HIATT

ARARAT, Va. - Mrs. Emily Susan "Susie" Vipperman Hiatt, 92, of Ahart Ridge Road, Ararat, Va., widow of George W. Hiatt, passed away Saturday, March 3, 2001, at Eldercare of Hillsville, Va. Mrs. Hiatt was born in Patrick County, Va., on Aug. 29, 1908, daughter of Marion and Mary Ann Hall Vipperman. She was a homemaker and a member of Chestnut Grove Baptist Church. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Lena and Ewell Harold of Ararat, three daughters-in-law, Imogene Hiatt and Bessie Hiatt Williams of Cana, Va., and Viola Vipperman of Ararat; 11 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren; and three sisters-in-law, Alpha Hiatt and Carrie Hiatt of Mount Airy and Jackie Hiatt of Ararat. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Hiatt was preceded in death by a daughter, Pauline Boyd; three sons, Paul Hiatt, Fred Hiatt and Clyde Vipperman; three sisters, Bessie Harrell, Gracie Harold and Exie Scharfman; and a brother, John Will Vipperman. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, March 5, 2001, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel of Mount Airy. The service will be conducted by Rev. Arlis Thomas and the Rev. Porter Harrell, with burial in the Oakdale cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Moody Funeral Home of Mount Airy.

JAMES

KERNERSVILLE - Mrs. Ruth Sapp Laramore James, 85, formerly of Walkertown-Gutherie Road died Saturday, March 3, 2001, at the Rose Tara Retirement and Assisted Living Center in King. Mrs. James was born in Forsyth County, a daughter of Jasper Eugene and Lillie Mae Sapp, and was a member of the Gospel Light Baptist Church. Mrs. James' love of life was teaching Sunday school and spreading the Word. Surviving are a daughter, Wilda Clemmons of Winston Salem; a son and daughter-in-law, Wallace and Joyce Larrimore of Walkertown; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two stepsons and their wives, Ed and Mary Lou James of Tupelo, Miss., and Roger and Ilene James of Kernersville; and a stepdaughter, Imogene James of Kernersville. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at the Gospel Light Baptist church by Dr. Bobby Roberson and the Rev. Frank Shumate with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends 6:30-9 p.m. at the Hayworth Miller Cain Funeral Home and at other times at the home of her son at 4965 Reidsville Road. Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Stokes County, Danbury, NC 27016, or to Rose Tara, 1225 Plantation Drive, King, NC 27021.

JOHNSON

Robert Ted Johnson, 77, of 167 Beacher Gardner Road died Saturday, March 3, 2001, at his home. He was born Nov. 17, 1923, in Darlington, S.C., a son of Walter and Lina Lee Johnson. He retired in 1988 from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army. A member of V.F.W. Post 3074 in Lexington and the D.A.V., he was married in 1948 to Elizabeth O'Neal. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Lib O'Neal Johnson of the home; a daughter, Jeri Hand and her husband John of Thomasville; a son, Ted Johnson and his wife Pam of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, Jeffrey Long and his wife Ashlee, and Lori Rich; three great-grandchildren, Richard Rich and Caleb and Trevor Long; a sister, Mrs. Lizzie Jones of Darlington, S.C.; and many loving nieces and nephews. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Rennie Adcock, the Rev. Dennis Parnell and the Rev. E.B. Atkins. Burial will be in Parklawn Memorial Gardens with full military honors. The body will remain at the funeral home (Wallburg Chapel), 10301 N.C. 109 North, Winston-Salem, and the family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday. Memorials may be directed to Hospice and Palliative Care Center, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

LAWSON

DANBURY - Mr. Elmer Bernum Lawson, 72, of 2894 Piney Grove Church Road, Danbury, died Friday, March 2, 2001, at his home. He was born in Stokes County, Oct. 25, 1928, son of James Lemily and Edith Mabe Lawson. He was a retired farmer, a veteran of the Korean conflict, and was of the Baptist faith. Survivors are his wife, Mary Hall Lawson of the home; two daughters, Rita (Brent) Watts of Danbury and Terri Reese of Clayton; a son, Richard (Tammie) Lawson of Sandy Ridge; a sister, Thelma Venable of Westfield; a brother, Clyde (Betty) Lawson of Danbury; and six grandchildren, Danielle Watts, Leslie Watts, Andy Lawson, Abby Lawson, Ashley Reese and Amber Reese. The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, March 5, 2001, at Nelson Funeral Home by Elder Milton Gunter. Burial will be in the Lawson family cemetery. Visitation will be from 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Nelson Funeral Home and other times at the home. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Stokes County, P.O. Box 10, Danbury, NC 27016.

MOSER

CLEMMONS - Mrs. Emily Franks Moser of Clemmons died Saturday, March 3, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. She was born Jan. 27, 1910, to Mahlon and Mattie Hostetler Franks in Uniontown, Pa. Mrs. Moser was an elementary-school teacher. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Eben Moser. She is survived by one daughter, Joan Elizabeth Walters; three grandchildren; two sisters, Ruth Franks and Dorothy Brown, both of Uniontown; and one brother, Mahlon Franks of Cleveland, Ohio. Funeral services will be held at a later date.

NEAL

Mr. Walter Hylton Neal, 83, of Independence Village died Friday, March 2, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born July 31, 1917, in Surry County to John Thomas and Ellen Chilton Neal. Mr. Neal was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and retired from the tobacco business where he worked in Fairmont, West Jefferson and Winston-Salem. He was an avid vegetable gardener and enjoyed his yard at the home he built on Keating Drive. Mr. Neal was preceded in death by his wife,Frances Hyatt Neal. Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Charles H. and Irene Hogarth Neal of Richmond, Va., and Kenneth A. and Carolyn Lanier Neal of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren; and one sister, Ina N. Cook of Winston-Salem. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel by Dr. Gary Chapman. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 6:30-8:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Winston-Salem Rescue Mission, P.O. Box 20420, Winston-Salem, NC 27120, or Senior Services, 836 Oak St., Tobacco Square, Ste. 320, Winston-Salem, NC 27101-1407.

NIELSEN

WILMINGTON - Alma Whitman Nielsen died March 2, 2001, in Wilmington. She was born Nov. 5, 1912, in Forsyth County, the daughter of Sarah Emaline Jones and William Ambrose Whitman. She was married July 5, 1930, to Rasmus K. "Ben" Nielsen. Mrs. Nielsen spent her early married life in Winston-Salem. She later lived in Opelika, Ala., Raleigh, Richmond, Va., and Norfolk, Va. She returned to Winston-Salem in the early 1980s and remained here until moving to Wilmington in 1992 to live with her daughter. After the death of her daughter she lived with her devoted grandson Jimmy Croom. While living in Winston-Salem she was a member of Lutheran Church of the Epiphany. She was preceded in death by her husband and her daughter, Barbara Horrel. She is survived by three grandsons, James A., Larry and Ben Croom; six great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren, all of Wilmington. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews in the Winston-Salem area. A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, March 5, 2001, at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Sunday at Voglers Funeral Home on Reynolda Road. Memorials may be made to the organization of the donor's choice.

PATTERSON

Mr. Delmas Monroe "Pat" Patterson, 72, of Winston-Salem, died Friday, March 2, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Oct. 6, 1928, in Harnett County to the late Paul Monroe and Zula Marie Patterson. Mr. Patterson was retired from McLean Trucking Co. and was a member of Local #391. He was also a member of Waughtown Baptist Church. Pat was a loving Husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Ruth Patterson. Surviving are his wife Elaine Hahn Patterson of the home; three daughters, Gayle P. Cook and husband Tom of Rockingham, Lenna T. Sweat and husband George of Raleigh and Susan T. Simpson and husband Charles of Winston-Salem; three sons, Greg Patterson and wife Pam of Columbia, S.C., Arthur Thevenin and wife Debbie of Gallipolis Ferry, W. Va., and Dennis Thevenin of Lakeside Park, Ky.; 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Grace Marie Gillis and husband Bob of Broadway, N.C.; and one brother, Clayton J. Patterson and wife Gretha of Broadway. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel by the Rev. Joe McWethy. Burial will follow in Parklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Waughtown Baptist Church, 1538 Waughtown St., Winston-Salem, NC 27107.

PRIDDY

DANBURY - Polly Hawkins Priddy died Saturday at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem.
Arrangements are incomplete at the Ray Funeral Home in Madison.

REDDING

Mr. Ernest Lee Redding, 46, of 4049 Bethania Station Road died at his home Saturday morning after a brief illness. He was born in Indianapolis on July 16, 1954, the son of William and Mary Barrett Redding. Mr. Redding served in the U.S. Navy for 11 years, including Vietnam. He received the National Defense Service Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Service Deployment Ribbon, the Navy Meritorious Unit Commenda-tion, the Operation Frequent Wind Award and the Human-itarian Service Award. He was a pipe fitter by trade and worked for John Kirkland Inc., prior to his illness. He was preceded in death by his mother. Surviving are his wife, Gabriela Moreno-Hassey Redding of the home; three sons, Ernest Lee Redding Jr., Chase A. Redding and Nicholas A. Redding; daughter Raven A. Redding and unborn daughter Anna-Gabriela Redding whose birth is expected in May; his father; his stepfather Ray Sigmon; two brothers, William Redding Jr. and Larry Sigmon; and a sister, Gloria Comingore. The family will receive friends during a wake beginning 7 p.m. Sunday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel. A service of Christian burial will be held 4 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, with Father Cecil Tice as officiant. military rites will be performed by V.F.W. District 11 Honor Guard.

THOMAS

CHARLOTTE - Louise Stilwell Thomas, 94, of Charlotte, went to be with the Lord Saturday, March 3, 2001. Mrs. Thomas was born July 31, 1906, in Charlotte, a daughter of the late William C. Stilwell and Ellen Delina Hines Stilwell. She has left behind 100 family members including seven children, 20 grandchildren, 36, great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren to celebrate her life. Her family rejoices in the peace of knowing that she is with the angels that have protected her for so many years. Mrs. Thomas was preceded in death by her husband Jenks James Thomas. Surviving are her children, Peggy T. Cromer and husband Pete Cromer of Winston-Salem, Joyce T. McCorkle and husband Carvin M. McCorkle of Charlotte, Sue T. Hooks and husband M. Wayne Hooks of Charlotte, Nancy T. Short (Mrs. Ronald D. Short), Jerry L. Thomas and wife Nancy C. Thomas of Charlotte, Linda T. Hunter and husband Thomas R. Hunter of Cornelius and Jenks James Thomas Jr. of Charlotte; 20 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren; stepbrother Perry F. Lafoy and wife Eldora Lafoy of Lancaster, S.C.; and stepsister Eddie Lee Frost (Mrs. Ralph Frost) of Collinsville, Ill. A funeral to celebrate her life will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 7, 2001, at Garr Memorial Church with the Rev. Alfred Garr officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen City cemetery. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at McEwen Funeral Service, Charlotte Chapel. Memorials may be sent to the Nevins Center, Inc., for Retarded Citizens, 3523 Nevins Road, Charlotte, NC 28269. Arrangements are by McEwen Funeral and Cremation Service, Charlotte Chapel.

WALKER

Mr. Clarence E. "Bud" Walker, 69, died at Duke University Medical Center, Feb. 28, 2001, following surgery. Bud was a graduate of Duke Engineering School and remained an avid fan of the Duke Blue Devils. He is survived by his wife, Jean; a daughter, Laura (Chris) Suich; a son, David (Christian) Walker; two sisters, Mrs. Doris Johnson and Mrs. Jean Vickers of Durham; and three grandchildren. A memorial service celebrating the life of Mr. Walker will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, March 5, at Centenary United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Jack Yarbrough and the Rev. Roland Barnhardt officiating. The family will receive friends in the church parlor immediately after the worship service. Memorials may be directed to Centenary United Methodist Church, 646 W. Fifth St., Winston-Salem, NC 27102.

WHISENANT

ELKIN - Mrs. Cline Whisenant, 91, died Saturday morning. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Kennedy Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Gayle Stoker. Burial will be in State Road Primitive Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends 1-2 p.m. Sunday before the service. Surviving is one sister, Pennie Hanes Carter of Elkin. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to State Road Primitive Baptist Church cemetery Fund, c/o Lou Hampton, 1384 CC Camp Road, Elkin, NC 28621. Kennedy Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

BOB-McKOY

"She will be missed and loved always by all who truly knew her." Mrs. Gloria Howell Bob-McKoy, 62, of 109 Echo Glen Drive, Apt. C-1, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2001, at her residence. She was born March 30, 1938, in Winston-Salem to the late Brown Eddie Howell and Wyoming Johnson Howell. She attended Columbia Heights Primary School and Atkins High School. In 1960 she moved to New York, N.Y., where she was employed with Bell Atlantic Telephone Co. and retired as a computer analyst after 30 years of service. She returned to Winston-Salem in early 2000. She is survived by two devoted granddaughters, Regina Bob and Jessica Bob of Baltimore, Md.; three additional grandchildren, Steven, Stephanie and Elijah Bob; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 3, 2001, at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. L.S. Werts officiating. Interment will be in the Evergreen cemetery. The family visitation will be from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. (Russell)

Geraldine "Jerry" Rose Ziglar Bryant, 78, originally from Winston-Salem, died Friday, March 2, 2001, at Beverly Healthcare-Greensboro. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 4, 2001, at Vogler's Funeral Home, 2951 Reynolda Road, Winston-Salem. Burial will be at Forsyth Memorial Park. Mrs. Bryant was a member of Mineral Springs Baptist Church and worked as a receptionist for many years at the Forsyth County Courthouse. She is survived by two sons, Robert Marsden Bryant Jr. of Zebulon and Stephen Daryl Bryant of Greensboro; her father, Ralph W. Ziglar; two sisters, Carolyn Z. Johnson and Peggy Z. Grubbs; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, March 3, 2001, at Vogler Reynolda Road Funeral Home, Winston-Salem.

CAESAR

Ms. Linda Ann Caesar passed away Feb. 24, 2001, at Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Cen-ter. She was born June 14, 1949, to the late Louise Gray Caesar and Jimmy Baxter Caesar. A lifelong resident of Winston-Salem, Linda was a 1968 graduate of Paisley High School and was a skilled housekeeper where she received numerous honors. She leaves to cherish her memory a daughter, Caprice Caesar; two grand-children, Willette and Teddy Caesar of Winston-Salem; two devoted uncles, Sammie (Inez) Caesar of Walkertown and James Gray of Winston-Salem; a devoted aunt, Whileminia (Henry) Jarrett of Los Angeles, Calif.; a special cousin, Sandra R. Gray of Los Angeles; her father, Jimmy Caesar and stepmother Mozelle Caesar; six brothers, Steven (Pamela) Caesar, Ronald (Valerie) Caesar and Christopher Caesar, all of Winston-Salem, Darren K. Caesar of Thomasville; Elder Alan R. (Deborah) Caesar of High Point and Jimmy Caesar of Charlotte; and two sisters, Annie E. (James) Lylerly and JoAnn Dobson of Winston-Salem. She also leaves to cherish her memory her devoted companion and friend, Charles Hauser; a devoted friend, Michael Wright; a devoted caretaker, Aubrey Cannady, all of Winston-Salem; and a host of devoted friends, nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and extended families. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 3, 2001, at the Frances S. & Jerry C. Gilmore Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. Joe Schuler officiating. Mrs. Mable Rebecca Satterfield Morris Clark, 67, of 569 Fieldtop Drive, died Thursday, March 1, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born March 10, 1933, in Forsyth County, a daughter of Charles and Mary Whisenhunt Satterfield. She was retired from Thomasville Furniture Industries' Patterson Avenue plant. She was married to the late Franklin Delaney Morris. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Linda Webb and her husband, Roger, of Clemmons, Ms. Frankie Bledsoe and Miss Rebecca Renee Morris of the home; a son, Richard Morris of Winston-Salem; a sister, Mrs. Dorothy S. Jacobs of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; 10 grand-children; and six great-grand-children. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in the J.C. Green & Sons Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Neal Eller. Burial will be in Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons. The body will remain at the funeral home, 10301 N. NC Highway 109 (Wallburg Chapel), and the family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday. The family would like to thank Hospice for the special care staff members gave to Mrs. Clark.
