HUNTER

Mrs. Lucy Mae Reavis Hunter, 81, died Saturday afternoon at the Brian Center. She was born in Winston-Salem on Dec. 28, 1919, to Burley Holland Reavis and Ollie Love Reavis. Mrs. Hunter graduated from R.J. Reynolds High School and later took courses leading to her work as a nursing assistant. She retired from the Moravian Home Health Care Center several years ago. She was a longtime member of Bethania Moravian Church. She was preceded in death by her brother, Carl Reavis. She is survived by a son, Theodore Wesley Hunter Jr. and his wife Myra of Pfafftown; a daughter, Barbara Jay Cashion and husband Bill of Houston, Texas; four grandchildren, Adrian and Craig Hunter, Kim Bennett Kitchens and Loree Heckt; three great-grandchildren, Bennett and Becky Kitchens, and Eli Hunter; and a sister, Thelma Williams of Charlotte. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Bethania Moravian Church, conducted by the Rev. Charles Fishel. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the funeral. Interment will be in the church graveyard. Memorials may be made to the building fund of Bethania Moravian Church, 5545 Main St., Bethania, NC 27010.

KENNEDY

ELKIN - Mrs. Mable Johnson Kennedy, 54, of Mining Ridge Church Road passed away Saturday, May 26, 2001, at her residence. Mrs. Kennedy was born Jan. 29, 1947, in Wilkes County to the Rev. Lester and Eulala Johnson. Mrs. Kennedy was the circulation manager of The Tribune and was a member of Little Stone Mountain Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Johnson, and a sister, Evelyn Jolly. She is survived by her husband, Donald Gene Kennedy of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Jason and Dianna Kennedy of Jonesville; a daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Mac Jones of Thurmond; two grandchildren, Carrie and Colby Jones; four brothers, Allen Johnson, Claude Johnson, Noah Johnson, all of Mountain View; four sisters, Etta Mae Kanupp of Lenoir, Opal Shumate of Hayes, Carrie Billings of Traphill, and Carol Kennedy of Mountain View. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, May 28, at Little Stone Mountain Baptist Church with the Revs. Walter Hutchenson and Amos Lyon officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Kennedy will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin. In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society or to Hospice of Surry/Yadkin County.

KIGER

Mrs. Bessie Goins "Betsy" Kiger, 74, of 5280 Phelps Drive died Saturday May 26, 2001, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem after a period of declining health. Mrs. Kiger was born in Surry County on Aug. 24, 1926, the daughter of Elmer and Rosie Lee Culler Goins. She was a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, David M. Kiger of the home; three daughters, Jean Collins and husband Claude of Winston-Salem, Shirley Williams of Walkertown and Judy Watson and husband Roger of Rural Hall; one son, Tim Kiger of Walkertown; eight grandchildren, Greg Warner, Vivian Williams, Bronna Gesler, Sherry Doub, Joe Williams, David Watson, Robbie Watson and Brian Kiger; 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ruby Carpenter and Hester Dillon, both of Ellerbe; two brothers, the Rev. Otis Goins of Albemarle and Robert Goins of Ellerbe. She was preceded in death by a brother, Virgil Goins, in September 2000. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, May 28, at Hayworth-Miller Chapel in Rural Hall, with the Revs. Otis Goins and David Keaton and Minister Don Wallace officiating. Burial will follow in Shiloh United Methodist Church cemetery in Winston-Salem. The Kiger family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative CareCenter of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

MALACHI

Mrs. Cora Grier Malachi, 83, expired Wednesday night, May 23, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. A native of Winnsboro, S.C., she spent most of her life in Winston-Salem at 449 W. 24th St., and the past three years at South Fork Assisted Living. She was a faithful member of Greater Saint Matthews Church, the Les Bonne Filles Club, and the 24th Street Flower Club. Mrs. Malachi was preceded in death by two brothers, Lonnie and Wallie Robertson, and a sister, Mrs. Lula Bell Gwyn. She leaves with memories to cherish a daughter, Brenda Grier Norris; a grandson, Benjamin Ray Norris II; two foster daughters, Sherrie Drummond and Constance Bowman; five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and a devoted niece, Margaret Adams. Homegoing services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 29, at Greater St. Matthews Church, with the Rev. W.M. Purvis officiating. The remains will be placed in the church at 12:30 p.m. The family will meet friends from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Burial will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. NELSON

Mrs. Fallie Byerly Nelson, 85, died Friday May 25, 2001, at The Oaks at Forsyth. She was born March 23, 1916, in Davidson County to Ed and Jennie Sink Byerly. Mrs. Nelson was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church, Clemmons. She is survived by her husband, James Clifford Nelson; a daughter, Kay Nelson Shoaf and husband Larry of Lexington; a son, James Edward Nelson and wife Kathy of Clemmons; four grandchildren and five great- grandchildren; and a brother, Clifford Byerly of Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Centenary United Methodist Church, Clemmons with the Rev. Barry Lemons officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes. PARKER

MURRELLS INLET, S.C. - Betty J. Parker, 68, of Patricia Avenue died Friday, May 25, 2001, at her home. Mrs. Parker was born in Davie County, a daughter of Onnie Bowles and the late Lendon Bowles. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Vickie Nelson, and two brothers, Lester and Woody. Mrs. Parker had retired from Hanes Hosiery in Winston-Salem. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Murrells Inlet, where she was a member of the choir. In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Paul Joe Parker; a son, Donny Bowles of Sparta; a stepson and stepdaughter, both of Michigan; five brothers, Eugene Bowles of Nebraska, Billy Bowles of Pfafftown, James Bowles of Concord, Richard Bowles of Spartanburg, S.C., and Charlie Bowles of Colorado; three sisters, Dorothy Powell of Connersville, Sue Darby of Yadkinville, and Shirley Styers of Walkertown; and several grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church of Murrells Inlet. Burial will follow in Hillcrest cemetery. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Murrells Inlet Building Fund, P.O. Box 285, Murrells Inlet, SC 29576.

BECK

MOUNT AIRY - Mrs. Della Annalee Kirkman Beck, 95, widow of the late Otis A. Beck, passed away at Northern Hospital of Surry County on Sunday morning. Mrs. Beck was born in Surry County on May 21, 1906, the daughter of the late Oscar Kirkman and Nannie Shelton Kirkman She was a housewife and a member of the Shelton Church of the Brethren. She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Ella Mae Pruitt of Mount Airy, Belva and Frank Semones of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Brenda Faye and Oliver Fischer II of Huntingtown, Md., and Ules Easter of Mount Airy; four sons and daughters-in-law, Oscar and Belle Beck of Woodlawn, Va., Paul and Mabel Beck of Winston-Salem, Roscoe and Edith Beck of Mount Airy, Ralph and Patricia Beck of Mount Airy, Katherine Beck of Mount Airy, Connie Sue Inscore and Connie W. Beck, both of Ararat, Va.; 26 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Katie Farmer of Mount Airy, and Clemmie Beck of Sparta; a brother-in-law, Charlie Beck of Asheboro; and five special friends, Rita Gardner of Hillsville, Va., Jimmy and Gerri Monroe of Galax, Va., and Bobby and Mary Johnson of Clarksville. Md. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Beck was preceded in death by two daughters, Suzetta Beck and Irene Easter; three sons, William Otis Beck, Claude A. Beck, and Archie F. Beck; a special son-in-law, Ernest C. Pruitt Sr.; two sisters, Maggie Branch and Elva Poteat; and four brothers, Arthur Kirkman, Jimmy Kirkman, Charlie Kirkman, and Archie Kirkman. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 29, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel with services conducted by Brother Marvin Wade. Burial will follow at the Shelton Church of the Brethren in Sheltontown. BRINKLEY

Mrs. Pamela Key Brinkley, 36, of Community Road died Sunday, May 27, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Feb. 17, 1965, in Forsyth County to Donald and Shirley Whitt Key. She is survived by her husband, Tera Joe Brinkley of the home; a brother, Jeffrey Key and wife Kim; paternal grandmother, Jettie Key; nine nieces and nephews, and numerous friends and relatives who will cherish her memory. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Fred Key; and her maternal grandparents, Robert and Loretta Whitt. She was a very special and much loved daughter-in-law and sister-in-law who will be missed greatly. She touched the lives of all who knew her with her gentle spirit. A funeral service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 29, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. Rhonda Cooper officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

CLAYTON

LEWISVILLE - Mrs. Evelyn J. Burns Clayton, 92, died Saturday, May 26, 2001, and has gone to rest and is now awaiting the resurrection (John 11:25). She was born in Forsyth County on April 26, 1909, to Gideon L. and Julia Tuttle Jones. Evelyn attended Reynolds High School. Because of her strong Christian faith, she dedicated her life to Jehovah God and symbolized that dedication by baptism in 1979. She is survived by two daughters, Sarah Campbell Walsh (Jim) of High Point, and Reva Burns Naylor (Johnny) of Winston-Salem; a son, John P. Burns (Carolyn) of Lewisville; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 29, at Vogler Clemmons Chapel. Congregation Elder Paul Coconis will officiate. There will be no formal visitation. The family appreciates the kindness but requests that flowers and food be omitted. It was Evelyn's request in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Clemmons congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses, 1710 Lewisville-Clemmons Road, Clemmons, NC 27012. The family wishes to express their appreciation for all the love and care that was given to our mother during her illness, and also to two special great-granddaughters, Brittany and Ashley Holton, as they were a joy to her.

COX

KERNERSVILLE - Mrs. Blanche H. Cox, 88, of 912 Piney Grove Road and formerly of York, S.C., died Saturday, May 26, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Cox was the daughter of the late Hilary and Lura Herrin. She was a homemaker and loving wife. She was especially fond of flowers. She was preceded in death by her husband John. H. Cox, and a daughter, Willie Eubanks. She is survived by a daughter, Ruth B. White and husband Raymond of Rock Hill, S.C.; three stepsons, Keith Cox of Georgia, Eddie Cox of Florida, and Jeff Cox of South Carolina; two sisters, Gladys Mintz of McConnells, S.C., and Lucille H. Laney of Rock Hill, S.C.; a brother, Mimz Herrin of Salisbury; a grandson and three stepgrandchildren. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at Hanes-Lineberry, Pierce Chapel. Funeral services are private. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 1386-A Westgate Center Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

DOWELL

YADKINVILLE - Mrs. Ruby Bernice Underwood Dowell, 82, of FoxFire Lane passed away Saturday, May 26, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was born Aug. 24, 1918, in Forsyth County to the late Mack and Mam Scott Underwood. Mrs. Dowell was retired from Fogle Brothers Furniture Co. with 29 years of service, and was a member of Gospel Way Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters. She is survived by her husband, Fred E. Dowell of the home; three stepchildren, Patsy (Thomas) Sale of Winston-Salem, Fredrick (Lib) Dowell of Jacksonville, and Joan (Bill) Norman of Hennessey, Okla.; a son, Richard (Leah) Underwood of Kernersville; a nephew, Tony Underwood of Pinnacle; five stepgrandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren. Her funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Gentry Family Chapel by Rev. Junior Royall. Burial will follow in Yadkin Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Gentry Family Funeral Service on Highway 601 N. in Yadkinville.

GALLIMORE

Mr. William Arthur Gallimore, 92, died Saturday morning May 26, 2001, at Meadowbrook Terrace of Winston-Salem. He was born in Carroll County, Va., on Jan. 27, 1909, to William and Surilda Patience Moore Gallimore. Mr. Gallimore served in the U.S. Army in the Asiatic Pacific Theater during World War II as a military policeman. He was a charter member of Cornerstone Baptist Church and had retired from the Veterans Administration. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Hattie Holcomb Gallimore of the home; three nieces, Norma Lee Carr of Virginia, Sue Gallimore Trescott of Pennsylvania, and Peggy Holcomb Hine and husband Sam of Winston-Salem; and two nephews, Gray Gallimore of New Jersey, and Carlos Ervin and wife Irene of Winston-Salem. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Revs. Charles Martin and Richard Everhart officiating. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. GORDON

HAMPTONVILLE - Mr. Jerry Lee Gordon, 60, of Mountain View Church Road passed away Sunday, May 27, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. He was born Jan. 27, 1941, in Forsyth County to the late James Monroe and Edith Linville Gordon. Mr. Gordon was the owner and operator of J.G. Garage and was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Brenda Addair Gordon of the home; seven children, Cindy Sullivan, Jerry Keith Gordon, Jamie Lee Gordon, Todd Gordon and wife Tanya Hixson Gordon, Mark Gordon, Sherri Gordon Boles and husband Jimmy Boles, and Brittany Gordon of the home; five grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and four sisters. His funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Mountain View Baptist Church with the Revs. Tim Tucker and Rick Tomlinson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. LEDFORD

HICKORY - Mr. Daniel Forrest "Dan" Ledford, 41, of Cook Lane died Saturday, May 26, 2001, at his residence following a sudden illness. Born Feb. 24, 1960, in Lincoln County, he was a son of the late Homer Lee and Mary Ruth Hullet Ledford. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Roger Ledford; a sister, Janice Ledford Hardin; and also by an infant brother. Mr. Ledford was a former resident of Sipes Orchard Home in Conover. He was a 1978 graduate of Newton-Conover High School and attended Lenior-Rhyne College. Mr. Ledford served 10 years in the U.S. Army, serving as paratrooper, and attaining the rank of staff sergeant. He resided in Winston-Salem from 1979 to 1984 before relocating to the Catawba County area. He was formerly employed by Sarstedt Inc. At the time of his death, Mr. Ledford was a real-estate broker with Century 21 LA Properties in Hickory. He was a former member of Mt. Zion Lutheran Church in Conover. He is survived by his wife, Susan Taylor Ledford of Newton; a daughter, Samantha Brooke Ledford, and a son, Daniel Forrest Ledford II, both of Newton; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Michael and Dawn Ledford of Newton, and Timothy Ledford of Vale; four sisters, Vickie Munday and Judy Sipe, both of Maiden, Pam Daniel of Gastonia, and Gail Ledford of Vale; and two nephews, Janson and Brandon Ledford. The funeral service for Mr. Ledford will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 29, from the graveside at Mt. Zion Lutheran Church cemetery with Dr. Mark R. Sills officiating. military rites will be conducted by Newton American Legion Post 16. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home in Newton. Pallbearers will be Michael Ledford, Timothy Ledford, John Taylor, Frank Taylor, Shane Presley, Chris Tally and Ronnie Daniel. The family requests that memorials be given to Sipes Orchard Home, 4431 County Home Road, Conover, NC 28613. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home of Newton.

MALLARD

Mrs. Evelyn Daniel Mallard, 89, died May 27, 2001, at Claire Bridge in Winston-Salem. She was born May 17, 1912, in Bellville, Ga., to Cleburn Laing Daniel and Carrie Wood Daniel. Mrs. Mallard spent most of her life in Georgia. She and her husband, the late William Ralph Mallard, lived for many years in Dublin, Ga. While living in Dublin, she was an active member of the First United Methodist Church and was a secretary for the Laurens County Farm Bureau. Mrs. Mallard and her husband retired in Bellville, Ga., in 1974. She was a member of the Bellville United Methodist Church and had also been a member of the Claxton Garden Club and the Daughters of the American Revolution. After Mr. Mallard's death in 1993, Mrs. Mallard moved to Magnolia Manor in Richmond Hill, Ga., and later to Winston-Salem to be close to her daughter. She is survived by her two daughters, Anne Mallard Mumy and husband Don of Clemmons, and Sue Mallard Roth and husband Tom of Sugarland, Texas; two sisters, Jane Padgett (HC) of Baxley, Ga. and Carolyn Head of Dublin, Ga.; four grandchildren, William Cotham of Columbia, S.C., Caroline Cotham Huffines (Alan) of Waco, Texas, Jennifer Roth of Charlotte, and Elizabeth Roth Webb (Michael) of Chapel Hill; and four great-grandchildren, Morgan, Madison and Melissa Huffines and Mac Webb. The family will receive friends starting at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 29, at Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home in Claxton, Ga. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 30, at the Bellville United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Brewton cemetery in Hagan, Ga. Memorials may be made to your local Alzheimer's Association or to the Bellville United Methodist Church; P.O. McMILLIAN

Mrs. Mable Vanlandingham McMillian, 82, of 775 Carl Russell Ave., Apt. A, passed away on Thursday, May 24, 2001, at the Wake Forest University/Baptist Medical Center after an extended illness. She was born on March 10, 1919, to the late Eddie and Rosanna Vanlandingham. She attended the local schools and was a former employee of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. She was a faithful member of Second Calvary Missionary Baptist Church where she served on the Usher Board before her health declined. She leaves to cherish her memory a devoted niece, Mary (Elmer Charles) Robinson; a second niece, Patricia Rhodes Landingham; two devoted great-nieces, Joanne (Jasper) Martin, and Sandra Robinson, all of Winston-Salem; a devoted sister-in-law, Lillie Vanlandingham of Washington, D.C.; two loving friends, Nora Love and Shirley Scott; eight great-nephews; and a host of other great-great nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 29, from the Second Calvary Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor Donald S. Stowe Sr. officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen cemetery. The family visitation will be from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the church. (Russell)
