Clyde (Wayne) Wood, 36, of Winston-Salem died last weekend at N.C. Baptist Hospital after an extended illness. Surviving are his father Phillip Wood, his brother Donnie Wood, his grandmother Mamie Shelton, and one son, Carl Wayne. The family is being served by Vogler Funeral Home on Reynolda Road. Wayne will rest in peace at Parklawn Memorial Gardens in Winston-Salem. The family has asked not to have a service. In lieu of flowers memorials can be made at First Union Bank, 3288 Silas Creek Parkway, Winston-Salem, NC 27103, c/o the Clyde Wayne Wood Assistance Fund.

ADAMS

YADKINVILLE - Mr. Gaston C. "Cotton" Adams, 78, of Union Cross Church Road passed away Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, at his home. He was born April 5, 1922, in Yadkin County to the late John Wesley and Hattie Bovender Adams. Mr. Adams was a lifetime member of Union Cross Friends Meeting where he served the church in various capacities. He was a veteran of World War II serving with the U.S. Army. Mr. Adams was a retired farmer and carpenter, and retired from UNIFI Inc. He was retired with 20 years of service as a member of the Fall Creek Fire Department and also served on the board of directors. Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Mary Ruth H. Adams of the home; a daughter, Frances (Paul A.) Wooten of East Bend; four sons, Robert W. (Brenda) Adams, and Gaston Eugene (Darlene) Adams all of Yadkinville, Jerry C. (Sharon) Adams of East Bend and Jack R. (Sharon) Adams of Clemmons; grandchildren Paul A. (Jamie) Wooten Jr. Dara W. (Michael) Davis, Susan A. (Allen) Fletcher, Donald Adams, Ronald Adams, Shannon Adams, Heath Adams, Kara Adams, Geoff Adams and Andrea Adams; four great-grandchildren, Casey Davis, Wes Fletcher, Courtney Wooten and Chelsey Wooten; a sister, Vivian Harrison of Yadkinville; and three brothers, Jasper Adams of Yadkinville, LeeRoy Adams of East Bend and John Adams of Yadkinville. Mr. Adams was preceded in death by a brother, Claude Adams and a sister, Opal Williams. His funeral service will be held 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Union Cross Friends Meeting by Dr. Jerry Gibbons, the Rev. Reece Wall and James Williams. He will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Gentry Family Funeral Service on Highway 601 N., Yadkinville. ALLEN

Mr. Clarence James Allen, 82, of 510 Kinard Drive passed away Sunday, Jan. 28, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Feb. 8, 1919, in Timmonsville, S.C., to the late Alonza and Anna James Allen. Mr. Allen retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. with more than 40 years of service. Surviving are his wife, Louella; a daughter, Carlene; two sons, James (Shirley) Allen and Robert Allen; three grandsons, Deray, T' Shawn and Cedric; two great-granddaughters, Sha'Ray and Dez' Ray; a favorite cousin, Narcissa Orange; a niece, Virginia Watson; a nephew, Alex Allen; and a host of relatives and friends. Funeral services will be 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, at Hooper Funeral Home with the Rev. Samuel J. Cornelius officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen cemetery. The family will receive friends from noon until 12:30 p.m. at the funeral home. The procession will assemble and leave from the residence at 11:45 a.m. Thursday. (Hooper)

BEAN

GERMANTON - Mr. Edward D. "Ed" Bean, 65, died unexpectedly Tuesday, January 30, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born in Forsyth County to the late Charlie E. Bean, Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Vaughn Bean. He was a Wake Forest alumnus, a U.S. Army veteran and a successful business-man. Mr. Bean was a prayer warrior, an avid golfer, and a dedicated runner that had not missed a day running in 20 years. He is survived by his wife of 14 years, Frances Hodges Simmons Bean of the home; three children, Ann Mabe and husband Jason of Walnut Cove, Glenda Simmons of the home and Tommy Simmons and wife, Janet of Germanton; two brothers, Charlie E. Bean, Jr. and wife Delta of Rural Hall and Don Bean and wife Aleshia of Clemmons; six grandchildren, Jennifer Mills, Heather Myers, Marlene Mabe, Ashley Simmons, T. Mitchell Simmons, III and Alexander Simmons; three great-grandchildren, Ciera, Jade and Peyton. An 11 a.m. graveside service will be held Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, at Crestview Memorial Park. The Rev. John T. Byerly will officiate. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Burroughs Funeral Home and other times at the home in Germanton.

CALDWELL

Our beloved daughter, sister, aunt, cousin and friend, Ms. Peggy J. Caldwell, daughter of the late Ms. Carrie G. Caldwell, was called home Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. She was a member of Forbush Missionary Baptist Church in Yadkinville. Surviving are her loving father, Rufus Caldwell Sr. of Rock Hill, S.C.; two sisters, Ruby G. Wilkerson of Winston-Salem and Mamie (Joseph) Brown of Fort Washington, Md.; two brothers, Rufus (Margaret) Caldwell Jr. of Detroit and Larry (Melanie) Caldwell of Biloxi, Miss.; a very devoted and loving cousin, Sophia (Tom) Payne-Drake of Winston-Salem; four nieces, Glendalyn Hayden, Belinda Thomas, Karen Caldwell and Leslie Caldwell; three nephews, Sean Glenn, Dontrae Caldwell and Rufus Caldwell III; three great-nieces, Karissa Hayden, La'Tricka Payne-Drake and Cierra Payne-Drake; two great-nephews, Ricardo Thomas and Troy Hayden; and a host of family and friends. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Parker Funeral Home, 870 Saluda St., Rock Hill, S.C. The wake will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, and the funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Rock Hill. CROUSE

Mr. Roy Lee Crouse, 70, of 587 Napco Road died at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem on Jan. 29, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Bobbie Jean Maines Crouse of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Ricky Lee and Joann Crouse of Sparta; and two granddaughters, Brenda Crouse and Thalassa Vanhoy of Sparta. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Wednesday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Crouse cemetery.

DONNELL

Magenta Stone Donnell, 74 of Reynolda Park Assisted Living, Winston-Salem, formerly of China Grove died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001. She was born April 24, 1926, in Robeson County. Mrs. Donnell was a graduate of Presbyterian Junior College, retired after 32 years with South Rowan High School, China Grove and was a former member of First United Methodist Church, China Grove. Surviving are her husband, who she married on July 11, 1951, James Harper Donnell of Welcome; a son, James Harper Donnell III; a daughter, Candy Donnell; two brothers, Arnold Stone of Lake Wylie, S.C. and Bob Stone of Harmony; a sister, Jo Ann Bracey of Fayetteville; and two grandchildren, Justin Donnell and Sarah Donnell. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Enterprise Moravian Church, Lexington with the Rev. Andy and the Rev. Sally Langford, former Pastors of First United Methodist Church, China Grove. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove. FURCHES

CLEMMONS - Mrs. Edna Mizell Furches, 89, of Clemmons died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was the widow of the late J. Frank Furches. She was born in Roper , N.C. on May 22, 1911, to John D. and Sarah Bateman Mizell. She was a graduate of Roper High School and East Carolina Teachers College, now ECU. She taught school for several years. During World War II, she worked for Allied Aviation and the office of flying safety. Mrs. Furches retired from the Phoenix Co. after 30 years of service in 1976. She is survived by a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel by the Rev. Samuel Murphy. Burial will follow in the Clemmons First Baptist Church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Wake Forest University or to the charity of the donor's choice.

HUNTER

BOONVILLE - Mr. Grady J. Hunter, 74, of U.S. Highway 601 passed away Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, at his home. He was born Sept. 3, 1926, in Yadkin County to the late Otto and Mallie Caudle Hunter. Mr. Hunter was a veteran of World War II, where he served with the U.S. Army as a platoon sergeant. He was a member of Boonville Baptist Church, where he was a former Sunday-school teacher. Mr. Hunter was a retired farmer and was active in the government of Yadkin County, where he served as a county commissioner for 22 years. During this span of service he served on the Local and Regional Public Library Board; Mental Health Advisory Board; Certified Development Board; Emergency Medical Services Regional Council; Surry County Housing Consortium; Northwest Piedmont Council of Government; first vice president with the N.C. As-sociation of County Com-missioners Board of Directors; National Association of Counties Board of Directors; National Association of Counties Job Task Force; N.C. Board of Health; and the N.C. Association of County Commissioners Agriculture and Rural Affairs Steering Committee. Mr. Hunter was a member of the N.C. Tobacco Growers As-sociation, Yadkin County Tobacco Growers Association.; Yadkin County Corn Growers Association and was a former member of the A.S.C.S. State Committee. Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Nell W. Hunter of the home; his children, Glenda H. Chambers, David Chambers and grandson Jonathan "J.D" Chambers, all of Greensboro; Darlene (Eddie) Hampton and grandchildren Bridget Hampton, Nicholas Hampton, all of Elkin; Lynn (Dale) Rose and grandchildren Brian (Amy) Rose, Sarah Rose and Nathan Rose, all of Jonesville; Brent (Leshia) Hunter and grandchildren Landon Hunter and Jessica Hunter, all of Yadkinville; Josh Baity of Yadkinville; his sister, Mary Ruth H. Bolin of Boonville; special neighbor, the Junior Cave family; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Hunter was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters, William Lee Hunter, Irene Huff, Roy J. Hunter, Caldonia Burcham and Ann Casstevens. His funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Boonville Baptist Church by the Rev. Larry Thompson. He will lie in state 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in the Boonville cemetery with full military honors. The family will receive friends starting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Gentry Family Funeral Service on Highway 601 N., Yadkinville. JONES

PINNACLE - Mrs. Pauline Elizabeth Watson Jones, 89, the widow of James Thomas "Tom" Jones of 1660 Perch Road, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Jones was born March 10, 1911, in Stokes County to the late Ernest Giles and Bertha Gertrude Culler Watson. Mrs. Jones was a homemaker and a member of Pinnacle United Methodist Church. She was a charter member of Pinnacle United Methodist Women, a member of Pinnacle Garden Club and Pinnacle Senior Citizens Club. Survivors are a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy Ernestine and Wayne Eugene Leonard Sr. of Pinnacle; a grandson and wife, Wayne Eugene and Christy Jo Leonard Jr. of Deltona, Fla.; a granddaughter and husband, Nancy Elizabeth and Walter Cross of Asheboro; two great-granddaughters, Charley Jo Cross and Jamey Beth Cross; a great-grandson, Benjamin Lacy Cross; and a sister, Mabel Hunter, Greensboro. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by three brothers, Vade Watson, Wesley Watson and Billy Watson. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, at Pinnacle United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Kristen Bargeron and the Rev. Keith Newell. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, at Cox-Needham Funeral Home. KEEL

Mr. Fred Henry Keel of 1926 E. Third St. passed away at his home. He was a native of Chadburn, but had lived in Winston-Salem approximately 55 years. He retired from R.J. Reynolds Factory No. 8. He was a faithful member of Reynolds Temple CME Church for more than 50 years. He was the chairman of the steward board for 29 years, the men's choir and the senior usher board. He leaves to cherish his memory a devoted and loving wife of 52 years, Anna Lou Keel of the home; a stepson, Jimmie L. Holmes of the home; a godson, Robert A. Pettus of Winston-Salem; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; a play daughter, Linda Scales of Winston-Salem; two brothers, James (LeAr) Keel and Clarence (Mary) Keel of Chadburn; two sisters, Dorthphina James of Wilmington and Catherine Adams of Chadburn; two devoted friends, Mr. Freddie L. Jackson and Mr. Oscar Crockett; special caregivers, Mr. Greg Parker and Mr. Larry Sparks; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, at Reynolds Temple CME Church, with the Rev. James F. Goodwin officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2 p.m. at the church. The funeral cortege will assemble and leave from the residence. Arrangements entrusted to Gilmore Funeral Home.

KOZLOWSKI

Mr. Stanley John Kozlowski, 86, of the Brookridge Retirement Community, formerly of Chicago, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 30, at Forsyth Medical Center after a brief illness. Stan was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Army and was retired from the U.S. Postal Service. He was the beloved husband of Margaret Ellen Stallings Kozlowski and the father of Stanley John Kozlowski Also surviving are two fine grandsons, Mitchell Kozlowski of the U.S. Air Force and Matthew Kozlowski and wife Sandra of Houston, Texas, the parents of Stan's dear great-granddaughter, Sierra. Also surviving are two brothers, Lenny Kozlowski and wife Jean of Lady Lake, Fla., and Ed Kozlowski and wife Virginia and a sister, Florence, all of Chicago. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, conducted by the Rev. LOVELACE

MOUNT AIRY - Mrs. Betty Lovelace, 66, of 321 Forest Knoll Drive, the wife of Mr. Joe Lovelace, passed away Monday night, Jan. 29, 2001, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin. Mrs. Lovelace was born in Yadkin County on Sept. 19, 1934, daughter of the late Rob Joyner and Mrs. Jessie Jester Joyner Hinshaw. Mrs. Lovelace was retired as a clerk from Sprint and a member of Dover Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband, Mr. Joe Lovelace of the home; a daughter, Cindy Judd Hiatt of Mount Airy; a son, Danny Judd of Mount Airy; four grandchildren, Katie Hiatt and Jessica Hiatt and Hannah Judd and William Judd, all of Mount Airy; a sister, Peggy Moody of State Road; and a brother, Robert Joyner of Greensboro. The funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, at Dover Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. J. Cecil Hill. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Wednesday night at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, where her body will remain until carried to the church to lie in state 30 minutes before the funeral service. MURRAY

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Dorothy Nixon Murray, 82, of 3726 Luther Court, formerly of Winston-Salem, died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at Alamance Regional Medical Center in Burlington after a three-week illness. She was born in San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas, to the late Zebulon Vance Nixon and Florence Virginia Anderson Nixon. A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 2, at Parkway Presbyterian Church in Winston-Salem, with the Rev. Dan Wilkers, senior pastor, and the Rev. Jonathan Freeman, associate pastor, officiating. She was a member of Parkway Presbyterian Church for 34 years, where she served as an elder and a deacon. Mrs. Murray was a past president of the Officer's Wives' Club at the Air Force Academy, a member of the Garden Club of Winston-Salem and was a voter registrar and a poll judge. Surviving are her husband, Lt. Col. Henry Franklin Murray, USAF Ret., of the home; daughters Mrs. Karen M. Voisinet of Silver Spring, Md., and Mrs. Linda Murray Lane of Chapel Hill; three grandchildren; and a great-grandson. Me-morials may be made to U.S. Funds for UNICEF, Department 11251, 333 E. 38th St., New York, NY 10016, or to the American Red Cross, Northwest North Carolina Chapter, 690 Coliseum Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27106-5311. WARD

Mr. Richard David Ward, 79, of 4304 Countess Place died Jan. 29, 2001, at his residence. He was born Nov. 23, 1921, in Concord, Mass., to the late Charles M. and Mary Ellen Ahearn Ward. He was a member of Saint Benedicts Catholic Church. Mr. Ward attended Boston College, was a disabled veteran of World War II and retired from AT&T after 32 years of service. He was a lifelong member of the VFW, DAV and the American Legion and was a resident of Winston-Salem for the past 24 years. He was also a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. Mr. Ward was preceded in death by his first wife, Madeline; his daughter, Mary Ellen Beaton; and a brother, Charles J. Ward. Surviving are his wife, Mary Mahoney Ward; two daughters, Bonnie Cornwell of Nashville, Ga., and Anne Marie Ward of Winston-Salem; two sons, Kevin Ward and wife Linda of Wareham, Mass. and David Ward and wife Doreen of Pocasset, Mass.; 12 grandchildren, including Brendan Ward of Winston-Salem, 20 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson. A funeral mass followed by visitation will be held 6:30 Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Visitation and funeral services will be held in Wareham, Mass. February 2nd and 3rd with burial in St. Patrick's cemetery. Flowers are accepted or memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society (local chapters) or Hospice and Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. Wareham Village Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

WEAVIL

Mrs. Rachel Evelyn Reeve Weavil died Jan. 29, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She resided at Brighton Gardens in Winston-Salem. She was a former resident of Walnut Cove and Julian. Mrs. Weavil was born July 6, 1907, in Fairfield, Ind., to the late Hadley and Adaline Reeve. Rachel was the youngest and the last surviving of 14 children. She was a homemaker and a member of Westover Church in Greensboro. She was preceded in death by her husband, Verland A. Weavil, on Jan. 31, 1974. She is survived by a son, Jeff Weavil and wife Bennie of Germanton; grand-sons David Weavil and wife Athena of King and Darrell Weavil and wife Brenda of Winston-Salem; and great-grandchildren Kayleigh Weavil, Jonathan Weavil, Nicholas Weavil and Dylan Snow. A graveside funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Thursday at Shady Grove United Methodist Church cemetery in Wallburg, with Pastor Don Miller officiating. The family will receive friends after the service in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Shady Grove United Methodist Church cemetery Fund, c/o Judy Burrow, 620 Johnson Road, High Point, NC 27265, or to the charity of the donor's choice. Burroughs Funeral Home in Walnut Cove is serving the Weavil family.
