GAITHER

Mr. Gurney Clay Gaither, 69, of Barney Avenue, died Thursday morning at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Eaton Funeral Home Chapel in Mocksville with the Rev. Rodney Smith officiating. Burial will be in the cemetery of New Union United Methodist Church in the Sheffield community of Davie County. The family will be at the funeral home from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday. Mr. Gaither was born in Iredell County June 12, 1931, to the late William Lucio and Edna Stroud Gaither and was a retired mechanic with McClean Trucking Co. with 28 years of service. Mr. Gaither was an avid fan of NASCAR racing and especially enjoyed country music. Surviving are his former wife of 23 years, Lillie Potts Gaither of Winston-Salem; three daughters, Mrs. Earl (Rita) Moses of Kernersville, twins Cladeen Gaither Rose of New Bern and Mrs. Roger (Claudeen) Gaither Farmer of Winston-Salem; a son, Randall Clay Gaither and wife Teresa of Winston-Salem; eight grandchildren; a great grandchild; and a sister, Mrs. Louis (Lucille) Morrison of Galax, Va. He was preceded in death by a very special friend of 36 years, Lucy Owenby.

GWIN

Jack Paul Gwin passed away Wednesday evening, Feb. 28, due to complications from a fall earlier in February. He was born Oct. 12,1923, in Winfield, La. He grew up in Union Springs, Ala. He served in the U.S. Army Combat Engineers during World War II in England, France, Germany and the Philippines. After graduating from Auburn University with a degree in mechanical engineering, he worked two years for Humble Oil Co. in Baytown, Texas. He returned to Union Springs and was a partner with his father in Gwin Ice Co. He moved his family to Winston-Salem in 1956. He worked for Western Electric for 20 years before transferring to Southern Bell, where he worked for 10 years before retiring. He was married to Dixie Feagin Hall for 53 years. He is survived by his wife of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Myra Gwin-Summers and Rick Summers of Hillsborough, Diane Stuart and Delma Stuart of Westfield; a son and daughter-in-law, Paul Gwin and Elaine Gwin of Winston-Salem; and three granddaughters, Ashley Summers, Leigh Gwin and Ellen Gwin. Jack was an active member of Knollwood Baptist Church, Twin City Lions Club, Ardmore Community Club and had been active in the Telephone Pioneers. Friends and family will remember his wit and humor and his love for the outdoors including hunting and fishing. With his wife, Dixie, he enjoyed dancing, traveling to Elderhostels around the world during their retirement and spending time with friends and family. He was an artist, a musician, a woodworker and a gardener. His easygoing manner and simple charm endeared him to all who were lucky enough to have known him throughout his life. In lieu of flower, the family requests that memorials be made to his memory to the Parkinson's Foundation or to Knollwood Baptist Church Memorial Garden. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 3, 2001, at Knollwood Baptist Church. A reception will follow in the church foyer.

HAMILTON

Norarender D. Hamilton was born Nov. 8, 1947, to the late Vance and Viola Ireene Greene Dobson in Forsyth County, Winston-Salem. She departed this life Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2001, following a period of illness. She attended elementary school in Boonville and Anderson High School in Winston-Salem, where she graduated in 1967. She was employed by Polar Plastics Inc. for approximately 29 years. She was a member and attended First Waughtown Baptist Church for most of her life. Norarender leaves to cherish in memory her husband, George Richard Hamilton; a son, Richard Vance; a sister, Elsie Smith (Johnny); two brothers, Paul Dobson (Mozella) and Charles Dobson (Gwendolyn); five sisters-in-law, LoAnn, Julia, Ella, Alberta and Geraldine; a brother-in-law, Thomas; and a number of nephews, nieces, cousins and other relatives of the extended family. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, March 3, 2001, at First Waughtown Baptist Church with the Rev. Dennis Bishop officiating. Family visitation will begin at 12:30 p.m. Interment will follow in the Piedmont Memorial Gardens cemetery. Clark S. Brown & Sons Funeral Home is in charge of services and arrangements.

HEDGECOCK

HIGH POINT - Mr. Orest Joseph "O.J." Hedgecock Jr., 67, of 3911 N. Main St. died Feb. 28, 2001, at High Point Regional Hospital after several years of declining health. He has now gone to meet his Savior and Lord. He was born Sept. 21, 1933, on his grandparent's farm (presently known as Swansgate), the son of Orest Joseph Hedgecock Sr. and Ruth Payne Hedgecock, both of whom preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Faye Baxley, Pearl Wade and Sarah Rich, and a brother, Denny Hedgecock. He resided in High Point most of his life and attended Oak View School and High Point Central. O.J. was well known for his great knowledge in gunmaking and designing. He also held several patents, one being "The Hedgecock Star," cut in a diamond design, and also a patent for diecasting metal. O.J. was a member of Lebanon United Methodist Church. He was a personal friend of Elvis Presley and numerous country music stars. He was a contender for the 1952 Olympics in weight lifting when a job-related accident changed all that. He was an avid racecar driver at Seagrove Dragstrip as well as a competitor in many other sports. Until his health declined, he was very active with the Oak Hollow Boat Drags. He was employed many years with Styrex Industry and Ferlin Mold. He also owned and operated Hedgecock Technical Welding. He is survived by three sons, Orest Joseph "Joe" Hedgecock III and his wife Ginger of Winston-Salem, Christopher "Chris" Mark Hedgecock Sr. and his friend Phyllis Vanderburg of the home and David Vernon Hedgecock of High Point; a daughter, Cynthia Jean "Bug" Williams of High Point; six grandchildren, Tina Malcom, Mark Hedgecock, Dennis Christopher Hedgecock, Tiffany Dennis, Jason Dennis and Ryan Curtis Mann; a great-granddaughter, Cheyanne Malcom; four sisters, Betsy Brown, Barbara Wiles, Mary Kathryn Brown and Joy Sample of Winston-Salem; a brother, Tommy Hedgecock; and 34 nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Trulite Baptist Church officiated by the Rev. William Paul Sparks and the Rev. Ardis D. Payne. Interment will follow in the Abbotts Creek Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 Friday night at Cumby Family Funeral Home in High Point.

JOBE

Mr. George "Jack" Williams Jobe, 89, of 2322 Queen St. died Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Jobe was born Dec. 23, 1911, in Johnson City, Tenn., to Dudley Alphonso and Minnie Cooper Jobe. He was a high-school graduate and attended college. For 42 years he was the manager of F. W. Woolworth Co., retiring from the Thruway store. He was a devoted and longtime member of First Christian Church, where he was a former deacon and elder. Mr. Jobe was very active in several community services, including Meals on Wheels, the Soup Kitchen and the Chamber of Commerce. He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Grey Page Jobe and a daughter, Sarah Frances Collins. Surviving are his daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Halik of the home; three grand-children, Ruth Eller and husband Todd, George David Halik and Kenneth Stuart Halik, all of Winston-Salem; two great-grand-children, Alexander Todd Eller and Brandon David Halik; two nieces, Juanita Parker and Anne Kemp; a nephew, Robert Huffine; and a sister-in-law, Altha Jobe. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Christian Church, with the Rev. James Cobb officiating. The body will lie in state for 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel and at 409 Wiley Ave. after the funeral services. Memorials may be made to either First Christian Church, 2320 Country Club Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27104, or to Hospice and Palliative Care Center, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

JOHNSON

Mildred Hutchins Johnson, loving and proud mother, encouraging grandmother, caring sister and faithful friend, went to celebrate with the Lord Thursday, March 1, 2001. Mrs. Johnson was born in Piedmont, S.C., March 5, 1929, and was a member of Vernon Forest Baptist Church. Surviving are her children, Steve, Michael and Meta Johnson; stepdaughter Brenda Johnson; grandchildren Krista, Jonathan and Michael; sisters Mary Lankford, Edith DeMers and May Simpson; and brothers Frank and Paul Hutchins. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 3, 2001, at Vogler's Main Street Chapel by Dr. Billy Martin and the Rev. Terry Coats. Burial will follow in Woodland cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until service time and request that any memorials may be made to the Winston-Salem Rescue Mission.

LINK

John Marshall Link Sr., 80, 4600 Pleasant Green Church Road, died Wednesday evening at Hillcrest Convalescent Center. Mr. Link was a native of Orange County, the son of the late John A. and Ruby Cole Link. He was educated in the Orange County schools and attended Duke University. He was a member of Pleasant Green United Metho-dist Church. Mr. Link was a former member of Mount Hermon Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday school, was Sunday school superintendent and a deacon. Mr. Link was a professional engineer, employed with Western Electric in Burlington for 30 years, retiring in 1975, and later at UNC-Chapel Hill for 10 years. In 1985 he founded his own real-estate company. Mr. Link was a charter member of the Durham Engineers Club and a member of the Eagle Masonic Lodge # 19, in Hillsborough. Surviving are three sons, John Marshall Link Jr., and wife Ginger E., Robert E. Link and wife Becky H. and Thomas Emerson Link, all of Orange County; a brother, Boyce C. Link and wife, Era C. "Jo" of Orange County; sister-in-law Doris C. Link of Winston-Salem; and four grandchildren, Ryan Z. Link, Elizabeth Ann Link, Melody Ann Link and Lori Suzanne Link. Mr. Link was preceded by a loving wife and mother, Peggy Sykes Link, and a, brother, William G. Link of Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday in the Hall-Wynne Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. David Girod officiating. Burial will be in Maplewood cemetery in Durham. Pallbearers will be David Link, Mike Link, Andy Link, Jim Carter, John Carter, Chuck Barbour, Phillip Alford and Steve Couch. Honorary pallbearers will be Todd Link, Carlton Couch, Fred Brown, Lewis Brown, Victor Garrard and members of Eagle Lodge # 19. McLEAN

LINCOLNTON - Mrs. Margaret Rood McLean, 91, of the Abernethy Center, formerly of Lincolnton died unexpectedly Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2001. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at Warlick Funeral Home in Lincolnton. A graveside service will follow at 2:30 p.m. at Hollybrook cemetery with the Rev. E. Lee Ellis officiating. A memorial service will be held 4 p.m. Saturday at Abernethy Center in Newton with the Rev. Wannamaker Hardin and the Rev. Al Mullen officiating. Mrs. McLean was born Jan. 23, 1910, in Port Chester, N.Y. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Grace Rood and her husband, the Rev. Miles Augustus McLean Jr., who was a United Methodist minister in the Western North Carolina Conference. Mrs. McLean was a librarian and devoted wife and mother who actively supported her husband in his ministry for 64 years. She was a vital participant in the life and activities of Abernethy Center. Her gracious and loving spirit were a blessing to all who knew her. Survivors include a son, Mark McLean and wife Libby of Walhalla, S.C.; two daughters, Carolyn Gilbert and husband Hoyle of Charlotte and Betsy Hardin and husband Wannamaker of Hendersonville; seven grandchildren, Craig Gilbert, Alan Gilbert, Eric Hardin, Ed Hardin, Michael McLean, Mitzi McLean and Anna McLean; and two great-grandchildren, Kelly Gilbert and Rory Hardin. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Lincoln County, 107 N. Cedar St., Lincolnton, NC 28092 or in honor of the staff of the Abernethy Center, Abernethy Center, 102 Leonard Ave., Newton, NC 28658.

PORTER

Mr. Charles Higgins Porter, 72, of Winston-Salem, formerly of North Wilkesboro, died Monday at Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center. He was born in North Wilkesboro on Feb. 6, 1929, to Charles Harold Porter and Bessie Higgins Porter. He had been employed by the medical center. He was preceded in death by his wife, Patty Young Porter. Surviving is a niece, Judy P. Nichols of Purlear. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, March 3, at Davis Chapel, Wake Forest University Baptist Center. Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel is serving the Porter family.

ROANE

Mr. Courtney Sutton Roane, 92, died Thursday, March 1, 2001, at Arbor Acres. Mr. Roane was born Sept. 23, 1908, in Richmond, Va. to Lawrence Courtney and Willie R. Roane. He lived in Richmond until 1958, when he was transferred by A.M. Pullen Co. to Greensboro. Mr. Roane was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church and the Clay Chandler Sunday School Class. He was also active in the Men's Club and Residence Council at Arbor Acres, where he lived for the past nine years. Mr. Roane was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Barbour Roane. Surviving are his daughter, Courtney R. Slawter and her husband Larry G. Slawter of Winston-Salem; three grandsons, B. Sutton Slawter and wife Dana and J. Michael Slawter and wife Laura, all of Winston-Salem, and Mark A. Slawter and wife Ashley of Raleigh; and two great-grandsons, Preston Sutton Slawter and James Lawrence Slawter. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel. A memorial service will be conducted in the Fellowship Hall of Arbor Acres at 11 a.m. Saturday. A graveside service will follow at 1 p.m. in Westminster Gardens in Greensboro. Memorials may be made to Arbor Acres, 1244 Arbor Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27104.

SAYLOR

KEY WEST, Fla. - Milton John Saylor, 57, died Feb. 23, 2001, at Mount Sinai Medical Center, Miami Beach, Fla., from complications following heart surgery. He was born in Forsyth County Nov. 28, 1943, as the youngest son to Willie Edwin and Pauline Wolfe Saylor. Milton was a native of Kernersville, a graduate of Robert B. Glenn High School, and attended Wingate College. After an extensive career in broadcasting and advertising, he spent several years in fire apparatus sales. He retired to Key West, Fla., in 1998. Milton was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Willie Edwin Saylor Jr. He is survived by his only child, a daughter, Milane Saylor Marolf and husband Chris of Charlotte; two precious grandchildren, Caitlyn and Tristen Marolf of Charlotte; a brother, Glenn Raymond Saylor Sr. of Atlantic Beach; three nephews and their families; and many wonderful friends. A memorial graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 3, 2001, at Eastlawn Gardens of Memory in Kernersville with the Rev. Amis Daniel officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to American Cancer Society, 4-A Oak Branch Dr., Greensboro NC 27405. Arrangements are being handled by Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.

THACKER

KING - Mr. David Leo Thacker, 59, of Meadowbrook Drive died at his home Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2001. He was born March 25, 1941, in Stokesdale to Leo Gray and Frances Moore Thacker. He graduated from Madison High School in 1959, where he had participated in baseball. He continued to play in the Tri-County Leagues until his mid-30s. Mr. Thacker was a member of First Christian Church in King and was employed at R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. for 32 years, retiring in 1992. He was married Sept. 16, 1961, to Joan Alice Wolff of King. The couple shared a love for sports and the outdoors and passed that love along to their three children. He loved to hunt and fish and did so as much as possible. The family took semi-annual fishing trips to the North Carolina coast and retain wonderful memories of their experiences. Mr. Thacker was a loving and devoted husband, father and friend. He always put his family first. Surviving are his wife of 39 years, Joan Wolff Thacker of the home; a daughter, Sara T. Raynor of Tobaccoville; two sons, Bruce Alan Thacker of Charlotte and Brian Gray Thacker and wife Jessica of Winston-Salem; two granddaughters, Jessica and Emily Raynor of Tobaccoville; his mother, Frances Moore Thacker of Stokesdale; three sisters, Yvonne (Henry) Thomas and Janice (Pete) Joyce of Stokesdale and Carolyn (Tim) Wray of Madison; and two brothers, Wesley (Patsy) Thacker and Donnie (Jeanette) Thacker of Stokesdale.. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 2, 2001, in the First Christian Church cemetery in King with Lamar Tillman and Bill Truitt, ministers, officiating. Memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

WARD

ELKIN - Mrs. Gladys Stearns Ward of 156 Collins Road died Thursday, March 01, 2001. A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Hollywood cemetery with a memorial service to follow at 2 p.m. in the chapel of First Baptist Church in Elkin by Dr. Bill Johnson. The family will receive friends following the service at the home. Mrs. Ward was born in Bridgewater, Mass. Oct. 2, 1908, to Theophilus B. and Mary Young Stearns. Mrs. Ward was a registered nurse and was a graduate of Keene School of Nursing in New Hampshire. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Elkin. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bennie Ray Ward. Surviving are a son, Bennie Ray (Anne) Ward Jr. of Laneview, Va.; a daughter, Janice Mosher of Cotati, Calif.; eight grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren. The family suggests that any memorials be made to First Baptist Church in Elkin. Kennedy Funeral Home in Elkin is in charge of arrangements.

WITCHER

JAMESTOWN - Mrs. Wanda Damron Witcher, 79, died Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2001, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home.
She was born July 1, 1921 in Wayne County, W.Va., to John Wesley and Emma Zetta Maynard Damron.
Survivors include two sisters, Lucille Damron Abbott and Anna Mae Damron Fraley and a brother, John Shelby Damron. Funeral services will be Saturday, March 3, 2001 at 11 a.m. at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.
Interment will follow in Crestview Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

WOODS

Infant DeYonna Woods passed away Feb. 26, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Evergreen cemetery.
Professional services are implemented by Beasley's Funeral Service.

ANDERSON

Mr. Louis Anderson of 1209-C South Caldwell St. died March 4, 2001 at his residence.
Services are entrusted to Beasley's Funeral Service. Plans are incomplete.
