AYERS

STUART, Va. - Mr. J. Carl Ayers, 84, of 810 Ayers Orchard Road, Stuart, died Saturday at N.C. Baptist Hospital. Mr. Ayers was the owner/operator of Ayers Orchard in Stuart. He served in World War II with the U.S. Army. He attended Northview and Community Primitive Baptist Churches. He was born in Patrick County to the late Samuel Ayers and the late Sallie Glass Ayers. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Marjory Williams Ayers. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Mark (Betty) Pendleton of Lawsonville and Mrs. David (Linda) Seiberling of Cameron; one son and daughter-in-law, John C. and Carolyn Ayers of Stuart; five grandchildren, Ellis Seiberling, Chris Ayers, Scott Clifton, Jason Pendleton and Rachel Ann Pendleton; and two sisters, Mrs. Elois (Mary) Mitchell of Lebanon, Tenn., and Mrs. Elmore (Mattie Ruth) Cross of Bluff City, Tenn. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 26, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Stuart with Elder Milton Gunter officiating. Burial will follow in the Peters Creek Baptist Church cemetery with military rites by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the home of J. Carl Ayers, 810 Ayers Orchard Road, Stuart. BLACKBURN

Mr. Thomas Gary "Stumpy" Blackburn Jr., 43, died suddenly Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, from natural causes. He was born in Forsyth County Feb. 26, 1957, to Thomas Gary and Peggy Snow Blackburn. Mr. Blackburn was a graduate of Parkland High School, a retired employee of R.J. Reynolds and a current employee of Circle Industries in Georgia. He was preceded in death by his father Tom and is survived by his mother Peggy; one daughter, Tiffany Justin Harvell and husband Donald; one son, Thomas Joshua Blackburn; two sisters, Vickie L. Blackburn and Cynthia Michelle Blackburn; two brothers, James Sherman Blackburn and wife Leigh Anne and Michael Todd Blackburn, all of Winston-Salem; a special granddaughter, Kailey Elizabeth Harvell; one niece, Camren; three nephews, Jamie, Zack and Stevie; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and many special friends and co-workers. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel by the Rev. John Brown. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. BROWN

Lena Burke Brown, 96, of Clemmons died Saturday Feb. 24, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was a member of Vaughn Memorial Presbyterian Church, former church pianist, lifetime member of Presbyterian Women of the Church and a retired nursing assistant at Womack Army Community Hospital. Survivors are one son, George Brown of Fayetteville; four daughters, Lydia Washington of Alexandria, Va., Lois Shirley of Manassas, Va., Kathryn Brown of Fayetteville and Betty Sue Stansbury of Clemmons; one brother, William M. Brown of Winston-Salem; one sister, Mildred Bean of Fayetteville; 12 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 27, at Jernigan-Warren Chapel conducted by the Rev. Dr. Milton Little. Burial will be at Galatia Presbyterian Church cemetery. Visitation will be 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, March 26 at Jernigan-Warren. Memorials may be made to Vaughn Memorial Presbyterian Church, 2701 Ft. Bragg Road, Fayetteville, NC 28303.

CREWS

HIGH POINT - Mrs. Frances Marie Gravely Crews, 76, of 425 Seminole Court died Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, in High Point Regional Hospital. She was born March 24, 1924, in Roanoke, Va., daughter of the late Benjamin Moton Gravely and Fannie Minter Gravely. She was a registered nurse, having graduated from City Hospital in Winston-Salem, and a member of Waughtown Baptist Church in Winston-Salem. She was married Jan. 24, 1947, to Francis Hylton (Frank) Crews, who survives, of the home. Also surviving are one son, David Eugene (Gene) Crews and his wife Doris of Clayton; one daughter, Ms. Sharon Marie Crews of San Diego, Calif.; sister-in-law Mrs. Millicent C. Stephenson of Winston-Salem; nephew Larry Wayne Stephenson of Winston-Salem; and four grandchildren, Jennifer Marie Hulse and her husband Andrew, Catherine Paige Boose, Heather Leigh Crews and David Matthew Crews. Mrs. Crews was preceded in death by her sister Gladys Gravely Rieves and her brother Benjamin M. Gravely Jr. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday in J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home Chapel, 10301 North NC Hwy 109, Wallburg, with the Rev. Jack Rose officiating. The interment will be in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens in Winston-Salem. The family will be at the funeral home 7 to 9 p.m. Monday and other times at the home, 425 Seminole Court. Memorials may be directed to Heart Stride of High Point, 601 N. EATON

Miss Bessie Lee Eaton, 76, formerly of Winston-Salem, died Feb. 23, 2001, in Meadowbrook Terrace of Davie. She was a native of Davie County, daughter of the late William H. and Elnora Foote Eaton. She is survived by one daughter, Denice (Samuel) Davis of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, Napoleon DeShawn and Theresa E. Davis; two great-grandchildren, Shakara and Quantez Johnson; two brothers, Henry Eaton of Albemarle and Odell Eaton of Mocksville; and three sisters, Willie M. Wiseman of Rahway, N.J., Queen McKnight of Winston-Salem and Betty Jean Eaton of Mocksville. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Cedar Creek Missionary Baptist Church. The Rev. Allen Transou Jr. will officiate and burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family visitation will be at 1:30 p.m. (Graham)

HARPER

Mr. Bobby Harper, 67, of 3005 Rochester St. passed away Monday, Feb. 19, 2001, at the Forsyth Medical Center after a brief illness. He was born June 18, 1933, to Floyd J. Harper and Louise Harper. He was a native of Winston-Salem, graduating from Atkins High School, class of 1951. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a former member of the U.S. Post #220. He was a previous employee of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company and retired from the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System after 30 years of service. Mr. Harper also owned and operated Harper's Confectionary Store on the corner of 18th Street and Cleveland Avenue for more than 15 years. Mr. Harper was a member of the Mount Zion Baptist Church. He is survived by his devoted wife of 24 years, Eva Little Harper; stepmother Mary M. Harper of Winston-Salem; two daughters, Tammy Louise Harper and Frances Marshall of Winston-Salem; two sons, Bobby Ray Harper Jr. of Omaha, Neb., and Willis Hurbert Marshall of Frankfurt, Germany; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; four sisters, Margie Macon, Junnell Lyons, Floydette Rector (Phillip) of Winston-Salem and Margaret Chapman of Laurelton, N.Y.; one aunt, Eva Mae Barrett of Winston-Salem; two brothers-in-law, Bryant Little of Winston-Salem and Charles (Elmira) Little of New York, N.Y.; 16 nieces and nephews; and devoted friend Jimmy Paulings. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 27, at the Mount Zion Baptist Church with Dr. Serenus T. Churn Sr. officiating. Interment will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28, in the Salisbury National cemetery. The family visitation will be 2:30 to 3 p.m. Tuesday at the church. (Russell)

HARTER

MAYODAN - Alice Pauline Tilley Harter, 69, formerly of Mt. Villa in Mayodan, died Feb. 24, 2001, after a lengthy illness in Blaine, Tenn., where she had resided with her daughter for the past five months. Her funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 27, at Friends Baptist Church with the Rev. Ralph Mitchell and the Rev. Carl Brown officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mrs. Harter was born May 16, 1931, in Stokes County. She was a textile worker and devoted mother and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her parents William and Lily Bullins. She is survived by her daughter Nelda Merritt and husband Mike of Tennessee; son Junior Ray Tilley and wife Debbie of Mayodan; three grandchildren, Angie Riggs of Mount Airy, and Chadwick and Jr. Tilley of Zebulon; four great-grandchildren, David Riggs of Mount Airy, and Nathanial, Chase and Zoe Tilley of Zebulon; two brothers, W.A. Bullins and Ernest Bullins of Stokesdale; and one sister, Louise Tilley of Bassett, Va. The family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Feb. 26, 2001, at Ray Funeral Home in Madison and all other times at the home of W.A. and Becky Bullins of 508 West Washington St. in Mayodan.

HULL

Mrs. Ethel Gough Hull, 84, died at Forsyth Medical Center following a period of declining health. A native of Yadkin County, she was born April 15, 1916, to the late Charlie Anderson and Minnie James Gough. Mrs. Hull was retired from Forsyth Medical Center as a Nurse's Aid, and attended Mineral Springs Baptist Church. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by one son, Rondell L. Cheek, in 1968, five sisters and five brothers. Surviving is her husband of 59 years Foy Gilmer Hull of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Peggy S. Benson and husband Gordon of Plano, Texas, and Betty Lou Davis and husband Cleve of King; one son and daughter-in-law, Talmadge "Tam" Cheek and wife Julia of Winston-Salem; one brother, Cletus Gough and wife Geraldine of Winston-Salem; and six grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A graveside committal service will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Crestview Memorial Park (Rural Hall). Dr. Cecil Cave will officiate. The family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m. today at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home, Rural Hall Chapel.

JOHNSON

Prince Henry Johnson Jr. of the Silas Creek Manor Nursing Facility passed on Thursday morning, Feb. 22, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home following a period of illness. He was a native of Anderson, S.C., and had resided in New York for most of his life. Mr. Johnson was a graduate of Atkins High School and a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps. Graveside services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 27, from the Evergreen cemetery with the Rev. Rhodford L. Anderson officiating. Survivors include one sister, Ann Johnson; one brother, William Johnson, both of the city; one aunt, Eva Martin of the city; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. (Hooper)

KELLY

RICHMOND, Va. - L. William Kelly Jr. died late Feb. 22, 2001, in Richmond, Va., after a courageous battle with multiple myeloma. He was born Feb. 7, 1940, in Greensboro. He graduated from Marion High School. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia, Phi Beta Kappa, in 1962 and his medical degree from the University's School of Medicine in 1966. He entered the U.S. Army assigned as a house staff officer to Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in Denver, Colo., and subsequently qualified for the 82nd Airborne Division stationed at Fort Bragg. He served as a battalion surgeon in Vietnam with the 1st of the 508, Third Brigade of the 82nd Airborne Division. After his tour of service he returned to Charlottesville, Va., where he completed his dermatology residency at the University of Virginia Hospital in 1971. Later that year he joined what was to become Dermatology Associates of Virginia and was a practicing physician until his retirement in June 2000. He was an attending physician at Chippenham, Johnston-Willis, St. Mary's, Henrico Doctors, John Randolph and Richmond Memorial Hospitals, and Southside Medical Center. He was a past president of both the Manchester Medical Society and the Virginia Dermatological Society, and was the secretary of the Richmond Dermatological Society. He was a member of the Richmond Dermatological Society, the Virginia Dermatological Society, the American Academy of Dermatology, the Masters of Dermatology, Richmond Academy of Medicine, Medical Society of Virginia and the AMA. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the Country Club of Virginia and the Virginia Chapter of the 82nd Airborne Association. He was an avid golfer and outdoorsman. He was predeceased by his son Robert Ellis Kelly and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard William Kelly Sr. In addition to his wife of 39 years, Julia Ellis Kelly, he is survived by his sons L. William Kelly III, his wife, Katherine, and grandson Harper Lee Kelly and Timothy Porter Kelly, who lives at Good Neighbor Village, all of Richmond; his daughter, Elizabeth Kelly Baicy, her husband, John, and grandson Joseph William Baicy of Winston-Salem; his brother, Robert Martin Kelly and his wife, Barbara, of High Point; his mother-in-law Frances Stephens Ellis of Westminster Canterbury, Richmond; his sister-in-law Cynthia Ellis Young and her husband, Walter K., of Doylestown, Pa.; his niece Cristie Good of Bethesda, Md.; and nephews Michael Kelly of High Point, and Stuart Young and Lane Young of Doylestown, Pa. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in Dr. Kelly's name to the Cawley Fund of the UVA Department of Dermatology in care of the Medical Alumni Association, Box 800776, Charlottesville, VA 22908, or to Good Neighbor Village Inc., Box 17782, Richmond, VA 23226. The family will receive friends 2 to 4 p.m. and 6to 8 p.m. Monday at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Avenue, Richmond. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church, Cary Street Road, Richmond. Burial will follow at Hollywood cemetery.

LAMBETH

Mr. Kenneth "Ken" Brooks Lambeth, 47, of 1134 Edgebrook Drive died in the woods near his home. He was born July 24, 1953, in Guilford County to Joel Floyd Lambeth and Beatrice Brooks Lambeth. He was formerly a homebuilder and for the past year had been employed with FedEx. He was assistant scoutmaster with Troop 911 at Burkhead United Methodist Church and was a past officer with the North Carolina Wild Foods Association. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved nature. He is survived by his wife, Marty Summey Lambeth of the home; two sons, Evan Brooks Lambeth and Parker Davis Lambeth, both of the home; two sisters, Jo Lynn Foster of Trinity and Carol Pfaff of Winston-Salem; one brother, David Lambeth of Winston-Salem; three nieces; and three nephews. A memorial graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at Floral Garden Park cemetery in High Point by the Rev. Douglas C. Rights. The family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel and requests that memorials be made to North Carolina Strike Force-1, Attn: Richard Washa-baugh, Treas., c/o Forsyth County Rescue Squad, 1499 Old Salisbury Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27127, or to the Old Hickory Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

LEWIS

GREENSBORO - Mr. John D. Lewis Jr., 80, died Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, at Bradford Village West. He was born in Stokes County to the late John D. Lewis Sr. and Emma Mabe Lewis. He was raised near Dan River in Stokes County and enjoyed the time he spent there and reflecting on those years later in life. He retired from Exxon with 30 years service and from Chemical Leaman Company with 12 years service as a truck driver. He was proud of driving over 40 years with an excellent safety record. He was of the Primitive Baptist faith. He was an avid fisherman, hunter and gardener of vegetables and flowers. Preceding him in death was his daughter Linda Lewis. Surviving are his wife Louise M. Joyce Lewis of Greensboro; six children, Joyce M. Morris of Greensboro, Hilda Andrews of New Bern, Peggy Levens of Whittsett, Deloris May of East Bend, Jackie Willard of Oak Ridge and John Dwight Lewis of Colfax; four sisters, Nannie Ola Nelson of Madison, Louella Williams of Walnut Cove, Emma Jean Owens of Calabash and Barbara Ann Evans of Whittsett; two brothers, Charles Lewis of Kernersville and William Lewis of High Point; 12 grandchildren; and 21 great grandchildren. A 1 p.m. funeral service will be held Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2001, at Burroughs Funeral Home with burial following in Clear Springs Primitive Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m. this evening at the funeral home and other times at their own homes. REID

Mr. Odell Coolidge Reid, 76, died Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, at Wilkes Regional Medical Center. He was born in Stokes County to the late Henry H. and Lilla A. Priddy Reid. He was formerly of Winston-Salem before moving to Lenoir in 1987. He was a World War II Marine veteran, an NRA lifetime member, a precinct captain of the Republican Party and an avid hunter, fisherman and farmer. Mr. Reid was a member of Gospel Light Baptist Church while in the area and currently was a member of Ambassador Baptist Church. He retired in 1980 with over 30 years service as a rural letter carrier with the U.S. Postal Service. Preceding him in death were his wife, Clara B. Reid, in 1997 and one sister, Lois Martin. Surviving are one daughter, Carol Rose of Apex; one son, Lester O. Reid of Kings Creek; a special niece, Dora Barber of King; two brothers, Perry H. Reid of Kernersville and Hassell Reid of Newland; two grandsons, Jonathan O. Rose and Christopher S. Rose, both of Apex; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; and many special friends and neighbors. A 3 p.m. funeral service will be held Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2001, at Gospel Light Baptist Church, Walkertown with burial following in Gardens of Memory. The Rev. Robert Setzer and the Rev. Frank Shumate will officiate. The family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m. this evening at Burroughs Funeral Home, Walnut Cove. SCOTT

HOUSTON, Texas - Mrs. Jacqueline Denise Sloop Scott, 65, passed on to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, in Houston, Texas. Mrs. Scott was born in Elkin on May 23, 1935. She lived in North Carolina most of her life. She worked for the N.C. Department of Social Services for 37 years. Her husband was the late Harold Dennis Scott. She is survived by her son, John G. Scott of Annapolis, Md.; and her two beloved grandchildren, Megan J. Scott and Johnny G. Scott. A memorial service for Mrs. Scott will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28, at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Chapel. Dr. Jerry Murray and the Rev. Brian Rainbow will officiate.

SHEARIN

Mrs. Elizabeth Minor Nelson Shearin, 96, of Baptist Retirement Homes, Winton-Salem, formerly of Macon, Warren County, and Saint Petersburg, Fla., died at the home Sunday Feb. 25, 2001, on her 96th birthday. She was born Feb. 25, 1905, in Emory Gap, Tenn., to the Rev. Edward Rosser Nelson and Ellen Jackson Scott Nelson, their seventh child. She was reared in Henderson and attended public school there. On Sept. 8, 1923, she married Jasper Walton Shearin of Warren County who predeceased her in 1965. Soon after her husband's death, she left the ancestral Shearin home of Diamond Grove Plantation in Warren County and made a new home and a new life in a retirement community in Saint Petersburg where she resided until 1990, when, at age 85, she came to the retirement community of Brookridge in Winston-Salem. She is survived by three daughters and three sons: Elizabeth Page S. Bladen of Vienna, Va., Anne S. Ross of Warren County, Ellen S. Bartlett of Arlington, Va., Jasper W. (Jack) Shearin Jr. of Winston-Salem, Dr. Edward Nelson Shearin of Ellicott City, Md., and Dr. Guillaume Shearin of Redwood City, Calif. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28, at Gardner's Baptist Church, Macon, by the Rev. Tom Caverly, pastor. Mrs. Shearin's great-grandsons will serve as pallbearers and her grandsons as honorary pallbearers. The family will greet friends 12:30 to 2 p.m. at the church on the day of the funeral. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 27, at Brookridge Retirement Home by Dr. Charles Edwards, Pastor of College Park Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Gardner's Baptist Church, Route 1, Macon, NC 27551. The family wishes to express their thanks to the nursing staff of the 6th and 7th floors of Brookridge for their loving and tender care given to our mother during the nearly three years she resided in the health care unit of Brookridge. Arrangements are by Blaylock Funeral Home.

TAYLOR

WALNUT COVE - Mr. Howard Monroe "Red" Taylor, 77, died Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born in Stokes County to Ressie Ann Taylor Howell. He was of the Baptist faith, a World War II Army veteran, a lifetime member of Walktertown VFW Post No. 10471 and a machine operator at R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. for 33 years and four months. He loved his family, the beach and farming. Preceding him in death in addition to his mother were his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Franklin Taylor, foster parents, Mr. and Mrs. "Ab" Reid, and his parents-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Rufus Mabe. Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Thelma Mabe Taylor of the home; three children, Geraldine T. Venable and Howard F. "B C" Taylor (Lynn) of Walnut Cove and Shirley T. Pugh (Dean) of Walkertown; five grandchildren, Penny V. Brown, Jennifer Taylor, Michelle Taylor, Lisa Taylor and Molly Torres; four great-grandchildren, Kelli Brown, Andrew Esquivel, Paul and Sammy Torres; his dog, Precious; and a host of friends and neighbors. A 2:30 p.m. funeral service will be held Monday, Feb. 26, at Clear Springs Primitive Baptist Church with burial following in the church cemetery. Elder William Dodson and the Rev.
