MILHOLEN

HAMPTONVILLE - Mrs. Lucy Adams Milholen, 82, of Arnold Road passed away Wednesday, March 7, 2001, at Hoots Memorial Hospital in Yadkinville.
She was born in Yadkin County to the late Charlie and Ellen Ladd Adams.
Her funeral arrangements are incomplete, with Gentry Family Funeral Service of Yadkinville serving the family.

PATTERSON

CHINA GROVE - Mrs. Suma Verona Isenhour Patterson, 96, formerly of Old Beatty Ford Road died March 6, 2001, at Deal Care Inn, Mooresville after several years of declining health. Mrs. Patterson was born July 7, 1904, in Alexander County to the late Martin Preston Isenhour and Lessie Mae Payne Isenhour. She was a charter member of the North Kannapolis Baptist Church and the Blackwelder Park Baptist Church. Mrs. Patterson was a Sunday school teacher for many years and a member of the Just Older Youth "JOY" group of Blackwelder Park Baptist Church. She loved to grow flowers and work in her yard and garden. She was a devoted wife and mother. Mrs. Patterson was an employee of Cannon Mills for 43 years in the shipping and packing department, retiring in 1980. She was educated in Alexander County schools and moved here in 1925. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, March 9, 2001, at the Blackwelder Park Baptist Church with the Rev. Stanley Welch and Dr. James Strickland officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park, China Grove. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, March 8, 2001, at Whitley's Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Blackwelder Park Baptist Church, 2204 Summit Ave., Kannapolis, NC 28081.

PEDDYCORD

Mrs. Nell Robertson Peddycord, a loving and wonderful lady, died Monday, March 5, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. One of eight children, Nell was born April 13, 1908, to John D. and Dora Brown Robertson in Henry County, Va. She moved to Mayodan at an early age and graduated from Madison-Mayodan High School and later from Draughons Business College, and while attending Draughons she met her husband of 49 years, Harvey G. Peddycord Sr. She worked with her husband in the family business until his death in 1980. She was a member of Crews United Methodist Church since 1957. Surviving are two sons, Harvey G. Peddycord Jr. of Santee, S.C. and Larry E. Peddycord and his wife Linda C. Peddycord of Clemmons and a granddaughter, Leane Alicia Peddycord, whom she loved very much. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her six brothers, Jesse, Roy, Will, Clyde, Watt and Sam Robertson and a sister, Mary Lou Robertson. She had many nieces and nephews, whom she enjoyed having in her home for annual family reunions. The family wishes to thank their special friends, Blanche Gallo, Louise Thomas and Cathy Sublett for their tender care during Mrs. Peddycord's illness. The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Crews United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Wanda Ogden, Pastor, and the Rev. Gene Ball officiating. Mrs. Peddycord will lie in state 30 minutes before the service. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The family requests that memorials be made to Hospice and Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103 or to Crews United Methodist Church Building Fund, 4150 Reidsville Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27101. Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel is serving the family.

PETTERSON

CLEMMONS - Mrs. Marjorie Louise Petterson, 82, of 8150 Dull Road died after a short illness Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was of the Episcopal faith. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Ron and Sandra Petterson of Pfafftown and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel. Burial will be held later in Forest Lawn-Covina Hills cemetery, Covina, Calif.

RAY

SPARTA - Mr. Arvil Howard Ray, 62, of 73 Little River Drive died Tuesday evening, March 6, 2001, at the Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He is survived by his wife, Ellen Halsey Ray of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Teresa and Danny Hurley and Tammy and Danny Wyatt, all of Sparta; four grandchildren, Jessica Wyatt, Brandon Hurley, Beth Hurley and Chance Wyatt, all of Sparta; his mother, Lucy Ray of Havre de Grace, Md.; three brothers, Robert C. Ray of Baltimore, Md., Albert C. Ray of New Providence, Pa., and Russell D. Ray of Port Deposit, Md.; and three sisters, Lenna E. Marshall of Okeechobee, Fla., Laura A. Ragan of Aberdeen, Md., and S. Jean Reeves of Rising Sun, Md. He was preceded in death by his father, Rufus H. Ray, and two brothers, Ralph H. Ray and James C. Ray. Funeral Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, March 9, 2001, at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Fred E. Jennings will officiating. Burial will be in the Sparta cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Thursday evening, March 8, 2001, at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta. Flowers will be appreciated or memorial contributions may be made to the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, c/o the Rev. Fred Jennings, 3613 Old Baywood Road, Galax, VA 24333.

REESE

Dr. Gene Lewis Reese, 73, of 609 Knollwood Drive, Boone, died Wednesday morning, March 7, 2001, at Watauga Medical Center. He was a native of Watauga County, born April 20, 1927, a son of the late James Lewis and Blanche Henson Reese. Dr. Reese was a graduate of Appalachian State University and the first graduating class of the College of Dentistry at the University of North Carolina and was a dentist in Hillsborough and Boone from 1954 until 1993. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy and an active member of the First Baptist Church in Boone. He was an active member of the Boone community in professional, civic, educational and governmental activities. Surviving are his wife, Kathy F. Reese of the home; six sons, Ronnie Reese, Johnny Reese and Boyd Phillips, all of Boone, William Reese of the Beaverdam community, Travis Phillips of Washington state and Evin Phillips of Charlotte; three daughters, Rebekah Adams and husband, Virgil of Wilkesboro, Patricia Yale and husband, Rick of Wilkesboro and Elaine Tedesco and husband, Curt of Morrison, Colo.; two grand-children, Carli Adams of Chapel Hill and Daniel Adams of Wilkesboro and a brother, Freddie Reese of Boone. Funeral services for Dr. Gene L. Reese will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church in Boone, officiated by Dr. Lamar King and Dr. Steven Carriker. Burial will be in Mountlawn Memorial Park & Gardens. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Historic Boone in care of Mrs. Cleo Rhyne, Treasurer, 209 Perkins St., Boone, NC 28607, or First Baptist Church of Boone, 375 W. WATSON

PFAFFTOWN - Robert L. Watson Sr. of 2420 Vienna-Dozier Road died suddenly Tuesday, March 6, 2001, in Gastonia. He was in conference as a consultant for Luwa-Bahnson, the company from which he retired in 1994, after 38 years of service. Mr. Watson was born in Columbus County on Aug. 21, 1932, the son of the late Neil Arthur and Helen White Watson. He is survived by his wife, Frances "Tommie" Hinson Watson of the home; a son, Robert L. Watson Jr. and his wife Kathy of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren, Anna Rachel and Emily Grace Watson of Winston-Salem and Alexander W. Wallace of Atlanta, Ga.; three sisters, Grace W. Saunders of Greensboro, Leona W. Fields of Saint Pauls and Dorothy W. Hemingway of Sun City Center, Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Watson was preceded in death by a daughter, Sherry W. Wallace. Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday by Dr. Charles Edwards at College Park Baptist Church where Robert and Frances have been faithful members for 30 years. Interment will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive visitors at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday. WEST JEFFERSON - Mrs. Clemmie Elizabeth Church Wilcox, 77, died Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at the Watauga Medical Center. Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 8, 2001, at the Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Ken Furches. Burial will follow in the Ashelawn Memorial Gardens cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour before the funeral service. Mrs. Wilcox was born in Watauga County on March 28, 1923, to Wiley Church and Annie Fairchild Church. She was a homemaker. Her parents; her husband, Robert Bruce Wilcox in 1998; and a brother, Walter Church, preceded her in death. MADISON - Ruel Leonard Woods, 83, of 135 Madison-Dillard Road died Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at Morehead Memorial Hospital in Eden. His funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, March 9, 2001, at Grace Baptist Church in Madison. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Leonard was born in Stokes County Jan. 10, 1918, to the late Ruel Clinton and Minnie Dell Robertson Woods. He moved to Rockingham County when he was 5 years old. He retired from Burlington Industries and was also a farmer. He was a World War II veteran having served in the Southwest Pacific with the 350th Coast Artillery Battalion. He was of the Baptist faith and was a life member of the VFW. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Beatrice Bullins Woods of the home; children Henry C. Woods and wife Shirley, Faye W. Hall and R.L. Woods Jr.; grandchildren Kristie W. Payne and husband Scott, Sabrina H. Holland and husband Lee, Brian Woods and wife Crystal and Tracie H. Shreve and husband Roger; eight great-grandchildren all in the Madison-Mayodan area; brothers William Woods and wife Sheila of Pennsylvania, Ed Woods and wife Myrtle, Bill Woods and wife Margaret and T.E. Woods and wife Nannie all of Madison; and sisters Edith Bullins of Tennessee, Louise Gibson of Greensboro, Mildred Mabe and husband Ray and Lila Snyder and husband Ray of Madison and Mary Ruth Bowman and husband Posie of Walnut Cove. ATKINS

MAYODAN - Mrs. Estelle Clark Atkins, 80, of 7700 Highway 135 died Monday, April 2, 2001, at Moses Cone Hospital. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thurs-day, April 5, 2001, at Colonial Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in the Mayodan Municipal cemetery. Mrs. Atkins was born in Henry County, Va. She was the former owner and operator of Atkins Grocery and attended Dan Valley Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond "Hooter" Baxter Atkins and her son, Robert Charles Atkins. Survivors include her daughter, Janet Roberts and husband Charles; grandchildren Charlene Hunley and husband Jay and Chad Roberts and wife Jennifer; great-grandchildren Claire Roberts and Lauren Hunley, all of Madison; and a sister, Evelyn Conway of Bassett, Va. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, April 4, 2001, at Colonial Funeral Home and all other times at the residence. FOWLER

CLEMMONS - Mr. Joseph Monroe Fowler, 86, of 130 Bickerstaff Road died Monday, April 2, 2001, at Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Cen-ter. He was born Nov. 20, 1914, in Forsyth County, the son of the late Jackson Monroe and Flora Elizabeth Craft Fowler. He was of the Methodist faith and was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. with 45 years of service. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 61 years, Ella May Elledge Fowler, and his sister, Mary Nell Fowler Clary. Surviving are two daughters, Jo F. Kelley and husband "Pete" of the home and Lynda F. Snow and husband Ronald of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren, Elizabeth Kelley, Jeanie K. Thomas, Patrick F. Kelley and Mike and Paul Snow; three great-grandchildren; a brother, William F. Fowler and wife Katherine of Wilmington; a sister, Helen Elizabeth Burgin and husband Robert of Asheville; and many special nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 6, 2001, at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 Friday morning immediately before the service at the funeral home. Interment will be at Forsyth Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army of Winston-Salem, P.O. Box 1205, Winston-Salem, NC 27102-1205, or the Winston-Salem Rescue Mission, 717 Oak St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101. He was the greatest dad, grandfather and uncle to his family and he was always ready and able to lend a helping hand to anyone. In the past, he was active in musical organizations in the city, including the Winston-Salem Operetta Association. He was a former bass soloist at Ardmore Methodist Church for 20 years. The family would like to express their appreciation to the doctors and staff of the seventh-floor Cardiac Center at Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center for their care, kindness and compassion during our father's last illness. He was an unassuming man of great integrity and a true gentleman. Well done, Daddy!

HIGH POINT - Mr. Roy Henderson Hayes, 75, of High Point died Tuesday, April 3, 2001, at High Point Regional Medical Center. Mr. Hayes was born March 11, 1926, in Wilkes County to Floyd and Veda Mathis Hayes. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was retired from Adam Millis Co. Mr. Hayes was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Fred Hayes. Surviving are his wife, Mildred June Shore Hayes of the home; a daughter Tammy (Mark) Jordan of High Point; a grandson, Bryce Jordan; four sisters, Mozelle (Ralph) Huff of Elkin, Alice (Ashley) Seaford of Mocksville, Jean (David) Blake of Thomasville and Marie (Jerry) Gallimore of Trinity; three brothers, Bill (Jean) Hayes of Winston-Salem, Bruce (Betty) Hayes of Welcome and Hugh (Sara) Hayes of Mount Airy; and father-in-law Thad F. Shore of Yadkinville. The funeral service for Mr. Hayes will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, April 5, at Gentry Family Funeral Chapel, Jonesville by the Rev. Doug Caldwell and the Rev. Christa Warise. Burial will follow in the Longtown cemetery, Yadkin County. WALKERTOWN - Mr. Ernest Coble Hester, 87, died Monday April 2, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born July 21, 1913, in Forsyth County to Cornelius and Maggie Morris Hester. Mr. Hester was retired from the City of Winston-Salem and was a member of Oak Grove Moravian Church. He was preceded in death by a sister, Irene Johnson and four brothers, Roy Hester, Virgil Hester, Horace Hester and Wilburn Hester. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Lora Fulp Hester of the home; two sons, Delmore Hester and wife Lynn and Earl Hester and wife Helen; a daughter, Sharon Kerr and husband Will all of Walkertown; five granddaughters, Denise Patrick of Atlanta, Ga., Terri Hester of Walkertown, Leslie Hester of Winston-Salem, Kristie Hester of Greenville, N.C. and Melissa Richardson of Walkertown; five great-grandchildren, Whitney Bradley, Quinn Patrick, Robert Bradley, Kylynn Bacos and Cole Richardson; a brother, Harvey Hester of Winston-Salem; and two sisters, Ruth Hart of Pfafftown and Viola Reich of Winston-Salem. A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday April 4, 2001, at Oak Grove Moravian Church Graveyard with the Rev. Norman Byerly officiating. HOWARD

HILLSDALE - Mr. Thomas Ross Howard, 64, went home to be with the Lord on Monday night, April 2, 2001, at his home. He was born Nov. 1, 1936, in Davie County to Thomas Pinkley and Dora Howard Howard. Surviving are six children, Debbie Allison, Thomas W. Howard, Donna Gamble, Cindy Shaver, Pam Hunter and Carla Fields; a sister, Helen Holder of Clemmons; 15 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at the Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel by the Rev. Larry Hollifield. Burial will follow in Mocks United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. JACKS

ASHEVILLE - The Rev. W. Ralph Jacks, 86, of 513 Cokesbury Lane, Givens Estates, died Monday, April 2, 2001, at his home. Mr. Jacks was born in Iredell County and was a son of the late William Marshall and Ethel Andrews Jacks. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Miriam Wilson Jacks who died May 17, 1997. He was a graduate of High Point College and Candler School of Theology at Emory University in Atlanta. He was a former schoolteacher in Iredell and Forsyth counties and was also a former employee of the N.C. Employment Security Commission. After that, he worked with the N.C. Division of the Christian Rural Overseas Program and was a member of the WNC Conference of the United Methodist Church. He served various churches in the conference and was pastor emeritus of Leicester United Methodist Church. He also served on the Burnsville Town Council. He is survived by his wife, Eileen Meadows Jacks; three daughters, Ann Perkins of Asheville, Rosalynde Robertson of Virgilina, Va., and Deborah Allen of Austell, Ga.; and three grandchildren, Julia Allen, Laura Robertson and Jason Allen. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Patton Avenue Chapel of Groce Funeral Home, with the Revs. Oscar Dowdle and Richard Patzfahl and the Rev. Dr. Neil Haynes officiating. Graveside rites will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Tabor Presbyterian Church cemetery near Statesville. His family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home and request that memorials be made to Soaring Eagle Indian College, P.O. Mr. William Kermit Link III of Winston-Salem died Monday, April 2, 2001. He was born Oct. 6, 1976, in Forsyth County to William Kermit and Laurel Hill Link Jr. Mr. Link was a member of Ardmore Baptist Church, an Eagle Scout at New Mount Vernon United Methodist Church and a graduate of Guilford College, where he was a member of the Guilford Christian Fellowship. Surviving are his parents of the home; a sister, Beth Link Taylor and husband Robert of Greensboro; maternal grand-mother, Frances S. Hill of Thomasville; aunts and uncles, Sally Link Blake of Wallburg, Mr. and Mrs. Mac Maxwell of Columbia, S.C., Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Hill of Los Angeles, Calif., and Mr. and Mrs. J.R. Clegg of Houston, Texas; and eight cousins. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, April 5, 2001, at Ardmore Baptist Church by Dr. Bill Ireland and the Rev. Ty Talton. Burial will be in Beulah United Church of Christ cemetery in Welcome. The family will receive fiends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.
