BLAKELEY

Mr. Floyd Irvan Blakeley, 83, of 2521 W. Polo Road, Winston-Salem died Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Blakeley was born May 17, 1918, in Yadkin County to John Henry and Ethel Douglas Blakeley. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Vernon and Walter Blakeley; and a sister, Lillian Graves. His wife, Grace Blakeley, of Springwood Care; two daughters, Janet Hogan and Patsy Knapp of Winston-Salem; a son, Burnette Blakeley of Cary; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren survive him. In addition, three sisters, Adeline Sapp, Gladys Hawks and Nell Arrington and a brother, Kenneth Blakeley survive him. He was a former employee of Biltmore Dairies and Yarbrough Transfer Co. He was an active member of Matthews Chapel Church of Christ and a longtime volunteer with the Cancer Services' "Pink Broomstick" program. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 31, 2001, at Matthews Chapel Church of Christ with the Rev. Ron Exline officiating. The body will lie in state 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory in Walkertown. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, May 30, at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel. Memorials may be made to Cancer Services Inc., 3175 Maplewood Ave., Winston-Salem, NC 27103 or to Matthews Chapel Church of Christ, 284 Oak Summit Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27105.

DAVIS

Mr. Percy Hiawatha Davis, 84, of 542 Edna St. passed away Friday, May 25, 2001, at his residence following a period of illness. He was born April 24, 1917, in Winston-Salem to the late Meredith Stokes Davis and the late Bertie Lou Moore Davis. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. in 1979. He was a deacon in the Holiness body for many years before joining the New Jerusalem Baptist Church where he was a faithful member. Mr. Davis was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Pauling Davis. He is survived by two daughters, Patricia Wilkes Shepard and Karen Davis Scales both of Winston-Salem; two stepsons, Clarence Weaks of Winston-Salem and Robert Ross of Los Unas, N.M.; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mabel Evans of Winston-Salem; a brother, James Davis of Winston-Salem; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, May 31, 2001, at the New Jerusalem Baptist Church with the Rev. Samuel J. Cornelius officiating. Interment will be in the Evergreen cemetery. The family visitation will be from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Thursday at the church. The family will assemble and leave from the Russell Funeral Home for the funeral services on Thursday. (Russell)

DINKINS

YADKINVILLE - Mr. James Ray Dinkins of Richmond, Va,. and Yadkinville passed away Monday, May 28, 2001, at his home in Richmond, Va. He was born March 5, 1928, in Yadkin County to Robert and Minnie Mathis Dinkins. Mr. Dinkins was a retired staff representative for the Communications Workers of America. He was a past president of Local 3060 in Winston-Salem; the Retirees Club of Rosa; the CWA Retirees Club; and was a member of Deep Creek Baptist Church in Yadkinville. Surviving are his wife, Mary Cranford Dinkins of the home; three children, Gary Dean Dinkins of Richmond, Va., Cheryl Dinkins Spain and husband Marion of Mount Jackson, Va., and Michael Ray Dinkins and wife Pat of Clemmons; his mother, Minnie Mathis Dinkins; four grand-children, Christopher Dinkins, Mary Beth Dinkins, Jessie Spain Fisher and husband Jason and Sean Spain; a sister, Treva Brown; and a brother, Nelson Dinkins. His funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thurs-day at Deep Creek Baptist Church by Dr. Ron Davis. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Gentry Family Funeral Service, Highway 601 N., Yadkinville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

FULTON

Mr. Richard Shore Fulton, 84, died Monday, May 28, 2001, at Meadowbrook Terrace of Winston-Salem. He was born May 5, 1917, in Winston-Salem, the son of John Gideon Fulton and Callie Shore Fulton. He attended R.J. Reynolds High School and worked at Wachovia Bank for five years before joining the Armed Forces. He was stationed in California and Omaha, Neb., before being sent to England, where he spent the next two years. Mr. Fulton was then sent to Paris to work for the U.S. State Department. He was awarded a lifetime appointment and worked at the Embassy for eight years and was then transferred to Athens, Greece. He was there for two years when he resigned and returned to the United States. He obtained a job as an accountant for Western Electric, where he worked for 22 years, retiring in 1976. He was married to Mabel Knight on Dec. 5, 1964. He is survived by his wife of 36 years; a brother, the Rev. John W. Fulton Sr. of Winston-Salem; two half brothers, Lee Fulton and Joel Fulton of South Carolina; and a number of nieces and nephews. There will be a memorial service for Mr. Fulton at Bethesda Moravian Church on Bethesda Road at 4 p.m. Sunday, June 3. Mrs. Fulton thanks the staff of Meadowbrook Terrace of Winston-Salem for the loving care he received at the home. They are the best!

HIPPLE

Edna Trulove Hipple, 100, died yesterday, May 29, at The Oaks of Forsyth. Born in Shoals to Robert Evan and Ella Marion Trulove May 18, 1901, she attended Davenport School in Lenoir and Elon College with studies in business and music. Married in 1926 to Leslie C. Hipple, she spent the remainder of her life in Winston-Salem. She was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church and a frequent pianist for the Maude Williamson Sunday school class for many years. She was predeceased by her husband in 1975 and is survived by a daughter, Mary Jo Hipple; a local nephew, John R. Trulove; and other nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 30, 2001, by the Rev. Jack Yarbrough. Any donations or memorials may be made to Centenary United Methodist Church.

JENKINS

Mrs. Bonnie Belle Smitherman Jenkins, 69, of Winston-Salem, died Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Aug. 29, 1931, to Foy Everett and Rose Scharfel Smitherman in Grundy County, Iowa Mrs. Jenkins was a member of Advent Moravian Church and was a graduate of Boonville High School. Preceding her in death is a brother, Robert Smitherman. Surviving are her husband, Bill Grey Jenkins of the home; a daughter, Roberta Jo "Bobbie" Jenkins; two sons, Randall Grey Jenkins and Billy Wayne Jenkins all of Winston-Salem; two brothers, Bill Smitherman and wife Sharon of Mount Jackson, Va. and Bud Smitherman and wife Nita of Winston-Salem. The family would like to thank the staff friends at Piedmont Dialysis Center. A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, May 31, 2001, at Advent Moravian Church by the Rev. Tripp May and the Rev. H.O. Jenkins. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Memorials may be made to the Advent Moravian Church Building Fund, 1514 W. Clemmonsville Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27127. Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

JOHNSON

NORTH WILKESBORO - Mrs. Virginia McNeil Bullis Johnson, 85, of E St., widow of William Oliver Johnson, died Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at her home. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 31, at Mountain Park cemetery, with Dr. N. Nelson Granade Jr. and the Rev. Frank McKenzie officiating. Mrs. Johnson was born in Wilkes County on July 15, 1915, to William Alexander and Helen Compton Bullis. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of North Wilkesboro. Mrs. Johnson was retired from the Wilkes County Department of Social Services. Mrs. Johnson is survived by a daughter, Ann Fortuna of North Wilkesboro; a son, William Gerald Johnson of Oak Ridge, Tenn.; a sister, Edna Bledsoe of Elkton, Md.; and four grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Wilkes, P.O. Box 609, North Wilkesboro, NC 28659 or to Hunger Coalition, 417 Meadowview Drive, Boone, NC 28607. Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in North Wilkesboro will be in charge of arrangements.

RORIE

Mr. Jahue Rorie, 70, of 2228 Flag St. passed away Thursday, May 24, 2001, at N.C. Baptist Hospital. He was born April 16, 1931, in Anson County to Gladys A. Wilson and the late Jack Rorie. He leaves to cherish his memories two daughters, Marjorie Jean Young and Miriam Young; his mother, Gladys A. Wilson; two brothers, Thedford Rorie of Newton Grove and Nathaniel (Ernestine) Rorie; three grandchildren, Kesha Young, Nathan Young and Shawnetta Young; a devoted friend, Mattie Cochran; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, May 31, 2001, at Beasley's Chapel, with the Rev. Sam Hickerson officiating. Family visitation will be at 2 p.m. at the chapel. Beasley's Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

STANLEY

Mrs. Gloria Jean Stanley, 50, of Winston-Salem died Monday, May 28, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Jan. 12, 1951, in Forsyth County to Thomas Nelson Duggins Sr. and Lydia Walker Duggins. Mrs. Stanley was a 1968 graduate of Parkland High School and served with the U.S. Air Force. She had worked at Red Lobster in Winston-Salem for 14 years where she obtained the status of Double Eagle and was a certified trainer. She had a wide variety of interests and was a committed member of her community. She was loved by everyone and had the wisdom to find something good in every day and in every one. She was preceded in death by her father, Thomas Nelson Duggins Sr., and her two brothers, Thomas Nelson Duggins Jr. and Dennis Ray Duggins. Survivors include a son, David Lee Stanley Jr. and wife Susan of Rural Hall; her mother of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Nellie Mae Copley of Winston-Salem and Peggy Ann Bradley of Germanton; three brothers, Harvey Dale Duggins of Winston-Salem, Randall Keith Duggins and wife Sandra of Greensboro, and Timothy Joel Duggins and wife Fran of Germanton; and several nieces, nephews and cousins who will miss her dearly. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel by the Rev. David Wooten. Burial will follow in Woodland cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

TEAGUE

Mr. John Wesley "J.W." Teague Jr. was called home to be with his Lord on Tuesday, May 29, 2001. He was born in Winston-Salem on April 20, 1929, to John and Dora Teague. He taught woodworking and was head over maintenance at the Red Shield Boy's Club, retired from McLean Trucking and was owner and operator of Jones Upholstery. He was of the Moravian faith. Mr. Teague leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Edna Teague of the home; three daughters, Gail Shaw of Lewisville, Carolyn (Don) Griffin of Winston-Salem and Robin (Guy) Powell of Winston-Salem; two sons, Tim (Laurie) Teague of Advance and Richard (Wilma) Teague of Clemmons; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Glen (Viola) Teague of Panama City, Fla.; three sisters, Esther (Howard) Atkins of Winston-Salem, Maelene Snyder of Mocksville and Ann Canter of Clemmons; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Teague touched the lives of all who knew him with his caring spirit. A special thank you to Hospice & Palliative CareCenter of Winston-Salem and the angels from 11 North Tower. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 31, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. Donald W. Griffin officiating. Burial will follow at Parklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

THORP

DOBSON - Mrs. Tara Jean Hemmings Thorp, 42, died Tuesday morning May 29, 2001, at her home after an extended illness. Jean was born Oct. 9, 1958, to David W. Hemmings and Peggy Halsey Hemmings. She was a schoolteacher at Central Middle School in Dobson and was a member of Dobson First Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband, Bill Thorp of the home; her daughter, Katy Nicole Thorp; and her son, William David Thorp both of the home; her mother, Peggy H. Hemmings of Dublin, Va.; her father, David W. Hemmings of Dobson; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Amy and Lonnie Bledsoe Jr. of Mount Airy and Beth and John Donnelly Jr. of Dublin, Va.; a sister-in-law, Deborah McMahon of Mertzon, Texas; a very special aunt, Mrs. Ruth Freeman of Dobson; and her nieces and nephews, Lindsey and Wes Bledsoe, Mattie and Grayson Donnelly and Emily McMahon. Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, May 31, 2001, at the Dobson First Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2:45 p.m. before the services Thursday at the church. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Dobson First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 278, Dobson, NC 27017 or to a trust fund for Katie and Will, c/o Community Bank, 201 W. Kapp St., Dobson, NC 27017.

WEST

Mr. John Early West, 65, of East Bend passed away Monday, May 28, 2001, at Duke Medical Center. He was born June 14, 1935, in Forsyth County to Beulah Stimpson and John Thomas West. Mr. West was a member of Jonestown Baptist Church and retired from the North Carolina Department of Transportation after 32 years of service. Surviving are Mr. and Mrs. William O. Smith of Atlanta, Ga.; Mr. and Mrs. Bob Johnson of East Bend; Mr. Charlie Stimpson of Lewisville and Sarah West Heist of Winston-Salem. A graveside service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, May 31, 2001, at Forsyth Memorial Park with the Rev. Bill Teague officiating. There is no stated visitation. Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

WILLIARD

FARMINGTON - Mrs. Elizabeth Graham Williard, 94, died at Salemtowne, where she lived for the past 13 years. She was born May 16, 1907, to Galenus and Jettie James Graham in Farmington, which remained her home for 81 years. She is survived by a son, John Graham Williard and wife Patricia Grant Williard of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, Grant Williard and Lois Elizabeth Fields; and six great-grandchildren, all of Raleigh. From high school at Clemmons, junior college at Mars Hill and a year and summer school at Meredith College, she began teaching when she was only 19, which she continued for 47 years. She taught in King, Farmington, Smith Grove, South Stokes and Davie Senior High, where she completed her career. Having what was called a "blanket certificate," she taught many subjects including English, French and math and directed numerous high-school plays, a few that were musicals, as she played the piano. She received her master's degree along the way at Woman's College (UNCG). She was a lifelong member of Farmington Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school, played the old pedal organ and piano as well as leading the singing. She was a member of the Farmington chapter of the Eastern Star. Her hobbies were gardening, genealogy, teaching music and tutoring students for college. The family will be at Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel from 7 to 9 Wednesday evening. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 31, 2001, at Farmington Community cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Farmington Baptist Church, Farmington Road, Mocksville, NC 27028 or Salemtowne, 1000 Salemtowne Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27106.

WILSON

Mrs. Margie Edwards Wilson, 65, of Winston-Salem died Monday, May 28, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born April 15, 1936, in Forsyth County to William L. and Viola Mae Glascoe Edwards. Mrs. Wilson was a member of Union Grove Baptist Church. She was a kind and giving soul to everyone, and she never met a stranger. Surviving are a daughter, Rhonda Martiere and husband Paul of Winston-Salem; three sons, Richard Wilson and wife Lisa of Winston-Salem, Donald Wilhelm Jr. and wife Jackie of Lexington and Joey Wilhelm and wife Tina of Winston-Salem; 14 grandchildren, Anthony Thorn-burg, Brian Hughes, Crystal Wilhelm, Shannon Barbre, Krista Wilhelm, Laura Wilhelm, Heather Wilhelm, Ashley Wilhelm, Charity Wilhelm, Joey Ray Wilhelm Jr., Shelaine Whitlock, Tyler Priddy, Nichole Wilson and Steadman Wilson; a brother; and six sisters. Funeral services will be 7 p.m. Wednes-day at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel, with the Rev. Marty Reeves officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home after the service.

BROWN

Mr. Reuben Brown Jr., 45, of 3415 Lubet Lane, passed away on Thursday, May 31, 2001, at the Forsyth Medical Center following a period of illness. He was a native and lifelong resident of Forsyth County, a graduate of North Forsyth High School, a veteran of the U.S. Army, and was of the Baptist faith. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving and very devoted wife Anne Brown; his daughter, Sharon Sheff; his mother and stepfather, Geneva and H.L. James; his mother-in-law Jessie Amaker; three stepdaughters, Andrea (William) Dodd, Alesa Hairston, and Teleah (Gary) Moe; one stepson, Andrew (Angie) Hairston; a devoted sister, Patricia (Cassanova) Hickman; a loving sister, Cynthia (Rusty) Payne; two nephews, Anthony Brown and Jordon Payne; four loving aunts and uncles, Essie (Lee) Sturdivant, Louise (Willie) Davidson Sr., Mary (Phillip) Clement, and Delores (Harvey) Smallwood; two sisters-in-law, Betty Amaker and Lois (James) Powell; a brother-in-law, Larry (Connie) Amaker; nine grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, June 5, at the Chapel of the Russell Funeral Home with Minister James Rowdy Jr. officiating. Interment will be in the Evergreen cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday, June 4, at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel. (Russell)

CARTER

HIGH POINT - Mr. Todd Owen Carter, 34, died Saturday, June 2, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He was born in Smithfield on June 28, 1966, a son of Lee Chandler Carter and Peggy Kennedy Carter. He was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and had received his master's degree in music from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He currently was in the Doctor of Musical Arts Program in conducting at UNCG. He was a former resident of Greensboro and had lived in High Point for the past six years. He was a member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the Chancel Choir and a featured soloist. He was currently employed as an instructor of music at High Point University. He had formerly taught choral music at Trinity High School and had served as music director at Memorial United Methodist Church in Thomasville. He was a former member of Bel Canto in Greensboro and was a member of the University of North Carolina Clefhangers. He was a former member of the Winston-Salem Symphony Chorale and the UNCG Chorale, and was a paid soloist at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Greensboro. On Aug. 7, 1994, he was married to Miss Catherine Tucker, who survives of the home. Also surviving is his father, Lee Chandler Carter of Four Oaks; two sisters, Mrs. John (Cathy) Weaver and Miss Linda Carter, both of High Point; a brother, Chandler Carter and his wife Jane Huber of New York City; his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Louise Carter of Garland; and two nephews, Drew Weaver and Owen Carter. Memorial services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church by Dr. Garland Young and the Rev. David Melton. A private family Service of Committal will be in the church columbarium. The family will receive friends in the Asbury Room of the church following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Todd Owen Carter Music Fund in the UNCG Excellence Foundation, c/o UNCG, P.O. Box 26170, Greensboro, NC 27402-6170. J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home in Thomasville is in charge of arrangements.
