CONWAY, S.C. - Betty Jane Spears Elvis, 68, of Green Leaf Drive died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, at Conway Hospital after an illness. Ms. Elvis was born April 18, 1932, in Myrtle Beach, a daughter of the late Fredrick Pearson and Clara Mae Helms Spears. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Myrtle Beach and Eastern Star. Survivors include three sons, Elbert A. Elvis Jr. of King, and Woody Elvis and Terry Elvis, both of Myrtle Beach; one daughter, Pat Walker of Conway; three brothers, William Allen Spears of Springfield, Mo., Robert Earl Spears of Rockingham and Donald Ray Sessions of Clarksville, Tenn.; one sister, Janice Kempster of Charlotte; six grandchildren, Scott Andrew Elvis, Charles Edward Brown, Spring Elvis Ferrell, Christopher R. Elvis, Heather R. Elvis and Morgan R. Elvis; and one great-grandson, Anthony Dakota Brown. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 12, at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel. Burial will follow in Oceanwoods cemetery. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. FREEMAN

JONESVILLE - Mr. Clarence Eli Freeman Jr., 54, of 105 East End Blvd., Jonesville, died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001, at Wake Forest Medical Center, Winston-Salem. Funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday at Arlington First Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 10:30 a.m. Mr. Freeman was born in Surry County on April 9, 1946, to Clarence and Verlie Luffman Freeman. He was a member of Arlington First Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his father, Clarence Eli Freeman Sr., in 1999. Surviving are two daughters, Lisa (Burton) Hawks of Lowgap and Victoria (J.C.) Galyean of Mount Airy; one son, Christopher Freeman of Elkin; his mother Mrs. Verlie Luffman Freeman of Jonesville; one sister, Cynthia Allred of Jonesville; two brothers James (Barbara) Freeman of Jonesville and Bradford Freeman of North Wilkesboro; two grandchildren, Bryan Hawks and Chance Galyean; two nieces, Laura Allred and Rebecca Marquis; one nephew, James Allred; and one great-niece, Cassie Marquis. The family suggests that memorials be made to the American Diabetes. Association. The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. at Kennedy Funeral Home in Elkin.

GOAD

MADISON - Mrs. Doris Brim Goad, 75, of 2376 K-Fork Road died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001, at Moses Cone Hospital. The funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 12, at Colonial Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Baptist Church cemetery. Mrs. Goad was born in Surry County. She was of the Baptist faith and was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her granddaughter Heather Burgess, parents Vester and Salley Brim, brother Walter Brim and sister Bertha Brim. Survivors include her husband of 56 years, the Rev. Clayton "Dickey" Goad of the home; sons Rickie Wilson Goad of Madison and Brian Goad and wife Kelly of Washington, D.C.; daughters Lorinda Burgess and husband Jerry of Pfafftown and Pamela SaintSing and husband Donnie of Greensboro; grandchildren Nikki and Adam Manuel, Kelli Richardson and Jordan Baylee Goad; great-grandchild Heather Richardson; and sister Ruth Cassady of Bassett, Va. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 11, at Colonial Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

HART

Lonnie Avalon Hart, son of the late George and Emma Spease Hart, was born June 1, 1926, in Lewisville. He moved to Winston-Salem at an early age and attended the public schools. He was employed by R.H. Barringer Co. for many years. Mr. Hart was preceded in death by his wife Lillian V. Hart and his son Donald Hart. He departed this life Wednesday morning, Feb. 7, at the WFU/Baptist Medical Center. Funeral services will be held 12 noon Tuesday, Feb. 13, from the chapel of Hooper Funeral Home with the Rev. Rhodford L. Anderson officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the funeral hour (11:30 a.m.-12 p.m.) at the funeral home. Mr. Hart is survived by one sister, Elsie H. Fruster of the city; two nieces, Evelyn P. Gullick of Winston-Salem and Pamela F. Stewart of Greensboro; one nephew, Kermit S. Payne Jr. of Phoenix, Ariz.; seven great-nieces, three great-nephews, eight great-great-nieces, two great-great-nephews, one great-great-great-nephew, other relatives and friends. (Hooper)

HINSHAW

BOONVILLE - Mr. Leak Hinshaw, 85, of N.C. Hwy 67, Boonville, died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born March 30, 1915, in Yadkin County to the late Henry L. and Lou Jester Hinshaw. He was retired owner of 67 Exxon Service Station in Boonville and a member of Union Grove Baptist Church. He was married to Leatha Huff Hinshaw, who preceded him in death Sept. 6, 1989. He was also preceded in death by five sisters and four brothers. Mr. Hinshaw is survived by one son, Tommy Hinshaw and wife Hazel of Boonville; grandsons Ricky and Issy Hinshaw and Randall and Michelle Hinshaw of Boonville; granddaughter Robin and David Johnson of Yadkinville; great-granddaughters Hope and Scott Webb, Bridget and W.A. Jenkins, Krissy Hinshaw and Briana Hinshaw of Yadkinville; and great-great-grandson Evan Scott Webb of Yadkinville. Funeral services for Mr. Hinshaw will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday at Reavis Funeral Home Yadkinville Chapel with Rev. Kenny Gooden officiating. Burial will follow in Union Grove Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Reavis Funeral Home Yadkinville Chapel. Pallbearers will be Bill Miller, Pete Hinshaw, Franklin Hinshaw, C.A. Jester, Wardell Jordan and Jackie Hinshaw. Honorary pallbearers will be Randall Hinshaw and Ricky Hinshaw. Reavis Funeral Home Yadkinville Chapel is serving the family. Memorials may be made to the church.

JACOBS

Mrs. Lessie Wall Kiger Jacobs, 86, died at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, following a period of declining health. A native of Pilot Mountain, she was born Nov. 10, 1914, to the late Porter and Pearl Boles Wall. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Edgar J. Kiger, in 1981 and by her second husband, Howard Jacobs. Mrs. Jacobs was a graduate of Appalachian State University. She was a member of the Kingswood United Methodist Church, and was retired from the Rural Hall Elementary School where she taught for many years. Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Steve and Vickey Kiger of Greensboro and Mickey and Jeannie Kiger of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren, Kelly, Brad, Jennifer, Jessica and Drew; two great-grandchildren, Kanon and Max; two step-daughters, Gladys Locke and Mary Marcoux; one sister, Mildred Kiger of Rural Hall and one brother, Martin Wall of Pilot Mountain. A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 12, at Kingswood United Methodist Church, officiated by the Rev. Glenn S. Griffiths and the Rev. R. Claxton Hall. Burial will follow in the Rural Hall Memorial Park. The family will receive relatives and friends 12:30-2 p.m. Monday at Kingswood UMC in Rural Hall. Memorials may be made to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103 or Kingswood UMC, 6840 University Parkway, Rural Hall, NC 27045.

LAFONE

Edna Garrison Lafone, 94, of 2980 Reynolda Road in Reynolda Park, formerly of Hickory, died Feb. 10, 2001, at North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem. She was born April 29, 1906, in Drexel, Burke County, to Charles and Fannie Garrison and was the wife of the late Vernon Lafone. She was a homemaker and an active member of First Church of God in Hickory, where she participated in the Gardening and Garden Club. Survivors are one son and daughter-in-law, Ben Lafone and Betty; one daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and A.C. Larrimore; five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild, all of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Ollie Griffin and Garland of Drexel and Cleo Sabastian and Tom of Santa Fe, N.M.; and one niece, Imo Gene May of Drexel. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday at First Church of God, Hickory, conducted by the Rev. Smith (Morganton). Visitation will be 1-2 p.m. prior to the services. Mrs. Lafone will be buried in Oakwood cemetery. Memorials may be made to First Church of God, 306 14th St., S.W., Hickory. Bass-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

LEVITT

Dr. Melvin N. Levitt, 75, of 724 Chester Road died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, at his home after a protracted illness. Dr. Levitt was born in Chicago, Ill., on March 13, 1925, to the late David and Kate Levitt. He received a Ph.D. in Psychology from Michigan State University. He joined the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania Institute of Neurological Sciences in 1962 and in 1970 became the Associate Professor of Physiology and Pharmacology at Bowman Gray School of Medicine. Dr. Levitt retired from teaching in 1990 but remained active in scientific research and writing in the study of chronic pain. He was a charter member of the Society of Neurosciences and the International Association for the Study of Pain. Dr. Levitt is survived by one daughter, Dr. Diana Levitt Baker and her husband Mark of Menlo Park, Calif., where she is completing her residency in diagnostic radiology at the University of California at San Francisco and by his former wife Dr. Janice Ovelmen-Levitt. He is also survived by a niece, Bonnie Adelman Chanan of Northbrook, Ill., and a nephew, Paul Adelman of Deerfield, Ill. Vogler & Sons Reynolda Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

MATTHEWS

HIGH POINT - Mr. James Halcomb (Shorty) Matthews, 73, resident of 1711 West Lexington Avenue, died Feb. 10, 2001, in the Evergreens Inc. Mr. Matthews was born in Jamestown on Oct. 31, 1927, a son of Lindsay H. and Annie Dunlap Matthews. He had been a resident of High Point for 43 years and was owner of Matthews Amusements. Mr. Matthews was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was of the Methodist faith. He was a member of the Piedmont Masonic Lodge #681, the Elks Club, the American Legion Post #206 and the High Point Moose Lodge. On July 3, 1959, he was married to the former Christine Harper of the home, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Rossie (Romona) Gardner of High Point and Susan (Christy) Matthews of the home; one son, James L. Matthews of Jamestown; one sister, Mrs. Kathleen Cheezem of Johnson City, Tenn.; one brother, Kenneth Matthews of Jamestown; and one grandchild, Lindsay Matthews. The memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Sechrest Chapel on East Lexington Avenue by the Rev. Johnny Albertson. Entombment in Guilford Memorial Park Mausoleum will be private. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be directed to the Epilepsy Foundation of the Piedmont, Medicine Fund, c/o Pat Gibson, Wake Forest School of Medicine, Medical Center Blvd., Winston-Salem, NC 27157-1078.

McCLAIN

Mrs. Lessie L. McClain, of 927 E. 17th St. passed away Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, at the Brian Center. She was a native of Chatham County; however, she had resided in this city since 1948. Mrs. McClain was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church where she was a deaconess and member of the Senior Choir and Women Progressive Club. She was a member of the 17th Street Goodwill Community Club. She is survived by one sister, Ruth Headen of Goldston; two brothers, J.C. Lineberry of Siler City and Van Lineberry of Baltimore, Md.; eight nieces, Mary Lee Graves of Hartford, Conn., Jeanette Foulks of Greensboro, Phyllis Burnette of Rochester, N.Y., Linda Graves and Patricia McSwain of Siler City, Vanessa Adams of Sulfolk, Va., Alfreda Price of Goldston and a devoted Vanessa Paige of this city; five nephews, Russell Lineberry of Chester, Pa., Kenneth Headen of Greensboro and Alvin, J.C. and Gregg Lineberry; a devoted friend, Susan Reynolds of this city; and several other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted 1 p. m. Monday, Feb. 12, at Bethlehem Baptist Church where Rev. I.L. Anthony will officiate and interment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Garden. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service, 12:30-1 p.m., at the church. The remains may be viewed today 2:30-7 p.m. and Monday 10-11:30 a.m. at Clarke S. Brown and Sons Funeral Home, 727 Patterson Ave. The family may be contacted at the residence. Arrangements entrusted to Douthit Funeral Services (896-0061).

MCNATT

Mr. Charles Daniel McNatt, 82, a resident of Winston-Salem for the past 54 years, died Feb. 8, 2001. He was born March 17, 1918, in Parkton, the youngest of eight children born to Mary Hancock McNatt and J.C. Dobbin McNatt. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and received a Master's Degree in Education from UNC-Greensboro. He served his country honorably during World War II in the Philippines and New Guinea. After World War II he worked for the Veterans Administration, taught school at Mineral Springs High School and was appointed veteran service officer for Forsyth County in 1965, retiring from that position in 1983. He proudly served his community in numerous volunteer activities including the United Way, March of Dimes, American Legion, Neighborhood Watch and Meals on Wheels. He served as president of Old Town Civic Club where he raised over $25,000 for the Craig Deal Kidney Transplant Fund. His efforts culminated in the forming of the Winston-Salem Kidney Foundation and he served as its first president. He was also a charter member of Forsyth County's chapter of the Lupus Foundation. He was an active member of First Presbyterian Church for over 50 years where he served as deacon, elder and Sunday school teacher. Until his death, he served as the treasurer of the Neal Anderson Bible class where he established the Robert Lake Scholarship Fund for Presbyterian students attending Presbyterian seminaries. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Madeleine Byrum McNatt; two sons, Charles Milton McNatt and wife, Trudy Brown McNatt of Fredericksburg, Va., and James Daniel McNatt and wife, Donna Dragon McNatt of Winston-Salem and four grandchildren, Heather Lynn McNatt of Charlotte, Regan Allison McNatt of Raleigh, James Daniel McNatt Jr. and Alexandra Margaret McNatt, both of Winston-Salem. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Feb. 11 at Vogler's Funeral Home, Reynolda Road, Winston-Salem. A military graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 12 at Forsyth Memorial Park. A memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church conducted by Dr. Jeff White, Dr. Russell H. Ritchel Jr. and the Rev. Donna McClellan. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Robert Lake Scholarship Fund and mailed to First Presbyterian Church.

MILLER

GREENSBORO - Lucille Miller, 84, of Greensboro passed away Thursday morning, Feb. 8, 2001, at the Evergreen Nursing Center. Services will be held Monday, Feb. 12, in Parkersburg, W. Va. Cox-Needham Funeral Home of Pilot Mountain will be in charge of the services.

POWELL

WALKERTOWN - Mr. Ronald "Red" Warren Powell, 54, of 6056 Cane Forest Drive, Walkertown, died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, at his residence. The funeral service will be at 4 p.m. Sunday at Hanes-Lineberry, Pierce Chapel in Kernersville. Mr. Powell was preceded in death by his parents, Roger Warren Powell and Evelyn Welch Powell, both of Kernersville. Survivors include his wife, Mary C. Powell of the home; daughter Cheryl P. Quesenberry of Fancy Gap, Va.; son Ronald David Powell of Hillsville, Va.; stepson David Ray Oliver of Kernersville; brother Michael W. Powell of Kernersville; sisters Elizabeth Ann Norman of King and Patricia Elaine Watson of Kernersville; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends 2-4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home before the service.

RAMSEY

Marie Payne Ramsey, 71, died Feb. 9, 2001. Survivors include four daughters, Dinah Craver of Clemmons, Teresa Gillespie of King, Emma Kendel of Pinnacle and Iva Ramsey of Tobaccoville; two sons, Danny Ramsey of Crossnore and Lawrence Ramsey of Kernersville; and seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 13, at Bowman-Rector cemetery in Marshall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Village Care, 440 Ingram Road, King, NC 27021. Arrangements by Memorial Funeral Chapel.

SMELCER

SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. - Myrtle Fowler Smelcer, 77, of Sevierville, Tenn., passed away Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, at Fort Sanders Sevier Medical Center. Mrs. Smelcer was a devout Christian and a Baptist by faith. Her husband, Buford B. Smelcer, daughter Judy Fox and brothers Stewart and Frank Fowler preceded Myrtle in death. She is survived by her daughter Brenda Garner and husband Robert, son and daughter-in-law David and Sibyl Shearin Smelcer, all of Winston-Salem; grandchildren Daniel Richard and William David Smelcer of Winston-Salem and Hollie Garner Hughes and husband Eric of Newton; great-grandchildren Garner and Zachary Hughes of Newton; brother Ralph Fowler and wife Colleen of Louisville, Tenn.; and sisters-in-law Elise Fowler of Michigan and Bernice Fowler of Sevierville. She will be greatly missed by several nieces, nephews and a host of loving neighbors and friends. Service will be 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 11, at Rawlings Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Stevan McClure officiating. Interment will be 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 12, at Pigeon Forge Baptist cemetery. The family will receive friends 6-7:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 11, at Rawlings Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers the family has requested that memorials be made to the First Baptist Church of Pigeon Forge cemetery Fund, 3290 Parkway, Pigeon Forge, TN 37863. Rawlings Funeral Home is honored to have been chosen to make the final arrangements for Mrs. Smelcer.

STUCKEY

Mr. Pearl Steen Stuckey, formerly of 1505 East 24th St., was born to the late Will and Hattie Stuckey in Kershaw, S.C. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a resident of Winston-Salem for most of his life. Mr. Stuckey was a retiree of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., a former employee of Modern Chevrolet and a member of Shiloh Baptist Church, where he served on the Spiritual Choir and the Usher Board. He was an avid checker player and enjoyed hunting. He was predeceased by his brother John Stuckey, his sister Eunice Stuckey and his wife, Viola Stuckey. Surviving are two grandsons, Willie Beasley of the city and Charles Williams of Darby, Pa.; one devoted sister-in-law, Mrs. Edna Williams of the city; two great-grandchildren, Shameaka and Amani Williams; one great-niece, Doretha Manning, and devoted cousins Mr. and Mrs. Hilliard, all of the city; and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb 12, at Shiloh Baptist Church. Dr. Paul A. Lowe will officiate, and interment will follow in the Evergreen cemetery with military rites. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service (12:30-1 p.m.) at the church. (Hooper)
