BROWN

Mr. Jones Thomas "Shorty" Brown, 91, of 3000 Salemtowne Drive died Saturday, March 3, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Dec. 26, 1909, in Boonville to Henry J. and Ella Angell Brown. Mr. Brown moved to Forsyth County in May of 1926 and was a member of First United Church of Christ, where he served as an usher, deacon and elder. He was employed by Unique Furniture Makers for 50 years, retiring in 1976. Following his retirement he became an avid golfer and furniture craftsman. Survivors include his wife, Margaret Crotts Brown of the home; two daughters, Joyce Marshall of Advance and Rebecca Foust and husband William of Clemmons; four grandchildren, Gregory V. Marshall and wife Susan, and Michael L. Marshall and wife Carol of Winston-Salem, Beth Foust Councilman and husband Rodney of Burlington, and Barrett Foust and wife Lisha of Clemmons; and four great-grandchildren, Bryce Marshall, Megan Marshall, Matthew Marshall and Clay Councilman. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel by the Rev. Christa Warise. Private burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to First United Church of Christ, 1912 Waughtown St., Winston-Salem, NC 27107.

BURKE

Mrs. Lela Fulk Burke, 103, of Vienna Village died Saturday, March 3, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Burke was born Aug. 31, 1897, in Lewisville to Thomas William and Mary Millis Fulk. She was the oldest living member of Lewisville Baptist Church as well as the oldest living native of Lewisville. The first public telephone exchange in the Lewisville Community was operated by Mrs. Burke and her family from their home. Mrs. Burke was preceded in death by her husband, Aaron D. Burke; one daughter, Catherine B. Morgan; five sons, Aaron D. Jr., P. Ray, J. Thomas, Bobby O. and James T. Burke; brothers Wake, Edward and Hugh Fulk; and sisters Bertie Kiger and Fannie Conrad. Survivors are one daughter, Doris B. Todd of Winston-Salem; three sons, Paul E. Burke of Winston-Salem, T. Wake Burke and wife Lucy of Lewisville, and William A. "Buddy" Burke and wife Betty of Winston-Salem; one daughter-in-law, Louise Davis Burke; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel by the Rev. Jeff Priest and Dr. Joe Coltrane. Burial will follow in Lewisville Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour before the service. Memorials may be made to Lewisville Baptist Church Building Fund, 125 Lewisville-Clemmons Road, Lewisville, NC 27023. GLEN ALLEN, Va. - Lou M. Fulp, 64, formerly of 9375 Man of War Court, Glen Allen, Va., is finally at peace March 3, 2001. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Joseph Shepherd, and is survived by her husband Samuel C. Fulp Sr. of Amelia, Va.; her daughter Sandy Shepherd and her husband Arthur and their children Sherry, Ashley and Sarah of Glen Allen; her son Sammy, his wife Angela and their children Zachary and Tyler of California, Md.; her daughter Kim Fulp of Nelson, Va.; her stepdaughter Brenda Hailey, her husband Skipper and their children Tim and Shane of King; her stepdaughter Vicki Rutledge, her husband Steve and their children Chad and Lisa of King; two great-granddaughters, Kelsey and Gracie; her sister Nathalie Marshall and her husband Allen of Liberty; her brother John Marshall and his wife Diane of Walnut Cove; her sister Nancy Badgett of Kernersville; and many cherished friends. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippen-ham Chapel, 6900 Hull St. Road, where the family will receive friends 4-9 p.m. Monday. HICKS

MOUNT AIRY - Mrs. Mary Cemanthia Forrest Hicks, 67, of 561 Orchard View Drive, Mount Airy, wife of Thomas "Josh" Hicks, passed away Saturday, March 3, 2001, at her home. Mrs. Hicks was born in Surry County March 7, 1933, daughter of Lucy Culler Forrest and the late John Forrest. She was a homemaker and a member of New Venture Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband, Thomas "Josh" Hicks of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Belinda and Larry Sumner of Mount Airy; one son and daughter-in-law, Davey and Sammie Hicks of King; four granddaughters and a spouse, Monica Hicks and Melissa Hicks of King, Jennifer and Kris Laws of Mount Airy and Priscilla Ann Jessup of Rural Hall; her mother Lucy Culler Forrest of Mount Airy; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Barbara and Dillard Goad of Mount Airy and Lona and Herbert Reynolds of Winston-Salem; and three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Junior and Anne Forrest, and Mac Forrest of Mount Airy and Bill and Margie Forrest of Rural Hall. In addition to her father, Mrs. Hicks was preceded in death by two brothers, Lee Forrest and Aldy Forrest. The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at New Venture Baptist Church. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Larry Thomas, the Rev. Jerry Vernon and Chaplain Stewart Roten, with burial in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Monday at Moody Funeral Home of Mount Airy, where her body will remain until carried to the church to lie in state 30 minutes before the funeral service. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Hospice of Surry County, 1326 N. Main St., Mount Airy, NC 27030, or New Venture Baptist Church Fellowship Building Fund, 228 N.E. Pine St., Mount Airy, NC 27030.

HIGGINBOTHAM

Mrs. Vernice Williamson Higginbotham, 94, formerly of 721 Liberia St., passed away Saturday, March 3, 2001, at the Britthaven Nursing Facility in Kernersville. She was a native of Richmond, Va., born May 24, 1906 to Early J. and Willie Caldwell Adams and received her education in Richmond. She later moved to Chicago, Ill., where she was employed with Mandle Brothers Department Store. She was joined in holy matrimony to Howard Higginbotham. She was an inactive member of St. Benedict the Moor Catholic Church. Mrs. Higginbotham was a resident of the Happy Hill Gardens for over 50 years. She is survived by her son Severus H. Higginbotham (Lois Hicks); seven grandchildren, Reginald Pettiford of Raleigh, Travis and Tomont Williams, Severus Hicks, Sherita R. Hicks, Shawanna D. Hicks and Shervae J. Higginbotham, all of Winston-Salem; her beloved goddaughter Vivian Walters (William); godson Willie Austin; devoted friend the Rev. Roy Blake; and many other relatives and friends. A service in her memory will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 6, 2001, from the Russell Funeral Home Chapel, with Father Lawrence J. Hunt, S.J., presiding. Mrs. Higginbotham will be returned to Dallas, Texas, where she will be laid to rest beside her husband. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Carl H. Russell Sr.-Florrie S. MARION

ELKIN - Mr. Fred Glenn Marion 71, of Pleasant Hill Drive, Elkin, passed away Sunday, March 4, 2001, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. Mr. Marion was born Feb. 21, 1930, in Surry County to George W. and Lula Mae Stanley Marion Sr. Mr. Marion was retired from the N.C. Department of Labor and was co-owner of Climate Control Heating and Cooling. He was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving during the Korean conflict. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by brother Foley Cornelius Marion and sister Beatrice Marion White. Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Betty Ray Marion of the home; three brothers, Robert Cleve Marion of Supply, Jack D. Marion of Dobson and George Marion Jr. of Sevierville, Tenn.; and one sister, Mittie Marion Longworth of Dobson. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church by the Rev. Mike Hall. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mr. Marion will lie in state 30 minutes before the service. The family will receive friends 6:30-8:30 p.m. Monday at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.

McCANN

NORTH WILKESBORO - Mr. Talmage Russell McCann, 65, of Wilkesboro died Saturday, March 3, at the VA Hospital in Salisbury. Mr. McCann was born Dec. 16, 1935, in Wilkes County to Clyde and Curtie Lowe McCann. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean conflict. Surviving are two daughters, Vickie McCann Williams and Tracie McCann Davidson, both of Winston-Salem; his mother of Winston-Salem; one brother, Grant McCann of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Grace Dean Brewer of Westfield and Ruth Jones of Winston-Salem; and two grandchildren. Graveside services with military Rites conducted by VFW Post 1142 will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 7, at Pleasant Home Baptist Church in the Lomax community, with the Rev. Ivan Dameron officiating. The family will be at Miller Funeral Service 6:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday.

MCKNIGHT

LEWISVILLE - Mrs. Dorothy Marie Boggs McKnight, 65, of Lewisville died Saturday, March 3, 2001, at her home. She was born June 6, 1935, in Forsyth County to Henry Isom and Ruby Boggs. Mrs. McKnight was a member of West Bend Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by one brother, David Boggs. She is survived by her husband, Fred Eugene McKnight of the home; two daughters, Patricia Calloway and Brenda Johnson; two sons, Ricky McKnight and Ronnie McKnight; 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; one sister, Nancy Ray; two brothers, R.H. Boggs and Herbert Boggs; and many special friends. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel by the Rev. Ronnie Comer and the Rev. Otis Clampitt. Burial will follow at West Bend Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

MONTGOMERY

Our Lord God has called his son, our brother, father and uncle, Wallace V. Montgomery Sr. to come home. He surrendered unto our Lord March 2, 2001. He was born to the late Verlee and Lucille Montgomery in Gastonia. Left to mourn him are a devoted sister, Patsy (Ronald) Adams; two brothers, William T. Dreher of Washington, D.C., and Donald Montgomery of Charlotte; six children, DeYarda Darby, Kandice Montgomery, Wallace V. Montgomery Jr., Denise Galloway, Valette Darby and Dejeda Byrd, all of Gastonia; three nephews, DeShawn Byrd, Jonathan Adams and William (Barbara) Dreher; three nieces, Rosalind Byrd, Angela Williamson and Tammy (Eric) Sims; stepmother Kathleen Montgomery; 15 grandchildren, four great-nieces and five great-nephews; and a host of family and friends. Services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at Johnson-Howard-Robinson Home of Memory Chapel. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday, one hour before the service. Burial will follow in Westlawn Gardens in Clemmons.

NORMAN

Mr. Elmer Norman, 87, of Toledo, Ohio (formerly of Yadkin County), died Friday, March 2, 2001, at his home. He was born June 6, 1913, in Yadkin County to Gurnie and Lela Vestal Norman. Mr. Norman was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Norman; two brothers, Everett Norman of Yadkin County and Fred Norman of Toledo; and one sister, Mrs. Bernie Norman Pugh of Winston-Salem. Mr. Norman will be buried in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. There will be no formal services. (Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel)

OAKLEY

CLEMMONS - Mr. Robert Wilburn Oakley, 86, of Clemmons died Saturday, March 3, 2001, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice and Palliative Care Center. Mr. Oakley was born in Chicago Heights, Ill., to Mr. Artie Sherman and Martha Dortch Oakley. He retired from Hanes Knitting Co. Mr. Oakley was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Gyneth Billings Oakley, in 1996. Survivors include two sons, Robert Lynn and wife Libby of Winston-Salem and Phillip Keith and wife Terri of Lewisville; two grandchildren, Bryan Christopher of Pfafftown and Ryan Elizabeth of Lewisville; and one sister, Virginia Oakley Schutt of Winston-Salem. A funeral service will be conducted 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at Forsyth Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel, Winston-Salem, with Chaplain Rennie Adcock officiating. The family will receive friends at the home in Rollingreen Village, Clemmons, 7-9 p.m. Monday, March 5. The family wishes memorial contributions be made to Hospice and Palliative Care Center, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

PARKS

Mrs. Doris Anne Parkins Parks, 60, a resident of 4970 Denton Road, died Sunday morning, March 4, 2001, in Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. She was born May 10, 1940, in Haywood County, a daughter of the late Weaver Parkins and Rose Fisher Parkins. Mrs. Parks was a homemaker and a member of Panther Creek Baptist Church in Clyde. On Dec. 12, 1959, she was married to Jerry Parks, who survives, of the home. Also surviving are two daughters, Miss Sharon Parks of Thomasville and Mrs. Penny Lancaster and husband Rev. Jimmy Lancaster of Mocksville; one son, Darwin Parks and wife Laurie of High Point; one sister, Mrs. Madge Klapp of Yuma, Ariz.; six brothers, Earl Parkins and Robert Parkins of Clyde, Joe Parkins of Weaverville, Howard Parkins and Ronnie Parkins of Waynesville and David Parkins of Sylvia; and five grandchildren, Jeremy Phillips, Patrick Lancaster, Jessica Lancaster, Taylor Parks and Nathan Parks. Funeral services will be 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 6, 2001, in Zion United Church of Christ with Rev. Jimmy Lancaster and Dr. Joe D. Coltrane officiating. Mrs. Parks will remain at the J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home until taken to the church 5 p.m. Tuesday to lie in state until the service hour. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. A private graveside service will be held Wednesday in Holly Hill Memorial Park cemetery. The family requests memorials be directed to the American Heart Association, 202 CentrePort Drive, Suite #100, Greensboro, NC 27409.

PETERSON

WALNUT COVE - Mr. James Allen Peterson, 45, of 121 Lakeside Drive in Walnut Cove passed away Thursday, March 1, 2001, at the Wake Forest University/Baptist Medical Center. He was born Oct. 18, 1955, in Winston-Salem to his late parents Eva Peterson and Willie Harvey. He was of the Baptist Faith and attended the local public schools. He was employed at the Graylyn International Conference Center. He leaves to cherish his memories one sister, Cynthia Peterson Sullivan; one dear brother-in-law, Kenneth Ray Sullivan Sr.; nephews Kenneth R. Sullivan Jr. and Kenston Sullivan; devoted aunt Joann P. Sturdivant (James); additional aunts, Priscilla P. McCorkle (James), all of Winston-Salem, Marie Green (June) of Willingboro, N.J., Louise Gibson of Rock Hill, S.C.; special cousin Sandra Peterson of Winston-Salem; and many other cousins, relatives and friends. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 6, 2001, from the Russell Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Dr. Samuel Stevenson officiating. Interment will be in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. PRIDDY

DANBURY - Polly Hawkins Priddy, 71, of 2073 Moorefield Road died Saturday, March 3, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. Her funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Oak Ridge Baptist Church in Sandy Ridge, with burial in the church cemetery. Polly was a lifelong resident of Stokes County. She had retired after 38 years with the Washington Mills Company, later known as the Tultex Corp., and was a devoted member of the Oak Ridge Baptist Church for many years. She was preceded in death by her parents, Everette and Hallie Joyce Hawkins, infant son Phillip, sister Peggy Ann Hawkins and brother James Hawkins. She is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, Curtis T. Priddy, of the home; children John E. Priddy and wife Sandra of Mount Airy, Wanda P. Badgett and husband Tim of King; sister Lois Priddy and husband Junior of Danbury; brothers Jackie Hawkins and wife Ollie Jean of Sandy Ridge and Oren Hawkins and wife Lucy of Troutman; sister-in-law Ruth Hawkins; five grandchildren, Stephen Priddy, Corey Priddy, Megan Priddy, Amy Riggins and Susan Ivey; three stepgrandchildren, Heather Priddy, Joshua Badgett and Susan Badgett; and two great-grandchildren, Allison and Faith. The family will receive friends in the Church Fellowship Hall immediately following the service. She will lie in state at the Ray Funeral Home in Madison until 12 noon Tuesday. Memorials may be made to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103, or the Oak Ridge Baptist Church Fellowship Hall Fund, 4162 Hwy 704 East, Sandy Ridge, NC 27046.

NATHANS CREEK - Mrs. Clyde Lyall Reeves, 86, died Saturday, March 3, 2001, at her residence. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Bob Miller officiating. Burial will follow in the Ashelawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends 6:30-8:30 p.m. Monday, March 5, 2001, at the funeral home. Mrs. Reeves was born in Ashe County on July 9, 1914, to Thomas Lyall and Alice Brown Lyall. She is the widow of Lon Reeves. She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Tom and Evelyn Reeves of Crumpler, Russell and Libby Reeves of West Jefferson and Ralph and Betsy Reeves of Jefferson; and one brother, Glenn Lyall of Jefferson. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Julie Reeves of Mebina, Ohio, Derick Reeves of Galax, Va., Matt Reeves of West Jefferson, Melanie Reeves of Nashville, Tenn., and Melina Cowie of Greensboro; a special niece, Lucy Osborne; and several nieces and nephews. Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to Hospice of Ashe, P.O. Box 421, Jefferson, NC 28640. Boone Family Funeral Home, 2005 Mount Jefferson Road, West Jefferson, is in charge of the arrangements.
