YOUNG

LEXINGTON - Mr. J. Smith Young, 83, of 603 Weaver Drive died May 25, 2001, at Arbor Acres United Methodist Retirement Community in Winston-Salem. Mr. Young was born Aug. 27, 1917, in Davidson County to Baxter Clay and Emma Lee Smith Young. Smith Young's career began more than 50 years ago when, as a teen-ager, he worked summers at Dixie Furniture Co., which had been founded by his uncle, Henry T. Link. After playing both football and basketball in high school, Mr. Young attended Wake Forest University, helping it to win the Southern Conference Basketball Championship in 1939. On his way to his Bachelor of Science in economics, Mr. Young was the editor of his yearbook and the president of both his sophomore and senior classes. His furniture career was then interrupted by a four-year tour of duty in the U.S. Navy. After training at Harvard University, Mr. Young's service on board a destroyer included the invasion of North Africa, Sicily, Normandy, Southern France and Okinawa, after which he returned to Lexington and employment at Dixie. In 1950, Mr. Young became the vice president of sales, and in the following years, helped establish Link-Taylor Corp., Young-Hinkle Corp., and Henry Link Corp., all separate but related companies. Over the years, Mr. Young became both chairman and president of Dixie and Henry Link, as well as executive vice president of Link-Taylor and Young-Hinkle. J. Smith Young has always been a community leader as a life trustee at Wake Forest, president of both the Wake Forest Deacon Club and the Alumni Association, chairman of the board of trustees at Lexington Memorial Hospital, president of the Lexington Kiwanis Club, a member of the school board, a director of Lexington State Bank, and chairman of the Lexington chapter of the American Red Cross. He has also been active in his church, the First Presbyterian Church of Lexington. He also took a position of leadership in the furniture industry as a chairman of the Southern Furniture Manufacturers Association, receiving the prestigious James T. Ryan Award in 1983 for his many contributions to the residential furniture industry. In addition, Mr. Young has headed the Furniture Factories Marketing Association of the South, and the board of governors of both the Dallas Market Center and the Atlanta Merchandise Mart. In 1991, Mr. Young was honored with the Anti-Defamation League's Man of Achievement Award in New York. In October 1993, Mr. Young was inducted into the American Furniture Hall of Fame. In recent weeks, Smith Young was again honored by being named chairman of Lexington Furniture Industries. In October 1994, the then-expanded and renovated Lexington area YMCA became the J. Smith Young YMCA. Young has had an impact on the residential furniture industry like few others through creative merchandising concepts, close working relationships with leading retailers, and new manufacturing techniques. Dixie's Series #40 contemporary group is still remembered, as "Teenette," the industry's pioneer white painted French girl's bedroom and "Ship's Ahoy," an early nautically themed boys' group. "Wicker by Henry Link" created an entirely new direction for the company, and allowed its first entry into upholstery. It is this strength in distribution, merchandising and management that attracted Masco Corp., which acquired what is now known as Lexington Furniture Industries in 1987. Since then, Lexington has continued to create new industry standards with the ultra-successful "Bob Timberlake Collection," "Lynn Hollyn at Home," "Weekend Retreat," "Old Salem," and "American Country West," among others. Still, Mr. Young is most proud of his family, including his lovely wife, Helen Finley Wright Young; his daughter, Sydney Beck and her husband Johnnie of Lexington; his two sons, Jeff and his wife Lynn of Winston-Salem, and Jay and his wife Kathy of Lexington; and all of his nine grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Dennis Sebesan and the Rev. Steve Lindsley officiating. Burial will follow at Lexington City cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Piedmont Funeral Home, and at other times at the residence. Memorials may be directed to the Lexington Memorial Hospital, P.O. Box 1817, Lexington, NC 27293-1817; the First Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 586, Lexington, NC 27293; or to the J. Smith Young YMCA, P.O. Box 210, Lexington, NC 27293.
