at Gentry Family Funeral Service on Little Mountain Road in Jonesville.

WOOD

Clyde (Wayne) Wood, 36, of Winston-Salem died over the weekend at N.C. Baptist Hospital after an extended illness. Surviving are his father Phillip Wood, his brother Donnie Wood, his grandmother Mamie Shelton, and one son, Carl Wayne. The family is being served by Vogler Funeral Home on Reynolda Road. Wayne will rest in peace at Parklawn Memorial Gardens in Winston-Salem. The family has asked not to have a service. In lieu of flowers memorials can be made at First Union Bank, 3288 Silas Creek Parkway, Winston-Salem, NC 27103, c/o the Clyde Wayne Wood Assistance Fund.

YATES

SALISBURY - Mrs. Madolyn McIntire Yates, 53, of Salisbury died 11:15 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, at her residence. She had been in declining health for one year. She was born Jan. 1, 1948, in Rutherford County, Tenn., daughter of the late Eleanor Foss McIntire and Mr. Robert E. McIntire and stepmother Elma McIntire, both of Stone Mountain, Ga. She was educated in the Rowan County Schools and attended UNC-Charlotte and the Dept. of Revenue School in Chapel Hill. She was a business and personal property tax assessor for Rowan County with 22 years of service. She was a member of the N.C. Assessors Association and the Central Piedmont Business-Personal Property Appraiser's Association of which she had served as president and was serving as secretary/treasurer at the time of her death. She is survived by her husband Allan Yates of the home whom she married Aug. 3, 1965. Two daughters, Tammy Yates Snow of Mooresville and Ginny Yates Alley of Salisbury and two grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, at Neel Road Baptist Church, Salisbury, conducted by the Rev. Jerry P. Wilkes, pastor. Burial will follow in Rowan Memorial Park, Salisbury. Visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 5, at Lyerly Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the residence. Memorials may be made to Rowan Regional Home Health and Hospice, 825-A West Innes St., Salisbury, NC 28144. Lyerly Funeral Home, 515 S. Main St., Salisbury, N.C., is serving the family of Mrs. Yates.

MOUNT AIRY - Mrs. Elva Mae Cassell York, 85, of Mount Airy, widow of Mr. Robert Edward York, passed away Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001, at her home. Mrs. York was born in Surry County on April 6, 1915, to the late Luther and Susie Slaydon Cassell. She was retired from Spencer's and was a member of Dover Baptist Church. Surviving is a brother, Everett Cassell of Mount Airy, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, at Dover Baptist Church and will be conducted by the Rev. J. Cecil Hill. Burial will follow in the White Plains Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Monday at Dover Baptist Church. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the Dover Baptist Church, 542 Dover Church Road, Mount Airy, N.C. Moody Funeral Home is serving the York family.

CAMPBELL

HARMONY - Mr. James Campbell, 78, of 622 Abbeydale Road, Harmony, died Friday at Brian Center of Statesville. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Born in Yadkin County on Oct. 13, 1922, he was a son of the late Lee Campbell and Mary Stokes Campbell. He was a retired textile worker and farmer. He enjoyed deer hunting, fishing and NASCAR racing. He was a member of Rock Spring Baptist Church. On April 2, 1946, he married the former Mary Swain, who survives. Also surviving are four sons, Michael Campbell and his wife Mary Ann of Harmony, Terry Campbell and his wife Mae of Hamptonville, Watsel Campbell and his wife Faye of Harmony and Ricky Campbell of Harmony; and three daughters, Mrs. Madeline Hedrick and her husband Harold of Harmony, Mrs. Kathy C. Johnson and her husband Gerald of Harmony and Mrs. Tammy Cook and her husband David of Mocksville. Also surviving are one brother, Avis Campbell of Mocksville and three sisters, Mrs. Mae Wood and Mrs. Esther Reavis of Harmony and Mrs. Alma West of Statesville. Fifteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren also survive. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Hoover, Dallas and Curtis Campbell and one sister, Mrs. Ila C. Neal. Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday at Rock Spring Baptist Church with the Rev. Steve Hedgecock, the Rev. Eddie Macemore and the Rev. David Kiser officiating. The body will lie in state at the church for 30 minutes prior to the funeral and burial will follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Casey Campbell, Steve Adams, Allen Adams, Derek Campbell, Shane Campbell, Rondal Campbell, Jimmy Jurney and Leo Reavis. The family will assemble at the residence of the deceased and will receive friends Sunday 6:30-9 p.m. at Reavis Funeral Home of Harmony. YADKINVILLE - Mrs. Sarah Jane "Sadie" Shore Dobbins, 96, of Yadkinville died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, at Hoots Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Dobbins was born March 12, 1904, in Yadkin County to Charlie and Mary Jane Hoots Shore. Sadie lived a wonderful, full life and impacted the lives of all who knew her. Being gifted in many areas, Sadie was an avid quilter, gardener, craft maker, antique collector and painter. She was Gold Star Mother, an award of an American flag with a gold star given to mothers who had lost a son in combat during World War I and World War II. Mrs. Dobbins was a homemaker and was a member of Deep Creek Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Henry P. Dobbins, son Robert Henry "Bobby" Dobbins and several brothers and sisters. Surviving are one son, James E. Dobbins and wife Jessie of Yadkinville; four grandchildren, James E. Dobbins Jr. and wife Sylvia of Hendersonville, Julia Joyce and husband Steve of Auburndale, Fla., Ennis Karns and husband Mike of Summerville, S.C., and Pascal Ray Dobbins and wife Lisa of Yadkinville; seven great-grandchildren, Justice Braind, James Michael Reavis Jr., Christy and William Crocker and David, Andy and Mahlon Dobbins; and two great-great-grandchildren, Keaton and Taylor Goforth. Funeral services will be 2:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 12, 2001, at Gentry Family Funeral Home by the Rev. Dallas Prestwood. Burial will follow in the Center United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 11, at Gentry Family Funeral Service, Hwy. 601 N., Yadkinville, N.C. Flowers will be accepted but memorials may be made to the Baptist Children's Home, P.O. Box 338, Thomasville, NC 27361, or to St. Jude's Hospital, 501 St. Jude's Place, Memphis, Tenn.

MOUNT AIRY - Mrs. Violet Jenkinson Eaton, 86, of 1365 E. Pine St., Mount Airy, the wife of Mr. Elbert Eaton, passed away at her home Friday, Feb. 9, 2001. Mrs. Eaton was born Dec. 12, 1914, in Chapeltown, Ecclesfield, England, daughter of the late Frank Jenkinson and Violet Caroline Rose Birks. Mrs. Eaton was a homemaker and a charter member of Welcome Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband Mr. Elbert Eaton of the home; three sons and daughters-in-law, Raymond and Mildred Eaton, David and Jane Eaton and John and Brenda Eaton, all of Mount Airy; five grandchildren, Ray Eaton of Rockhill, S.C., Dwayne Eaton, Joe Eaton, Johnny Eaton and Jamie Eaton, all of Mount Airy; five great-grandchildren, two step-great-grandchildren and a special friend of Nana, Brianna Sumner of Mount Airy. The funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 12, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, conducted by the Rev. Winfred Culler and the Rev. Mitch Caudill with burial to follow in Oakdale cemetery. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. Flowers will be accepted.
