O'NEAL

PILOT MOUNTAIN - Mrs. Mary Allie Arrington O'Neal, 83, of Route 1, Box 426, Pilot Mountain, the widow of Paul Atkinson O'Neal, passed away Tuesday, April 3, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. Mrs. O'Neal was born in Surry County on March 4, 1918, the daughter of the late John Daniel and Zippora Durham Arrington. She was a homemaker and member of Stoney Creek Primitive Baptist Church. Survivors include a son, Paul Gray O'Neal of Pilot Mountain and three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Lois and Benton Flippen of Mount Airy, Vera Thomas of Mount Airy, and Betty and Harvey Smith of Rural Hall. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. O'Neal was preceded in death by a son, James Roscoe O'Neal and three brothers, Burgie Arrington, Roscoe Arrington, and Johnnie Arrington. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 5, 2001, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy conducted by the Elder Vance Jones and Elder Elbert Hunter. Burial will be in the Old Hollow Primitive Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

RANDLEMAN

Judge Charles Henry Randle-man, 79, of 305 S. Park Ave., Mount Airy, the husband of Frances Cockerham Randleman, passed away Tuesday, April 3, 2001, at the Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Judge Randleman was born in Surry County on Sept. 1, 1921, the son of the late Ernest A. and Stella James Randleman. Judge Randleman was a former district attorney of Surry County and surrounding counties, district-court judge, state senator in 1956, was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force having served in World War II, former commander of the VFW, former director of Reeves Community Center, former trustee of Northern Hospital of Surry County, member of the advisory board of the Small Business Administration and member of the First Baptist Church of Mount Airy. Survivors include his wife, Frances Cockerham Randleman; a daughter and son-in-law, Lou and Bob Young of Greensboro; a granddaughter, April Lynn Ashby of Charlotte; a daughter-in-law, Sue Ashby of Winston-Salem; and a brother and sister-in-law, Ernie and Catherine Randleman of Mount Airy. In addition to his parents, Judge Randleman was preceded in death by a son, Robert "Bob" Edward Ashby III; a brother, James J. Randleman; and a sister, Mary Frances Randle-man. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 6, 2001, at First Baptist Church of Mount Airy, conducted by Dr. Roger Gilbert. The Randleman family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the home, 305 S. Park Ave., Mount Airy. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials be directed to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, VA 23058-5216, or the American Cancer Society, 500 E. Moorehead St., Suite 2211, Charlotte, NC 28202. Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy will be serving the Randleman family.

WALKER

ELKIN - Mr. R. Clark Walker, 89, of 500 Johnson Ridge Road, died Tuesday, April 3, 2001, at Hoots Memorial Hospital in Yadkinville. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, April 6, 2001, at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church cemetery by the Rev. Bobby Prevette. Mr. Walker was born in Wilkes County May 23, 1911, to Walter B. and Nancy Pardue Walker. He was a veteran of World War II, a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and was retired from Burlington Industries. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Mathis Walker, in 1988. Surviving are a daughter, Kathy Little of Winston-Salem; a granddaughter, Kristi Boles of Raleigh; and a grandson, Derek Boles of Wilmington. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Kennedy Funeral Home. Condolences to the Walker family may be e-mailed to kennedy@rivercto.net. WESLEY

Mrs. Juanita Campbell Wesley, known to many at "Toots, departed her life at her residence, 750 E. Clemmonsville Circle, Winston-Salem on Saturday, March 31, 2001. She was a lifelong resident of Winston-Salem. She was a graduate of Atkins High School, LaMae Beauty College and Forsyth Technical College. She was a retiree of the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County schools, working most of her life at Parkland High School. She was a member of First Waughtown Baptist Church. She is survived by her son, Talmadge "Ted" Campbell Jr.; her daughter, Tamara J. Staley (Lanyard); a granddaughter, Brandy J. Staley; two grandsons, Lanyard D. Staley Jr. and LaJae Staley; two great-grandsons; two nephews, Mr. Frederick (Theresa) and Mr. Edward (Yvette) Abbott; devoted cousins, Mrs. Gwendolyn (Boots) and Mr. Thomas Lytle; and a devoted friend, Ms. Alice R. Joe. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, April 5, 2001, at First Waughtown Baptist Church with the Rev. Dennis W. Bishop officiating. Interment will be at the Evergreen cemetery. Clark S. WILLIAMS

Mr. Albert Stevenson Williams, 95, of 132 Motor Road passed away Friday, March 30, 2001, at the Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center. He was born in Arkansas City, Ark., on Jan. 1, 1906, to the late Isaac and Marion Whit Williams. He was a retired employee of the City of Greensboro. He is survived by his son, Wesley Williamson (Gwen) of Greensboro; his grandchildren, Deborah Stevenson of Baltimore, Md., Page Motley-Mims (Bobby) of Greensboro, Angela S. Green (Henry) of Winston-Salem, Howard B. Motley of Greensboro, Craig Stevenson of Knoxville, Tenn., and Cheryl Stevenson of Albany, Ga.; five great-great-grandchildren; three loving nieces, Diana Williams-Cotton and Moshay Cotton with whom he made his home, and Gerelene Holloman-Skeen of High Point; a nephew, Sande Tolbert of Atlanta, Ga.; two loving and caring friends, George Crummel and Willie Stevenson; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, April 5, 2001, at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Nelson McCall officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen cemetery. HAMPTONVILLE - Mrs. Edna C. Wood, 91, of 2426 Arnold Road died Monday, April 2, 2001, at Elkin Healthcare. She was born Feb. 2, 1910, to Robert and Minnie R. Cain. Mrs. Wood was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Theodore Wood; a son, Jack Wood; two sisters, Ivey Cain and Irma Cain; and two brothers, Odell Cain and Rossevelt Cain. Surviving are a son, Wendell (Martha) Wood of Traphill; four sisters, Dottie C. Ashborn of Harmony, Lottie C. Johnson of Hamp-tonville, Pauline C. Wooten of Cool Springs and Lucille C. Reavis of Yadkinville; a brother, Johnny Cain of Harmony; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, April 5, 2001, at New Hope Baptist Church, with the Rev. Larry Andrews officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 4, 2001, at Mackie-Reavis Funeral Home in Yadkinville.

ANTHONY

STATE ROAD - Mrs. Attice Edith Butcher Anthony, 81, of Mountain Park Road passed away Friday, May 11, 2001, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. She was born Jan. 10, 1920, in Surry County to the late Troy and Ida Gilley Butcher. Mrs. Anthony was retired from the cloth department of Chatham Manufacturing and attended Mount Pleasant Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Columbus Anthony, on May 16, 1972, her daughter, Barbara Jean Swaim, and three brothers, Edward Butcher, Ralph Butcher and Thomas Irvin Butcher. Surviving are a son, Jimmy Anthony of State Road; three grandchildren, Jeff Layell, Christy (Tommy) Clark and Lynn (Joel) Harris; three great-grandchildren, Jessica Harris, Megan Harris and Caleb Harris; a sister, Mrs. Fairy Zach of Jonesville; two brothers, Elbert (Ila Rose) Butcher of Low Gap and Paul (Helen) Butcher of Thurmond; and several nieces and nephews. Her funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church by the Rev. John Attaway. She will lie in-state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Gentry Family Funeral Service on Little Mountain Road in Jonesville and other times at the home of her son Jimmy Anthony, 167 Klondike Road, State Road.

BOWLES

YORKTOWN, Va. - Lance Corporal Jason Alexander Bowles, 18, of the United States Marine Base, Yorktown, formerly of Country Lane, Winston-Salem, died at 11:45 p.m. Wednesday, May 9, 2001, of an accident in Norfolk, Va. A funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Union Grove Baptist Church, where he was a member, by the Rev. Harold Fletcher. Burial will be at Union Grove Baptist Church cemetery with full military honors. He was born June 3, 1982, in Forsyth County to Cletus O. Bowles and Pam Cook Bowles. He was a 2000 graduate of North Davidson Senior High School and was a member of the ROTC program. He was presently serving in the U.S. Marine Corps as a Lance Corporal in Norfolk. He was preceded in death by his grandparents Thomas M. and Velna Bowles. Surviving are his parents, brothers Eddie Bowles and Dwayne Bowles of Winston-Salem, sister Holly Bowles of Winston-Salem, grandparents Ed and Hazel Cook of King and a host of relatives and friends. The family will receive friends 6:30-8:30 p.m. Monday at Davidson Funeral Home Hickory Tree Chapel and at other times at the home. Memorials may be directed to Union Grove Baptist Church, 2295 Union Grove Road, Lexington, NC 27295. Davidson Funeral Home Hickory Tree Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

ENGLE

MOCKSVILLE - Marvin Phillip "Marty" Engle, 44, of Mocksville passed away Friday, May 11, 2001, at his home. He was born Oct. 15, 1956, in Henderson County to Hoover and Betty Blue Engle. Marty was retired from Steelman Milling Co. in Courtney. He was preceded in death by his mother, Betty B. Engle, and two aunts, Doris Boggs and Barbara Ann McClean. Surviving are his children, Bradley Engle and Amanda Engle, his father, Hoover Engle of Edneyville, his aunt, Elizabeth Engle of Olin, two uncles, Bill Engle of Asheville and William Boggs of Olin; a brother, Mike Engle of Asheville, and a cousin, Pat Waldrop. The family will receive friends 3-4 p.m. Sunday at Gentry Family Funeral Service on Highway 601 N., Yadkinville. The funeral service will be held 4 p.m. Sunday, May 13, 2001, in the Gentry Family Chapel, by Evangelist Keith Jones. A funeral service will also be held 3 p.m. Monday, May 14, 2001, at Mountain Home Baptist Church in Edneyville by the Rev. Chris Pace. Burial will follow in the church cemetery on Monday.

GEARREN

DUGSPUR, Va. - Robert Paul Gearren, 84, of Dugspur passed away May 11, 2001, at Twin County Regional Hospital. Survivors are wife Fay Holder Gearren of Dugspur, daughter and son-in-law Lenora G. and Earl Walters of Broken Arrow, Okla., son and daughter-in-law Robert Lewis and Joann Gearren of Clemmons, sister Ethel G. Gold of High Point, brother Eugene D. Gearren of Winston-Salem, grandchildren Irene W. Porter, Le Anne W. Workman, Robert Earl Walters, Marvin Paul Walters, Steve Gearren, Michael Gearren and Paul Justin Gearren and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday, May 14, 2001, at Fairview Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Jonathan H. Smith and Dr. William A. Gunter officiating. Burial will be in Gardner Memorial cemetery. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Sunday at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel.

HAMPTON

GERMANTON - Mrs. Beulah Elizabeth Tuttle Hampton, 94, of Germanton died Saturday at Walnut Cove Healthcare Center. Mrs. Hampton was born Aug. 25, 1906, in Stokes County to the late Walter and Laura Montgomery Tuttle. She was a homemaker and a member of Palmyra United Methodist Church. Survivors include one daughter, Linda Brown of Harmony; one son, Billy Gray and wife Faye Hampton of Germanton; one sister, Murphy Stephens of Walnut Cove; two brothers, Vernon Tuttle of Stanleyville and Porter Tuttle of Sandy Ridge; seven grandchildren, Terry Hampton, Greg Hampton, Mark Hampton, Judy Flippin, Penny Allen, Cindy Haynes and Keith Smith; five great-grandchildren, Michelle, Christy, Kevin, Ashley and Staci; and two great-great-grandchildren, Gage and Michael. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Burroughs Funeral Home. The Rev. Jack Danley, the Rev. Richard Thomas and the Rev. Darrell Hampton will officiate. Burial will follow in Palmyra United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and at other times at the home of Billy Gray and Faye Hampton.

HANING

HIGH POINT - Mr. Theodore Roosevelt "Ted" Haning, 76, a resident of Orlando Place, died Friday, May 11, 2001, at the High Point Regional Hospital. Ted was born in Newton, Iowa, on April 11, 1925, a son of Oliver Earl and Nina Hodgson Haning. He was a graduate of Colfax High School in Colfax, Iowa, and a Sergeant in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He worked for the City of High Point and then began his career with Pilot Life Insurance Co. in 1957 in group administration. He subsequently transferred to planning where he remained until retirement. During this period he was a member of the Administrative Management Association, serving one year as president. He retired as assistant secretary of Pilot Life. Ted was a member of High Point Friends Meeting, where he served in virtually every capacity of the Meeting. He also was active in the Deep River Quarterly Meeting and the N.C. Yearly Meeting. He was a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity and Hospice of the Piedmont. Ted had a beautiful tenor voice and he sang solos as well as with the Meeting choir. He also sang with several groups including the Deep River Men's Chorus. Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Melita Eldridge Haning of the home; a son, Eldridge Haning and his wife Samantha of Winston-Salem; five brothers, Robert Haning and his wife Janet of Phoenix, Ariz., Edward Haning and his wife Phyllis of Omaha, Neb., James Haning and his wife Roberta of Des Moines, Iowa, Dave Haning and his wife Patricia of Bondurant, Iowa, and Richard Haning and his wife Helen of Newton; two grandchildren, Lynn Jackson and her husband Kenny and Gary Haning; two great-grandchildren, Mary Grace and Katie Lynn Jackson; and sister-in-law Lillie Mae Eldridge. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday in the High Point Friends Meeting by the Rev. Dave Kingrey and the Rev. Victor Murchison. Burial will follow in Mount Vernon United Methodist Church cemetery. The body will remain at the Harold C. Davis Funeral Home until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends at the funeral home 6:30-8 p.m. Sunday. Memorials may be directed to High Point Friends Meeting, P.O. Box 5166, High Point, or to Hospice of the Piedmont, 1801 Westchester Drive, High Point, NC 27262.

FREMONT - George L. "Pete" Hooks III passed away peacefully Friday, May 11, 2001, at his home. He was preceded in death by his mother Reba Parker Hooks. He is survived by his wife Gail S. Hooks of the home, one son, Blake D. Hooks of Shelby, one daughter, April H. Allman and husband Ron of Jeffersonville, Ind., and his father George L. Hooks Jr. of Rocky Mount. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, May 14, 2001, at First Baptist Church of Rocky Mount, with the Rev. V. Grisham officiating. The family will receive friends at the church for one hour following the funeral service and other times at the family home. Burial will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 15, 2001, at Forsyth Memorial Gardens in Winston-Salem. Memorial contributions may be made to Beverly Home Care and Hospice, P.O. Box 1645, Greenville, NC 27835. Arrangements are by Bowling Funeral Home, 661 English Road, Rocky Mount, NC 27804.

JONES

Mr. Charles Ruben Jones, 56, of 2120 Storm Canyon Road passed away Tuesday, May 8, 2001, at the Kate Bitting Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born Aug. 4, 1944, in Reidsville, the son of the late Nina Mae and Eldridge Henry Jones Sr. He was a lifelong resident of Winston-Salem, attended A.H. Anderson High School and was employed with Douglas Battery Co. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Mitchell "Billy" Watkins, Donald R. Jones and William Morris Jones, and two sisters, Dorothy W. Bess and Delores S. Jones. He is survived by one sister, Velma Jones Blackburn of Bronx, N.Y., one brother, Eldridge Henry Jones III of Winston-Salem, one brother-in-law, James C. Bess of Winston-Salem, two sisters-in-law, Cora Watkins of Carthage and June Jones of Bronx, generations of nieces, nephews and cousins, two devoted nieces, Loretta Bess Adams and Hortencia Rice, nephew Willie Bess, nephew-in-law William Rice and a host of other family and friends. Funeral services will be held 4 p.m. Monday, May 14, 2001, from the chapel of the Russell Funeral Home with the Rev. Gwathney Leak officiating. Interment will be in the Evergreen cemetery. The family visitation will be 3:30-4 p.m. Monday at Russell Funeral Home. The family may be contacted at the home of Loretta Bess Adams and Willie Bess, 129 Kilkare Court. KNIGHT

Mr. William Theron Knight, 83, died Friday, May 11, 2001, at Meadowbrook Terrace. He was born Aug. 6, 1917, in Union County to John Thomas and Minnie Louise Knight. He was retired from Salem Steel Co. and was of the Baptist faith. Mr. Knight was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Edith Carroll Knight; a brother, John Thomas Knight; a sister, Edna Campbell; a son, Wayne Knight; and a daughter, Rose Farrington. He is survived by three daughters, Jackie Ragland of Winston-Salem, Diana Clodfelter and husband Mike of Davidson County and Ruby Shouse and husband Wayne of Kernersville. Also surviving are five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Monday, May 14, 2001, in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens by Dr. Ray Hamilton. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.

LEONARD

LEXINGTON - Hulen Ray Leonard, 66, of Lexington died Thursday. A funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Davidson Funeral Home Lexington Chapel. Burial will be in Forest Hill Memorial Park. Surviving are sons Randall Leonard of Winston-Salem, Kevin Leonard, Tim Easter, Steve Easter and Lee Easter of Lexington and Billy Rattler of China Grove; daughters Theresa Matthews of Thomasville and Becky Easter of Henderson; 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; brothers Richard Leonard, Walter Leonard and Charles Leonard of Lexington and Jerry Leonard of Ash; and sister Gladys L. White of Welcome. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Sunday at Davidson Funeral Home Lexington Chapel and other times at the home of his son Kevin Leonard, 1177 N. County Home Road.
