Tillman; grandchildren Aerial Nicole Blankenship, Leilonie M. White, Shelley L. White and Keith A. White II; great-granddaughter Lexis Marie Hancock; brother Lester Harrell; and sister Elvie Howard. ALLEN
HARMONY - Mr. Frankie Cleveland "Cowboy" Allen, 54, of Country Line Road died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, at Davis Regional Medical Center in Statesville. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at New Union Methodist Church, with the Rev. Caren Morgan officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The family will be at Eaton Funeral Home in Mocksville from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. They request memorials be considered for Sheffield-Calahaln Volunteer Fire Department for a defibrillator, 435 Dyson Road, Mocksville, NC 27028. Mr. Allen was born Dec. 19, 1946, in Forsyth County to the late Clarence Allen and Ruth Cope Allen Boger and worked for the department of transportation for 32 years. He was a founding member of Sheffield-Calahaln Volunteer Fire Department, had previously been lieutenant, captain and assistant chief and attended New Union United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, Gloria "Jeanie" Dyson Allen of the home; two sons, Gary (Alisa) Allen of Harmony and Terry Allen; a special friend, Tonya Houck; a stepbrother, Ray (Kay) Hollar; and stepfather, Charlie Boger of Advance.
CONRAD
Mrs. Henrietta "Pennie" Foster Conrad, 75, of Winston-Salem died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born May 25, 1925, in Winston-Salem to Henry Shuford and Mary Cochran Foster. As a young girl, she belonged to Girl Scout Troop 1, led by Mrs. Selma Clodfelter, who still has quarterly reunions of the group. She was a graduate of Gray High School where she played in the school band. She was a homemaker and a devoted wife and mother. For most of her adult life, she was an active member of Calvary Moravian Church where she served in many capacities. She was also a member of the Evangeline Rebekah Lodge #27 of Winston-Salem and the YWCA water exercise program. She is survived by her husband, Thomas K. Conrad of the home; a daughter, Teresa Leigh Conrad of Winston-Salem; a brother, James Foster and wife Barbara of Ormand Beach, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Evelyn D. Conrad; two brothers-in-law, James M. Conrad and wife Jacquelyn and Richard D. Conrad and wife Frankie all of Winston-Salem; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. She was recently preceded in death by a special sister-in-law, Nita Conrad Messick. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at Calvary Moravian Church. COOK
Mr. Charlie Lee Cook, 73, of Forest Oaks Drive, Dobson passed away unexpectedly Wednesday morning Jan. 31, 2001, at his home. He was born in Surry County to the late Rev. L.M. and Mary Wilmoth Cook. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, David Cook. Mr. Cook is survived by his wife of 48 years, Betty Southard Cook and by two daughters and sons-in-law, Dixie and Ron Atkins and Cindy and John McCormick , all of Dobson. He has two grandchildren, Sarah Sarda and Cody McCormick and four step-grandchildren, Steven and Shane Atkins and J.D. and Billy McCormick; a brother, Boyd (Bud) Cook of Dobson and three sisters, Betty Jo White of Roaring River, Pat Miracle of Georgia and Hallie White of Glade Valley. He always considered his in-laws as his own brothers and sisters, they are Sally Reynolds, Annie and Thomas Ray and Bill and Delores Southard, all of Elkin and Donald and Jean Southard of Winston-Salem, also a special niece and her husband, Tracy and Richard Burleson of Tobaccoville. He loved his pets and will be sorely missed by Chloe, Chester, Bayzil, Oliver and "Little Bit." Mr. Cook was retired from the U.S. Army with a career that expanded over 25 years of total military service. He fought bravely with troops during the Korean Conflict and during the Vietname War. He received two bronze stars and a Silver Star for acts of bravery and heroism and four purple hearts. Upon his retirement from service, he worked as a police officer for the town of Dobson until 1981. He was an active member of the Dobson Lions Club and a volunteer for Surry County having served in the Adult Care/Nursing Homes Community Advisory Committee and the Planning Board of the town of Dobson. He leaves behind a multitude of friends and neighbors who will miss him greatly for he never met a stranger. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, at Bessie's Chapel Baptist Church in Elkin with burial in the church cemetery. A graveside military service will be held by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Honor Guard Post 2019 Mount Airy and Post 9436 Pilot Mountain. His body will remain at Davis and Son Funeral Home in Dobson until taken to the church to lie in state 30 minutes before the service. The family will receive friends at Davis and Son from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Dobson Lions Club, to Bessie's Chapel Baptist Church or to the American Cancer Society in memory of his deceased brother-in-law, Earl Reynolds.

PILOT MOUNTAIN - Funeral services for Elder Thomas Roland Dodd, 91, of 307 Old Highway 52 will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Locust Grove Primitive Baptist Church in Westfield. Elder James L. Martin will be the eulogist. Burial will be in France Memorial cemetery in Pinnacle. He was born in Stokes County on March 5, 1909, to the late Carl and Sennie Taylor Dodd. He was a retired farmer and a minister. Surviving are three daughters and two sons-in-law, Ms. Glennie Mae Dodd of the home, Mrs. Margie (James) Johnson of Winston-Salem and Mrs. Opal (Glenn) Brim of Ararat, Va.; three sons and three daughters-in-law, Andrew (Minnie) Dodd of Belews Creek, Roland (Diandre) Dodd of Winston-Salem and Thomas (Karen) Dodd of Poplar Bluff, Mo.; 18 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; a brother, George Dodd of Steelton, Pa.; and other relatives and friends. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 Friday evening in the chapel of Spencer Funeral Home.

MOUNT AIRY - Mr. Granville Curtis Easter, 61, husband of Mrs. Allie Portis Easter, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Mr. Easter was born in Surry County Jan. 27, 1940, to the late George Curtis and Leodie Hiatt Easter; he was self-employed and attended Faith and Gospel Church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Allie Portis Easter of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Allen and Juna Easter of Mount Airy; two grandchildren Hope Easter and Matthew Easter of Mount Airy; a sister, Shelby Hedrick of Mount Airy; and a brother, David Easter of Mount Airy. Funeral services will be held 12:30 p.m. Saturday Feb. 3, 2001, at the Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy with services conducted by the Rev. Bill Gammons. Burial will follow in the Portis Family cemetery. The family will receive friends 7 to 9 Friday night at the funeral home in Mount Airy.

Mr. Arthur "O.C." Harden, 90, of 4297 Wilkes Drive passed away Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, at his residence. He was born Nov. 10, 1910, to the late Robert and Annie Harden and spent the majority of his life in North Carolina. Arthur was a veteran of World War II and was retired worker of Forsyth Medical Center. He was a longtime member of the Piney Grove Baptist Church and community. He is survived by a brother, Robert Louis Harden of Philadelphia; a sister, Dorothy Harden Bowen of Atlanta; several devoted nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, in the chapel of the Russell Funeral Home. Interment will be in the family plot of the Piedmont Memorial Gardens. EAST BEND - Mr. Harry Lee Helton, 92, of 2628 Rockett Road, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He was born in Yadkin County on Aug. 5, 1908, to Charles Walter and Mary Branon Helton. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Alfred and Bill Helton and a sister, Georgia Horton. Surviving are his wife, Margaret Inez Cornelius Helton of the home; two daughters, Joan Helton (Edward) Hobson of Raleigh and Margaret Helton (Leon) Wooten of East Bend; four sisters, Gladys Hoots of Hamptonville, Ina Wagoner of Elkin, Hattie Weatherman of Winston-Salem and Mary Hazel Helton of Yadkinville; five grandchildren, John E. (Shirley) Hobson of Raleigh, Gregory H. (Diana) Hobson of Lynchburg, Va., Robin Wooten of Greensboro, Sherry Wooten of Charlotte and Alison (Kent) Shore of Knoxville, Tenn.; and seven great-grandchildren, Lauren Hobson, Sandi Hobson, Jake Hobson, Chad Hobson, Lindsay Shore, Travis Shore and Nicholas Wooten. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday Feb. 2, 2001, at the Union Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Kenny Gooden. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. MESSICK
Ronald Lee Messick, 62, of 3647 Emma Ave. went to his heavenly mansion on Feb. 1, 2001. He was born Dec. 24, 1938, to W.M. and Margaret Messick, and was a lifelong resident of Winston-Salem. He graduated from Griffith High School. Mr. Messick retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. with 31 years of service in the tobacco processing department. He was of the Baptist faith and taught Sunday school, sang in the church choir and played softball. His faith in God sustained him, even through his years of declining health. Mr. Messick was an accomplished artist and spent many afternoons restoring antique Chevrolet trucks. He enjoyed family trips to Topsail Island, and watching NASCAR races and Duke basketball and Atlanta Braves games. He was fond of lighthouses, and to those who loved him, he was a beacon of light. He unselfishly gave comfort, love, support and safe harbor. Mr. Messick was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Helen M. Jones. He leaves to cherish his memory a devoted and loving wife of 41 years, Karlene B. Messick of the home; three daughters, Teresa (Walt) Metz of Dallas, Texas; Ronda (Ed) Bumgardner and grandson Lowell of Winston-Salem; Sara (Larry) McGarvey and granddaughter Natalie of Winston-Salem. He was a special grandfather to Miles and Julian Bumgardner. His surviving brother and sisters, William R. (Wella Mae) Messick; Elaine Myers; and Alice (Worth) Shuman, also share in his legacy of love. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 4, at Forsyth Memorial Park with Chaplain Fred Moretz officiating. Mr. Robert J. Miller, 41 of Winston-Salem died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001. He was born Nov. 11, 1959, in St. Petersburg, Fla. to Martha K. and E. Jay Miller. Surviving are his mother and stepfather, Martha and David Keating of Oak Island; father, E. Jay Miller of St. Petersburg, Fla.; son, Mack A. McCall of Ohio; and two sisters, Debra S. Super-Duke and husband Terry Duke of Lake Worth, Fla. and Patti Ann Miller of Laurel, Md. A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.

HIGH POINT - Mrs. Mildred Lucille Craven Motsinger, 96, of 1387 Abbotts Creek Church Road died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, in Long Beach, Calif. She was born Oct. 30, 1904, in Davidson County, a daughter of Evanderman Monroe and Eliza Jane Wyre Craven. She was a member of Abbotts Creek Primitive Baptist Church. She was married April 11, 1925, to Clyde William Motsinger. He died Aug. 21, 1996. She was also preceded in death by a son, Danny Motsinger. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Doris M. Walker of Lakewood, Calif. and Mrs. William (Nancy) Boger of Raleigh; two sons, W. Leon Motsinger and his wife, Lucille of Kernersville and James M. "Jim" Motsinger of Wilmington; a sister, Mrs. Mary Frances Craven of High Point; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Ellen Craven; 14 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home Wallburg Chapel by Elder Steve Nichols and Elder J.A. Langham. Burial will be in Abbotts Creek Missionary Baptist Church cemetery. The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. ADVANCE - Mr. Garland Edward Oehman, 81, of Shady Lane died Tuesday evening at Forsyth Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel. Burial will be in Bethania Moravian Church Graveyard. Mr. Oehman was born in Forsyth County on Nov. 12, 1919, the son of Herman Eugene and Addie Mae Spainhour Oehman. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean conflict and retired from the U.S. Postal Service. Mr. Oehman was a member of Hope Baptist Church, was an avid bowler and worked for many years with the Boy Scouts. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen O. Oehman in 1981. Surviving are his wife, Jerry Tuttle Bailey Oehman of the home; a daughter, Carol Ann Brown of Pfafftown; a son, Daniel E. Oehman and wife Emma Jean of King; a stepson, Delbert Bailey of Advance; two stepdaughters, Teresa Holt and husband Gary of Advance and Cindy Benson and husband Robin of Mocksville; six grandchildren, Karen Cearbaugh, David Brown, Christopher Oehman, Jamey Holt, Brittany Holt and Palmer Benson; two great-grandchildren, Cali Oehman and Landon Oehman; two sisters, Mabel Tuttle of Clemmons and Catherine Canter of Pfafftown; and a brother, Bruce Oehman of Illinois. The family sends a special thanks to Dr. Charles S. Stinson and the staff of the fifth floor at Forsyth Medical Center for the care they provided Mr. Oehman. YADKINVILLE - Miss Ruth Alzena Parsons, 74, of Yadkinville died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, at Britthaven of Wilkesboro. Miss Parsons was born in Ashe County on June 25, 1926, to the late Heg and Vena Miller Parsons and was a member of Obids Baptist Church in Ashe County. She was a secretary at Ferrell Realty Co. in Winston-Salem for 45 years. During her long illness she often expressed her appreciation for the excellent care given her by the physicians, nurses and staff at the WFU/Baptist Medical Center and Paul Sticht Rehabilitation Center. The family wishes to express their thanks to the personnel at Britthaven of Wilkesboro and Hospice of Alexander County for their care-giving services. Also preceding her in death were three sisters and three brothers. Surviving are her son, Barry Parsons of Winston-Salem; two brothers, Jones W. (Paralea) Parsons of China Grove and James F. Parsons of Yadkinville; a sister-in-law, Ella Parsons of Yadkinville; several nieces and nephews, grandnieces and nephews; and many former co-workers and other friends. Mrs. Bettie Bobbitt Pritchard, 72, of Winston-Salem died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, at her residence. She was born March 1, 1928, to Louis Richard Bobbitt and Florence Shugart Bobbitt. She was a member of First Baptist Church and the Elizabeth Barnette Sunday school class. Mrs. Pritchard was married to Charlie Gray Pritchard on Oct. 23, 1949. Surviving are her husband of the home; her daughter and son-in-law, Cindy Pritchard (Tony) Martin of Tobaccoville; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Betty and G.R. "Jack" Gordon of Winston-Salem; and a nephew, Lee Gordon of Washington, D.C. LEXINGTON - Mr. John Henry Reid, 68, died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001. He was born April 18, 1932, in Davidson County to George Henry and Ethel Shoaf Reid. Mr. Reid was a member of Hopewell Moravian Church and the Men's Bible Class. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during the Korean conflict. He retired from Stroh Brewery. Mr. Reid was a kind, gentle and caring person and will be greatly missed by all his family and friends. Surviving are his wife, Patty H. Reid of Winston-Salem; two brothers, Lester Reed and Paul Reed; five sisters, Catherine Forrest, Rachel Turner, Christine Darnell, Georgia Myers and Pansy Trantham, all of Lexington. Mrs. Juanita Sims Rickard aka Juany was born July 9, 1940, in Winston-Salem the daughter of Debbie Sims and Julius Govan. She departed this life Tuesday morning, Jan. 30, 2001, at N.C. Baptist Hospital following a brief illness. She leaves to cherish her memory a daughter, Angela L. Sims; a son, Christopher L. Sims; six grandchildren, Antonia Sims, Antione Sims, Aquanette Sims, Aljerone Sims, Assante Sims and Christopher McDonald; two sisters, Mrs. Annette S. Lash and Mrs. Jacqueline S. Mr. Shore, aka Buck Shore, of 2931-B New Walkertown Road passed away Monday. Jan. 29, 2001, at his home. He was a native of Forsyth County. He is survived by three nieces, Estelle Anthony, Lucille Sawyer and Rose Anthony, all of Winston-Salem; a nephew, Jack Shore of Philadelphia; a great-niece, Clamil Givens of Winston-Salem; three great-nephews, the Rev. Clifton (Antoinette) Sawyer, Joseph Sawyer and William Shore of Winston-Salem; a sister-in-law, Melrose Shore of Winston-Salem; and several great-great-nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, at Douthit Visitation Center, 2920 Greenway Ave., with Thomie D. Douthit officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen cemetery.
