KING - Mrs. Agnes Fulk, 89, of 112 Fulk St., died at her home Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2001, after a period of declining health. She was born Sept. 3,1911, in Stokes County to Jim and Sally Cassell Fulk. Mrs. Fulk was a member of Boyles Chapel Primitive Baptist Church where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 3, 2001. Elders Jimmy Lankford and Vance Jones will officiate. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ramie Fulk in 1987 and two sons, Dellie Gray Fulk in 1979 and Michael Fulk in 1956. Surviving are eight daughters, Mrs. John (Alleen) Marshall of Mount Airy, Mrs. Garfield (Wyvena) Hicks, Mrs. D.R. (Ineida) Pratt, Mrs. Nellie Slater, Mrs. Lawrence (Nancy) Phillips and Mrs. Joseph (Diane) Beck, all of King, Mrs. Melburn (Anna Lee) Myers of Swansboro and Mrs. Billy (Sally) Essick of Manteo; four sons, Aldeen Fulk of Swansboro, Edgar Reid Fulk, Jimmy Leo Fulk and Barry Fulk, all of King; 26 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren and eight step-grandchildren; a sister, Irene Lankford of Greensboro and a special niece, Sara Hall. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Slate Funeral Home in King and other times at the home on Fulk Street in King. In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorials be made to Hospice of Forsyth County, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103 or to Boyles Chapel Primitive Baptist Church, cemetery Fund, 1656 Flat Shoals Road, King, NC 27021.

HALL

YADKINVILLE - Dr. Locksley Samuel Hall, 68, of Lone Hickory Community, passed away Monday, Feb. 26, 2001. He was born May 21, 1932, in Yadkin County to the late Dr. Samuel Locksley and Nellie Dinkins Hall. Dr. Hall was a graduate of Wake Forest University, Bowman Gray School of Medicine. Upon his graduation he served an internship at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem and moved to Charleston, W. Va. for his residency. Dr. Hall served a year in general practice at Hoots Memorial Hospital before returning for a surgical degree at Forsyth Medical Center. He then returned to Hoots Memorial Hospital to be a surgical associate with Dr. C.B. Hughes, and to continue a practice of general medicine. He remained at Hoots from 1966 until his retirement as chief of staff at Hoots Memorial in 1994. Dr. Hall also served with the Yadkinville Sertoma Club, was medical director for the Yadkin County Emergency Medical Services, medical director for prisons in Yadkin and Davie County and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Yadkinville. Surviving are his wife of 42 years, Marie Reavis Hall of the home; a son, Samuel Locksley (Tonya V.) Hall of Boonville; a grandson, Jarrett Samuel Hall; a sister, Ethel Marie (Richard "Dick") Kelly of Shelby; an aunt, Eva D. Reynolds, two uncles, W.G. Dinkins and Fred Dinkins all of Yadkinville; and a sister-in-law, Hilda Gray (Charles) Sofley of Yadkinville. Dr. Hall was preceded in death by a brother, Hiram Johnson Hall. His funeral service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday at the Gentry Family Chapel by the Rev. Dallas Prestwood and the Rev. Richard Eskew. Burial will follow in Harmony Grove Friends cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Gentry Family Funeral Service, Highway 601 N., Yadkinville. JOBE

Mr. George "Jack" Williams Jobe, 89, of 2322 Queen St. died Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Jobe was born Dec. 23, 1911, in Johnson City, Tenn., to Dudley Alphonso and Minnie Cooper Jobe. He was a high-school graduate and attended college. For 42 years he was the manager of F. W. Woolworth Co., retiring from the Thruway store. He was a devoted and longtime member of First Christian Church, where he was a former deacon and elder. Mr. Jobe was very active in several community services, including Meals on Wheels, the Soup Kitchen and the Chamber of Commerce. He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Grey Page Jobe. Surviving are his daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Halik of the home; three grand-children, Ruth Eller and husband Todd, George David Halik and Kenneth Stuart Halik, all of Winston-Salem; two great-grand-children, Alexander Todd Eller and Brandon David Halik; two nieces, Juanita Parker and Anne Kemp; a nephew, Robert Huffine; and a sister-in-law, Altha Jobe. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Christian Church, with the Rev. James Cobb officiating. The body will lie in state for 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel and at 409 Wiley Ave. after the funeral services. Memorials may be made to either First Christian Church, 2320 Country Club Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27104, or to Hospice and Palliative Care Center, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

LEONARD

LEXINGTON - Mr. David "Dave" Leonard, 81, of Rhodes Road died Tuesday, Feb. 27, at 6:20 p.m. at his home. Funeral services will be 4 p.m. Friday at Beck's United Church of Christ where he was a member. The Rev. Edward Rawls, the Rev. Eric Disher and Dr. Billy Joe Leonard will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery with full military Rites by VFW Post 3074. Surviving are his wife, Cornelia (Connie) Canoy Leonard of the home; sons Dwayne Leonard and wife Aleta and Dwight Leonard and wife Karen all of Lexington; daughters Davida "Dee" Beck and husband Paul, Davonna Hendley and husband John and Darlynn Guest and husband David all of Lexington; eight grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Davidson Funeral Home. MILLS

MOUNT AIRY - Mrs. Nannie Louise Suiter Mills, 101, of 1559 N. Main St., the widow of Lannie T. Mills Sr., who was the local manager of Western Union for many years, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2001, at Central Continuing Care in Mount Airy. Mrs. Mills was born Dec. 30, 1899, in Montgomery County, Tenn., the daughter of the late Edd and Vicy Lou Manning Suiter. Mrs. Mills was retired from Spencer's Inc. after 48 years of service and was a member of Salem United Methodist Church. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and a Gold Star Mother. Survivors include three daughters, Betsy Love, Edith M. Brown and Irene (Clifford) Shockley, all of Mount Airy; a son, Thomas C. (Dorothy) Mills of Winston-Salem; 11 grandchildren, Janice Love Yarbrough of Charlotte, Sheila Love Heath of Cary, Mark Love and Chris Love of Mount Airy, Gina Shockley Limpert and Ava Shockley Stroupe of Charlotte, Patti Brown Donnelly, Amy Brown Sawyers and Wesley Brown of Mount Airy, Lannie Dale Mills of Lake Norman and Lynn Mills Myers of Welcome; 17 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Omega Brown and Pearl Trotter, of Clarksville, Tenn.; and a brother, John Thomas Suiter of Detroit, Mich. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Mills was preceded in death by a son, Lannie T. Mills Jr., who was killed in action on the submarine USS Seawolf in 1944; two sons-in-law, Kolmer Love and Joe Bill Brown; and eight brothers and sisters. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 2, 2001, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, conducted by the Rev. Harry M. Sherrill and the Rev. R. J. Hartman. Burial will be in the Salem United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home and at other times at the home of Edith M. MOODY

MOCKSVILLE - Mrs. Delores Diaz Moody, 59, of Point Road passed away Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2001, at Davie County Hospital in Mocksville. Mrs. Moody was born Jan. 11, 1942, in Kanob County, W.Va. She was a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband of 41 years, Wade D. Moody; a daughter, Paula Edwards and husband Dan of Mount Ulla; and two grandchildren, Ashley and Morgan Edwards of Mount Ulla. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, March 2, 2001, at Jerusalem Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jimmy Lancaster officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will lie in state 30 minutes before the service. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, March 1, 2001, at Davie Funeral Service Chapel. PAYNE

Mr. Daniel Webster Payne Sr., 62, of 1763 Camden Road passed away Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001, at his residence. He was a native of Asheville, born Nov. 6, 1938, to the late John and Mary Payne and attended Stephen-Lee High School. He attended Union Bethel AME Church and was a retired employee of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. He is survived by his loving wife, Clara S. Payne of the home; two sons, Christopher L. Payne and Daniel W. Payne Jr. and a daughter, Mary M. Payne, all of Winston-Salem; two granddaughters; three grandsons; two sisters, Della P. Byrd and Christine Darity and two brothers, Williard Payne, all of Asheville, Frank Payne of Miami, Fla.; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 2, 2001, from the Union Bethel AME Church with the Rev. William Propst officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen cemetery. SMITH

SOUTHERN PINES - Virginia Adams Highsmith Smith died Tuesday, Feb. 27, at her home. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 2, at Community Congregational Church. She was a native of Philadelphia, Pa. She received a bachelor's degree in Bible from Wheaton College in Wheaton, Ill., where she was a cheerleader with Billy Graham. After college, she taught Bible in the Fayetteville Public Schools. She was a volunteer as a member of the welfare board, PTA president in Troy and director of Gilbert & Sullivan operettas in the elementary schools. She received her master's degree in education from UNC Greensboro. She was a guidance counselor at West Montgomery High School and Sandhills Community College, then was a drug and alcohol counselor at the Sandhills Mental Health Center. She was involved with the Sandhills Little Theater performances as a musician and actress. She was a member of Community Congregational Church, where she served as a deacon and chairman of the prayer committee. Surviving are her husband, Edgar B. Smith of the home; sons Charles David Highsmith and John Adams Highsmith of Winston-Salem; daughter Ellen Highsmith Silver of Rye, N.Y.; stepdaughters Kim Smith Gavrelis of Timonium, Md., and Karen Smith Rosenberg of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; four grandchildren; and a step-grandchild. Memorials are requested to FirstHealth Hospice, P.O. Box 1956, Pinehurst, NC 28370.

THACKER

KING - Mr. David Leo Thacker, 59, of Meadowbrook Drive died at his home Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2001. He was born March 25, 1941, in Stokesdale to Leo Gray and Frances Moore Thacker. He graduated from Madison in 1959 where he had participated in baseball. He continued to play in the Tri-County Leagues until his mid-30s. Mr. Thacker was employed at R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. for 32 years, retiring in 1992. He was married Sept. 16, 1961, to Joan Alice Wolff of King. The couple shared a love for sports and the outdoors and passed that love along to their three children. He loved to hunt and fish and did so as much as possible. The family took semi-annual fishing trips to the North Carolina Coast and retain wonderful memories of their experiences. Mr. Thacker was a loving and devoted husband, father and friend. He always put his family first. Surviving are his wife of 39 years, Joan Wolff Thacker of the home; a daughter, Sara T. Raynor of Tobaccoville; two sons, Bruce Alan Thacker of Charlotte and Brian Gray Thacker and wife Jessica of Winston-Salem; two granddaughters, Jessica and Emily Raynor of Tobaccoville; his mother, Frances Moore Thacker of Stokesdale; three sisters, Yvonne (Henry) Thomas and Janice (Pete) Joyce of Stokesdale and Carolyn (Tim) Wray of Madison; and two brothers, Wesley (Patsy) Thacker and Donnie (Jeanette) Thacker of Stokesdale. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 2, 2001, in the First Christian Church cemetery in King with Lamar Tillman and Bill Truitt, Ministers, officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 this evening at the First Christian Church on Meadowbrook Drive in King. Memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. SUMMERFIELD - SUSAN MARIE WAY ZINCHUCK

She was born Jan. 25, 1952, in Jackson County, Mich., to the late Robert Way and Esther Lamberson Way. Survivors include her husband, Dennis Zinchuck; her mother, Esther Lamberson Way of Summerfield; a son, Chris Zinchuck, serving the Lord abroad; two daughters, Nichole Kramer of Michigan and Amy Leacroy of Georgia; a sister, Kathy Carmicle of Florida; two brothers, Robert Way of Michigan and Jim Way of California; and three grand-children, Sara, Haley and Aidan. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 Thursday evening at Brooke Funeral Home in Stokesdale. BROWN

Mr. Jones Thomas "Shorty" Brown, 91, of 3000 Salemtowne Drive died Saturday, March 3, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Dec. 26, 1909, in Boonville to Henry J. and Ella Angell Brown. Mr. Brown moved to Forsyth County in May of 1926 and was a member of First United Church of Christ, where he served as an usher, deacon and elder. He was employed by Unique Furniture Makers for 50 years, retiring in 1976. Following his retirement he became an avid golfer and furniture craftsman. Survivors include his wife, Margaret Crotts Brown of the home; two daughters, Joyce Marshall of Advance and Rebecca Forest and husband William of Clemmons; four grandchildren, Gregory V. Marshall and wife Susan and Michael L. Marshall and wife Carol of Winston-Salem, Beth Councilman and husband Rodney of Burlington and Barrett Foust and Wife Lisha of Clemmons; and four great-grandchildren, Bryce and Meagan Marshall and Marshall and Clay Councilman. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel by the Rev. Christa Warise. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

BRYANT

Geraldine "Jerry" Rose Ziglar Bryant, 78, originally from Winston-Salem, died Friday, March 2, 2001, at Beverly Healthcare-Greensboro. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 4, 2001, at Vogler's Funeral Home, 2951 Reynolda Road, Winston-Salem. Burial will be at Forsyth Memorial Park. Mrs. Bryant was a member of Mineral Springs Baptist Church and worked as a receptionist for many years at the Forsyth County Courthouse. She is survived by two sons, Robert Marsden Bryant Jr. of Zebulon and Stephen Daryl Bryant of Greensboro; her father, Ralph W. Ziglar; two sisters, Carolyn Z. Johnson and Peggy Z. Grubbs; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

BURKE

Mrs. Lela Fulk Burke, 103, of Vienna Village died Saturday, March 3, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Burke was born Aug. 31, 1897, in Lewisville to Thomas William and Mary Millis Fulk. She was the oldest living member of Lewisville Baptist Church as well as the oldest living native of Lewisville. The first public telephone exchange in the Lewisville Community was operated by Mrs. Burke and her family from their home. Mrs. Burke was preceded in death by her husband, Aaron D. Burke; one daughter, Catherine B. Morgan; five sons, Aaron D. Jr., P. Ray, J. Thomas, Bobby O. and James T. Burke; brothers Wake, Edward and Hugh Fulk; and sisters Bertie Kiger and Fannie Conrad. Survivors are one daughter, Doris B. Todd of Winston-Salem; three sons, Paul E. Burke of Winston-Salem, T. Wake Burke and wife Lucy of Lewisville, and William A. "Buddy" Burke and wife Betty of Winston-Salem; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel by the Rev. Jeff Priest and Dr. Joe Coltrane. Burial will follow in Lewisville Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour before the service. Memorials may be made to Lewisville Baptist Church Building Fund, 125 Lewisville-Clemmons Road, Lewisville, NC 27023. MOREHEAD CITY - James Jaquelin "Jack" Crosswell III, 7, died Thursday morning at University of North Carolina Hospital Chapel Hill. He was the son of Dr. James J. "Jamie" Crosswell Jr. of Beaufort and Morehead City (formerly of Winston-Salem) and Emily Renfrow Crosswell of Morehead City. Services took place at 2 p.m. Saturday at Glad Tidings Pentecostal Holiness Church in Morehead City with the Rev. Jack Lee presiding. Burial followed at Carteret memorial Gardens, Beaufort. In addition to his parents, Jack is survived by his paternal grandmother Sarah Guthrie Crosswell of Beaufort; paternal grandparents Jack and Daphne Crosswell of Cripple Creek, Va.; paternal great-grandmother Ava G. Smith of Greensboro; maternal grand-parents Council and Emily Renfrow of Morehead City; aunts and uncles Patty and Eric Broyles of Morehead City, John and Donna Renfrow of Wilmington, Bob Renfrow of Shallotte, Vicky and Jimmy Renfrow of Pine Knoll Shores and Christy and Jimmy Williams of Swansboro; and five cousins, Sarah and J. Sharpe Williams and Summer, Dylan and Noah Renfrow. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Jack Crosswell Fund, c/o Bank of America, 4913 Arendell St., Morehead City, NC 28557. EDMISTON

BOOMER - Mrs. Bertha Margaret Walker Edmiston, 87, of NC Highway 268 West, Boomer, widow of James Alton Edmiston, died Saturday, March 3, 2001, at Wilkes Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 6, at Sharon Walker Baptist Church, with the Rev. Paul Laws and the Rev. Clifford Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mrs. Edmiston was born Nov. 6, 1913, in Caldwell County to Sidney York and Cora Lea McGee Walker. She was a member of Sharon Walker Baptist Church. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Dale (Naoma) Dula of Boomer; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. The family will be at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in North Wilkesboro from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, Wilkes County Chapter, P.O. Box 1101, North Wilkesboro, NC 28659.

GWIN

Jack Paul Gwin passed away Wednesday evening, Feb. 28, due to complications from a fall earlier in February. He was born Oct. 12, 1923, in Winfield, La. He grew up in Union Springs, Ala. He served in the U.S. Army Combat Engineers during World War II in England, France, Germany and the Philippines. After graduating from Auburn University with a degree in mechanical engineering, he worked two years for Humble Oil Co. in Baytown, Texas. He returned to Union Springs and was a partner with his father in Gwin Ice Co. He moved his family to Winston-Salem in 1956. He worked for Western Electric for 20 years before transferring to Southern Bell, where he worked for 10 years before retiring. He was married to Dixie Feagin Hall for 53 years. He is survived by his wife of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Myra Gwin-Summers and Rick Summers of Hillsborough, Dinah Stuart and Delma Stuart of Westfield; a son and daughter-in-law, Paul Gwin and Elaine Gwin of Winston-Salem and three granddaughters, Ashley Summers, Leigh Gwin and Ellen Gwin. Jack was an active member of Knollwood Baptist Church, Twin City Lions Club and Ardmore Community Club and had been active in the Telephone Pioneers. Friends and family will remember his wit and humor and his love for the outdoors, including hunting and fishing. With his wife, Dixie, he enjoyed dancing, traveling to Elderhostels around the world during their retirement and spending time with friends and family. He was an artist, a musician, a woodworker and a gardener. His easygoing manner and simple charm endeared him to all who were lucky enough to have known him throughout his life. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made in his memory to the Parkinson's Foundation or to Knollwood Baptist Church Memorial Garden. A memorial service was held 2 p.m. Saturday, March 3, 2001, at Knollwood Baptist Church.
