VANHOY

Mr. Curtis Fulp Vanhoy, 71, of Kernersville died Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. Mr. Vanhoy was born in Forsyth County, a son of the late Arthur and Annie Fulp Vanhoy, was a retiree of the N.C. Department of Transportation and was a member of the Gospel Light Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Nelson Vanhoy, sister Allene Lankford and brothers Ernest Vanhoy and Herb Vanhoy. Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Sharon Vanhoy of Kernersville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Christene and Jerry Burgess of Kernersville, and Vicki Lynn and Max Ballard of Hickory; grandchildren and their spouses, Dawn Holloway and Cliff, Travis Burgess, and Tiffany C. Burgess, all of Kernersville, Shannon Vanhoy of Colfax, Wendy Bradford and Chris of Hickory, and Tina Johnson and Ken of Charlotte; great-grandchildren Jessica Holloway, Casey Holloway, Mason Bradford, Luke Johnson, Brandon Bell, Madison Bell and Sydney Bradford; three brothers, Henry Vanhoy, Fred Vanhoy and Demis Vanhoy; and five sisters, Ida Mae Norman, Vennie Speaks, Elizabeth McMichael, Edith Voss and Treva Williams. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at the Hayworth Miller Cain Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Frank Shumate with burial to follow in the Gardens of Memory in Walkertown. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home and at other times at 7076 Vance Road.

WALSER

WELCOME - Mabel Weaver Walser, 77, of North Leonard Road, died 7:10 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, in Forsyth Medical Center after a serious illness of three weeks. The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 26, in the Hickory Tree Chapel of Davidson Funeral Home by the Rev. Nathan Snider and the Rev. Donald Funderburk. Burial will be in Forest Hill Memorial Park. She was born in Davidson County Dec. 7, 1923, to Olin Thomas Weaver and Cordia Essick Weaver. She was a former employee of Dixie Furniture Co. and a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by a brother, Jack Edward Weaver. Surviving are her husband, L.V. Walser, of the home; sons Foyle Walser and wife Linda, and Eric Walser and wife Deborah of Welcome; grandchildren Angie Walser, Shane Walser, Brent Walser, Nick Walser and Justin Walser of Welcome; and brother Olin Gray Weaver and wife Peggy of Welcome. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Sunday in the Hickory Tree Chapel of Davidson Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home on North Leonard Road.

WHICKER

Mrs. Mary E. Vanhoy Whicker, 89, of Homestead Hills Assisted Living Center since March 2000 and formerly of 3961 Northampton Drive, Winston-Salem, died Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Aug. 18, 1911, in Forsyth County to D.H. Vanhoy Sr. and Lulu M. Vanhoy. Mrs. Whicker was a member of Oak Grove Moravian Church, where she was also a member of the Margaret Hammock Sunday school class and Women's Fellowship. She was preceded in death by her husband, J. Fred Whicker; a brother, Howard W. Vanhoy; and her parents. Surviving are a brother, D.H. Vanhoy Jr. of Winston-Salem, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001, at Oak Grove Moravian Church with the Rev. Norman Byerly officiating. Burial will follow in the church graveyard. Memorials may be made to Oak Grove Moravian Church, 120 Hammock Farm Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27105.

CHADWICK

The Rev. Claude Truett Chadwick, a Moravian minister and resident of Salemtowne, The Moravian Retirement Community, died Monday evening, Feb. 19, 2001. Mr. Chadwick, a member of Home Moravian Church, was born in Winston-Salem Nov. 1, 1924. He was the son of the late Howard Kenneth Chadwick and Kedie Undyne Myatt Chadwick. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Jo Anne Atkins Chadwick; his son, C. Truett Chadwick Jr. and his wife, Vicki Lynn; and his daughters, Lu Anne Chadwick Wood and her husband, B. Jeffrey Wood and Leigh Chadwick Beavers and her husband, Dr. Carl M. Beavers. His grandchildren are Benjamin Chadwick Wood, Christopher Jeffrey Wood, Leslie Anne Wood, Caroline Johnson Beavers, Michael Adam Beavers, Samuel Jacob Beavers and Matthew Carl Beavers. Also surviving are Mr. Chadwick's brother, Dr. Howard Chadwick and his wife, Helen, of Charlotte and two foster sisters, Mrs. June Carroll Mazyck of Winston-Salem and Mrs. Bettie Carroll Massey of High Point. Mr. Chadwick graduated as president and valedictorian of his senior class at Griffith High School in 1942. He received his bachelor's degree from Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pa., in 1945 and graduated from Moravian Theological Seminary with a Master of Divinity degree in 1947. While in college and seminary, he was the president of the student body, the director of the College Glee Club and pastor of Junior Church at Edgeboro. He taught an introductory course in Greek to college sophomores, was secretary of the Comenius Club and was selected Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges, 1945. His seminary thesis was entitled, "A Study of Evangelism in the Moravian Church". In 1947, upon graduation from seminary, he received the John David Bishop award for overall excellence. He was ordained into the Moravian ministry June 15, 1947 by the late Bishop J. Kenneth Pfohl and consecrated a presbyter, second order of the church by Bishop Pfohl on Dec. 30, 1951. Mr. Chadwick served the Moravian church for 35 years. He was called to Bethabara and Rural Hall Moravian Churches 1947 to 1949 when it was a dual pastorate. He then served Friedberg Moravian Church from 1949 to 1952, Friedland Moravian Church, from 1952 to 1961, Calvary Moravian Church, from 1961 to 1964, Rural Hall Moravian Church, from 1964 to 1975 and Konnoak Hills Moravian Church from 1975 to 1982. He also helped in the establishment of Park Road Moravian Church in Charlotte in 1961. He was active in the Moravian Church, Southern Province, serving as a member of committees and commissions as a trustee of Salem Academy and College, the Board of World Missions of the Moravian Church in America, as director of the Provincial Mission Society and of the Moravian Book and Gift Shop. He was involved in the camp ministry of the church and conducted preaching missions throughout the Northern and Southern Provinces. The governing body of the church, the Provincial Elder's Conference, appointed him as a delegate to the Fifth General Assembly of the World Conference in Nairobi, Kenya, in 1975, and in 1976 he represented the Southern Province at the U.S. Conference of the World Council of Churches. He was the first chaplain of the Forsyth County Sheriff's Department, serving from 1971 to 1985, during the terms of office of Sheriff Manly Lancaster and Sheriff Preston Oldham. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 21, at Vogler & Sons Funeral Home on Reynolda Road in Winston-Salem. The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, at Home Moravian Church, followed by the burial service at Bethania Moravian Church. Memorials may be made to Salemtowne, The Moravian Retirement Community, 1000 Salemtowne Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27106.

CRANFILL

BOONVILLE - Mrs. Polly Louise Stanley Cranfill, 80, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001, at N.C. Baptist Hospital. Mrs. Cranfill was born July 1, 1920, in Surry County to the Rev. Raleigh Stanley and Laura Jane Seymour Stanley. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roscoe Odell Cranfill; a daughter, Belinda Louise Cranfill; four brothers; and five sisters. Surviving are two daughters, Betty Adams and husband Bobby of Pfafftown and Bonnie Oliver and husband Verlin of Jonesville; three sons, Toby Cranfill and wife Ellen of Lexington, Johnny Cranfill of Jonesville and H.R. Cranfill of California; two brothers, Harry Raleigh Stanley of Georgia and Bill Stanley of Rural Hall; 21 grandchildren; 13 great-grand-children; and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, at Union Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Verlin Oliver. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 21, at Gentry Family Funeral Home, Highway 601 N., Yadkinville, and at other times at Polly's Apartment, 518 W. DOWELL

Mrs. Jo Ann Priddy Dowell, 61, of Winston-Salem died Tuesday, February 20, 2001, at her residence. She was born January 23, 1940, in Stokes County to Eulas David and Thelma Vaden Priddy. Mrs. Dowell was of the Baptist faith. Surviving are her mother of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Patricia Allen of Mr. Airy; a son, Mark Dowell and wife Renee, of Apex; two sisters, Sue Priddy Coats and Judy Priddy Slater, both of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren; Summer Allen, Lauren Allen, Erick Dowell and Ryan Dowell. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Dr. Judson Milam officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory in Walkertown. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

FLOYD

LEXINGTON - Lori Lopp Floyd, 25, of Lexington died Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2001. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at First Reformed United Church of Christ. Burial will be at Shiloh United Methodist Church cemetery. Surviving is her husband, Philip A. Floyd of the home. HUTCHENS

EAST BEND - Mrs. Carolyn Thomas Hutchens, 60, of 512 Cherry St. Extension died Feb. 21, 2001, at her home. She was born in Stokes County Aug. 11, 1940, to John W. and Opal Lawson Thomas. Mrs. Hutchens was a member of United Christian Church and was retired from Yadkin Nursing Center as a certified nursing assistant. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arville Ray Hutchens. Surviving are a daughter, Alicia Casstevens of Mount Airy; a son, Dean Hutchens of the home; three sisters, Hilda Britt and Susan Thomas, both of King, and Ellen Evans of Freeport, Fla.; two brothers, Larry Thomas of King and Richard Thomas of Whittier, Calif.; four grandchildren, Timothy, Joshua and Danielle Casstevens and Christy Maie Hutchens. Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, at the Stony Knoll United Methodist Church cemetery by the Rev. Gene Casstevens and the Rev. Walt Phillips. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Huff Funeral Home in East Bend.

KETCHIE

James Luther Ketchie, 71, beloved husband, father and grandfather died early Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001, after a six-month illness. He was born March 6, 1929, in Yadkin County and grew up in Winston-Salem, where he attended High Point College and was in the U.S. Naval Reserves. He spent his entire career in management and retired in 1991 from Gulton/-Femco Industries. He was a member of St. Timothy's Epis-copal Church, where together with his wife, Margaret, they raised their son and two daughters in the Christian faith. Mr. Ketchie was a great lover of family, the outdoors and gardening, and will forever be remembered by friends and family for his warmth, generosity, sense of humor, and tales of golf, fishing and other exploits. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Margaret Mock Ketchie; his son, James Michael Ketchie of Winston-Salem; and his daugh-ters, Melanie Ketchie Carlson of Winston-Salem and Christina Ketchie Stearns of Greensboro. He is also survived by his sister, Carolyn Lee Ketchie of Orlando, Fla. and five grandchildren. A reception and celebration of Mr. Ketchie's life will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, at the home of Ken and Melanie Carlson, 1281 Chester Road, Winston-Salem. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23, at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church in Winston-Salem. The family asks that donations, in lieu of flowers, be made either to the Rector's Discretionary Fund at St. Tim-othy's Episcopal Church or to the American Cancer Society.

LAMBERT

Ms. Alice Martha Lambert, 78, of Chesterfield, S.C., died Tuesday. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, at the funeral home. Funeral services will also be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, at Badger Funeral Home Chapel in West Jefferson. Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Colvard cemetery in Jefferson. Ms. Lambert was born in Jefferson, a daughter of the late George and Dora Barker Lambert. Ms. Lambert retired from Thomasville Furniture Co. She received an award from the National Red Cross for being the top blood donor in the country. She was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church in Jefferson. Ms. Lambert was preceded in death by eight brothers and two sisters. Survivors include three sons, Ralph Lambert and wife Shirley of Chesterfield, S.C., David Lambert and wife Judy, and Bill Lambert and wife Emma of Ruby, S.C.; a brother, Avery Lambert of St. Michaels, Md.; a sister, Mary Lambert of Jefferson; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Chesterfield Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 147 Chester-field, S.C. 29709.

LAURENCE

First child of Frank Boggan and Pauline McDaniel Cash, Julia Cash Laurence, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2001. Loving mother, homemaker, accomplished pianist, she was widowed from Fred Siewers Laurence Jr., to whom she was married 55 years. Julia was a graduate of R.J. Reynolds' Class of 1933 and served on their reunion committee. She also attended Salem College. She and her family had resided in Augusta, Ga., where they were members of Trinity-on-the-Hill Methodist Church. While in Augusta, she served as president of the Kingston Garden Club, before returning to her home in Winston-Salem in 1969. Julia also thoroughly enjoyed her friends in "The Bridge Club" which had been in existence since 1932. She is survived by two daughters and three sons, Fred S.(Pete) Laurence III, of Jacksonville, Fla., Frank C. Laurence of Victoria, Texas, Harriet N. Laurence of Highlands, Louis E. Laurence of Augusta, Ga., and Julie L. Wilson of Winston-Salem; and a brother, Paul Spencer Cash of Morganton. She also has five grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Elizabeth and Tab Williams Adult Day Center, 231 Melrose Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, by the Rev. Arnett Harris at Vogler's Clemmons Chapel. A graveside service will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. at the Forest Hills cemetery in Morganton. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Vogler's Clemmons Chapel.

PICKETT

Mrs. Thelma Ward Pickett, 88, of Forsyth Village, 5100 Lansing Drive, and formerly of 2920-H New Walkertown Road, passed away Monday, Feb. 19, 2001, at the Forsyth Medical Center. She was born April 14, 1912, and was married to the late James Pickett. She was a faithful and devoted member of the Oak Grove Baptist Church until her health failed. She is survived by a sister-in-law, Ruth Pickett of Chicago, Ill.; a devoted friend, Rachel Anthony of Walkertown and other friends. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, from the Oak Grove Baptist Church, 3978 Pine Hall Road, Walkertown, with the Rev. I.L. Anthony officiating. In-terment will be in the Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family visitation will be from 2:30 to 3 p.m. Friday at the church. (Russell)

Mr. Leon Eugene Porter, Sr., 80 of Winston-Salem, passed away Wednesday, February 21, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born March 6, 1920, in Grayson County, Va., to Rose Vaughan and Hurley Francis Porter. Mr. Porter was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was of the Methodist faith. He was the owner of Southern Insulation Co., a member of the Elks Lodge of Winston-Salem, a member of the Bermuda Run Country Club and an avid golfer and a sports fan. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Ruby Dodson Porter of the home; a son, Leon Eugene Porter, Jr., and his wife, Mary, of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Sherry Porter, and her husband, David, of Gastonia; six grandchildren, Mark, Meredith, Matthew and Michael Porter of Winston-Salem, and Dara and Brandon Porter of Gastonia; a great grandchild, Ashlyn Sawyer of Gastonia; an uncle, Cliff Vaughan of Winston-Salem; an aunt, Ethel Vaughan Williams of Greensboro; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to express their appreciation to Dr. Douglas Stewart. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, February 23, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with his nephew, Dr. Tim Porter, and Dr. Russell Ritchel officiating. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. SIEVERS

Mrs. Cecelia Mary O'Neill Sievers, affectionately known as Molly, 80, of Winston-Salem died Tuesday, February 20, 2001, at her residence. She was born Sept. 28, 1920, in Barcaldine, Queensland, Australia, to Michael and Mary Anne Quinn O'Neill. Mrs. Sievers was a member of St. Leo the Great Catholic Church. She was a former member of The Church of the Resurrection in Fort Myers, Fla, and St. James Catholic Church in Basking Ridge, N.J. She was a world traveler and an avid pinochle player. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Richard Sievers, and a sister, Katherine Devine. Surviving are three daughters, Priscilla A. Zambor and husband Ronald of Midlothian, Va., Lesley A. Hadley and husband Steven of New London, N.H., Marianne DeCristo and husband James of Winston-Salem; six grand-children; a sister, Mrs. Noreen Vander Beek of Jackson, Mich.; a sister-in-law, and Miss Anna C. Sievers of Bernardsville, N.J. A rosary service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Friday at the church, with the Rev. Cecil Tice officiating. A memorial Mass will be celebrated in New Jersey at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Association of Marion Helpers, Stockbridge, MA 01263. (Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is in charge of arrangements).

SMITH

Mr. Clyde "Whitey" Watson Smith, 72, died at the Forsyth Medical Center on Tuesday afternoon, February 20, 2001, after several months of declining health. He was born Sept. 23, 1928, in Forsyth County to the late Charles Watson and Mattie Poindexter Smith. Clyde was retired from Sara Lee Hosiery after 45 years of service. After his retirement, he converted his hobby of auto upholstering into a business and was owner/-operator of Smith Auto Trim in Rural Hall for more than 20 years. He was member of Kingswood United Methodist Church and a member of the Old Town Masonic Lodge No. 751. Clyde was also a veteran of the Korean War, having served in the U.S. Army. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Thurman A., Vance M. and Neil E. Smith, and one brother in-law, Edgar O. Hall. Mr. Smith is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Virginia "Jenny" Crews Smith of the home; one son, Michael A. Smith of Rural Hall; one sister, Rheba S. Hall of King; two sisters in-law, Mrs. Ella Mae Vanhoy and Mrs. Neil Smith. Other surviving family members include Mr. and Mrs. Wilburn Crews, Mr. and Mrs. Shirley Crews, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Crews, Mr. Howard Crews, Mrs. Betty Parrish and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home in Rural Hall. The Rev. Paul Dean will officiate. Burial will be in Crestview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends and relatives from 7 to 9 Friday evening at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

THOMAS

On Dec. 18, 1927, Mr. Charles Thomas, aka Coon, was born to the late Mary and William Thomas in Winston-Salem. Bright and early Monday, Feb. 19, 2001, at 6:30 a.m. he entered eternal rest. Mr. Thomas was a graduate of Kimberly Park School. He served in the U.S. Navy and was a former worker of Thomasville Furniture Co. In the last years of his life he resided at Pell Care Nursing Home. Mr. Thomas was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ben and Willie Thomas; and a sister, Virginia Thomas. He was greatly loved and will be truly missed. He leaves a legacy of love and family; a wife, Mrs. Delores Thomas; six sons, Charles L. Thomas, Norris Thomas, Dr. Claude D. Thomas (Marilyn), Olaf Thomas, Kenneth (Diane) Thomas, and Damon Thomas; five daughters, Louise Kirk, Wilma (Steve) Samuel, Sharon (Allen) Pinkney, Synthia (Leland) Salter, and Brenda (Donald) Lowery; a faithful sister, Mary Frances Callahan; a brother, Bobby Thomas of New York City; a host of grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; a devoted niece, Denise Norris; other relatives; and friends. Funeral services will be held at noon Friday from Genesis Victory Outreach Center where Dr. Claude D. Thomas will officiate, and burial will follow in Evergreen cemetery. The remains will be placed in the church at 11 a.m. to lie in state until the service hour. The family will receive friends from 11:30 a.m. to noon at the church. The funeral cortege will assemble and leave from 650 Grandville Drive, Apt. D108. Arrangements have been entrusted to Gilmore Funeral Home.
