GUNTER

MOCKSVILLE - Mr. Lindsay Raymond Gunter, 75, of Chinquapin Road passed away Monday, June 5, 2001, at Autumn Care of Mocksville. He was born Nov. 23, 1925, in Yadkin County to the late Paul and Odessa Baity Gunter. Mr. Gunter was a retired sawmiller and tobacco farmer and was a member of Liberty Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his sister, Inez Troutman, and two brothers, Samuel Gunter and R.W. Gunter. Surviving are his wife of 561/2 years, Virginia Doris Speer Gunter, of the home; eight children, Linda (Gary) Sidden of Mocksville, Steve Gunter of Harmony, Shirley (Lee) Shore of Yadkinville; Wayne (Angie) Gunter of Mocksville, Marie (Paul) Melrose of Yadkinville, Rebecca (Johnny) Mauldin of Mocksville, Brenda (Bobby) Settles of Dobson and Terry (Patty) Gunter of Mocksville; 22 grandchildren; 23 great-grand-children; a sister, Nellie Speer of Mocksville; a brother, Charles Gunter of Harmony; an uncle, Howard Gunter; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. His funeral service will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Liberty Baptist Church by the Rev. Marvin Blackburn and the Rev. Albert Bracken. He will lie in state 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Gentry Family Funeral Service, Highway 601 N., Yadkinville. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Liberty Baptist Church cemetery Fund, c/o Johnny Hobson 492 Chinquapin Road, Mocksville, NC 27028.

LINDSAY

Mr. Darryl Lamont Lindsay, 33, known to all as "Big D," of 1605 N. Cherry St., passed away Thursday, May 31, 2001, at the Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Cen-ter. He was a native of Winston-Salem, born on June 15, 1967, to Cheryl Lindsay and the late Arnold Lamont Jeffreys. He was a graduate of West Forsyth High School, a veteran of the U.S. Army, was employed at Food Lion stores and was of the Baptist faith. He is survived by his dear mother, Cheryl Lindsay Donnie of the home; two children, LaShunda Yvette Moore and Darryl Lamont Moore, both of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Trelisa Danielle Wiggins of Winston-Salem and Isisces Zekia Wiggins of Philadelphia, Pa.; a brother, Rahsaan Wiggins of the home; his maternal grandmother, Naomi Lindsay Anderson of Bear, Del.; his paternal grandmother, Sarah Jeffreys of Winston-Salem; aunts and uncles Betty Lindsay Stephens (Charles) of Rosedale, Md., Madeline Yvonne Jeffreys of Providence, R.I., Carolyn Lindsay (Michael) of Winston-Salem, Denise Caesar (Cleophus, Jr.) of Philadelphia, Pa., and Dr. Harold Leon Jeffreys of Garner; his devoted friend, Debra Buey of Winston-Salem; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at noon Thursday, June 7, 2001, in the chapel of the Russell Funeral Home, with the Rev. Victor Davidson officiating. Interment will be in the Salisbury National cemetery. The family visitation will be from 11:30 to noon Thursday at the funeral home.

McEWEN

MOCKSVILLE - Master Jesse Wayne "Bubba" McEwen, 6, of Chinquapin Road passed away Monday, June 4, 2001, at Brenner Children's Hospital in Winston-Salem after a sudden illness. He was born May 14, 1995, in Forsyth County to Jesse S. McEwen Jr. and Teresa Eddleman McEwen. Bubba attended kindergarten at William R. Davie Elementary School. He enjoyed playing T-ball with the White Sox and was eagerly awaiting the game on Saturday June 2, 2001. Bubba also loved his pets, playing in the sand pile, jumping on the trampoline with his cousins, and riding his four-wheeler. Surviving are his mother, Teresa Eddleman McEwen of Yadkin-ville; his father, Jesse S. McEwen Jr of Mocksville; his brother, James Stanley "Shorty" McEwen of Mocksville; his grandparents, Jesse and Arvesta McEwen of Mocksville, Roy and Zelma Eddleman of Yadkinville and Marie Wishon of Yadkinville; aunts and uncles Troy and Teresa Apperson and Roy Neal and Lou Ann Eddleman; great-grandparents Lula Mae Smith, Sally Connell and Pete Wishon; great-great-grandparents Mary Riddle Gough; other special loved ones, Lynn Robbins, Tiffany Nicole Vestal, Nanna Judy Wishon, Wayne and Wanda Robbins and Chris and Bridgett Robbins; and numerous other great-aunts and uncles. His funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Liberty Baptist Church by the Rev. Marvin Blackburn, the Rev. David Maynard and the Rev. Monroe Otto. He will lie in state 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in the church cem-etery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wed-nesday at Gentry Family Funeral Service, Highway 601 N., Yadkinville. MEDINA

Mrs. Grace Medina, 68, of Winston-Salem passed away Monday, June 4, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mrs. Medina had been active with Northwest Forsyth Little League and volunteered with Cancer Services of Forsyth County. Mrs. Medina is survived by a loving husband of 47 years, Kanute Medina; three daughters, Stephanie Capps and husband Chip of Charlotte, Teresa McDermod and husband Bob of Medford, Mass., and Monica Medina-Murphy and husband Jeffrey of Kernersville and a son, Knute "Buddy" Medina of Chapel Hill. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Jenni Zehnacker and husband David, Bill Capps, Bill McDermod, Sarah McDermod, Melanie Murphy, Michael Murphy and Taylor Medina. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 6, at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel, conducted by Chaplain Fred Moretz. The family will receive friends after the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103; or to Cancer Services Inc., 3175 Maplewood Ave., Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

PARKS

BRONX, N.Y. - Mr. John Parks Jr., 57, of 947 Teller Ave. passed away Friday, June 1, 2001, in the Bronx. He was a native of Winston-Salem, born Oct. 23, 1943, the son of Mattie L. Parks and John L. Parks Sr. He was educated in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school system and had lived in New York State for many years. He was a member and deacon at the Shiloh Baptist Church in the Bronx, was employed by LU Medical Center and was a famed musician. He is survived by his wife, Norma McCoy Parks of the home; two daughters, Kimberly and Tara; two grandsons, Michael and Jason, all of Baltimore, Md.; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John L. Parks Sr. of Winston-Salem; four brothers, Edward, James, Douglas and Kenneth; a sister, Patricia; sister; brother-in-law; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. A service in his memory will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, June 7, 2001, in the chapel of the Russell Funeral Home, with the Rev. Konnie G. Robinson officiating. Interment will be in the Evergreen cemetery. The family visitation will be from 2:30 to 3 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. PAYNE

Mrs. Margaret "Sue" Bowman Payne, 82, of Winston-Salem died Monday, June 4, 2001, at Meadowbrook Terrace of Winston-Salem. She was born Oct. 9, 1918, in Alexander, N.C., to Troy and Bessie Little Bowman. Mrs. Payne was preceded in death by her husband, Burette "Brownie" Parks Payne in 1987. Surviving are a sister, Catherine Boyles of Clemmons, and a number of nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Liberty United Methodist Church cemetery in Hiddenite. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Liberty United Methodist Church, Hiddenite, N.C. (Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is in charge of arrangements).

SHAFFNER

JONESVILLE - Mrs. Helen Louise Atkins Shaffner, 62, of Shaffner Road passed away Monday, June 4, 2001, at North Carolina Baptist Hospital. She was born March 19, 1939, in Surry County to the late William Webster and Lela Mae Badgett Atkins. Mrs. Shaffner was a homemaker and volunteered for years with the Old Hickory Council Cub Scouts and the Volunteer Reading Program at Jonesville Elementary School. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Jonesville where she served as a former Sunday school teacher for the 4 and 5-year-olds. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Mary Etta Atkins Bledsoe, Nellie Ruth Atkins Hayes and Willie Elizabeth Atkins Shaffner; a brother, Glenn Lee Atkins; and a nephew, Henry Rufus Shaffner Jr. Surviving are her husband of 46 years, Dewitt Clarence Shaffner of the home; her son Barry Dewitt Shaffner, of the home; three sisters, Metta "Polly" Atkins Silleson, Dottie Atkins Hollander and Nancy Atkins Cantrell; three special nieces and other nieces and nephews. Her funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Chruch of Jonesville by Dr. Ray Hamilton and the Rev. Bill Byrd. Burial will follow in Crestwood Memorial Gardens. SMITH

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Mrs. Ruth M. Smith, 96, died June 4, at a local hospital. Mrs. Smith, one of seven children, was born in Ashe County and had lived in Blacksburg, Va., Verona, N.J., and since 1965 had been a resident of Huntsville, Ala. Mrs. Smith had been a sorority house mother in Minneapolis and in Tuscaloosa, had served as a president of the Chapman Heights Garden Club and was a member of the Hospitality Club of Huntsville. Mrs. Smith was considered the "Grandmother" of the UAH Charger ice-hockey team for many years and had traveled extensively. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Hampton J. Dailey and their son, Hampton J. Dailey Jr., and by her second husband, Norman E. Smith. Mrs. Smith is survived by her sons, Richard M. Dailey of Huntsville, Ala., and Jere G. Dailey of Winston-Salem; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grand-children; a sister, Lavon Spaulding of Pittsboro; and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be 10 a.m. to noon Thursday, June 7, at Laughlin Funeral Home. A private family burial service, with the Rev. Mitchell Williams officiating, will be held at Maple Hill cemetery at a later time. Donations may be made in Mrs. Smith's memory to Aldersgate United Methodist Church Building Fund, 12901 Bailey Cove Road, Huntsville, AL 35803; or to the UAH Charger ice-hockey program.

TEMPLE

Mrs. Alphia Burns Temple, 102, died Sunday, June 3, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born June 14, 1898, in Fort Springs, W.Va., to C.H. and Betty Lee Burns. Mrs. Temple had been a member of Sedge Garden United Methodist Church and retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Oscar Temple Sr.; her son, the Rev. Edward Oscar Temple Jr.; and her daughter, Betty Lucille Bullard. Surviving are six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; numerous great-great-grandchildren; and several great-great-great-grandchildren. Alphia was residing at Davie Place in Mocksville when she was taken from this world. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel. Burial will follow in Salem cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

UTT

Mrs. Mary B. Utt, 82, of 3801 Briarwood Ave., High Point, died Monday, June 4, 2001, in Surf City. She was born Jan. 6, 1919, in Wilkes County to the late Jim and Bertha Holbrook Sebastian. Mrs. Utt was a member of Lewisville Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow C. Utt. Surviving are a daughter, Carolyn Utt Morris and husband J.O. of High Point; a grandson, Bubba Morris and wife Tracey; a great-grandson, Woody Morris; a sister, Nellie Sapp of Lewisville; and a very special lifelong friend, Hazel Tesh. A graveside service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Forsyth Memorial Park, with the Rev. Jeff Priest officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel and other times at the home of her sister, 1064 Lewisville-Clem-mons Road. Memorials may be made to Lewisville Baptist Church Building Fund, 125 Lewisville-Clemmons Road, Lewisville, NC 27023.

WAGNER

YADKINVILLE - Mr. Homer Wagner of West Main Street passed away Monday, June 4, 2001, at the Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Cen-ter. Funeral arrangements are incomplete, with Gentry Family Funeral Service of Yadkinville serving the family.

WILKINS

Mrs. Josephine Reavis Wilkins, 80, of Winston-Salem died Monday, June 4, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born Sept. 23, 1920, in Yadkin County to the late Benjamin Franklin and Nora Hampton Reavis. Mrs. Wilkins was retired from the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school system and was a member of South Fork Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by a son, Ray Wilkins, in 1980 and her husband, Raymond Foy Wilkins in 1986. She is survived by three grandchildren, R. Keith Wilkins and wife Janet, Kelli W. Adams and husband Bill and Kristi W. Idol and husband James; six great-grandchildren, Nicholas Adams, Joseph Adams, Taylor Idol, Payton Idol, Jordan Wilkins and Justin Wilkins; a daughter-in-law, Nancy Wilkins; three sisters, Sylvia Hudson, Lacy Ebert and Ruth Lee Vestal; and a special friend, Glenda McDaniel. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel by the Rev. Paul Mullen. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

WISE

Funeral services for Mr. Lonnie Wise will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Macedonia Holiness Church, with Dr. R.L. Wise officiating. Burial will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. WOOD

RURAL HALL - Mr. Bruce Turner Wood, 75, passed away Sunday, June 3, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born May 8, 1926, to the late Harry N. and Eula Gaither Wood in Forsyth County. He married Mary Smith on July 28, 1956, in Winston-Salem. Mr. Wood was a charter member of the Lamb Worship Assembly in German-ton. He delivered the Winston-Salem Journal for many years. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Esther Hartley. Surviving him are his wife, Mary Smith Wood of Rural Hall; two sons, Harry L. Wood and his wife Janice of Germanton and Jonathan C. Wood and his wife Tammy of King; a daughter, Kathy Wood Peck and her husband Steven of Raleigh; a sister, Jetty Tucker of Greensboro; two grandchildren, Christopher Peck and Deborah Naomi Peck, both of Raleigh; four stepgrandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren. Also surviving him are numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 6, 2001, at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel. Interment will follow at Parklawn Memorial Gardens. Pastor Harry L. Wood and Associate Pastor Dennis McCown will officiate. Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 Tuesday evening at the funeral home.

WOOD

PILOT MOUNTAIN - Mr. Homer Troy Wood, 74, of 449 Golf Course Road died Monday, June 4, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He was born in Surry County on Feb. 7, 1927, to the late Julius Grover and Clarice Nelson Wood. Mr. Wood was a veteran of both World War II and the Korean War. He was the retired owner of Pilot Well and Tank Co. and of the Methodist faith. Mr. Wood is survived by his wife, Gaye Wood, of the home; three sons and daughters-in-law, Gregory and Janice Wood of New Orleans, La., Bryan and Toni Wood of Tomball, Texas, and Sidney and Cindy Wood of Florence, S.C.; a stepdaughter and stepson-in-law, Connie and Butch Bradley of Lexington; a grandson, Gregory Wood Jr. of New Orleans; two stepgrandchildren, Kelli Brown and Michael Trueblood of Kernersville; a sister, Ruth (Skid) Seymour of Hillsville, Va.; and a very special friend, Leonard Goins of Pilot Mountain. In addition to his parents, Mr. Wood was preceded in death by a sister, Peggy Johnson. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 7, 2001, at Pilot Mountain City cemetery, Pilot Mountain, conducted by Mr. Leonard Goins. A flag presentation will be conducted by VFW Post 9436 of Pilot Mountain. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Wednesday night at Howell Funeral Home of Pilot Mountain. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to the charity of the donor's choice. The family would like to extend their sincerest appreciation to all the nurses of the eighth-floor pulmonary unit at Forsyth Medical Center, Winston-Salem. The family is being served by Howell Funeral Service of Pilot Mountain.

BALL

NORTH WILKESBORO - Mrs. Ann Madonna Transeau Ball, 83, widow of Hansford D. "H.D." Ball of E Street died Friday, May 25, at Wilkes Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Ball was born Oct. 1, 1917, in Wilkes County to Edwin Lafayette and Rebecca Coleman Transeau. She graduated from Wilkesboro High School and Church Beauty School. Mrs. Ball owned and operated a beauty salon for years in Conover. Later Mrs. Ball and her husband, Hansford Ball, owned and operated Thrift Super Market. Surviving are a son, Durant Ball of Newport News, Va.; three daughters, Linda Dancy of Hickory, Zonda Kay Ball and Brenda Ball, both of North Wilkesboro; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 30, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Highway 115 S., North Wilkesboro, with Bishop Theon Johnson and Bishop Tim Marlow officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30. Burial will be in the church cemetery located on Balls Mill Road. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 tonight at the church. Miller Funeral Service of North Wilkesboro is in charge of the arrangements.
