MONEY

HAMPTONVILLE - Mrs. Helen Lewis Money, 94, died Sunday, March 11, 2001, at Yadkin Nursing Center. Mrs. Money was born May 21, 1906, to Levi Carson and Leanora Bingham Lewis of Statesville. Helen graduated from Eastern Carolina Teachers College and taught in the Davie and Yadkin County school systems. She was an active member of Asbury Methodist Church in Hamptonville, the Yadkin County Library and numerous farming and community projects. Fred Money of Yadkin County, to whom she was married 57 years, preceded her in death. She is survived by a daughter, Barbara M. Royal and husband James E. Royal of Winston-Salem, and a son, Richard L. Money and wife Marie C. Money of Greensboro. She also has three grandsons, Richard L. Money Jr., Donald W. Money and Michael S. Money; one great-granddaughter, Jessica Winter Money; and many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Monday, March 12, at Gentry Family Funeral Home, Hwy 601 North, Yadkinville. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 13, at Asbury Methodist Church, with the Rev. Daniel Outen and the Rev. Patricia Lewis presiding. Burial will follow in the Asbury Church cemetery. Memorials may be made to Asbury Methodist Church, Asbury Church Road, Hamptonville, NC 27020, or to the charity of your choice.

O'NEAL

Mrs. Cynthia Irene Terry O'Neal, 49, of 186 Driftwood Lane passed away Thursday, March 8, 2001, at the Wake Forest University/Baptist Medical Center. Cynthia was a native of Winston-Salem, born July 11, 1951, the daughter of Louise Covington Terry and the late James H. Terry. She was a graduate of North Forsyth High School, attended New Covenant Ministries and was last employed at City Nursing as a nurse's assistant. She is survived by two daughters, Taundra White and Sheleta Walker (Gregory) both of Winston-Salem; seven grandchildren, Imari White, Rodney Boyd Jr., Kenyare King, JaQuade Walker, Jerrick Walker, Ariel Walker and Aryanna Walker, all of Winston-Salem; her dear mother, Louise Covington Terry; three brothers, Theopilia Covington (Ruby), Donald Terry and James Terry Jr. (Denise), all of Winston-Salem; five sisters, Adriane Terry, Rhonda Terry and Narissa Terry, all of Detroit, Mich., and Danita Terry and Brandaline Terry, both of Winston-Salem; two uncles, Leroi Terry (Martha) and William Terry, both of Winston-Salem; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 13, 2001, from the First Waughtown Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dennis Bishop officiating. Interment will be in the Gardens of Memory in Walkertown. The family visitation will be 1-1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the church. The family may be contacted at the home of her mother, 820 Charles Court. (Russell)

ROBBINS

GREENVILLE - Mrs. Virginia Chapin Robbins, 72, died Saturday, March 10, 2001. A memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Among the survivors are daughter Laura R. Weigand and husband John of Winston-Salem and granddaughter Katie Weigand of Winston-Salem. The family will receive friends at the church fellowship hall following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Building Fund, 401 E. 4th St., Greenville, NC 27858. Arrangements are by Wilkerson Funeral Home and Crematory.

SALMON

KING - Mr. S. Eugene Salmon, 68, of King died Saturday, March 10, 2001. He was born Oct. 5, 1932, in Roanoke, Va., to the Rev. Willie Brown and Lillie Mae Laprade Salmon. Eugene was a state-licensed contractor and was the owner-operator of Salmon Construction Company. He was a founding member of King Harvest Temple Church of God. He served as chairman of the building committee and was the construction supervisor when the church was built in 1976. Along with being the adult Sunday school teacher for King Harvest Temple Church of God, he was a member of the Pastor's Council, the chairman of the Men of Action Council, a member of the Layman's Board and was the director of the Royal Ranger's Boys Club. He and wife, Ann, were selected as Layman Couple of the Year. Eugene won first place in the woodworking division at the annual Young at Heart Convention in Gatlinburg, Tenn., and had been inducted into the state and international Hall of Christian Excellence for the Church of God. Along with his parents he was preceded in death by four brothers, Jim, Charles, Dickie and Bob Salmon, and a half-sister, Margaret Everette. Surviving are his wife, Ann Salmon of the home; two daughters, Deborah (Tim) Koch and Becky (Willis) Smith, both of Roanoke; two sons, Brian E. (Lisa) Salmon of King and Keith E. (Michelle) Salmon of Raleigh; four sisters, Rebecca (Hammond) Williams of Roanoke, Doris (Raymond) Lawson of Winston-Salem, Ruth Ann Mitchell of King and Jane Parks of Plantation, Fla.; one brother, the Rev. Daniel (Judy) Salmon of King; 11 grandchildren, Mandy, Daniel, Aaron, Ethan, Christopher, Edward, Athena, Glenn, Jason, Erick and David; and four great-grandchildren, Michelle, Tommy, Skylar and Whitney. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 13, 2001, at Slate Funeral Home in King, with the Rev. Daniel Salmon and the Rev. Forrest Evans officiating. Burial will follow in the Gardens of Memory cemetery in Walkertown. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. this evening at the King Harvest Temple Church of God on Newsome Road in King. Memorials may be made to King Harvest Temple Church of God, Building Fund, P.O. Box 663, King, NC 27021.

SCOTT

YADKINVILLE - Mr. Buford Buron Scott, 66, passed away Saturday, March 10, 2001, at Hoots Memorial Hospital in Yadkinville. Mr. Scott was born May 31, 1934, in Yadkin County to the late Herman B. and Minnie P. Leamon Scott. Mr. Scott was a retired machine operator and a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was preceded in death by a son, Terry Wayne Scott, a sister, Sara Stokes, and a brother, J.D. Scott. Mr. Scott is survived by his wife, Ann Spease Reed Scott of the home; and three daughters, Vickie Scott of the home, Dawn (Bob) Davis of Winston-Salem and Candy (Roger) Miller of East Bend. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Brandy Davis, Carrie Davis, Bobby Davis and Zack Hargett; one sister, Edith Shore of Goldsboro; and two brothers, Wade Scott and Roger Scott, both of East Bend. Services for Mr. Scott will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 13, 2001, at Union Cross Friends Meeting, with the Rev. Jerry Gibbons and the Rev. Johnny Shore officiating. The body will lie in state from 12:30 until time for the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Monday, March 12, 2001, at Huff Funeral Home in East Bend. SOWDERS

MURRELLS INLET, S.C. - Jack D. Sowders, 53, of Murrells Inlet, S.C., died Saturday March 10, 2001, at Georgetown Memorial Hospital. Mr. Sowders was born Aug. 4, 1947, in Stanford, Ky., a son of J.T. and Dorothy Sowders. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving his country from February 1965 to December 1967. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnamese Campaign Medal with Device, two overseas Service Bars and Expert Badge. He was manager of Voyager's View Marina and a commercial fisherman and shrimper, participating in various fishing tournaments. Surviving in addition to his parents of Stanford are his wife Pam Sowders of Murrells Inlet; three sons, Joey Sowders and wife Nikki of Perryville, Ky., Jeff Sowders and wife Vanessa of Stanford, and George Sowders of Welcome; one brother, Jim Sowders and wife Faith of Jacksonville; six grandchildren, two nieces and three nephews; two special little friends, Kelsey and Kaitlin Glover; and many dear friends who loved him. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday from Goldfinch Beach Chapel, Murrells Inlet, with Mr. Barry Brown officiating. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. SPARGER

MOUNT AIRY - Mr. Marvin Franklin Sparger, 80, of 314 Franklin St., Mount Airy, passed away Sunday, March 11, 2001, at Hugh Chatham Nursing Center in Elkin. Mr. Sparger was born in Surry County May 24, 1920, son of the late Marvin Haywood Sparger and Lucy Emma Merritt Sparger. Mr. Sparger was retired as owner and operator of Sparger Insurance Agency, was a member of the Flat Rock Ruritan Club and Mt. Airy Kiwanis Club and member of Central United Methodist Church. Surviving are two nieces, Nancy Sparger Barker of Abingdon, Va., and Sarah Sparger Staley of Marion, Va.; two nephews, H. Merritt Sparger Jr. of Salem, Va., and John W. Sparger of Marion, Va., In addition to his parents, Mr. Sparger was preceded in death by a brother, Haywood M. Sparger, and by one nephew, Robert H. Sparger. The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 13, 2001, at Central United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Phillip Cole, with burial to follow in Oakdale cemetery. The family will receive friends in the church parlor 10 a.m. Tuesday until the hour of funeral service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the Sparger Family.

THOMAS

KERNERSVILLE - Mrs. Lillie Mae Myers Thomas, 79, of 122 Dillon St. in Winston-Salem died Friday, March 9, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mrs. Thomas was born in Yadkin County, a daughter of the late Wylie and Fannie Wilkinson Myers. Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Carol and Buford Sadler of Winston-Salem and Helen and Dan McCarty of Greensboro; four sons and their wives, Johnny and Sharon Thomas, Bill and Patsy Thomas, Phillip and Donna Thomas, all of Winston Salem, and Jack Thomas of Walnut Cove; and seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Woodland cemetery by the Rev. Frank Shumate. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Monday at the Hayworth-Miller-Cain Funeral Home.

CASTEVENS

KERNERSVILLE - Mary Martha Castevens died May 3, 2001, at Britthaven of Kernersville. She was born in Freemont on May 12, 1910, the daughter of Luther Hendrix and Nita Blalock Mumford. She was preceded in death by her husband, E.G. Castevens, and a great-granddaughter, Samantha Biles. She is survived by her daughter, Martha Biles and husband Fred; a grandson, Will Biles and wife Donna; granddaughters Regan Loflin and husband Phillip, Erin Carrera and husband Mike; seven great-grandchildren; and five nieces and nephews. Martha moved to Kernersville in 1952 with her family and became a member of Main Street United Methodist Church, where she was involved in many church activities. She was a nurse all her life and will be remembered by many in Kernersville as the nurse for Dr. Joyce Reynolds. Her career took her to N.C. Baptist Hospital, where she was instrumental in starting the hospital's first intensive-care ward. Retiring from Baptist, she became the nurse for Salem College and Academy. She also traveled with the East Forsyth Madrigals and the UNC choir as their nurse. Martha's hobbies were gardening and needlework. When she retired from nursing, she opened the Needle Nook in Kernersville. She was a loving mother, grandmother and a compassionate nurse, and friend to many folks. Her family wishes to thank the staff of Britthaven, the Shepherd's Center and the many friends in her church and community for the love and kindness shown to Martha and her family. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Samantha's Foundation (for SIDS research), Box 2243, Blowing Rock, NC 28606, the Shepherd's Center, P.O. Box 2044, Kernersville, NC or Main Street United Methodist Church, 306 S. Main St., Kernersville 27284. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Main Street United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends at the church following the service and other times at the home of her daughter, Martha, at 122 Hepler St., Kernersville.

CHURCH

JEFFERSON - In loving memory of Helen Colvard Badger Church, funeral services will be observed at the Jefferson United Methodist Church Sunday, May 6. Burial will follow in the Colvard-Bower cemetery. Mrs. Church was born Nov. 10, 1908, to Christopher C. Colvard and Virginia Witherspoon Colvard in the Orion Community of Ashe County. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Brucie and Mary Lou Colvard and three brothers, Fred Neal Colvard, William Glenn Colvard and Lynch L. Colvard. She was the widow of Mr. Oren Badger and Mr. Stanford Church. Mrs. Church's long active life was spent on the Colvard family place at Orion where she was a devoted member of the Orion Methodist Church. For the past five years she was a resident of the Segraves Care Center where she died on May 3. Mrs. Church is survived by two nieces, Edith Colvard Crutcher and Annabel Colvard Harrill and a nephew, Ralph Neal Colvard. She was the beloved great-aunt of Sandra Koen Mitchell, George Koen, Jeff, Eric and Neal Hunter and Kevin Colvard. Great-great-nieces and nephews surviving Mrs. Church number eight, with an additional nephew predeceasing her. She is also survived by six great-great-great-nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to the Colvard-Bower cemetery fund, in care of Mark Bower, Box 1502, Jefferson, NC 28694. The care of the family cemetery was a lifelong effort of Mrs. Church.

COYLE

Mrs. Mary Webster Coyle, 83, died May 3, 2001, at Sunbridge of Lexington. She was born Jan. 13, 1918, in Dillon, S.C. to Alfred and Sadie Ammons Webster. Mrs. Coyle was retired from Kings Department Store. She was a member of South Minister Presbyterian Church and a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary 6367. She was preceded in death by her husband, Everette E. Coyle. Surviving are two daughters, Julia Jollay of Lexington and Myra Lebar of Cocoa, Fla.; a sister, Margaret Samaha of Dillon, S.C.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.

CULLER

Mrs. Lena Victoria Smith Culler, 90, formerly of Statesville died Friday, May 4, 2001, in Statesville. She was born Nov. 24, 1910, in Patrick County, Va. and was the daughter of the late Pinkney S. Smith and Victoria Culler Smith. She was married to the late Rev. Herbert Hampton Culler, who preceded her in death Jan. 13, 1997. Mrs. Culler was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Statesville. Mrs. Culler is survived by a son, Dr. O. Leighton Culler of Mocksville; five daughters, Mrs. June Lail and Mrs. Lorraine Lowry of Winston-Salem, Ms. Rachel Culler of Salisbury, Mrs. Charles (Mickey) Walters of Charlotte and Mrs. Jerry (Rosa) Burwell of San Diego, Calif.; a sister, Mrs. Fred (Maybelle) Smith of Ararat, Va.; 22 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Culler was preceded in death by two daughters, Mrs. Pauline Hanner and Mrs. Violet Morrison; two sons, Herbert Eric Culler and Arthur Newton Culler; and a grandson, Gregory Culler. Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 6, 2001, at Oakland Presbyterian Church in Statesville with the Rev. Steve Snipes officiating. Interment will follow in the Oakwood cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the funeral hour at the church. Nicholson Funeral Home is serving the family of Mrs. Culler.

GILLEY

EDEN - Dewey Cabell Gilley Sr. was born Aug. 27, 1913, in Eden, the son of Joseph Cabell Gilley and Katie Snow Gilley. Mr. Gilley passed away May 3, 2001, in Danville, Va., after a brief illness. He graduated from Leaksville High School and began ownership and operation with his father of Tri-City Transportation Co. for this region. On July 8, 1940, Mr. Gilley married his late, beloved wife of 58 years, Mary Johnston Gibbs Gilley. Mr. Gilley is survived by his son, Dewey Cabell Gilley Jr. Esquire of Beaufort, S.C., and his daughter, Dr. Mary Johnston Gilley Schiller of Akron, Ohio. Mr. Gilley had three grandchildren, Duncan Cabell Gilley, Agnes Heather Marie Gilley and Mary Elisabeth Johnston Schiller. Mr. Gilley had a sister, Leone Gilley Eggleston and a late sister, Margaret Gilley Parker. He also had a sister-in-law, Pattie Reid Gibbs Ward. Mr. Gilley retired from the transportation industry in 1978, had a keen love of religious knowledge and American history and was a lifelong sports enthusiast. Mr. Gilley was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Eden since 1948, served as a deacon and was instrumental in the building of the current church structure in 1950. The family requests that memorials be made either to the First Presbyterian Church of Eden or the Eden Da Vita Dialysis Center for the benefit of patients in Eden. The family will receive visitors at Fair Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, May 7, 2001, at the First Presbyterian Church of Eden. Interment will be at Overlook cemetery.

HOLT

BRANDON, Miss. - Mrs. Thomas M. "Forrestine" Holt, 82, a retired educator, died April 28, 2001, at Whispering Pines Hospice Ministries in Brandon, Miss. The burial was held at Oak Ridge United Methodist Church cemetery in Oak Ridge. Mrs. Holt, a native of Portsmouth, Va., was born March 13, 1919, to Mr. Joseph E. and Mary Lorraine Whitaker. She graduated from Longwood College, where she earned her BS degree in music She completed her doctorate in music education from Columbia University Teachers College in New York City. Throughout her teaching career, Mrs. Holt educated students at numerous institutions, including serving as the director of music education for Meredith College in Raleigh and as coordinator for the Silver-Burdette Publishing Co. in its series of developing rhythms and modern dance with song literature for children K through 12th grade. Mrs. Holt later served as an adjunct professor of voice and piano at Mississippi College. Mrs. Holt was an accomplished student of modern dance. She was an accomplished pianist and organist. She was a communicant of the Anglo-Catholic Church. She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Col. Thomas Michael Holt of Brandon, Miss. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice. Hanes-Lineberry, Pierce Chapel, Kernersville, assisted the family.

JENNINGS

The Rev. Jyles "J.B." Jennings, 76, a resident of 3778 Piedmont Memorial Drive, died May 4, 2001, at the High Point Regional Hospital. The Rev. Jennings was born April 16, 1925, in Austinville, Va. a son of James and Myrtle Taylor Jennings. He was the minister and a member of New Life Mission Church in High Point at the time of his death and was a retired employee of Henredon Furniture Co. On Jan. 31, 1965, he was married to the former Irene Lineberry, who survives of the home. Also surviving are two daughters, Jan Peters of Wallburg and Kimberly Jennings of the home; a son, J.W. Jennings of Kernersville; a stepdaughter, Linda Akers and husband Charles "Bud" of Winston-Salem; two brothers, Elmer Jennings of Archdale and Harry Jennings and wife Brenda of Asheboro; five grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; a great-grandchild; and two stepgreat-grandchildren. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at the New Life Mission Church, High Point with Pastor R.W. Teague, Pastor Danny Senic and Pastor Bob Laughlin officiating. Visitation will be at the church following the funeral service. Memorials may be directed to the donor's choice or to the American Cancer Society, 4-A Oak Branch Drive, Greensboro, NC 27407 or to "Love Line," c/o High Point Regional Hospital, P.O. Box HP-5, High Point, NC 27261.

JOHNSON

KERNERSVILLE - Mr. Van Hugh Johnson, 84, of 5850 Old Valley School Road, died Friday, May 4, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born on June 5, 1916, in Forsyth County a son of Ash and Eva Beeson Johnson Sapp. Mr. Johnson was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran. He was a graduate of N.C. State University. He retired from the U.S. Department of Agriculture as the district director with over 35 years of service. He was an original board member of the Horne Creek Living Historical Farm and a former chairman of the Kernersville Democrat Precinct. Surviving are his wife, Lucille Trent Johnson of the home; two sons, Gregory Hugh Johnson and his wife Vickie of Rural Hall and Geoffrey Trent Johnson of Greensboro; two granddaughters, Jennifer Johnson and Melissa Johnson; two brothers, Don B. Johnson and wife Melrose of Kernersville and Joe B. Johnson of Salisbury; and several loving nieces and nephews. Funeral arrangements are incomplete. Hayworth-Miller-Cain Funeral Home is assisting the Johnson family.
