MOCK

RALEIGH - Ruth Butner Mock, 84, of Raleigh died Thursday, May 10, 2001, at Rex Healthcare, Raleigh. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday, May 14, 2001, at Raleigh Moravian Church by the Rev. Craig Troutman. Interment will follow at 3 p.m. in God's Acre, Bethania. Mrs. Mock was born Dec. 2, 1916, in Bethania, the daughter of the late Leon Thaddeus and Bertha Fitzgerald Butner. She started school in Bethania and then the Old Town School. Following her graduation from Old Town School she attended secretarial school and studied art privately for one year. On Feb. 6, 1945, she married Fred H. Mock and worked in the office at R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. until she and her husband moved from Winston-Salem. Mrs. Mock had lived in Raleigh since 1965, having moved from Charlotte. Her hobbies and interests centered around art, playing bridge, gardening and meeting people. She was a lifetime member of Bethania Moravian Church where she sang in the choir. She was also a member of Raleigh Moravian Church and had been very involved in church work. Mrs. Mock was preceded in death by her sister Frances Butner Hoover. Surviving are her husband Fred H. Mock of the home, a sister, Martha Butner Stocks of Spartanburg, S.C., and two nieces, Sara Hoover Hamm of Atlanta, Ga., and Diane Stocks High of Greenville, S.C. The Mock family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday, May 13, 2001, at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 1701 E. Millbrook Road, Raleigh. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Raleigh Moravian Church Building Fund, 1816 Blue Ridge Road, Raleigh, NC 27607, or the Bethania Moravian Church Building Fund, Bethania, NC 27010.

MYERS

HAMPTONVILLE - Mr. Lee P. Myers, 78, of Blankenship Road passed away Saturday, May 12, 2001, at Autumn Care of Mocksville. He was born Jan. 2, 1923, in Wilkes County to the late E.J.C. and Sally Walker Myers. Mr. Myers was preceded in death by his first wife, Marie Gatton Myers. Surviving are his wife, Marie Riggs Myers of the home, two sons, James Myers of Greensboro and Preston Myers of Yadkinville, two daughters, Brenda Cline of Yadkinville and Jennifer Mitze of Pine Hill, N.M., seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and two sisters, Ruth Reavis of Hamptonville and Dicie Renegar of Harmony. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Monday at Sandy Springs Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. Gentry Family Funeral Service of Yadkinville is serving the Myers family.

NEWMAN

RALEIGH - Dr. Stewart A. Newman, 94, longtime teacher and minister, died Thursday, May 10, 2001, at Rex Hospital after a short period of declining health. He had taught in public schools, colleges and seminaries for over 50 years. He was born Jan. 26, 1907, in Jermyn, Texas, the first child of Willie Elnora Bayless Newman and Virgil Albert Newman. He went through the 10 years of Jermyn schools then finished an extra year while living with an aunt and uncle in Childress, Texas. He then attended Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, dropping out during one year to begin his teaching career in Medina County, Texas, near San Antonio. He graduated from Hardin-Simmons in 1929. He returned to his home county to serve as principal and science and math teacher at Bryson, Texas, High School. Also on the faculty was a beginning English teacher, Sara Knupp. They became engaged on Columbus Day 1929 and were married Aug. 15, 1930, at her home in Arlington, Texas. He and "Sug," as he lovingly always called her, were married 58 years, until her death Aug. 1, 1988. He heeded a call to the ministry and was ordained by the Jermyn Baptist Church while still a student. While teaching at Bryson, he preached at several nearby churches. He entered Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, where he earned the Bachelor of Divinity, Master of Theology and Doctor of Theology degrees. He joined the faculty at Southwestern, teaching and serving as registrar until 1952 when he joined the faculty of the newly organized Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest. In 1966 he became professor of philosophy at Campbell College, Buies Creek, then in 1974 moved to Meredith College in Raleigh. He retired in 1986 but continued to teach a class of senior citizens in Raleigh. Many of his students at all levels became close friends. He was honored by Hardin-Simmons with a Doctor of Divinity degree and was named an honorary alumnus of Baylor University. He served as pastor of his home church at Jermyn for 15 years and for several years at nearby Loving, Texas, while teaching in Fort Worth. In North Carolina he served as interim pastor of a number of churches, including Hobgood, Fair Bluff, Rocky Mount and Wendell, expanding his circle of friends. As a liberal Baptist he wrote hundreds of letters and several articles on the estrangement of moderate and conservative Baptists. He also wrote a book on the life and teachings of his seminary friend and mentor Dr. W.T. Connor and another on the history and philosophy of Baptists, A Free Church Perspective. His wife, parents and a brother, Douglas, preceded him in death. He is survived by three sons, Charles V. Newman and wife Shirley of Bermuda Run, Dr. S. Albert Newman and wife Corinne of Milford, Conn., and Dr. Harvey K. Newman and wife Patricia of Atlanta, Ga. His beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren are Ann Coble and husband Brad and sons Christopher and Casey of Midlothian, Va., Charles Newman Jr. and wife Cynthia Gurganus of Durham, Martha Newman and husband Peter and son Cody of Arapaho, Matthew Newman and wife Kristine and daughter Katherine of Albany, N.Y., Stewart E. Newman of New Haven, Conn., and Nathan Newman of Tuscaloosa, Ala. Also surviving are a sister, Bessie Pauline Reeves, and a brother, Virgil Bayless Newman, both of Graham, Texas, and a number of nieces and nephews. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday, May 14, 2001, at First Baptist Church of Raleigh where he was a member, with Dr. Randall Lolley and Dr. Daniel Day presiding. Burial will be at the Seminary cemetery, Wake Forest. The family will receive friends at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, St. Mary's Street, Raleigh, 7-9 p.m. Sunday, May 13, 2001. Memorials may be made to any of the many churches he served or to C.A.R.E.

RICHARDSON

MOCKSVILLE - Mr. James Everette Richardson, 49, of Gawain Way passed away unexpectedly Friday, May 11, 2001. He was born in Davidson County on July 25, 1951, to Everette A. and Ruth Grubbs Richardson. He had worked for Dana Corp. in Statesville for 20 years, served our country in the U.S. Army and was of the Baptist faith. In addition to his mother he is survived by a daughter, Melissa Richardson of Mocksville; two sisters, Linda R. Anderson and husband Larry of Clemmons and Nancy Ward and husband Gene of Mocksville; a grandson, Brandon Richardson of Mocksville; and a devoted friend, Sybil Ballantine. A graveside service will be held 4 p.m. Sunday, May 13, 2001, with the Rev. Norman Frye officiating, at Fork Baptist Church cemetery. The family requests memorials be made to Fork Baptist Church Building Fund, 3140 U.S. Hwy 64 East, Mocksville, NC 27028. Davie Funeral Service LLC, 416 Valley Road, Mocksville, NC 27028 will be serving the Richardson family.

SMITH

Mr. Jack Javan Smith, 80, of Winston-Salem died Thursday, May 10, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Smith was born Dec. 12, 1920, to the late Walter Lee and Hattie Reid Smith. He lived all of his life in Winston-Salem, where he was educated in the public schools. He was a former member of the Administrative Management Society and was honored with the Boss of the Year Award. A member of First Baptist Church for more than 50 years, he served on the board of deacons, was a member of the church choir for 33 years and was a member and a former president of the Enabler Sunday school class. In addition, Mr. Smith was currently a member of the Twin City Kiwanis Club, a member of the Pinebrook Country Club for more than 30 years and a World War II Air Force veteran. He retired as office manager and corporate secretary from Frank Vogler & Sons Inc. after 38 years of service. Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Thelma Moore Smith of the home; his four children, Pamela S. Compton and husband Keith A. Compton of Clemmons, Brad Smith and wife Jerri, also of Clemmons, Lynne S. Marschke and husband Keith of San Diego, Calif., and Marc J. Smith and wife Pamela of Lewisville; and his seven grandchildren, Courtney and Blair Smith of Clemmons, Jonathan A. Compton of Clemmons, Julianne and Jenna Smith of Lewisville and Mary Kate and Jack Bryan Marschke of San Diego, Calif. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church, with Dr. David Hughes and the Rev. Henry Stokes officiating. Interment will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 501 W. Fifth St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101.

THOMASSON

HAMPTONVILLE - Leon Furches Thomasson, 75, Yadkin County civic leader and businessman of Twin Holly Farm, Hamptonville, died May 11, 2001, in Elkin. He was born in Winston-Salem on Feb. 5, 1926, the son of Joseph Stowe and Irma Barron Thomasson. On Sept. 20, 1943, he married Beatrice Dickerson of Hamptonville, who survives. They had four children, two sons, Wayne (Sybil) of Hamptonville and Jody (Joy) of Advance, and two daughters, Ava (Ed) Lewandowski of Schererville, Ind., and Anita (Jim) Kernodle of Charlotte, and had ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Elizabeth Ann Thomasson (Howard) Tucker of Hamptonville, a brother, Roy Lynn Thomasson (Elena) of Elkin and Potomac Falls, Va., and a sister-in-law, Dorcas (Dale) Thomasson of Hamptonville. His older brother, Dale Wetzel, preceded him in death in 1982. A civic leader and businessman in the Windsor's Cross Roads community all his life, Leon always took an active interest in his community, helping friends and neighbors whenever he could. He was a founding member of the Windsor's Cross Roads Grange, Community Development Association and the Windsor's Cross Roads Ruritan Club, receiving the Ruritan Club's Lifetime Achievement Award in 1995. He also served as president of the Tri-County Medical Park and had long been active in expanding medical services for the area. He was first appointed to and then later elected to the Yadkin County Board of Education, serving for 18 years, 16 years as chairman. During his term, two new high schools were built. He had also served on the Board of Directors of Central Carolina Bank in Yadkinville and as president of the Yadkin Merchants Association. An active and avid Democrat, he was formerly chairman of the Yadkin County Democratic Party and local campaign leader for state and local Democratic officials and candidates. In 1984 he was the Democratic nominee for the N.C. State Senate in the 26th District. Leon was a member of Zion Baptist Church, served on the Board of Deacons as chairman and taught Sunday school. He graduated from West Yadkin High School and studied architecture at N.C. State University. He spent his life on Twin Holly Farm as a farmer, diaryman and businessman, operating Farm Service Center, a farm machinery and milk transport business in Hamptonville. A memorial service in thanksgiving for his life will be held 4 p.m. Sunday, May 13, 2001, at Zion Baptist Church in Hamptonville. Memorials may be made to the Zion Baptist Church Building Fund, the St. Paul United Methodist Church Building Fund or Northern Surry Hospice Inc., 1326 N. Main St., Mount Airy, NC 27030. Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin is in charge of the arrangements.

WADE

Mr. Henry Leland Wade, a.k.a. "Wade," formerly of 1318 E. Third St., passed Wednesday morning at the Golden Lamb Rest Home. He was born May 17, 1918, to the late Mr. Leland Wade and Mrs. Lillie Wade Hall in Lancaster, S.C. Wade was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Mrs. Mary H. Thompson, and four brothers, Mr. Clarence Hall, Mr. McCrorey Hall, Mr. Willie Hall and Mr. James T. Hall Sr. He leaves to cherish his memories four sisters, Mrs. Alma H. (George) Clement and Mrs. Madie H. Caldwell of the city, Mrs. Lillie C. Gibson of Rochester, N.Y., and Mrs. Florence Brown of San Diego, Calif.; two brothers, Mr. Marion (Helen) Hall of the city and Mr. Vernon (Shirley) Hall of Detroit, Mich.; a devoted brother-in-law, Mr. Robert Thompson of the city; one aunt, Mrs. Nannie Spraggins of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. The family would like to thank the operators and staff of the CRT Golden Lamb Rest Home Inc. for all of the loving care that they showed to our loved one. Services will be held 1:30 p.m. Monday, May 14, 2001, in the chapel of Clark S. Brown & Sons Funeral Home. The Rev. Louis Werts will officiate. Interment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. Family visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Clark S. Brown & Sons Funeral Home is in charge of services and arrangements.

WASHINGTON

Mr. William Marion "Buck" Washington, 59, of 4515 Whittier Road departed this life on May 9, 2001. Mr. Washington was born Nov. 14, 1941, in Rural Hall to Irene (Poindexter) and Foster Washington. He was a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church. His parents; a son, Darold Washington; and a sister, Carrie Lee Hauser, preceded him in eternal life. Of the home, he leaves to honor his memory his wife, Dwyanette "Dee"; a son, Cornelius "C.J."; a daughter, Tasmin Washington; and a devoted nephew, Michael Hauser. He is also cherished by sons, Antwan Washington of Houston, Texas, Tam Washington of Atlanta, Ga. and Gary Washington of Winston-Salem and a daughter, Sandra Amos of Winston-Salem. In addition, Mr. Washington is survived by devoted siblings, Frances Watson, Jackie Greene and Carl Washington of the city and Winifred Jackson of Washington, D.C. He is also survived by a loving great-aunt, Connie Douthit; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a host of other faithful family members and friends. Memorial services for Mr. Washington will be held at 12 noon Monday, May 14, 2001, at Piney Grove Baptist Church. The visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Evergreen cemetery.

ARMSTRONG

Mr. William Franklin "Bill" "Frankie" Armstrong, 75, of Winston-Salem, passed away at his home Saturday, March 10, 2001. Mr. Armstrong was born in Matagorda, Texas, Dec. 19, 1925, to C.W. Eddie and Mattie Simpson Armstrong. Mr. Armstrong was a member of Augsburg Lutheran Church, a member of Masonic Lodge # 680 in Jacksonville as well as a member of Charlotte Oasis Shriners Temple and a member of the Huntington, W.Va., V.F.W. Mr. Armstrong was retired from the United States Navy with the rank of Chief Hospital Corpsman; he served his country from March 1942 to August 1964. He then went to work for Knollwood Hall Nursing Home in 1964 as administrator. He then went to Presbyterian Manor Nursing Home in Huntington as administrator until his retirement in 1989. Survivors include his loving wife of 29 years, Phyllis S. Armstrong of the home; two sons, Mr. Tom Armstrong and wife Peggy of Alpharetta, Ga., and Mr. James Armstrong of Huntsville, Ala.; stepsons Mr. Brad O'Dale Smith and Mr. Alan Andrew Smith, both of Winston-Salem; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; a grandchild whom he considered as his own son, Mr. Bradley O'Dale Smith of Winston-Salem; and sister Mrs. Anne Blanton of Texas. A funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 13, 2001, at Northwoods Baptist Church, with the Rev. James Thompson officiating. The body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow at Gardens of Memory, with full military honors provided by Inspector Instructor Staff of the U.S. Marine Corps, and Masonic Rites will be performed as well. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Monday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.

BOOSE

Mrs. Margaret Hensley Boose, 94, died Friday, March 9, 2001, at Silas Creek Manor. She was born July 31, 1906, in Bedford County, Va., to William and Mary Davis Hensley. Mrs. Boose was a member of Wachovia Arbor Moravian Church. Preceding her in death were her husband, Fred T. Boose, and her son Stephen Boose. Survivors include her son Thomas Boose of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, Lorain Boose and Thomas Boose; one great-grandson, Michael Anthony Boose; one brother, Lloyd Hensley of Tomball, Texas; one sister, Frances Phillips of Baltimore, Md.; and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at the Wachovia Arbor Moravian Graveyard, 2 p.m. Monday, March 12, 2001, with Mr. Patrick Winfree officiating.

COOK

CLEMMONS - Mrs. Nellie "Nell" Elizabeth Cook, 77, a devoted wife, mother and grandmother of Clemmons was called home Friday, March 9, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born in Kannapolis on May 21, 1923, to J.W. and Clara Corn Cashion. She was a member of Clemmons First Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school and was director and Bible study leader of WMU. She served on the board of the Christian Women's Club and was a charter member of the Eastern Star in Clemmons. She was preceded in death by her husband J. Frank Cook Sr., her parents and one brother, Ernest Cashion. Surviving are one daughter, Jane Cook Harris and husband Patrick of Clemmons; two sons, James "Jim" F. Cook Jr. and wife Jane Carroll of Concord, and David W. Cook and wife Cassie of East Bend; six grandsons and two granddaughters; one brother, Howard Cashion and wife R.V. of Kannapolis; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 14, 2001, at Clemmons First Baptist Church, by the Rev. Samuel Murphy. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel. Memorials may be made to Clemmons First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 279, Clemmons, NC 27012.

CROUSE

RURAL HALL - Mrs. Pamela Lynn Bowen Crouse, 40, died at her home March 7, 2001. A native of Fairfax County, Va., she was born May 29, 1960, to Charlie Roy and Wanda Goforth Bowen. Mrs. Crouse was a member of Mizpah Moravian Church in Rural Hall. She was a 1978 graduate of North Forsyth High School and was a 1983 graduate of the UNC Chapel Hill School of Nursing. She is survived by her husband of 17 years, Allen Crouse; three sons, Matthew, Andrew Tyler and Bradley Crouse, all of the home; her mother and stepfather, Wanda and Benny Davis of Columbus, Ohio; a sister and brother-in-law, Debbie and Paul Hazell of Columbus; her mother and father-in-law, Mareia and Jerry Crouse of Advance; two sisters-in-law, Michelle Crouse and Tonya Overby; also two nephews and one niece. A funeral service will be conducted at Mizpah Moravian Church at 11 a.m. today, March 12, 2001, officiated by the Rev. Hal Cole and the Rev. Jack T. Nance. Burial will follow in the church graveyard. Memorials may be made to Mizpah Moravian Church 3195 Mizpah Church Road, Rural Hall, NC 27045, or Brenner Children's Hospital, Medical Center Blvd., Winston-Salem, NC 27157.

DULL

MOCKSVILLE - Mrs. Coleen Howell Dull, 68, of NC Hwy 801 North died Saturday morning at Forsyth Medical Center. A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in Center United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dianne Marsden officiating. Interment will be in Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives on Wednesday at the church immediately following the service. They request memorials be considered for the Building Fund of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, c/o Mrs. Betty West, 3532 NC Hwy 801 North, Mocksville, NC 27028, or to the Research Fund of the American Cancer Society, 622 Forsyth Medical park, 1900 S. Hawthorne Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. Mrs. Dull was born in Yadkin County, July 24, 1932, to the late Willie Sanford and Ellie Hollar Howell and was retired with, over 25 years of service, from AT&T. She was a longtime member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, where she was active with the United Methodist Women and served as their treasurer. She was also chairperson of the Church History Committee. She was a graduate of the Mocksville High School class of 1950. Mrs. Dull was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Vestal Dull, who died in 1976, and also by a sister, Maxine Hodgson. Surviving are her daughter Mrs. Buddy (Marcheta) Williams of Mocksville; one son, Vestal Wayne Dull, also of Mocksville; six grandchildren, Adam Hill and wife Haley, Emily Burroughs and husband Bart, Clark Williams and wife Kristy, Justin Dull, Ryan Dull and Brandy Rogers; two great-grandchildren, Tatum Williams and Kassidy Williams; four brothers, Harley Howell and wife Betty, Kenneth Howell and wife Julia, Gary Howell and wife Glenda, all of Mocksville, and Harry Lee Howell and wife Marlene of Harmony; and one brother-in-law, Richard Hodgson of Spring Lake. Mrs. Dull will always be remembered as a very devoted mother, grandmother and friend who enjoyed spending quality time with her family. Eaton Funeral Home is serving the family of Mrs. Dull.

ERDMAN

OAK RIDGE - Thelma Ruth Erdman, 86, died Sunday, March 11, 2001, at Moses H. Cone Hospital, Greensboro. She was born Jan. 7, 1915, at Grand Rapids, Mich., the daughter of Harry and Margaret Hull. Mrs. Erdman was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church of Kernersville. She is survived by her sons Michael Hull Erdman of Atlanta, Ga., and Robert J. Erdman II and his wife Deanna of Oak Ridge; her daughter Jeannie Marie Chomiak and husband Robert of Congers, N.Y.; 20 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren. A Mass of Resurrection will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 13, 2001, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Kernersville. The family will receive friends 1-2 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Arrangements are by Hanes-Lineberry Pierce Chapel, Kernersville.

LINDLEY

Miss Shanon Annette Lindley, 21, of Winston-Salem passed away Saturday, March 10, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was born Oct. 17, 1979, to Mr. Jimmy Parks and Cathy Lindley Ransome in Forsyth County. Survivors are mother and stepfather Mrs. Cathy Lindley Ransome and Charles Ransome of Winston-Salem, father Jimmy Parks of Kernersville, brothers Christopher, Daniel and Tony Ransome, all of Winston-Salem, half-brother Junior Parks and sister Miss Rhonda Ransome of Winston-Salem. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is serving the family.
