TUCKER

Miss Doris Edna Tucker, 73, of Winston-Salem died Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001, at her home. She was born in Stanley County, a daughter of the late Alonzo E. Tucker and Mary Smith Tucker. She held a master's degree in math from UNC Greensboro and taught in Dillon, S.C., Albemarle and Winston-Salem. She held a master's degree from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and worked in churches in Columbia, S.C., and Richmond, Va. She is survived by two sisters, Eulalia T. Solomon of Winston-Salem and Rachel T. Kiser and her husband, Martin of Albemarle; a brother, Barrett B. Tucker and his wife, Elva of Badin. She is also survived by three nieces and two nephews. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23, in the Fairview Memorial Park in Albemarle by the Rev. Clay Waters of West Albemarle Baptist Church.

VANANTWERP

PINNACLE - Mr. Raymond James (Jim) VanAntwerp, Sr., 56, of 307 Hauser Road, Pinnacle passed away Tuesday morning, Feb. 20, 2001 at his home. He was born May 30, 1944 in St. Joseph, Mo. He was preceded in death by his parents, William R. and Ruth Lentz. Mr. VanAntwerp was a veteran of the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force, a telecommunications professional and of the Protestant faith. Survivors include his wife, Barbara Rash VanAntwerp of the home; three daughters, Latitia Badgett of Trenton, Mo., Jamie M. Eslick of Charlotte, and Candis R. VanAntwerp of Baldwin, Mich.; two sons, Raymond J. VanAntwerp, Jr. and AA Eric J. VanAntwerp, stationed in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Harry S. Truman; four grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Friday, Feb. 23, 2001 at Cox-Needham Funeral Home, conducted by Rev. Jim Berry. Interment to follow in the Pilot Mountain City cemetery with full military honors conducted by American Legion Post 290 in King. The VanAntwerp family will receive friends at Cox-Needham Funeral Home on Friday, one hour prior to the service from 1-2 p.m. The VanAntwerp family is being served by Cox-Needham Funeral Home in Pilot Mountain.

BAKER

Mrs. Mary Sims Shepherd Baker, 85, a resident of Brighton Gardens, died Wednesday morning at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mrs. Baker was born in Winston-Salem on April 18, 1915, the daughter of the Rev. E.T. and Sarah Hunter Sims. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and retired as head of the reception center at Old Salem. Mrs. Baker was preceded in death by two husbands, Kenneth A. Shepherd and L. Thomas Baker. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Kay L. Shepherd. Surviving are a daughter, Mary Shepherd Brown and husband, Dalton Brown, of Tucker, Ga.; a sister, Ruth Carter and husband, Frederick, of Winston-Salem and a brother, Robert H. Sims of Charlotte. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Vogler's Main Street Chapel by the Rev. James Woodring. The family will receive friends after the service and requests that any memorials be made to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

COLLINS

CASPER, Wyo. - Mark Collins, 45, of Casper, Wyo., died Feb. 20, 2001, at Wyoming Medical Center of complications from sinus surgery. Mark battled with Crohn's disease for a number of years. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Monday, Feb. 26, 2001, at Memorial Chapel Funeral Home and Crematory. Chaplain Dana Schroeder from Wyoming Medical Center will officiate. Cremation has taken place. Mr. Collins was born Feb. 17, 1956, in Tulsa, Okla., to Pat G. and Billie (Wilson) Collins. He grew up in Winston-Salem and moved to Wyoming in the late 1980s. He received his B.A.S. from Guilford College in Greensboro. In 1994 he received an associate degree in nursing from Casper College and in 1998 he received his degree in wound ostomy and continence specialty nursing at Emory University in Atlanta, Ga. He married Dee Ann Burns on Dec. 31, 1993, in Casper, Wyo. He was an enterostomal therapy nurse at Wyoming Medical Center and has worked there for six years. Mark touched many lives through his work. His hobbies were hot rods and car shows. He and his son restored a 1979 Trans Am. He loved animals, especially dogs, and he loved history. Survivors include his wife, Dee Ann Collins, of Casper, Wyo.; a son, Jason Collins, of Casper, Wyo.; a daughter, Taylor Collins, of the home; parents, Pat and Billie Collins, of Casper, Wyo.; a sister, Lynn Nelson, and her husband of Walkertown. He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents. Memorials may be made to Casper College Foundation, 125 College Drive, Casper, Wyo. 82601 for the Mark Collins Memorial Nursing Scholarship or the Casper Humane Society, 260 Crescent, Casper, Wyo. 82604. Memorial Chapel Funeral Home and Crematory will be in charge of arrangements.

EAGLE

Mr. Billy Benton Eagle Jr., 42, of Winston-Salem passed away Monday, Feb. 19, 2001, at his residence. He was born to Billy Benton Eagle Sr. and Mary Louise Kincade Eagle on May 2, 1958, in Salisbury. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and writing poetry. He attended First Assembly of God Church in Winston-Salem. He is survived by his wife, whom he married Jan. 6, 1997, Ceanzy D. Eagle of the home; four sons, Billy Eagle III of Winston-Salem, Paul Eagle of Salisbury, Stephen Eagle of Salisbury and Timothy Eagle of Statesville; a daughter, Elizabeth Eagle of Statesville; his parents, Billy Benton and Mary Louise Eagle Sr. of Salisbury; two brothers, Larry Dean Eagle of Spencer and Ricky Eagle of Woodleaf and a stepson, Jamie Key, of Winston-Salem; numerous friends and other relatives also survive him. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, at Vogler and Sons Reynolda Road Chapel. The Rev. James Baker will officiate. Interment will follow at Macedonia Baptist Church cemetery in East Bend. The family will receive friends before the service from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Red Cross, Northwest North Carolina Chapter, 690 Coliseum Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27106-5395.

JONES

MOCKSVILLE - Mr. Lewis Edward Jones, 71, of U.S. 601N. died Thursday at his home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in Bear Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Cecil Wetherholt and the Rev. Richard Eskew officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will be at Eaton Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. They request memorials be considered for the Building Fund of Bear Creek Baptist Church, c/o Jerry Hanes, 268 Bear Creek Church Road, Mocksville, NC 27028. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the services Saturday. Mr. Jones was born in Davie County, July 27, 1929, to the late Paul and Annie Draughn Jones and was retired with over 10 years of service with J.P. Green Milling Co. He was formerly the owner and operator of Jones Sawmilling and was also the former chief deputy of the Davie County Sheriff's Office. He had also been a driver with the N.C. Department of Transportation. He was an avid fan of Davie County High School sports. He was a charter member of the North Davie Ruritan and a charter member of the William R. Davie Fire Department. Mr. Jones was a graduate of Davie County High School Class of 1947. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren in sports activities. He was a member of Bear Creek Baptist Church where he served on the church board of trustees and the pastor selection committee. He was preceded in death by a brother, Harold Jones. Surviving are his wife, Estie Miller Jones, of Kernersville; a son and daughter-in-law, Ed Jones and wife, Ginny, of Eden; two daughters and sons-in-law, Leigh Jones Yarbrough and husband, Eric, of Kernersville and Lynn J. Lane and husband, Bob, of Sparta; six grandchildren, Meredith and Rebecca Jones, Adam Lane, Heather Parson and husband, Ronnie,, John Eric and Courtney Yarbrough; three sisters, Mrs. L.S. (Irma Jean) Shelton of Mocksville, Mrs. Harold (Shirley) Rollins of Mocksville and Mrs. Betty Cates of Houston, Texas and two brothers, Bobby Jones and wife, Pansy of Mocksville and Gerald Jones and wife, Brenda of Stockbridge, Ga.

LAURENCE

First child of Frank Boggan and Pauline McDaniel Cash, Julia Cash Laurence, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2001. Loving mother, homemaker, accomplished pianist, she was widowed from Fred Siewers Laurence Jr., to whom she was married 55 years. Julia was a graduate of R.J. Reynolds' Class of 1933 and served on their reunion committee. She also attended Salem College. She and her family had resided in Augusta, Ga., where they were members of Trinity-on-the-Hill Methodist Church. While in Augusta, she served as president of the Kingston Garden Club, before returning to her home in Winston-Salem in 1969. Julia also thoroughly enjoyed her friends in "The Bridge Club" which had been in existence since 1932. She is survived by two daughters and three sons, Fred S. (Pete) Laurence III, of Jacksonville, Fla., Frank C. Laurence of Victoria, Texas, Harriet N. Laurence of Highlands, Louis E. Laurence of Augusta, Ga., and Julie L. Wilson of Winston-Salem; and a brother, Paul Spencer Cash of Morganton. She also has five grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Elizabeth and Tab Williams Adult Day Center, 231 Melrose Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, by the Rev. Arnett Harris at Vogler's Clemmons Chapel. A graveside service will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. at the Forest Hills cemetery in Morganton. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Vogler's Clemmons Chapel.

MCDANIEL

Mrs. Edna Mae Bowen McDaniel, 90, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2001, at Meadowbrook of Davie. Mrs. McDaniel was born July 23, 1910, near Dothan, Ala. She was a member of Camp Hill Baptist Church in Camp Hill, Ala. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Louis McDaniel and a daughter, Barbara McDaniel Copous. Surviving are two daughters, Bebe McDaniel of Winston-Salem and Louise (Jim) Traylor of Atlanta, Ga., and a son, William Carson (Helen) McDaniel of Brush, Colo.; 12 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren and 17 great-great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 9 to 11 a.m. at Langley Funeral Home in Camp Hill, Ala. A graveside service will follow at noon Saturday at Camp Hill cemetery. The family asks that donations, in lieu of flowers be made to Hospice & Palliative Care of Winston-Salem, 1100 S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. Vogler Funeral Home is serving the family locally.

REDMOND

Mr. James Oliver Redmond, 84, of Kelsey Drive, Walkertown died Feb. 22, 2001, at Oak Summit Nursing Center. He was born in Buncombe County on June 21, 1916, to Oliver and Hattie Rice Redmond. Mr. Redmond was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Elzia Case Redmond; a son, Kenneth, on Jan. 13, 1999; two brothers, William and Charles. Surviving are; a daughter, Shirley Dixon and her husband Richard of Winston-Salem; four sons, David and his wife Brenda of Clemmons, Rodney and his wife Kathy of Orlando, Fla., Stanley and his wife Shelby of Lewisville and Michael and his wife Susan of King; a daughter-in-law, Evelyn Redmond of Rural Hall; 19 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; two sisters, Sarah Pinner and her husband Tom of Arden and Gladys Branks; a brother, Glenn and his wife Barbara. A funeral service will be 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. Ken Barnett officiating. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

ROLAND

Mr. J. Max Roland, 70, of Winston-Salem, died Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born June 2, 1930, in Yancey County to Henry Grayson and Pearl Evans Roland. Mr. Roland served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, a member of Salem Masonic Lodge No. 298 and had retired from the Veterans Administration Out-patient Clinic in Winston-Salem. Surviving are his wife, Louise Walsh Roland of the home; one brother, Calvin Roland and wife Arlene of Bridgeton, N.J.; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel by Dr. Ray Hamilton. Burial will be in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home. Flowers will be accepted and memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church Building Fund, 5000 Country Club Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27104.

SHAW

ASHEBORO - James E. Shaw Sr., 83, of 1026 S. Cox St., Asheboro, died Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, at Randolph Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, at Pugh Funeral Home by the Rev. Jean Nall. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park. Mr. Shaw was a native of Randolph County and retired from the U.S. Postal Service. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of Grace United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, Helen McKay Shaw; a daughter, Linda Shaw of Asheboro; a son, James "Jim" E. Jr. and Sherry S. Shaw of State Road; a grandson, John G. Shaw of Fort Sill, Okla.; a granddaughter, Lisa Fields of Burlington; a great-grand-daughter, Elizabeth Fields of Burlington; a sister, Ruby Martin; and two brothers, Worth O. Shaw and Clyde T. Shaw, all of Asheboro. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, at the Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro. Memorials may be made to Grace United Methodist Church, 819 Woodcrest Drive, Asheboro, NC 27203.

ELKIN - Mrs. Susie Barker Spann, 88, of Lyles Street passed away Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. Due to the inclement weather Thursday, the funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, at the Gentry Family Chapel in Jonesville by Tom Nussegaum and Slate Blend. Burial will be in the Charity United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday before the service at Gentry Family Funeral Service on Little Mountain Road in Jonesville.

VAUGHN

Mr. Timothy "Timmy" Kevin Vaughn, 44, of Townsend Ridge Drive died unexpectedly Feb. 20, 2001, at St. Claire Hospital in Dover, N.J. He was born Nov. 7, 1956, in Forsyth County to William "Bill" Vaughn and Mozelle McGee Vaughn. Timmy was a 1975 graduate of Parkland High School. He loved to ride his Harley-Davidson motorcycle and was a longtime member of the HOG Chapter. He was employed with the U.S. Postal Service for 20 years. He then pursued his dream of owning and operating his own business with his wife. They successfully started STV Enterprises and they were presently operating it. He was preceded in death by his mother Mozelle McGee Vaughn Johnson. Surviving are his wife, Shawna Mae James Vaughn of the home, father and stepmother Bill and Betty Vaughn of Kernersville, stepson, Jamie Shamel and wife Annie of King, a special granddaughter Katy Shamel, whom he loved very much, three brothers Floyd Vaughn of Winston-Salem, Dennis Vaughn of Dallas, N.C., Doug Vaughn and wife Karen of Kernersville, stepbrother, Ray Shelton and wife Cindy of Kernersville, stepsister, Belinda Bodenheimer and husband Bob of Winston-Salem, mother-in-law, Betty James of King and sister-in-law, Barbara Edwards and husband Dallas of King, several nieces and nephews and special friends who will miss him very much. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday Feb. 24, 2001 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Brother Don Collins and Mr. Dallas Edwards will officiate. Burial will follow in Crestview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Mr. Thurmond Ray Waiters, 51, of 1053 Mill Creek Court, East Bend, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001, at his residence. He was a native of Kernersville, born Oct. 14, 1949, to Louise B. Waiters and the late Walter A. Waiters. He was of the Holiness faith, attending the Righteous Church of God in Midway. He was a graduate of East Forsyth High School, was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was employed with the Sara Lee Hosiery Division. He was preceded in passing by a sister, Velva J. Lindsay, and a nephew, Timon Lindsay. He leaves to cherish his loving memory, a devoted wife, Kara Gillespie Waiters; a daughter, Raikole Waiters, and a stepson, Walter Gillespie (Tameka); three grandchildren; his mother, Louise B. Waiters; two sisters, Claudette L. Waiters, all of Winston-Salem, Faye Samuels of Kernersville; four brothers, James A. Waiters (Herlandes) of Fredrick, Md., Walter A. Waiters Jr. of Radcliff, Ky., Kerry B. Waiters (Rose) of High Point and Clayton K. Waiters of Winston-Salem; four sisters-in-law, Mary Goldsmith of Virginia Beach, Va., Deloris Boyce (John), Kimberly Ward (Derrick), Michelle Boller (Jeff), all of Statesville; two brothers-in-law, Charles Gillespie (Diane) of Statesville and Jerry Gillespie of Dayton, Ohio; a host of nieces, nephews, other family members and friends. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, from the chapel of Russell Funeral Home with the Rev. Clyde Lindsay officiating. Interment will be in the Evergreen cemetery. MOCKSVILLE - Mr. Hayden W. Anderson, 79, of Richie Road passed away Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, at his residence. Mr. Anderson was born March 17, 1921, in Davie County to the late William F. and Jessie Walker Anderson. He was preceded in death by his wife of 28 years, Barbara S. Anderson. He was a member of Church of Christ at North Main. Survivors include four sons, Arnold Anderson and wife Anna of Mocksville, Doug Anderson and wife Brenda of Kernersville, Alan Anderson and wife Amy of Mocksville and Randy Anderson of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Judy A. Brinkley of Welcome; a stepson, Patrick Austin and wife Michelle of Mocksville; a stepdaughter, Renee Potts and husband Steve of Mocksville; 18 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Wayne Anderson of Winston-Salem, Jim Anderson of Kissimmee, Fla., and Bruce Anderson of Mocksville; and three sisters, Wilma Danner of Mocksville, Joyce Goodman of Winston-Salem and Margaret Boger of Mocksville. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 26, 2001, at the Church of Christ at North Main with Minister Greg Elrod officiating. Burial will follow at Jericho Church of Christ. The family will receive friends from 7:30 to 9 Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001, at Davie Funeral Service Chapel. Davie Funeral Service LLC, 416 Valley Road, Mocksville, NC 27028 will be serving the Anderson family.

ARRINGTON

GREENSBORO - William Clayton "Duck" Arrington, 77, of 3113 Liberty Road died Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, at the Moses H. Cone Hospital. The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Lynn Cash at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Hanes-Lineberry N. Elm Street Chapel. Burial will be in Gilmore Memorial Park in Julian. A native of Surry County, Mr. Arrington was the founder and owner of Acme Florist Supply in Greensboro. After 54 years in the floral industry, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the North Carolina State Florist Association in 1998 and was a lifetime member of the North Carolina Florist Association. Mr. Arrington was also a World War II Air Force veteran and a member of the Julian United Methodist Church. Mr. Arrington was the son of the late H. L. and Bessie Hyatt Arrington. Surviving are his wife, Pauline "Polly" Arrington; son Richard C. "Rick" and daughter-in-law Margaret Clark Arrington of Greensboro; brothers James Arrington of Westfield and Bobby Arrington of Randleman; sisters Wilma Thompson of Burlington, Rena Reynolds, Mary Smith of Greensboro and Gladys Arrington of Tecumseh, Okla.; and granddaughters Dana Lynn Arrington and Shelley Lee Arrington of Greensboro. He was a loving husband, the greatest of fathers, a giving grandfather, the dearest of friends and a devoted businessman to his profession. He will be greatly missed by all whose life he touched. The family would like to express their gratitude to everyone at Heritage Greens, Guilford Health Care Center and the 3rd Floor at the Moses Cone Hospital, with a very special "Thank you" to the Hospice Unit. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Hanes-Lineberry N. Elm Street Chapel.
