GILLEY

EDEN - Mr. Sanford Patterson "Buzzy" Gilley III, 57, of 330 Maplewood Drive died Tuesday, June 5, 2001, at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Fayetteville. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Overlook cemetery. He was born in Wilmington, Del. Mr. Gilley was awarded a Purple Heart while serving with the U.S. Army during Vietnam, was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a retired sergeant with the N.C. State Highway Patrol and a volunteer football coach at Morehead High School in Eden. Surviving are Holly Gilley of the home; a son, Jamie Gilley of Eden; two daughters, Emily Gilley of Boston, Mass, and Lauren Gilley of Wilmington; and three aunts, Marguerite Walker of Eden, Doris Kennedy of Wilmington and Lillian Adams of Winston-Salem. He was preceded in death by his mother, Anne Barksdale Gilley. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 this evening at Fair Funeral Home and other times at the home, 330 Maplewood Drive, Eden. HUTCHENS

ELKIN - Mrs. Vernie Viola Matthews Hutchens, 73, passed away Wednesday, June 6, 2001, at the Elkin HealthCare Center after a lengthy illness. She was born Aug. 6, 1927, in Yadkin County to the late John Ed and Creola Lineberry Matthews. Mrs. Hutchens was retired from Kentucky Fried Chicken with 30 years of service and was a member of Prospect United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Foy Hutchens, in 1977 and by a brother, Pete Matthews. Surviving are her children, Arno Hutchens of Salisbury, Vernon Lee Hutchens of Yadkinville and Margaret A. Hill of Elkin; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three sisters, Rosa Mae Hutchens of Mount Airy, Goldie Hutchens of Yadkinville and Evelene Baker of East Bend; and a brother, Bud Matthews of East Bend. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 Thursday at Gentry Family Funeral Service, Highway 601 N., Yadkinville. Her funeral service will be held immediately after the visitation at 8:30 p.m. in the Gentry Family Chapel by Preacher Jimmy Settle. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Prospect United Methodist Church cemetery. Gentry Family Funeral Service of Yadkinville is serving the family.

IVIE

EDEN - Mr. George Harris Ivie, 91, formerly of 314 S. Hamilton St., died Tuesday, June 5, 2001, at Annie Penn Memorial Hospital. A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Lawson cemetery. He was born in Leaksville, was a member of Leaksville United Methodist Church and retired as secretary/treasurer of Ivie Tire Co. Surviving are several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lee Lindsay Ivie, and his parents, Allen O. Ivie Sr. and Annie E. McKinney Ivie. There will be no formal visitation, but the family will receive friends at the home of his nephew, James W. Ivie Jr., 505 S. Hamilton St., Eden. Memorials may be made to Leaksville United Methodist Church, 603 Henry St., Eden, NC 27288; or the charity of the donor's choice. Fair Funeral Home in Eden is serving the family.

JESSUP

WESTFIELD - Miss Annie Zelphia Jessup, 98, passed away Tuesday, June 5, 2001, at Central Continuing Care in Mount Airy. She was born Jan. 21, 1903, in Stokes County to Derious Henderson and Rassie Cassandera Rogers Jessup. Miss Jessup was the cafeteria manager for more than 30 years at the Old Wake Forest College, Wake Forest. She was a farmer and a member and elder at Collinstown Presbyterian Church. She is survived by two sisters, Clidie Lou Rogers and Dorothy Mills of Westfield; a sister-in-Law, Doris Jessup of Westfield; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Annie Bowman. In addition to her parents, Miss Jessup was preceded in death by four sisters, Effie Sullivan, Etta Lawson, Edith Simmons and Thelma Jessup and by six brothers, Eldridge Jessup, Baby Jessup, Folger Jessup, J.D. Jessup, Kenneth Jessup and Porter Jessup. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 8, 2001, at Collinstown Presbyterian Church, conducted by Dr. Charles Howell and the Rev. Rickey Rogers. Interment will follow at Stateline Primitive Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Cox-Needham Funeral Home from 7 to 9 Thursday evening, June 7, 2001, and other times at Miss Jessup's home. JONES

Mr. Donald Bernard Jones, 63, of 1140 E. 14th St. passed away Monday, June 4, 2001, at his home after a period of illness. Mr. Jones was born in Winston-Salem on May 15, 1938, to Mrs. Beatrice Lowe Jones and the late James Council Jones. He attended the local public schools and graduated from Atkins High School. He attended Winston-Salem State University before he was drafted into the U.S. Army where he obtained the rank of sergeant first class. He served in Germany, South Korea and the Persian Gulf with the 2nd Armored Division. After 20 years of service, he retired on Nov. 1, 1981, and received the Meritorious Service Medal (the highest award in peace time for performance of duty). He was employed at McDonald's on Akron Drive, where he was a member of the managerial team until his health began to fail. Mr. Jones was a faithful member of the United Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church, where he served on the senior choir, the men's chorus and the church orchestra. He was the treasurer of the Kimberley Park Alumni Association and was an active member of the Winston-Salem State National Alumni Association. Mr. Jones was preceded in death by his father, James C. Jones and his wife, Betty E. Jones. He leaves to cherish his memory his mother, Mrs. Beatrice Jones of the home; three daughters, Donna J (Oscar) Robinson, Teresa A. Jones and Jeanetta (Benjamin) Perry; three sons, Michael, Kevin and Aaron Jones, all of San Diego, Calif.; a granddaughter, Pamela Jones of San Diego, Calif.; a brother, James D. (Christina) Jones of Baltimore, Md.; three aunts, Elizabeth L. Jackson of Winston-Salem, Pauline (Joseph) Whitaker and Altie Fields of San Diego, Calif; a loving and devoted friend, Barbara "JC" Manning,; several nieces and nephews; and a host of relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, June 8, 2001, at the First Baptist Church, 700 Highland Ave., with Dr. J. Donald Bellard officiating. The family will receive friends at the church 30 minutes before the services. Interment will follow at Evergreen cemetery. Clark S. Brown & Sons Funeral Home is in charge of the services and arrangements.

MATTHEWS

ADVANCE - Bernice W. Matthews died Wednesday, June 6, 2001, at the Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Cen-ter. Born Jan. 3, 1906, to Robert C. and Lela Williams in Wellington, Kan., she married Roy Clifton Matthews on Jan. 1, 1928. Since 1984 she had resided at Bermuda Village. Her immediate survivors are Dr. Claire Matthews of Hays, Kan.; Clifton and Anna Matthews of Winston-Salem; Dr. Julia Matthews of Atlanta, Ga.; Dr. Rachel Matthews and Ingrid Matthews of Seattle, Wash. Her character, courage, beauty and goodness will be greatly missed by those who knew her. A great lover of music, Bernice Matthews was a generous supporter of the Winston-Salem Symphony, the Foothills Music Festival, the Seattle Baroque Orchestra and the N. C. School of the Arts. She was a member of NCSA Giannini Society and the founder of a scholarship for piano students at the school. A memorial will be held at later date in Wellington, Kan. Memorials may be made to the Foothills Music Festival, Seattle Baroque Orchestra or N.C. School of the Arts Foundation.

OATES

Mrs. Leala Anderson Oates, 73, of 2401 N. Claremont Ave. passed away Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home after a period of illness. She was a native of Rock Hill, S.C., had lived in Winston-Salem for more than 50 years and was a retired domestic engineer. She was a member of Galilee Baptist Church, where she held membership on the Spiritual choir, Martha Naomi Missionary Circle, deaconess board and the culinary kitchen ministry. She was preceded in death by her husband, James W. Oates, on May 2, 2001. She is survived by a daughter, Annie Lee Carter of the home; a son-in-law, Albert S. Carter; three grandchildren, Michelle Jordan, Albert J. Carter (Tracy) and Leala N. Carter, all of Winston-Salem; 10 great-grandchildren; a sister, Frances Parsons of Jamaica, N.Y.; three brothers, George and David Anderson of New York and Charlie Anderson of Rock Hill, S.C.; a devoted cousin, Mary Barnett of Winston-Salem; a nephew, Paul Anderson of Winston-Salem; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday, June 9, 2001, at the Galilee Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert L. McGowens Sr. officiating. Interment will be in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 Friday evening, June 8, 2001, at the Russell Funeral Home. (Russell)

WAGONER

YADKINVILLE - Mr. Homer Holcomb Wagoner, 93, of West Main St. passed away Monday, June 4, 2001, at the Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He was born Aug. 24, 1907, in the Longtown Community of Yadkin County to Priscilla Holcomb Wagoner and Daniel Wagoner. At the age of 12, Mr. Wagoner became an only child with the death of his only brother, John D. Wagoner. He was orphaned by the time he was 16 when his parents died within a year of each other. He continued to live with his stepmother, Ella Long Holcomb Wagoner who died many years later. Mr. Wagoner attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and was a graduate of Appalachian State Teacher's College where he received a bachelor's degree in English with a minor in finance master's degree in Education. Mr. Wagoner was an avid baseball player and played semi-professional baseball during his early college career. He was also a state ranked tennis player. On Jan. 14, 1923, he married his wife of 64 years, Mabel Holton Wagoner, who died Aug. 7, 1997. Mr. Wagoner was a veteran of World War II serving with the US Navy in the Great Lakes region with the Medical Corps. After the war, Mr. Wagoner taught school in the Yadkinville public schools including West Yadkin, Courtney and Jonesville. He became principal at the Forbush Elementary School in the early 1950s. He became city manager of the town of Yadkinville in the 1960s. For 30 years he operated his own finance and mortgage company and was chairman of the board of directors of the Bank of Yadkin, and was instrumental in the merging of that bank with Central Carolina Bank, where he continued to serve on the board until his retirement. Mr. Wagoner served on the regional selection committee for the Morehead Foundation Scholarships during the 1960s. Mr. Wagoner was also instrumental in the negotiations to bring Unifi Inc. to Yadkinville. He was one of the founders of the Yadkin Country Club in 1961. He was a member of Harmony Grove Friends Meeting and later the Yadkin Friends Fellowship. Surviving are his two sons, Daniel Eugene Wagoner of Yadkinville and James Eric and his wife Sharon Wagoner of Darien, Conn.; and grandchildren Erin, Dustin and Alexis Wagoner. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Marjorie Prim and her husband Gorrell and their children, Clinton Prim and his wife Valerie and Margo Haynes and her husband Jim. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Yadkin Friends Fellowship officiated by the Rev. Keith Kannenberg and the Rev. Marcus Portis. Burial will follow in the Harmony Grove Friends cemetery. Lunch will follow at the church. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Gentry Family Funeral Service, Highway 601 N., Yadkinville.

WALL

Mrs. Isabelle Louise Wall, 91, of Winston-Salem died Wednesday, June 6, 2001, at Willowbrook Healthcare Center in Yadkinville. She was born Oct. 26, 1909, in Wilkes County to Charlie William and Nellie Elizabeth Wood. Mrs. Wall was a graduate of Appalachian State Teachers College and attended Draughn Business College and High Point College. She was founder and director of International Miracle Fellowship Ministries and served the people of India, Mexico and South Africa. She was the author of numerous books and published a book of poetry. Her name was among Who's Who of American Women. She also served on the Republican Presidential Task Force. Mrs. Wall was preceded in death by a sister, Jo Ann English and a brother, Fred Woods. Survivors include a daughter, Tommye Gengo and husband, Rock of Winston-Salem; a son, Fred Wade Wall and wife, Kay of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, Lisa Burton and husband Bill of Winston-Salem and Mike Gengo and wife Deb of Hickory; three great- grandchildren, Ashley Burton, Rieti Gengo and Patricia Anne Sheehan; three sisters, Esta Zimmerman, Da Wiles and Mary Litchfield; a brother, Curtis Woods; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Parklawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel with entombment following. The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel. Memorials may be made to Willowbrook Healthcare Center, 333 Ease Lee Ave., Yadkinville, NC 27055.

WISE

Mr. Lonnie Wise departed this life June 3, 2001. He was born May 6, 1926, to the late Willie Wise and Roberta Hampton Wise in Winston-Salem. He attended Winston-Salem/For-syth County schools and was an employee of Martinizing Cleaners from which he retired. He was a lifetime and faithful member of Community Baptist Church. Mr. Wise leaves to cherish his memories a sister, Mrs. Bertie Mae Askew; a brother, Dr. Robert L. Wise Sr. and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Jessie J. Wise; five nieces, Mrs. Marion Wise Jones (Walter), Mrs. Emma Owens, Debra Askew, Dionne Askew and Carolyn Byred all of New York; four nephews, Bishop Jerry Wise (Debra), Bishop Robert L. Wise Jr. (Angela), 1st Class Air War Fair Specialist (Navy) Samuel L. Jackson (Maguna) and Jessie Askew of New York; and a host of great-nieces, great-nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Macedonia Holiness Church of God, with the Rev. M.L. Frazier officiating. Burial will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2 p.m. at the church. The funeral cortege will assemble and leave from 4649 Northview St. Arrange-ments entrusted to Gilmore Funeral Home.

ADAMS

YADKINVILLE - Mrs. Martha Ann Hall Adams, 63, of Philmore St. passed away Monday June 4, 2001, at the David's House Nursing Center in Dobson. She was born June 17, 1937, in Yadkin County to the late Clarence Eldridge and Lonnie Eliza Wooten Hall. Mrs. Adams was a homemaker and a member of Maranatha Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Adams; her stepmother, Laura Belle Hall; and a half sister, Nora Bowers. Surviving are her brother, Junior Hall of Yadkinville; half sister, Marie Hailey of Boonville; and a half brother, James Hall. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Maranatha Baptist Church cemetery by the Rev. Allen Barker. Gentry Family Funeral Service, Highway 601 N., Yadkinville.

BLACKWELL

Mrs. Avis Richardson Blackwell, 55, died at her home Sunday afternoon. She was born in Winston-Salem on Dec. 12, 1945, to Champ C. Richardson and Polly Williams Richardson. Since 1965 Mrs. Blackwell had worked as an oncology nurse at Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center. She was an avid gardener, reader and lover of nature. She was a lifelong member of Maple Springs United Methodist Church. Preceding her in death were her parents and a brother, Ray O. Richardson. Surviving are her husband, Curtis H. Blackwell of the home; her son, Norman Hiatt and wife Kim; two daughters, Derenda Wiemer and Julia Blackwell; a grandson, Chase Hiatt; a granddaughter, Haley Hiatt; a brother, C. Clark Richardson and wife Nancy; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends who loved her. An informal service celebrating Avis' life will be held at Maple Springs United Methodist Church in Craven Hall Saturday, June 9, at 2 p.m. conducted by the Rev. Robert Scott. BULLARD

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - Eunice Wilkinson Bullard, 89, of 2012 Sherwood Drive died Monday, June 4, 2001, at Appalachian Christian Village. Mrs. Bullard was a native of Old Fort, a former resident of Winston-Salem and had lived in Johnson City since 1996. She was a daughter of the late Samuel M. and Mamie A. Wood Wilkinson. Mrs. Bullard was a retired schoolteacher and a member of Maple Springs United Methodist Church. Survivors include a nephew, Patrick H. Sweeney and his wife Joyce of Elizabethton, Tenn.; a great-nephew, Patrick Sweeney of Nashville, Tenn.; and two great-nieces, Rebecca Sweeney of Johnson City and Mary Sweeney Tipton of Burlington, Ky. Graveside services for Mrs. Bullard will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 6, at Monte Vista Burial Park, with Minister John Bunn officiating. Family and friends will assemble at the cemetery.

CLODFELTER

YADKINVILLE - Mr. Robert Lee Clodfelter, 73, of Yadkinville, died unexpectedly Friday, June 1, 2001, at his home. Mr. Clodfelter was born Jan. 31, 1928, in Forsyth County to Oscar and Myrtle Ziglar Clodfelter. He was retired from Sara Lee Corp., was a member of Bethabara Moravian Church, and was an avid fisherman. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Jean Shermer Clodfelter of the home; three daughters, Catherine Clodfelter of Winston-Salem, Cynthia Humphries and husband Robert of El Paso, Texas, and Cheryl Clodfelter of Mocksville; a granddaughter, Emily Clodfelter; and three sisters, Jean Calloway of Tobaccoville, Ruth Shouse and husband William of Dale, S.C., and Jackie Newsome of Clemmons. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, June 10, 2001, at Bethabara Moravian Church with the Rev. Donald W. Griffin officiating. Arrangements are entrusted to Gentry Family Funeral Service, Yadkinville.

CROWDER

DETROIT, Mich. - Mr. Eugene Crowder, 74, died June 1, 2001, after an extended illness. He was born March 16, 1927, in Winston-Salem to the late Lottie Thaxton and Leroy K. Crowder. He had lived in Detroit since the 1970s and resided at St. Michael's in Wayne County, Detroit. Mr. Crowder was a former employee of Great Lakes Steel Plant in Detroit and a member of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Detroit. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Willie Crowder and Hurbert Crowder, both of Winston-Salem. He is survived by a dear brother, Raymond Crowder of Winston-Salem; two sisters-in-law, Lena Thomas Crowder and Sinclair Crowder of Winston-Salem; a niece, Rayonette Crowder of Winston-Salem; and other relatives and friends. A memorial Mass will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, June 8, at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Burial will be at Elliot in Detroit. Brundage Funeral Home, Detroit, is in charge of the services.

FULP

Mrs. Sarah Meeks Fulp passed on Friday, June 1, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born Feb. 7, 1925, to the late Rev. Will Meeks and Mrs. Susanna Meeks in Hickory Grove, S.C. Mrs. Fulp spent her early life in Winston-Salem, where she attended the local public schools. After graduating from Atkins High School, she attended and graduated from Elizabeth City Teachers College. She earned a master's degree in education from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in Greensboro. She began her teaching career in Elizabethtown, moving from there to Mooresville and to Stewart, Va. She retired from the Stokes County School System in 1985. Mrs. Fulp began her life as a Christian at an early age being the daughter of a minister and being raised in a Christian home. She was a member of Mount Pleasant Methodist Church, which became St. Paul United Methodist Church, where she served as a faithful member until her health began to decline about a year ago. Mrs. Fulp was an active member of the Skyland Park Community Flower Club #3 and the Potpourri Senior Adult Group. Mrs. Fulp was preceded in death by her parents; and her three brothers, John, Robert and Harold Meeks. She leaves to cherish her memory her husband of 46 years, Mr. Warren H. Fulp of the home; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Wanda Beasley Moore; and three stepgrandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Ruby Meeks of the city, and Mrs. Jettlue Meeks of Hickory Grove, S.C.; an aunt, Mrs. Mattie Mae Howard of the city; 14 nieces and eight nephews and their families; and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends. Among these survivors are a devoted and caring niece, Mrs. Vera Covater Hilliam, and a devoted and caring cousin, Mr. Carl Bankhead, also of the city. She leaves to mourn her passing three special friends, Mrs. Doris Thompson of the city, and Mr. and Mrs. Bill Wharton of Mocksville. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 6, at St. Paul United Methodist Church (2400 Dellabrook Road) with the church's pastor the Rev. Donald Jenkins officiating. Burial will follow in the Evergreen cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2 p.m. prior to the funeral service. They can be reached at the home, 567 Kinard Drive in Winston-Salem. Special thanks are extended to the caring staff at Forsyth Medical Center, ninth floor, and to the loving and caring staff of Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home.
