NORDEN

Ingeborg Corbach Norden, of 5080 Northgate Drive, Winston-Salem, where she lived with her daughter, Inga Kear., died Sunday morning, Feb. 25, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born Sept. 19, 1928, in Bremen, Germany to Karl and Agathe Corbach. She lived in Winston-Salem for approximately 50 years. After 35 years service, she retired from Western Electric/AT&T, Reynolda Road facility, as a technical writer. She is also survived by a daughter, Linda Craney of Southern Shores; a grandson, Stefan Kear of Winston-Salem; and a great-granddaughter, Katie Kear of Winston-Salem. A private memorial service will be held at Parklawn Memorial Gardens. All of us who knew her as Mom, Ome or Inge will miss her profoundly.

PARDUE

ARLINGTON - Mrs. Cletia Nicks Pardue, 87, of Vestal Ave. passed away Monday March 5, 2001, at the Kate B. Smith Hospice Home. Funeral services are incomplete at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin.

PLITT

Mr. Joseph Plitt, 92, formerly of 631 Arbor Road died Monday, March 5, 2001,at Arbor Acres. Mr. Plitt was born in Baltimore, Md. July 8, 1908, to Joseph Augustus and Anna K. Plitt. A member of First Christian Church, Mr. Plitt was a deacon, the president of his Sunday school class and was active in the church youth program. He was a manufacturer's representative for various furniture companies for 60 years, retiring in 1983. Mr. Plitt was the husband of the late Fern Williams Plitt who died on March 6, 1988. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Madeline Egner of Baltimore, Md. He is survived by two sons, Joseph Ben Plitt and wife Bonnie of Clemmons and Charles W. Plitt and wife Martha Jo of Winston-Salem; four grandsons, Joseph Jr., Edward, Will and David Plitt; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church with the Rev. James Cobb officiating. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends before the service from 1 to 2 p.m. in the church parlor. Memorials may be made to First Christian Church, 2320 Country Club Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27104.

POPLIN

ASHEBORO - Myrtle Ruth Roberts Poplin, 81, formerly of Greensboro died March 4, 2001, at the Carolina House in Asheboro. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Lambeth-Troxler Chapel conducted by the Rev. Jim Cates. Burial will be in Westminster Gardens. She was a native of Rockingham County born July 10, 1919, to Shield Smith Roberts and Mary Bennett Roberts. She was a lifetime member of Tabernacle Baptist Church and belonged to Super Sixties. She will be dearly missed by her friends and family. Mrs. Poplin was preceded in death by her husband, Carl H. Poplin Sr. Surviving are two sons, Ronnie and wife Carol Poplin of Hamlet and Carl and wife Jeannie Poplin Jr. of Columbia, S.C.; two sisters, Helen Johnson of Greensboro and Polly and husband Harold Scheidegger of Kenilworth, N.J.; two brothers, Roger and wife Ruby Roberts and Leonard and wife Christine Roberts all of Greensboro; grandchildren Brian Poplin of Harmony, Michael Poplin of Fairbanks, Alaska, Kenneth Poplin of Winston-Salem, Carla and husband Gary Marshall and Alissa and husband Tony Stillinger all of Greensboro; and four grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Lambeth-Troxler Funeral Service and other times at the home of Marjorie Parker, 1617 N. Holden Road. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 3420 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC 28215.

SEARS

ROCKINGHAM - Louise Clack Sears, 79, of 115 Madison Ave. died Sunday, March 4, 2001, at Carolinas Medical Center. She was born April 15, 1921, in Richmond County a daughter of the late Mary Ruth Stubbs Clack and George Frank Clack. Mrs. Sears was a member of Heritage Baptist Church and retired from Aleo Mill. Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 7, 2001, at Heritage Baptist Church with the Rev. Jerry Turner and the Rev. Jim Willingham officiating. Burial will follow in Richmond Memorial Park. Surviving are four daughters, Shirley Snipes of Lexington, Carolyn Porter and husband Steve of Statesville, Pat Freeman and husband Owen of Hamlet and Linda Sears of the home; six grandchildren, Cindy Braddock, Sandy Lusk, Steven Porter, Tricia Wilson, Tressa Hogan and Jamie Freeman; seven great-grandchildren, Hannah Braddock, Grayson Braddock, Kody Lusk, Scott Lusk, Sheri Lusk, Jennifer Lusk and Jonathon Porter; and a sister, Mary Beatrice Veach of Rockingham. Mrs. Sears was preceded in death by three brothers, Lonnie Clack, Richard Clack and Richard Clack. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Tuesday evening at Watson-King Funeral Home. SMITH

Infant DeShawnte Smith passed away March 2, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Evergreen cemetery. Professional services are implemented by Beasley's Funeral Service.

WAINWRIGHT

Mr. Roy Matthew Wainwright, 91, of Winston-Salem, died Saturday, March 3, 2001, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born Oct. 27, 1909, in Perth Amboy, N.J., to Matthew Benjamin and Kristina Peterson Wainwright. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Harry Ludwig Wainwright. Mr. Wainwright started work with United Airlines in 1932 in Newark, N.J. After being transferred to Chicago for a number of years, Mr. Wainwright moved to Denver, Colo., where he raised his family. He continued his education in business at UCLA and Northwestern and retired from United Airlines as a senior executive in 1972 after 40 years of service. Mr. Wainwright and his wife moved from Chicago to Winston-Salem in 1973 to pursue his hobbies of gardening, golf and more travel. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church. Mr. Wainwright is survived by his wife, Virginia Davis Wainwright; his son, Dr. Robert B. Wainwright and wife Enid of E. Dummeston, Vt.; his daughter, Carol Wainwright Huggin and husband Larry of Bellevue, Wash.; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Forsyth Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel, conducted by Dr. Jeff White, with burial at the Forsyth Memorial Park. There will be no public visitation. In lieu of flowers his family requests memorials be made to Hospice of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Inc., 1100-C South Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103-3217, or to First Presbyterian Church, 300 N. Cherry St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101. Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel is serving the Wainwright family.

WELBORN

GREENSBORO - Mr. Otho James "O.J." Welborn, 79, died March 5, 2001, at Britthaven of Guilford in Greensboro. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Lambeth-Troxler Funeral & Cremation Service Chapel conducted by the Rev. Michael Barrett. Burial will follow in Westminster Gardens. A native of Guilford County, Mr. Welborn was born Oct. 2, 1922, to the late Doris Wilson Welborn and Dewitt Talmage Welborn. He was a member of Friendly Avenue Baptist Church and also belonged to the Moose Lodge. Mr. Welborn was retired from P. Lorillard Tobacco Co. and enjoyed working on anything with his hands. A veteran of World War II, Mr. Welborn served his country in the U.S. Navy on the USS Chelsea. Mr. Welborn was preceded in death by his wife, Pearl Crabtree Welborn. Surviving are a son, Charles Edward Welborn and wife Gail of Greensboro; a stepdaughter, Mary Francis Lewis and husband Roger of Long Beach; a sister, Doris Frazier of Pleasant Garden; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at Lambeth-Troxler Funeral & Cremation Service.

WILLIAMS

Mr. Joseph Lee Williams, 64, formerly of 801 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Apt. 8-T, in the Sunrise Towers passed away Saturday, March 3, 2001, at the Forsyth Medical Center. He was born June 21, 1936, in Wilmington. He was of the Baptist faith and was a retired employee of the Chrysler Corporation. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He is survived by his very devoted friend, Verlene Jones; extended family members, Jackie Jones, Brenda Jones and David "Buck" Wilson; and many other friends. Funeral services will be noon Wednesday, March 7, 2001, at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dennis Bishop officiating. Interment will be in the Salisbury National cemetery. The family visitation will be from 11:30 to noon Wednesday at the funeral home.

ABSHER

NORTH WILKESBORO - Mrs. Ruby Tuttle Absher, 85, of Sixth Street, the widow of W.O. Absher died Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2001, at her home. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Mountlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel, with Dr. N. Nelson Granade Jr. and the Rev. Allen Layman officiating. En-tombment will be in the Mount-lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum. Mrs. Absher was born in Forsyth County on Oct. 22, 1915, to John Gray and Lueretta Ward Tuttle. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of North Wilkesboro. Mrs. Absher was a graduate of North Wilkesboro High School and of E.J. Forney's Commercial Class of Woman's College in Greensboro. In her early years, she was the secretary for the Wilkes County board of education. Mrs. Absher was a charter member and two-time president of the North Wilkesboro Junior Woman's Club; a member of the Apple Blossom and Garden Path Garden Clubs; a member and registrar of the Rendezvous Mountain chapter of the DAR; a member of the Ex Libris Book Club; a life member of the Friends of Wilkes Library; a and member of Wilkes Regional Medical Center Auxiliary. Mrs. Absher was a professional genealogist. She was a certified genealogical records searcher. She wrote Abstracted N.C. Records of Stokes, Surry and Wilkes Counties, published by Southern Historical Press. She was the editor of the Wilkes County Heritage Book I; one of the charter organizers and a life member of the N.C. Genealogical Society Inc. of Raleigh; and secretary, treasurer and assistant editor of the Wilkes Genealogical Society. She taught genealogical classes through Wilkes Community College in Wilkes, Ashe and Alleghany counties. Mrs. Absher was also a charter member of the Breakfast Club, the JUG Club and Old Wilkes Inc. She is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth "Libby" Brooks of North Wilkesboro; a son, Henry Gray Absher of Dunwoody, Ga.; four grand-children, Beth Hargette and Laura B. Baxley of Charlotte, William Gray Absher of Dunwoody, Ga., and Matthew Niel Brooks of Chapel Hill; three great-grandchildren, Ashley Hargette, Madison Hargette and Brooks Baxley of Charlotte; and special caregivers Melissa Hunt, Ada Sheets, Gail Prevette, Kathy Anderson and Thelma Wright. The family will receive visitors at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. before the service. The family requests no flowers; memorials may be made to the donor's choice.

BARSZ

Mrs. Freida Grych Barsz, 80, died Monday, Feb. 26, 2001, at her home. She was born Feb. 29, 1920, in Mosinee, Wis., to Albert and Mary Grych. Mrs. Barsz was preceded in death by her husband, John Barsz; two sisters, Virginia Jensen and Irene Zalewski; and a brother, Joseph Grych. Surviving are a daughter, Nikki Barsz of Chicago; three sons, Richard (Eleanor) Barsz of Liberty, Les (Debbie) Barsz of Walkertown and Taylor Barsz of Chicago; three grandchildren, Dale Barsz of Greensboro, Bryand Missy Barsz of Walkertown and Taylor Barsz of Chicago; a sister, Phyllis Daum; and a brother, Stanley Grych. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Memorial Funeral Chapel, 5980 Kinney Road. Burial will be at a later date in Wisconsin. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Greensboro, 2500 Summit Ave., Greensboro, NC 27405. The family wishes to thank the Hospice staff for their care and kindness, especially Dionne, Colin and Kelly.

BLACK

Mrs. Ethel Hemphill Black was born Aug. 18,1920, to the late Robert and Louise Hemphill. She departed this life Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mrs. Black was preceded in death by her late husband, Eldridge Raymond Black. Ethel was educated in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County schools. She retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. as a cafeteria manager. Ethel was an avid reader and walker who enjoyed baking for family and friends. As a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church, she was also active in the BTU. Survivors include a sister, Evelean Beck of New York; four brothers, Robert Hemphill, Leonard Hemphill and Ed Hemphill, all of Winston-Salem, and Clevester Hemphill of New York; a devoted nephew and caregiver, Willis Black Jr.; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today from Mount Zion Baptist Church, where Dr. Serenus Churn will officiate. Interment will be in Evergreen cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service from 1:30 to 2 p.m. (Brown's)

BLALOCK

Alice Michael Blalock, 96, was called home to be with her Lord and Savior on Feb. 27, 2001. She was born in Surry County on Aug. 20, 1904. She was a resident of Winston-Salem for most of her life, with the exception of a 20-year period in which she lived in Ormond Beach, Fla. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Raymond Caldwell Blalock, and her only child, Peggy Blalock Renigar. She is survived by her three grandchildren and their families, Pamela Needham and husband Tommy of Walkertown; Scott and Melissa Renigar and their children, Sherry and Christopher, of Winston-Salem, and Michael and Terri Renigar and their children, Meagan and Cole, of Pfafftown. In addition, she has a nephew, Carl Michael of Sun Valley, Calif. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, March 2, 2001, at Salem cemetery by Chaplain Fred Moretz. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Thursday evening at Vogler & Sons Funeral Home on Reynolda Road, Winston-Salem. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care Center, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

BOGER

MOCKSVILLE - Mrs. Ruby Seamon Boger, 75, of Sanford Avenue passed away Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. Mrs. Boger was born March 11, 1925, in Davie County to the late Lewis M. and Ida Adams Seamon. She was preceded in death by a brother, Jack Seamon, and a sister, Estelle Durham. Mrs. Boger was employed with Burlington In-dustries and then retired from Baker Furniture. Mrs. Boger was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Baxter A. Boger Sr.; a son, Baxter A. Boger Jr. and wife Francis of Salisbury; a daughter, Ruby Joan Corum and husband Jerry of Mocksville; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Vestal Beamon and wife Mildred of Rome, Ga.; and a sister, Nellie Murray and husband Max of Winston-Salem. Graveside ser-vices will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 3, 2001, at Rose cemetery in Mocksville, with the Rev. Van Lankford officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 Friday, March 2, 2001, at Davie Funeral Service Chapel. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Davie County, P.O. Box 848, Mocksville, NC 27028. BROWN

Clarence J. Brown passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2001, after an extended period of declining health. Mr. Brown was born in 1913 in Duplin County and grew up in the town of Warsaw. He graduated in 1934 from North Carolina State College with a degree in electrical engineering. The following year he joined the Duke Power Co. in Winston-Salem. After America's entry into World War II, Mr. Brown enlisted in 1942 with the U.S. Navy. He enrolled in an intensive training program in radar theory and maintenance, and for most of the war was assigned to Carrier Aircraft Service Unit Two stationed in Hawaii. After the war, Mr. Brown secured employment with the Western Electric Co. and eventually transferred to its affiliated company, Bell Laboratories. Until he retired in 1975, his career was devoted to the development of radar systems supporting our nation's anti-aircraft and, later, anti-ballistic missile systems. Mr. Brown will be remembered for his lifelong passion for playing the piano. He was also a supporter of libraries and was particularly proud to have been named a director emeritus of the Friends of the Library, Elon College. A resident of Burlington since 1951, he is survived by his devoted wife, Mildred Jones Brown of Burlington; brother Lee Brown and his wife Jean of Warsaw; son Gordon Brown and his wife Claudia of Raleigh; daughter Jane Frost Anderson and her husband Frank of Spartanburg, S.C.; and granddaughter Katie Wall and her children Deborah Jane and Alexandra, all of Spartanburg, S.C. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 2, at the First Presbyterian Church in Burlington. The family will receive friends in Calvin Hall immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to support the Elon University Library in Elon, N.C.

COVELL

John Henry "Jack" Covell, 85, of 750 Lynn Dee Drive in Winston-Salem died at Forsyth Medical Center on Feb. 25, 2001. He was born Feb. 18, 1916, in Worcester, Mass., to the late John Henry Covell Sr. and Catherine Ryder Covell. John graduated from Worcester Polytechnical Institute in 1937 with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. After being employed with Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in Connecticut, he joined Western Electric as a field engineer. He worked with the Army Air Forces on overseas assignments during World War II. In 1954, after five years of Air Force field engineering for Western Electric at Boeing Aircraft Co. in Wichita, Kan., he was transferred to Winston-Salem. John retired from Western Electric in 1978 after 33 years of service. John was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church for 47 years, a member of the Masonic Pioneer Lodge No. 685 and a member of the Walter C. Kearns Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Yvette D. Covell; two daughters, Sara A. Covell of the home and Laurie C. Phillips and husband Marvin W. Phillips Jr.; and two grand-children, Melissa P. Black and husband Jayme Black and M.W. "Trip" Phillips all of Thomasville. A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Friday, March 2, 2001, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Summit Street with the Rev. Donald P. Goodheart officiating. Calling hours will be 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, March 1, at the home. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Paul's Episcopal Church Senior Adults, 520 Summit St. Winston-Salem, NC 27101. Arrangements by Memorial Funeral Chapel.

FRAZIER

BELLEAIR BLUFF, Fla. - Mr. Calvin Luther Frazier Jr., 82, died Friday, Feb. 23, 2001. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 3, at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel conducted by Dr. William Medlin III. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the service. Interment will be in Forsyth Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Children's Home Inc., 1001 Reynolda Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27104.
