FLETCHER

MOCKSVILLE - Mr. William Carl Fletcher, 86, of Ridge Road passed away Thursday, May 31, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mr. Fletcher was born April 19, 1915, in Jennings, N.C., to James C. and Sally Blankenship Fletcher. He was preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife, Pearl Bandy Fletcher, on August 9, 1996; two sons, Carl W. and Kenneth D. Fletcher, and a daughter, Joyce F. Foster. He was a member of Community Baptist Church and was employed with Troutman Furniture and worked as a farmer. Survivors include two daughters, Jane Spry and husband Lewis of Mocksville and Elaine Brown and husband Dennis of Mocksville; seven grandchildren; a brother, Claude W. Fletcher of South Carolina.; and a sister, Chloe Shaw of Carry, S.C. Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 2, 2001, at 2 p.m. at Davie Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Clyde Settles officiating. Burial will follow at Smith Chapel. The family will receive friends Friday, June 1, 2001 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Davie Funeral Service Chapel. GWYN

Ms. Mandy Mattie Gwyn was born March 17, 1921, in Winston-Salem to the late Margaret and Earnest Gwyn. She passed away Friday, May 25, at her home in Baltimore, Md., where she was a resident for more than 60 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, Margaret Gwyn Carethers and Earnest Gwyn; and two brothers, James "Pee Wee" and George W. Gwyn. Survivors include a daughter, Geraldine Hayes Hubbard; a son, Clyde Hayes, both of Baltimore, Md.; five sisters, Albert Gwyn Foy, Queen Gwyn Kelly, Gardine Jackie Gwyn and Barbara Jean Gwyn White, all of Winston-Salem, and Marie Carethers Thomas of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a brother, T.J. Babe Gwyn of Winston-Salem; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. The funeral will be conducted Saturday, June 2, 2001, in Baltimore, Md. HARBIN

STATESVILLE - Mr. William Paine Harbin, 78, of 1462 Old Coach Road, Kernersville died Thursday at N.C. Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Born in Gaston County on Nov. 19, 1922, he was a son of the late William H. Harbin and Mae Paine Harbin. He was a retired heavy construction equipment salesman for Mitchell Distributing Co. of Charlotte. He served during World War II in the U.S. Army and was a member of Masonic Lodge #27 AF & AM in Statesville. He was a graduate of N.C. State University. On Oct. 9, 1971, he married the former Martha Stephenson, who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Sandra Madison and her husband Doug of Statesville; three grand-children, Kristina S. Madison, Matthew D. Madison and wife Toni and Jonathan W. Madison; and two great-grandchildren, Kayla and Erin Madison. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Jason Madison. Memorial services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday at Westmoreland Chapel of Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home with the Rev. Roy Young officiating. Burial will follow privately at a later date. The family will assemble at and receive friends following the service at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Doug Madison at 2622 Fines Creek Drive, Statesville. JONES

LEXINGTON - Mr. Garland Erastus "Dick" Jones Jr., 79, of Ralph Miller Road died at 3:15 p.m. Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at Meadowbrook Terrace in Winston-Salem after a period of declining health. A funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, June 2, at Midway United Methodist Church where he was a member. The Rev. Harry R. Sellers Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mr. Jones was born June 28, 1921, in Davidson County to Garland Erastus Jones Sr. and Odessa Eller Jones. Before his retirement, he was self-employed in the wholesale/retail business with Broad Street Motor and Jones Shoe Center. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Harold Jones and Walt Jones and four sisters, Cleo Calloway, Leo Ogburn, Virginia Bartlett and Annie Bell Tate. Surviving are his wife, Louise Cable Jones of the home; sons Robin Jones and his wife Pat of Lexington and Sam Jones and his wife Kathy of Winston-Salem; daughters Anne Allred and her husband Steve of Winston-Salem and Jennifer Owens of Lexington; seven grandchildren, Jeffrey Wayne Jones, Daria Lynn Westervelt, Erica Owens and Dustin Owens all of Lexington and Sam Allred, Stephanie Allred and Cory Jones all of Winston-Salem; two great-grandchildren, Robin Haley Westervelt and Philip Raymond Jones of Lexington; and two sisters, Louise Newsome of Winston-Salem and Ella Kate Johnson of Mocksville. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Davidson Funeral Home, Hickory Tree Chapel and other times at the home.

JONES

Mrs. Opal Bodenhamer Jones, 80, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, May 30, 2001. She was born Feb. 4, 1921, in Davidson County to Charles L. and Beatrice Hendrix Bodenhamer. Mrs. Jones was of the Baptist faith and lived most of her life in Forsyth County. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother who was loved and will be greatly missed. Preceding her in death were her husband, Jamie O. Jones; five brothers; and two sisters. Surviving are a daughter, Dianne Weavil of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren, Candy Still and husband Donald and Kristy Mabe and husband Joel, all of Winston-Salem, and Jeffery Clodfelter and wife April of Johnson City, Tenn.; and four great-grandchildren, Zachary Stewart, Carson Still, Dylan Mabe and Brandon Clodfelter. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, June 2, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel by the Rev. Bobby Stafford. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

KEEFER

Mrs. Marjorie Woodruff Keefer, 73, of Bermuda Village died Tuesday, May 29, 2001. She was born July 29, 1927, in Bayonne, N.J. to William Alfred and Helen Nelson Woodruff. Mrs. Keefer was a member of King of Glory Lutheran Church and retired as a supervisor from AT&T. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Jackson Keefer. She is survived by two nephews, Joseph Yankura of Long Beach, N.Y., and Peter Yankura of Deer Park, N.Y., and a great-niece, Katie Yankura of Deer Park, N.Y. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel with the Rev. Phillip M. Squire officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Pine Lawn Memorial Gardens in Southern Pines. Memorials may be made to King of Glory Lutheran Church, 2580 Old Glory Road, Clemmons, NC 27012. Mr. Edward Lee Long, 56, of 2912 Woodleigh St., Winston-Salem, died Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at his home. He was born Feb. 13, 1945, in Charlotte to Denford B. and Georgia Stroud Ball. Mr. Long was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a member of VFW Post 1134. He was owner and operator of LHI Co. Surviving are his companion, Rosie Hardy; four daughters, Lisa, Tammy, Susan and Priscilla; five grandchildren; and a very special friend, Susan Felts. Funeral services will be 7 p.m. Friday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Bill Teague officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home following the service. MYERS

Mrs. Pauline "Polly" Frances Bristow Myers, 79, of Winston-Salem, the widow of Gorrell C. "Shorty" Myers, died Wednes-day morning at Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center after an extended illness of two months. Do not stand at my grave and weep; I am not there. I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow; I am the diamond glints on snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain; I am the gentle autumn's rain. When you awaken in the morning's hush, I am the swift, uplifting rush of quiet birds in circled flight, I am the soft star that shines at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry. I am not there; I did not die. (author unknown) Mrs. Myers was born in Hopewell, Va., on Dec. 14, 1921, the daughter of George Albert and Della Scarborough Bristow Sr. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Penny Price in 1988. Surviving are a daughter, Bonniesue Charles and her husband Jack Charles Jr. of Winston-Salem; a son, Gorrell C. "Fuzzy" Myers Jr. and his wife Pat of Nesbit, Miss.; five grandchildren, Chris Charles, Andy Charles, Samantha Eddleman, William Crews and Wesley Myers; and four great-grandchildren. Graveside ser-vices will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Vogler Main Street Chapel.

RICHARDSON

WALNUT COVE - Mr. Edd Wilson "Bud" Richardson Jr., 54, died unexpectedly Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at Carolina Medical Center. He was born in Forsyth County to Edd Wilson and Mary Ross Richardson. He was a proud U.S. Army veteran who served in the Vietname War and loved his country. He was employed as a systems analyst by U.S. Airways for the past 15 years. Bud was a member of First Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and was the groundskeeper. He took great pleasure in beautifying the church grounds for God, friends, family and because he loved his church. He was a dedicated Christian husband, father, son, grandfather, brother and friend. Preceding him in death were his father, Edd W. Richardson, and his brother, Danny Ross Richardson. Surviving are his wife of 31 years, Marsha Orsburn Richardson of the home; his mother, Mary Ross Richardson of Walnut Cove; daughters Stephanie Page and husband Jason of King, Ashley Richardson of the home (fiancé Justin McVey) and Kelly Richardson of the home (boyfriend Robbie Voss); brother Wayne R. and wife Sharon Richardson of Walnut Cove; sister-in-law Theresa D. Richardson of Walnut Cove; granddaughter Abigail McKenizie Page; nieces and nephew Lori, Amy, Amber, Scott and Anna Richardson; and numerous special relatives and friends. An 11 a.m. funeral service will be held Saturday, June 2, 2001, at First Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. WEMYSS

KERNERSVILLE - Daniel T. Wemyss Jr, 55, of 375 Fielding Drive, died suddenly on Thursday, May 31, 2001. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Main Street United Methodist Church in Kernersville. Mr. Wemyss was born November 15, 1945 in Fayetteville. He was a 1963 graduate of Fayetteville High School and a 1967 graduate of Methodist College in Fayetteville. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1967-1971 and was discharged as a lieutenant. He was employed for 29 years in management positions with Belk Department Stores and most recently as an Investment Representative for Edward Jones Investments in Walkertown. He was an Eagle Scout and had served as a Boy Scout leader. He was a member of the Main Street United Methodist Church and the Civitan Club of Kernersville. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Thomasson Wemyss of the home; a daughter, Jennifer Wemyss Hodgins and husband, Grant of Macon, Ga; son Daniel T. Wemyss III of Kernersville; parents, Daniel T. and Esther West Wemyss of Fayetteville; and brother, John Phillip Wemyss of Ocean Isle Beach. The family will receive friends at the church following the service. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial gifts be directed to Main Street United Methodist Church, 301 S. Main St., Kernersville, NC 27284; or The Children's Home, Inc., 1001 Reynolda Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27104. Hanes-Lineberry, Pierce Chapel is assisting the family.

ANDERSON

The funeral service for Mr. James "Waco" Anderson will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 8, at Living Word Fellowship Church, located 2060 Bethabara Road. The family will receive guests from 1:30 to 1:55 p.m. at the church. Mr. Anderson was born Oct. 15, 1935, in Jefferson, S.C. the son of Mrs. Ida M. Harley and the stepson of Mr. Johnnie Harley. He was born in Jefferson, S.C. He was married to the late Dorothy Blair Anderson and was an employee of the Winston-Salem Journal for many years, as well as a veteran of the U.S. Army. Anderson was also known for his love of golf and played avidly until his disability. In addition to the members of his church family, he is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Johnnie Harley of Forsyth County; his stepson, Dexter (Faye) of Winston-Salem; a sister, Lillie Mae Bryant of Charlotte; three aunts, Ola Mae Price of Pageland, S.C., Mary A. Austin of Jefferson, S.C. and Tera Merritt of Baltimore, Md.; a sister-in-law, Mary Thompson of Philadelphia, Pa.; a niece, Vicki Dargon (Brooks) of Winston-Salem; and four nephews, John (Diane), Willie and Garry all of Winston-Salem and Alphonso (Audrey) of Charlotte. BOWMAN

DOBSON - Mr. William Bobby Bowman, 59, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday morning, June 6, 2001, at the Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem after an extended illness. He was born in Patrick County, Va., Jan. 14, 1942, to the late Corlet Ray Bowman and Lou Ida Cockerham Bowman. Bobby was a truck driver for Carl Rose & Sons in Elkin. He was a member of Gospel View Baptist Church and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a loving husband, father, and Papa. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Vickie Ayers Bowman of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Lynette and Brian Badgett of Mount Airy; a son and daughter-in-law, William Todd and Jamie Bowman of Mount Airy; four grandchildren, Christopher Lee Badgett, 15, Alexander Toby Badgett, 8, Madison Makayla Badgett, 3, and Summer Nicole Bowman, 1; a precious mother-in-law, Media McMillian, of Cana, Va.; a bother and sister-in-law, Benny Ray and Sandy Bowman of Mount Airy; and a niece, Misty Bowman of Mount Airy. Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 9, 2001, at the Gospel View Baptist Church in Dobson. Burial will be in the Dobson City cemetery. The Rev. Jerry Sizemore and the Rev. Wayne Draughn will be conducting the service. His body will remain at Davis & Son Funeral Home in Dobson until carried to the church to lie in state 30 minutes before the service. GREENSBORO - Mr. John David Clarke, 63, of 3717 Anita Lane died Wednesday, June 6, 2001, at Moses Cone Hospital. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 8, 2001, at Lakeview Memorial Park. Mr. Clarke was a native of Lenoir. He was a retired electrician for T&S Fire & Security Systems. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Lenoir and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. Mr. Clarke is survived by his wife, Patty E. Clarke of the home; a son, Steven Clarke of Greensboro; two sisters, Betty Clarke Martin of Charlotte and Martha Clarke Abernethy of Winston-Salem; a brother, Sonny Clarke of Titusville, Fla.; nieces Melinda Clarke Sunnenberg of Man-hattan, Kan., Chrissie Martin Bannerman of Raleigh, Amanda Martin Maer of Charlotte and Jessica Abernethy and Lydia Abernethy, both of Winston-Salem; and nephews David Clarke of Springfield, Mo., and Rob Clarke of Albuquerque, N.M. Mr. Clarke was pre-deceased by her parents, Copper and Louise Clarke. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, June 7, 2001, at Forbis & Dick, N. Elm Chapel. KING - Mrs. Elsie Bowman Cole, 72, of 540 Ingram Road died Wednesday, June 6, 2001. She was born April 29, 1929, in Patrick County, Va., to Sammy and Maggie Bowman. She was a member of Mount Carmel Church of the Living God in Winston-Salem. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Thomas Cole in 1980. Surviving are three daughters, Janet (Lannie) Smith, Tammy Cole and Sharon (Joe) Wingo, all of Pinnacle; four stepdaughters, Bonnie (Jerry) Mahurin of Chapsmanboro, Tenn., Bertha Chance, Blanche Chaffee, Betty Prater and a stepson, Sonny Cole, all of Nashville, Tenn.; three grand-children, Paul Wingo, Travis Upchurch and Terri Hunt; several stepgrandchildren; five sisters, Mallie Hammock of Bassett, Va., Sissy Bowman of Stuart, Va., Annie Bowman of Ridgeway, Va., and Barbara and Flossie Bowman, both of Claudville, Va.; and two brothers, Curtis and Dewey Bowman, both of Claudville, Va. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 8, 2001, at Slate Funeral Home in King, with the Rev. Ronald Fowler and Gene Thompson, minister, officiating. Burial will follow in the Boyles Chapel Primitive Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 this evening at the funeral home and other times at the home of a daughter, Sharon Wingo, 417 Sam Marion Road, Pinnacle.

DAVIS

Mrs. Edith Keene Davis, 71, joined her husband in heaven June 5, 2001. Mrs. Davis died unexpectedly at her home after a lengthy illness. She was born in Buchanan County, Va., to Oliver Newton and Louisa Jane Horn Keen. She was a member of Canaan United Methodist Church and the Emma Clodfelter Sunday school class. She retired from Kroger Foods after 15 years of service and was a beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, an avid gardener and she loved cooking. Her husband, Devaughn Basel "D.B." Davis, four brothers and four sisters preceded Mrs. Davis in death. Survivors include four daughters and their husbands, Lomane and David Hill of Concord, Carlene and Steve Tesh, Deanna and Ray Hill, and Tamara and Tony Myers, all of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Boyd of Richlands, Va., and Mrs. Ellen Mitchell of Valdese; eight grandchildren, Kristen Hill Miller and husband James of Concord, Eric Hill of Charlotte, Jason Goins and wife Tina of Lexington, Ashley Goins, Adam Hill and Ryan Hill, and Justin Myers and Clayton Myers, all of Winston Salem; two great-grandchildren, Nathaniel Miller and Skylar Goins; and special friends, Sarah Hiatt, Louise New and Nancy Hines. Funeral services will be conducted 3:30 p.m. Friday, June 8, 2001, at Canaan United Methodist Church with the Rev. Wade Childers officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home Silas Creek Chapel. The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Susan Hines and all the staff at Piedmont Hematology and Oncology.

Mrs. Margaret Mearns Draughon, 81, of Wilkes Senior Village, formerly of the White Plains Community, and the widow of Mr. Marvin S. Draughon passed away Monday, June 5, 2001. Mrs. Draughon was born Nov. 25, 1919, in Brisbane, Australia, to the late William Cooper and Margaret Skakle Mearns. She was a homemaker and a member of Blues Grove Baptist Church. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Eddie Rupard of Jonesville; fours sons and daughters-in-law, Alex Draughon and Joe and Patricia Draughon of Mount Airy, Jeff and Patty Draughon of Ararat, and Mervin Draughon of Walnut Cove; a special family friend, Jeanette Hawks of Mount Airy; eight grandchildren; a twin sister, Mary Stutz of Queens-land, Australia; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Alex and Betty Mearns and Albert and Mary Mearns, all of Queensland, Australia; a sister-in-law, Ethel Jonas of Overland Park, Kan.; and two brothers-in-law, Albert Draughon of Holden Beach and J.J. Draughon of Pilot Mountain. Funeral services will be a 2 p.m. Friday, June 8, 2001, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel, con-ducted by the Rev. Tony Holder and the Rev. Ernest Nichols. Burial will follow in Blues Grove Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Thursday night at Moody Funeral Home.
