KELLY

RICHMOND, Va. - L. William Kelly Jr. died late Feb. 22, 2001, in Richmond, Va., after a courageous battle with multiple myeloma. He was born Feb. 7, 1940, in Greensboro. He graduated from Marion High School. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia, Phi Beta Kappa, in 1962 and his medical degree from the University's School of Medicine in 1966. He entered the U.S. Army assigned as a house staff officer to Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in Denver, Colo., and subsequently qualified for the 82nd Airborne Division stationed at Fort Bragg. He served as a battalion surgeon in Vietnam with the 1st of the 508, Third Brigade of the 82nd Airborne Division. After his tour of service he returned to Charlottesville, Va., where he completed his dermatology residency at the University of Virginia Hospital in 1971. Later that year he joined what was to become Dermatology Associates of Virginia and was a practicing physician until his retirement in June 2000. He was an attending physician at Chippenham, Johnston-Willis, St. Mary's, Henrico Doctors, John Randolph and Richmond Memorial Hospitals, and Southside Medical Center. He was a past president of both the Manchester Medical Society and the Virginia Dermatological Society, and was the secretary of the Richmond Dermatological Society. He was a member of the Richmond Dermatological Society, the Virginia Dermatological Society, the American Academy of Dermatology, the Masters of Dermatology, Richmond Academy of Medicine, Medical Society of Virginia and the AMA. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the Country Club of Virginia and the Virginia Chapter of the 82nd Airborne Association. He was an avid golfer and outdoorsman. He was predeceased by his son Robert Ellis Kelly and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard William Kelly Sr. In addition to his wife of 39 years, Julia Ellis Kelly, he is survived by his sons L. William Kelly III, his wife, Katherine, and grandson Harper Lee Kelly and Timothy Porter Kelly, who lives at Good Neighbor Village, all of Richmond; his daughter, Elizabeth Kelly Baicy, her husband, John, and grandson Joseph William Baicy of Winston-Salem; his brother, Robert Martin Kelly and his wife, Barbara, of High Point; his mother-in-law Frances Stephens Ellis of Westminster Canterbury, Richmond; his sister-in-law Cynthia Ellis Young and her husband, Walter K., of Doylestown, Pa.; his niece Cristie Good of Bethesda, Md.; and nephews Michael Kelly of High Point, and Stuart Young and Lane Young of Doylestown, Pa. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in Dr. Kelly's name to the Cawley Fund of the UVA Department of Dermatology in care of the Medical Alumni Association, Box 800776, Charlottesville, VA 22908, or to Good Neighbor Village Inc., Box 17782, Richmond, VA 23226. The family will receive friends 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Monday at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Avenue, Richmond. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church, Cary Street Road, Richmond. Burial will follow at Hollywood cemetery.

KIDD

Mr. Ronald Dean Kidd, 53, of Huntersville, died Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, at Duke Medical Center. He was born Aug. 4, 1947, in Forsyth County to Robert Glenn and Helen Setzer Kidd. Mr. Kidd was formerly employed with AMP and was a member of Christ Wesleyan Church. Surviving are son Chad Kidd and wife Aimee of Huntersville; daughter Cherie Kidd of Winston-Salem; grandson Kaleb Kidd; his parents of Winston-Salem; and sister Glenna Kidd of Oak Island. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. David Emery officiating. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hayworth Memorial Wesleyan Church, 1696 Westchester Drive, High Point, NC 27262.

LOFLIN

DENTON - The Rev. Foster R. Loflin, 90, of 2066 NC Hwy #109 S., Denton, died Friday, Feb. 23, at his residence. He had been in declining heath since November. He was born May 14, 1910, in Davidson County to N.E. Loflin and Venie Myers Loflin. He was a retired minister in the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church and had served as pastor of churches in Mocksville, Sandy Ridge, Shoals, Seagrove, Statesville and Albemarle. Surviving are wife Mabel Yates Loflin of the home; daughter Mrs. Fran L. Craven and husband Resal Craven of Scottsdale, Ariz.; grandchild Michael Craven of Taichung, Taiwan; brother Reid Loflin of Denton; and sister Ocie L. Fine of Denton. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 27, at Alleghany United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Peter McGuire and the Rev. Randy Lucas. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will see friends 6:30-8:30 p.m. Monday at Briggs Funeral Home.

LONG

Miss Frances Marie Long, 42, of 1070 Maggies Road, Westfield, passed away Friday morning, Feb. 23, 2001, at Baptist Hospital, Winston-Salem. She was born Feb. 10, 1959, in Forsyth County to Alton Gray and Jacqueline Beckner Long. She was of the Baptist faith. Survivors are her mother, Jacqueline Beckner Long; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Grace L. Moore of Westfield, Ruth and Steve Landry of Doyline, La., Rose and Jerry Wall of Pinnacle, and Judy Long of East Bend; two Brothers, Robert Long of Boonville and Jerry Long of Santa Maria, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 26, at Cox-Needham Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Mark Mashburn, OSL. Interment will follow in the Tabernacle United Methodist Church cemetery, Kinley Drive, Tobaccoville. The family will receive friends at Cox-Needham Funeral Home 7-9 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 25, and other times at the home of Grace Moore, 1070 Maggies Road, Westfield. The Long family is being served by Cox-Needham Funeral Home, Pilot Mountain.

MUNNELLY

Mr. Leonard V. Munnelly, 81, of Winston-Salem, formerly of Richmond, Va., and Glen Rock, N.J., died Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born April 8, 1919, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Francis Joseph and Mary Loretta Leonard Munnelly. He was retired after 41 years with Maxwell House Coffee in Hoboken, N.J. He served with honor in the 54th division of the U.S. Army in battle under General Patton in World War II. Surviving are his loving wife of 58 years, Mrs. Ursula Swift Munnelly of the home; three sons, Vincent Munnelly of Florida, William "Bill" Munnelly and wife Carol of Springfield, Mo., and Bud Munnelly and wife Margie of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren, Chris, Sean, Michael and Ashley Munnelly; two nieces, Eileen Lazar and Diane Westfall; one nephew, Dr. Richard Westfall; and a large extended family. A funeral mass will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Holy Family Catholic Church with the Rev. Frank O'Rourke officiating. Burial will follow in Salisbury National cemetery. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Sunday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. PERDUE

Mr. Richard "Dick" Dewey Perdue, 69, of 9014 Huntsman Road, Kernersville, died Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, at the Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center. He was born in Mercer County, W. Va., a son of the late Clinton D. and Barbara Harrell Perdue, was a member of the Kerwin Baptist Church and a retiree of Anchor Motor Freight after 25 years of service. He was a member of Local 391 Teamsters Union. Surviving are his wife of 43 years, Charlotte Hale Perdue, of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Clinton Richard "Rick" and Julie R. Perdue of Walnut Cove; two grandchildren, Michala M. Perdue and Brandon L. Perdue; two sisters, Patricia P. Handy of Princeton, W. Va., and Betty P. Ramey of Bristol, Va.; and one niece and three nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at the Hayworth-Miller Cain Funeral Home chapel by Dr. Joe Myers with entombment to follow in the Gardens of Memory Mausoleum. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the Kerwin Baptist Church, 4520 Old Hollow Road, Kernersville, NC 27284.

RHODES

GREENSBORO - Mrs. Joan Holt Rhodes, 60, of 911 Sunset Drive died Feb. 23, 2001, at Wesley Long Hospital. There will be a memorial service at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 26, in the First Presbyterian Church, where she was a member. A native of Burlington, she was the daughter of Mr. And Mrs. James A. Holt. She graduated from Burlington Williams High School and attended Greensboro College. Joan lived in Greensboro for most of her life. She was a Sunday-school teacher and a Friendship Day coordinator. She was a member of the Agape Sunday School Class and Circle #9. She and her husband were junior- and senior-high youth advisers at the church. She was a member of the Greensboro Symphony Guild and the Alexis de Tocqueville Society. Mrs. Rhodes is survived by her husband, Bob Rhodes; one daughter, Kimberly Rhodes Whitacre and her husband, Jeff, of Greensboro; one son, Charles Robert Rhodes II and his wife, Laura, of Greensboro; two sisters, Janice Holt Sykes of Winston-Salem and Sue Holt Paris of Burlington; and one granddaughter, Allison Whitacre of Greensboro. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Music or Organ Funds or to the charity of the donor's choice. The family will receive friends after the service in the Virginia Gilmer Room at the church. Forbis & Dick North Elm Street Chapel is handling the arrangements.

SANDER

Jane Caroline Sharpe Sander, 77, the wife of William Sander, died Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, at 6 p.m. Born in Queens, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late David Victor Sharpe and Jenny Garttner Sharpe. Raised in Ridgewood, N.Y., in a cold-water flat, she was a graduate of Queens College, where she sang in the Queens College a cappella choir and the choral society. She taught high-school biology in the New York public schools. After marrying she stayed home to raise her four children. She was an active member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Farmingdale, N.Y., where she sang in the Bach choir and was active in the Lutheran Church Women. She taught Sunday school, confirmation class, vacation Bible school and Christian education for the mentally retarded. She was president of the New York Metropolitan Synod of Lutheran Church Women and led many retreats and workshops. Her second career was as a special educator at Burr's Lane Junior High School. Jane retired to Winston-Salem with her husband, Bill, in 1988. Since then she has been an active member of Augsburg Lutheran Church, a Meals-on-Wheels volunteer, a literacy teacher and a volunteer at Crisis Control. She was president of Branch 8234 of Lutheran Brotherhood. Surviving are her husband of 50 years, William Sander; four children, Jean Moser and her husband, Jack, Alan Sander and his wife, Fran, Amy Montanez and her husband, Nick, and Eric Sander and his wife, Loretta; her sister, Ruth Sharpe Goodnight; grandchildren Ross and Lauren Sander, Brian and Michael Moser, Maria Montanez, and Matthew, Michelle and Nicholas Sander; and nieces and nephews Lee, Valerie, David and Barbie. Services will be held at noon Tuesday, Feb. 27, at Augsburg Lutheran Church with interment of ashes at a later time in the columbarium. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Monday, Feb. 26, at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home. SCOTT

HOUSTON, Texas - Mrs. Jacqueline Denise Sloop Scott, 65, passed on to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, in Houston, Texas. Mrs. Scott was born in Elkin on May 23, 1935. She lived in North Carolina most of her life. She worked for the N.C. Department of Social Services for 37 years. Her husband was the late Harold Dennis Scott. She is survived by her son, John G. Scott of Annapolis, Md.; and her two beloved grandchildren, Megan J. Scott and Johnny G. Scott. A memorial service for Mrs. Scott will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28, at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Chapel. Dr. Jerry Murray and the Rev. Brian Rainbow will officiate.

SHELTON

PINNACLE - Mr. Eddie "Ed" Wilson Shelton, 60, of 3498 Volunteer Road passed away Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, at the Northern Hospital of Surry County. He was born June 26, 1940, in Stokes County to Edgar Curtis and Ommie Lee Lane Shelton. He was a dockworker for Yellow Freight Co., an avid golfer and sports enthusiast, and of the Baptist faith. Survivors are his wife, Barbara Posey Shelton of the home; one stepson, Jeffrey Allan Joyce of Tenafly, N.J.; two sisters, Judy Forrest of Pinnacle and Katie Koontz of High Point; one brother, Curtis Melvin Shelton of Pinnacle; two stepgrandchildren, Kerry Isobel Joyce and Sean Triston Joyce; and his mama-in-law, Mintoria Bowman Posey of Pinnacle. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 26, 2001, at Cox-Needham Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Ronald Lee. Interment will follow in the Olive Grove Baptist Church cemetery. There will be no formal visitation at the funeral home. Family members may be contacted at their respective homes. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 550 E. SLEAP

Miss Katherine "K.T." Mary Sleap, 17, of Winston-Salem, formerly of Kenmore, N.Y., died suddenly Thursday morning from a motor-vehicle accident. Katie was a well liked, popular senior at R.J. Reynolds High School. She participated in the all-county and all-state orchestras along with serving as co-president of the Girls Council at Reynolds. She was a six-year member of the Winston-Salem Youth Symphony and played in the first violin section. Katie earned a Girl Scout Gold Award in 1999 by instructing violin music for youth along with concert performances for seniors. She was a member of the Kid Commerce Program. In 1998 she earned a MMBA (mini master's in business administration) in business and started her own business, "Katie's Violin Academy". Katie lived life to the fullest, bringing joy and laughter to many friends and family. She was predeceased by her maternal grandfather Dr. Richard L. Johnson, "Papa". She is survived by her parents, Richard E. and Monica L. Sleap, and her sister, Jennifer Leigh Sleap, all of Winston-Salem; maternal grandmother Irene K. Johnson of Cary; paternal grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Robert E. Sleap of Kenmore, N.Y.; numerous aunts and uncles, Mr. and Mrs. Charles T. Goebel of Lake Forest, Calif., Mary K. Johnson of Kenmore, N.Y., Dr. and Mrs. Peter C. Johnson of Wexford, Pa., Mr. and Mrs. Patrick L. Johnson of East Amherst, N.Y., Mr. and Mrs. Carey Fleming of Boyds, Md., Ms. Madonna Johnson of Durham, Mr. and Mrs. David J. Jacobius of Pfafftown, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph W. SPURLOCK

Mrs. Jacqueline Crawford Brown Spurlock of 5435 Leslie Drive departed this life Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001, at the Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center. She was the daughter of the late Robert W. and Edna Marie Crawford Brown Jr. and the granddaughter of the late Robert W. Brown Sr., former principal of Woodland Avenue School and founder of the Winston Mutual Life Insurance Co. She was married to the late Frank Louis Spurlock. Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 1, at Christ the Shepherd Lutheran Church, Altadena, Calif. She is survived by her loving family, Frank Louis Spurlock Jr. (Trena) of Altadena, Robert Alan Spurlock (Carolyn) of Pasadena, Calif., Deborah Marie Spurlock and Sheryl S. Bryant (Michael) of Winston-Salem; 10 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; one brother, Donald E. Brown (Evelyn) of Claremont, Calif.; two aunts, Hattie S. Brown of Winston-Salem and Lena Brown of Greenville; and cousins Amos W. Harper, Allette Crump (Roy), Frances H. Brown and Teresa Lytle, all of Winston-Salem. WALNUT COVE - Mr. Howard Monroe "Red" Taylor, 77, died Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born in Stokes County to Ressie Ann Taylor Howell. He was of the Baptist faith, a World War II Army veteran, a lifetime member of Walktertown VFW Post No. 10471 and a machine operator at R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. for 33 years and four months. He loved his family, the beach and farming. Preceding him in death in addition to his mother were his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Franklin Taylor, foster parents, Mr. and Mrs. "Ab" Reid, and his parents-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Rufus Mabe. Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Thelma Mabe Taylor of the home; three children, Geraldine T. Venable and Howard F. "B C" Taylor (Lynn) of Walnut Cove and Shirley T. Pew (Dean) of Walkertown; five grandchildren, Penny V. Brown, Jennifer Taylor, Michelle Taylor, Lisa Taylor and Molly Torres; four great-grandchildren, Kelli Brown, Andrew Esquivel, Paul and Sammy Torres; his dog, Precious; and a host of friends and neighbors. A 2:30 p.m. funeral service will be held Monday, Feb. 26, at Clear Springs Primitive Baptist Church with burial following in the church cemetery. Elder William Dodson and the Rev. Tom Southern will officiate. The family will receive friends 7-9 this evening at Burroughs Funeral Home and other times at the home. TEMPLE

PENSACOLA, Fla. - Mr. Norman Pierce Temple, 77, of Pensacola, Fla., passed away Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001. He was the son of the Rev. Dewey L. and Mittie Clodfelter Temple. He fought in World War II, where he received a Purple Heart. He was preceded in death by his wife, Anne Vogler Temple, and three brothers, Ulyuss "Mac" Temple, David M. Temple and Richard J. Temple. Survivors include six children of Pensacola; three brothers, Willis D. Temple, Billy M. Temple and Dr. Don K. Temple; and two sisters, Delavinia Wagoner and Shirley Temple Hoyle. Memorial Services were held Thursday, Feb. 22, in Pensacola.

THOMAS

Mr. Irvin Hamilton Thomas Jr., 73, of Clemmons died Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Feb. 12, 1928, in Yadkin County to Irvin H. Thomas and Pernie Plowman Thomas, who preceded him in death. Also preceding him in death were one son, Irvin H. Thomas III; four brothers, Odell Thomas, Elwood Thomas, Warren "Doc" Thomas and Jimmy Thomas; and two sisters, Thelma Hobson and Pauline Fearington. Mr. Thomas was a member of Union Hill Baptist Church in Clemmons. He was an avid fisherman. Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Emma Brown Thomas, of the home; one daughter, Charlotte Ann Slater; two granddaughters, Amber Wilson and Emily Props; one great-grandson; several loving nieces and nephews; and many special friends. Funeral services will be at 3:30 p.m. Monday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. Timothy Gwyn officiating. Burial will follow in Westlawn Gardens of Memory. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Union Hill Baptist Church, 8494 Lasater Lake Road, Clemmons, NC 27012.

THRASHER

Gaynell Elizabeth Parrish Cansler Thrasher passed away and entered the light in January 2001. We miss her and her love and exuberance for life! A farewell memorial celebration will be held for her at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 3, at the First Presbyterian Church Recreation Building, 107 King St., Kings Mountain, N.C. Her daughter Diana Cansler Wheeler and son-in-law Michael B. Wheeler of St. Louis. Mo.; daughter Kay Cansler of Asheville; and son Samuel "Skip" Thrasher of Winston-Salem invite her family and friends to create this celebration of her life with us.
